when I was younger I used to eat cough drops then drink water for that cold effect 😂
Nice, now you got that icy river
Same
I think the most blessing feeling u can ever get in the world is be thirsty, and then drink water like this at 4 AM on your bed
@@bruh-bn3ni exactly. Wake up out of a good slumber and just down a bottle of water **bliss** ✨
So menthol drops don't actually accelerate the healing process, but instead simply make you feel less sick?
Yes. That's all pretty much *every* treatment for a cold or flu does. For most viral infections, all you typically can or should do is suppress the symptoms and take care of yourself so your immune system can fight the infection. If you have a bacterial infection like strep throat, you should see your doctor to determine if antibiotics would be an appropriate treatment.
That's like saying Percocet helped heal my bone.
Wait, who actually thought cough drops did anything other than provide temporary relief of throat irritation and cough...?
Yeah basically a placebo effect. Oral antiseptic or mouth wash will do.

Many brands, including Halls, also have "extreme" or "intense" cough drops with 12-15mg of menthol. These are so strong that they can also help with your respiratory system and sinuses when you breathe. They taste absolutely horrible and can be painful on your tongue and actually "burn" it you use too many of them, but the first time I took one when working a physical job while recovering from the flu, I actually felt normal for those 15 or so minutes. Throat, lungs, sinuses, and all. I don't recommend using them while you're in bed resting unless you've got something severe like strep throat, but if you have to get up and be active while sick (e.g. to visit a doctor or pick up medicine or food), they can take the edge off. On the other hand, I once tried sucking on one while healthy, and almost threw up.
Fishermans friends
Vics has 20 mg too
Thanks for the info, I always assumed the "extreme" was just for a minty-er flavour or pure advertisement. I'll pick some up when I next get super stuffy (allergies)
Also, Vicks have really good cough drops just for this issue
Taste bad witch type of hall were you eating
"This is why cough drops and heroine are kinda the same"
It's like I'm right back in my Drugs and Behavior class at university.
🤣🤣🤣
I've always loved this kinda of content where it's so explicit. You explain every molecule and reaction. Really nice job man! Keep up with the good work!
I was searching a while for an actual explanation instead of all those "health" sites that just tell you that menthol makes you feel better. Quality content
*Halls Relief:* Used for when you want cold relief but you don’t care about the harsh yucky menthol taste.
*Halls Soothe:* Used for when you want cold relief but you don’t want that harsh that harsh yucky menthol taste.
*Halls Breezers:* Used for when your throat feels a little scratchy, even when you’re not sick, especially for allergies.
*Halls Defense:* Used for boosting your immune system.
Halls relief taste good
Good
Halls Defense is also a scurvy remedy, so chuck them at your local pirates.
Man I’ve been on the tail end of the flu (not Covid thankfully)this week and yesterday I had to move into a new apartment and they were a lifesaver. And here I am learning how they made life better my first morning in my new apartment.
ive been sick with covid for 3 days now, and wow the menthol in the cough drops really work wonders for my throat and my slight stuffy nose. and the taste isnt too bad
Are you better now?
I used to eat cherry halls like they were candy back when I was younger. I used eat a bunch in one setting. Sure the taste was not very candy-like but I did enjoy that minty breeze after taste. Glad this did not entirely mess me up.
Ludens is where it's at. No menthol, just pectin. It's literally just cherry candy. I used to eat them all the time.
Same
Menthol: The same cool, soothing ingredient in the cigarettes recommended by my doctor.
Lol
Next video idea: How Psychedelics are on the leading frontier of treating mental health ( like MDMA for PTSD, LSD for addiction, Psilocybin for anxiety, Ketamine for depression etc. )
When I was a kid I used to think that "throat lozenges" were cough drops that you were somehow supposed to hold in your throat instead of your mouth. I didn't understand how people could use them without choking to death.
The videos on this channel are amazing. Couldn't wait for an update. good vid keep it up!
Thanks alot! :D
@@darkscienceyt Thank you
"Heroin is a strong agonist"
Yh no shit 😂😂😂 I love this guy
Menthol, huh? Finally, a scientific video proving why Vicks is overpowered in the hispanic community!
Thanks for the video :)
No problem,. Thanks for sticking around
Opioids like heroin or oxycodone cause their primary effects by binding to mu opioid receptors (MOR or μ-opioid receptor) not Kappa Opioid Receptors (KOR or κ-opioid receptor) (There are three types of opioid receptors mu (μ), Delta (δ) and Kappa (κ). Each of these three receptors have different functions.) Kappa opioid receptors when agonized do not cause the same effects as regular opiates. Agonists of KOR's actually cause dysphoria instead of euphoria (Look up Salvia / Salvinorin A if you want to know more about the effects of taking a kappa opioid receptor against). While it is true morphine and some other opioids binds to kappa opioid receptors their main analgesic effect comes from agonism of μ opioid receptors.
Next we need to discuss weather or not cough drops can be addictive.
Not as bad as certain cough syrups. But less so, now that codeine has gone Rx only, at least here in the US...
@@gyrgrls Nice to know, thanks.
I saw this last night while working and I wanted to watch it so bad so here I am today and happy Father’s Day guys
So basically I should be shoving the relief, defense and breezers in my mouth all at once? Gotcha!
1:58 a question I ask all the time
Now I know why my pain creams work. This was interesting.
Thank you this is exactly what I was looking for
Glad I could help
Tip if you hate cough drops: Just suck on some hard peppermint candy. Heck, even non mint lollipops and such can be soothing.
Helps stop the irritation in my throat 👍🏾 🍃 🍒 🌿
Cool video about cough drops
Good video thanks
Not me sucking on a cough drop right now because I have a cold
Thanks for the information sir.
Always welcome
Thanks so much! I love Luden's or Ricolas
Always wondered this
Imagine a drug dealer explaining the effects of heroin in this same way during dealings.
people really need to emphasize how strong opiates are, they always just say you experience euphoria and increased happiness but they don't say by how much, very few of them say heroin releases more dopamine and serotonin than should ever be acheived naturally.
Ive always wondered this
Got a cold just a week ago and I was wondering the same thing!
genuinely love the taste of cough drops, no joke.
I’ve gotten the same effect from sucking on hard candy and drinking warm liquids in between 🥰
Love the video
Thanks
Pause...
I don't use cough drops for my throat I use them for my stomach when it feels bad and it's help but my stomach feels bad a lot because I have bad anxiety so idk y it helps it but it does
Yes
This how to lock the day I was really sick of my throat look like really really really sick so thank you so much🎉
Vitamon C does *NOT* help with cold or cold symptoms.
Perfect video
Thanks
What about the benzocaine in some stronger cough drops? I'm guessing it's the same effect but just a stronger agonist cause of the "-caine" part
soo to numb my sore throat i need heroine. thanks for the tip
But does vitamin C really stimulate immune system? Isn't it just another vitamin essential for our body, which has been hyped by L. Pauling so many people now think of vit. C as the panacea...
I was going to add a quick discussion on that in the video, but it ruined the flow, so I took it out. Will do a video on it in the future though
The evidence for Vitamin C effectively bolstering the immune system is relatively weak. Some studies show that it may help slightly to take a supplementation while you're sick, while others show no impact. It certainly doesn't hurt to make sure you aren't deficient in it, but it doesn't have any special immune properties.
Nice ending
I would take a cough drop when dehydrated finish it drink cold water with ice best refresher ever
I'm totally scoring some Heroin next time I get a sore throat. What could go wrong?
I love science
Uh I don't use cough drops for sore throat I use them for...coughing prevention. Am I using them wrong or something?
They dont
So next time when I'm sick....Heroin Baby!
Help I think I'm addicted to cough drops
When I vape cannabis with a sore throat, my pain goes away. Seriously.
Poorly
So basically I can use heroin for my sore throat for optimum effect 🤔
science
can you make methanol a stronger agonist?
Menthol is a different molecule altogether from methanol. Methanol cough drops would be an irritant and would make a sore throat worse.
If you did something to make menthol a stronger agonist, it wouldn't be menthol anymore.
I hate cough drops i get sick alnost every 2 months so my mom gets me this alot
How’d they know that Mentol was Edible?
Soooo why don't they make cough drops with all that combined?? 🤔 Menthol, vitamin c and pectin??
I Iove cough drops…
Wow no wonder I like vicks so much 😱
The coincidence is when I watched this. I somehow also had a cold.
Here watching with covid, feeling like I'm hacking up my lungs!
I just ate 1 without knowing it's for a pain relief
TL;DW -heroine is a far superior cough suppressant.
So why can't i just use Heroin to cure my sore throat??
I learned there's cough drops with an equivalent to 600micro grams of fentanyl lmao
"the dark science of cough drops".
❤❤❤
Your lucky that cough drops help you. They never help me but I take them anyway. What am I doing wrong? It's probably because I can't tell the difference between sore and strep throat.
You need cough medicine. Cough drops dont do much by itself
I thought the video meant cough syrup lol
2:33 Can you see a Bob Marley?
Heroin cough drops
Before I watch the video I eat cough drops like candy
yey
I was Today years old when I found out the active ingredient in cough drops bind to the same receptors as heroin
Thankfully, it’s not as strong as heroin.
cough drops, more like, haha
Cough drops more like jolly ranchers
Waitttt what thanks to Lucifer morning???????
So using the logic that you researched cough drops because of having the terrible cold, would we have to wait for you to suffer and survive the plague before we get a video on the Black Death? Lol. Seriously though great and informative video
Thanks! I certainly hope not!
Got it. So I should use heroin to help cure the symptoms of my cough.
0:44 Atari Adventure
so what u r saying is...if i want to get high, i need a shit ton of peppermint...
But pineapple actually helps stop the coughing
Methol why its a medical I donk know all Europe sell them as kendy and US is like no its a cough drops
so should I smoke a pack of menthols 😅
Foist
Questions for science: Karma.
Interesting. Next time I catch a cold I'm gonna try and get some heroin.
Tveh drop your coughs, simple as
200th like
Uh
Can you get an addiction to them?
Their effect is topical, so it shouldn’t cause a chemical dependency. If you have a constant sore throat even when not sick, you might get psychologically addicted to the relief they bring. On the other hand, continuously using menthol drops can eventually cause them to irritate your tongue and throat, so even that might not happen.
You eat them... you feel better
vcool
7.5mg? Those bastards gave me 5.8mg 😒
let's all just take heroine then...
Based
0:49 why is it das cool? das is german and i wonder my german ass off
das boot
So i should take heroin when sick, gotcha
