    So menthol drops don't actually accelerate the healing process, but instead simply make you feel less sick?

    • @Deadite9405
      @Deadite9405 Před 3 lety +126

      Yes. That's all pretty much *every* treatment for a cold or flu does. For most viral infections, all you typically can or should do is suppress the symptoms and take care of yourself so your immune system can fight the infection. If you have a bacterial infection like strep throat, you should see your doctor to determine if antibiotics would be an appropriate treatment.

    Many brands, including Halls, also have "extreme" or "intense" cough drops with 12-15mg of menthol. These are so strong that they can also help with your respiratory system and sinuses when you breathe. They taste absolutely horrible and can be painful on your tongue and actually "burn" it you use too many of them, but the first time I took one when working a physical job while recovering from the flu, I actually felt normal for those 15 or so minutes. Throat, lungs, sinuses, and all. I don't recommend using them while you're in bed resting unless you've got something severe like strep throat, but if you have to get up and be active while sick (e.g. to visit a doctor or pick up medicine or food), they can take the edge off. On the other hand, I once tried sucking on one while healthy, and almost threw up.

    Opioids like heroin or oxycodone cause their primary effects by binding to mu opioid receptors (MOR or μ-opioid receptor) not Kappa Opioid Receptors (KOR or κ-opioid receptor) (There are three types of opioid receptors mu (μ), Delta (δ) and Kappa (κ). Each of these three receptors have different functions.) Kappa opioid receptors when agonized do not cause the same effects as regular opiates. Agonists of KOR's actually cause dysphoria instead of euphoria (Look up Salvia / Salvinorin A if you want to know more about the effects of taking a kappa opioid receptor against). While it is true morphine and some other opioids binds to kappa opioid receptors their main analgesic effect comes from agonism of μ opioid receptors.

      The evidence for Vitamin C effectively bolstering the immune system is relatively weak. Some studies show that it may help slightly to take a supplementation while you're sick, while others show no impact. It certainly doesn't hurt to make sure you aren't deficient in it, but it doesn't have any special immune properties.

On the other hand, continuously using menthol drops can eventually cause them to irritate your tongue and throat, so even that might not happen.
