The Story of The 5’6 Goalkeeper That Was SO GOOD, He Forced FIFA To Change The Rules

  • In the world of football, you can shine by either scoring goals, dribbling brilliantly, making amazing passes, or excel by stopping other players at the defense or defending your goal as a goalkeeper. But would you believe me if I told you that a couple of decades ago, there was someone who wanted to shine in all those ways? A goalkeeper who was addicted to both stopping goals and scoring some incredible ones of his own. He didn't want to limit himself to just the goal area; he wanted to conquer the entire field.
He did what no other keeper before and wanted to completely redefine the position, at times starting the match as a keeper and switching halfway to play as a striker. And despite being only 5’6 or 168 cm making him one of the shortest goalkeepers in professional footballing history, he was just so good at both things that fifa literally had no choice but to change the rules of the game JUST because of him. So today, we’re gonna look at the incredibly unique and iconic career story of Jorge Campos.

He knew perfectly that his height was his bigges issue, he understood that the only way to keep himself there was to be outstanding in every game every play. His carisma and humble origins where just out of this World, amazing funny little great guy. By the way, he is still a humble guy up to this day.

Soy argentino y siempre admiré a Jorge Campos.

He was an idol for my dad and myself as a kid that I too played forward and goalkeeper for a short period of time. But coming from a family who’s from la Costa Chica, He was
someone who really gave a great recognition to Acapulco and Guerrero in general considering you rarely hear great players come from the state of Guerrero MX.
(with the expectation of Manuel Negrete who scored that famous scissor kick in the 86’ World Cup.)
Fun Fact : He has a restaurant in Acapulco named “El Brody’s” where he has 4 football fields to play on and memorabilia with pictures of him and legends of the game and the food is quite nice I must say.

Despite the general belief, Jorge Campos is 1.73m (5'8) tall. Still short for an average keeper, but very common for a mexican man. Look for pictures of him alonsgide Hugo Sánchez or Luis García Postigo (1.71) and you'll believe me.

There are some footages from this historical moment for us. My mother (thanks to her I am a football fan) still recalls him to this day as the parrot. Of course it's because of his kits.
