This satirical comedic movie showed it's true mastery in the acting, dialogue, cinematography, and score of this scene. This joke of a movie becomes suddenly very moving

Of course, like all directors converting a book to a movie (with the exception of LotR), he discarded several things from the book. I just hadn't expected, when I first watched this movie in 1999, that he would discard the power armor and actual system of government used in the book.

True story. My friend (who's in the army now) was talking about this scene the whole drive home from the cinema. We were frequently letting off 'ya like that' the whole ride. So many great lines in this movie.
One of the best scenes of the movie. Made even better by the fact that they used actual rifles and blanks in production. So you actually get the shell casings flying out of the bolt instead of a gun flashing with nothing happening.

That's pretty much the point. What is this dude dying for? So the humans can capture a brain bug in a war that they initiated? How many bugs did they mow down during the course of the movie? The movie intentionally makes you sympathize with the human protagonists the same way most people sympathize with their own country's role in a war while it is happening, regardless of whether it is called for.

This movie is possibly the best example of how to NOT make a satirical movie. Verhoeven was trying to make some kind of statement about the dangers of fascism, the military etc - and he ends up making a movie that is clearly NOT fascist, but also shows off all the virtues of military service. This movie was the stepping stone that made me want to join the military by showing the camaraderie and bravery that goes with it. Watkins goes willingly, with his boots on. Get some, buddy! :D

god damn if this isn't one of the most bad ass scenes I've ever seen. Just everything, the dialog, the music, the heroic sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds. Absolute perfection, a master piece of a scene.
What this scene does is introduce a moment of humanity to what is otherwise a thinly veiled political diatribe. Its a reminder that whatever the politics there are real human beings, real heros, in every military. People who just want to do their duty and protect their family back home.

god damn if this isn't one of the most bad ass scenes I've ever seen. Just everything, the dialog, the music, the heroic sacrifice in the face of overwhelming odds. Absolute perfection, a master piece of a scene.

What this scene does is introduce a moment of humanity to what is otherwise a thinly veiled political diatribe. Its a reminder that whatever the politics there are real human beings, real heros, in every military. People who just want to do their duty and protect their family back home.

easily one of the most epic last stands, going down in a blaze of bad ass glory, this film doesn't get the recognition it deserves
