Is this $200 Camera (Canon M100) Good Enough to Grow Your YouTube Channel?

- I bought a Canon m100 to review as well as to compare vs my Sony zv-e1. I wanted to see if a value camera like this will be usable as a CZcams camera.
Will the long in the tooth 2017 aps-c camera get obliterated vs the full-frame low-light MONSTER that is the ZV-e1? Oh I sure hope so... because I paid a LOT more for it. Who would do such a thing you might ask? Me, that's who! Pitting a puny aps-c camera from 2017 WITH a kit lens vs a low-light beast with all the latest bells and whistles from 2023... Muahahaha!
In the next video I will compare them side-by-side in what will likely be a David-Vs-Goliath type showdown, but for now this is my first impressions with the Canon m100. Is it any good?

Thanks man! It'll be really fun to do some side by sides over the next day or so. I wish I had a better lens for it though. Stinking island! My sister-in-law just visited us and is a budding CZcamsr who's using her phone so I told her she could have it for what I paid for it. I even found a sigma 16 mm for her (on the mainland of course) which I told her to buy so... I know she'll appreciate it and I get to help her on her journey of getting better quality video.

In the right lighting that little camera was awesome! I didn't have it for very long since I didn't plan on keeping it and just wanted to have some fun with it... but it was great!

Not sure if you can put Magic Lantern in the M100, you can in the regular M, but with Magic Lantern you could get RAW output on the camera, and with the 16mm f/1.4 it could be a killer camera 😊
TIL about Magic Lantern! Wow, that's gnarly. Yeah you know I think I'm going to get the f1.4 and really test it out. This might be a banging little camera for new creators. I always paid extra for the 4k capabilities of the Sony aps-c stuff but that's a LOT more money and after having done this for awhile now, I don't think it's worth hit (for new creators).
An inexpensive manual 25mm f/1.8 lens will make it shine for talking head content, but it doesn't have clean HDMI--the m200 and m50mk2 added that.
That's an interesting idea. I've never shot manual for talking heads... Would you just use focus peaking while recording to be safe?
For the price it really does offer some value. I just picked up the Sigma 16mm f1.4 so I'll be running some tests with that next week. Should be fun and interesting!

@@thesahdstudio same here with Android. I'm a big Pixel fanboy. The Pixel 8 is literally releasing tomorrow. I just said iPhone because it's currently the hype.
@@TimBrownTown Oh dang! Are you getting it?! You know, I always thought Android would eventually the race but I think I was wrong! The numbers always seem there with Apple videos... I have even considered getting into Apple content just for the views buuut I never want to make my channel JUST about the views or rapid growth. I wanna focus on the fun and the passion and hopefully be able to make something out of that.
IF I ever switch to Apple it'd be because it increases the efficiency of my work flow. Plus it seems so expensive...
@@thesahdstudio I am considering it. I have a Pixel 6 pro and I love everything about it except for lowlight video. My son wants a new phone so I'm considering getting the 8 and giving him my Pixel 6. I don't enjoy Apple's IOS operating system nor their walled garden. I like the freedom Android gives you to use either better or less expensive alternatives from multiple vendors. Apple products might be slightly better in some ways (unfortunately video) and they have some accessories like AirTags that Android doesn't have a good alternative to but it doesn't justify double or more the cost overall. IOS has a significant advantage for people building apps. It's more simple than doing it on Android, and you can see this when vendors like BlackMagic will make the IOS app way sooner than they make the Android app.
@@TimBrownTown I agree with everything you are saying! My draw to the Apple ecosystem is for the computers (and air dropping files seems cool) as the M1/M2 chips look dynamite for editing... and getting that kind of editing speed on a laptop would be pretty cool. But I don't know if they make a laptop big enough for me. I like'em biiiggg. Plus if they did, it would no joke probably cost $5,000... it's just too much.
The chat apps etc.. seem nice too, although Whatsapp is fine. Out of curiosity what chat app do you use with your family?

I bought a used on Facebook Marketplace. Sometimes especially now that the camera is discontinued you might be able to find items like that for cheaper. I'm not sure I would buy it or recommend it at this point but it's still a good little camera with the right lens.
I would say the trick is to upload it as 4K to youtube and most won't notice much and think you're using a mist filter.
Exactly! This really seems like a little value beast. The only real downside I could see is the audio...

@@Bo_Hazem well this little camera doesn't have a mic input... the one real knock against it I would say. And I'd hate to have to tell newbies to record external audio...
I myself have the Deity D3 Pro as well as a Rode VideoMicro. Happy with both of those although the stinking Deity doesn't auto-turn off or on!! Grr

@@Bo_Hazem I have not but that's a good idea. I might have to check out the Sony stuff. Though for right now I like to boom my mic. It's been awhile since I've gone down the audio rabbit hole... I don't really want to record externally but it's not really that big of a deal. Maybe I'll see what kind of Black Friday deals come up (that usually makes the used market better too!).

There are other cameras like it... The Sony a5000 series are great too. Check out similar cameras by Googling it then see if you can find a good used one in your area!
This camera paired with the Sigma 16mm f1.4 can produce fantastic images.
Right? That's what I bought and even a video comparing it to my full-frame Sony on the channel!

Sorry I don't quite know what you are trying to say... I bought it on Facebook marketplace so depending on where you live, you might want to check that, or other websites that sell used stuff (eBay?).
M100 vs a6000 which one the best ?
Tough call... I haven't used the a6000 but I am a big fan of Sony and have owned multiple Sony a6400's. What is your goal with the camera, just pictures and occasional video? Will you get a lens or just buy with a kit lens?
I'm deciding between buying this used camera for $250 or the new zv e10 for $700, which one would you recommend for 1080p music videos? Also great video 🙏🏻
Thanks! Well if I were you I would see what lens options are available before deciding on the body. The lens you get will ultimately matter more for the look you want. I do think the e10 is a little more future proof with having the 4k option, and it will have better autofocus and video features for sure... but if you are just starting out and really want to keep the money tight, and know you will only ever shoot at 1080p, then the Canon isn't a bad option. Ok, having talked myself through my thoughts process, I think since Canon killed off the EF-M lenses and it's essentially a dead ecosystem, the Sony is a much safer bet. If/when you eventually upgrade, it will be much easier to sell the Sony camera/lenses for what you paid for them, so I say go Sony!
@@thesahdstudio if I get an EF to EF-M adapter and I only get EF lenses, that would be a nicer option for selling the lenses in the future?
@@felixfrankmusic But then you're still investing in a dead ecosystem with the adapter which will be much harder to sell in the future. For me personally, resell-ability is a big part of the equation. I think it depends on what kind of person you are... I think you will out grow the M100 much faster than the zv-e10. When/if you do outgrow it and want to trade up, it will be difficult to sell the Canon (I just went through this)... where it's very easy to sell the Sony. The more I think about it the harder it really is to recommend the Canon. Plus it doesn't have Mic input... so you would have to get an external audio source which you might have anyway, but still, it's always nice to plug in directly to the camera.
I only do stills and use the m100 as a compact camera for traveling. I like it a lot but found the low light capability disappointing, even when using the 22mm f2. How do high iso values of your full frame camera compare to the m100?
I can't really speak to photos but for video I mean the full-frame stuff is just insane... especially since I'm using the f1.4 G-Master, it's just wild what it's capable of seeing. With that being said, since I picked up the Sigma 16mm f1.4 it really adds a lot more to that small sensor and makes the colors and shadows look much better. It's quite a lot better than f2 but it's not exciting as a jump as going to full-frame.
The size is nice for sure, but if low light is something you really enjoy doing I mean in my opinion, it's rough to compare it to full-frame.

I use the 24mm (amzn.to/46fhkqM) because I usually sit in front of my camera. IF/when I do more vlogging I'll get the 20mm. I don't mind paying a little more for the all the Sony features (like focus breathing) as well as the same thread sizes.

I bought my M50 as my first camera, and I seriously regret investing in a mount that officially died a little bit after a year after I bought in. Nobody is making new glass for it. Even my M6 Mkii, which is my baby, is not a body I would recommend, and it's all because Canon abandoned it. I guess If somebody can find a M100 with a kit lens for CHEAP it might be worth investing in, but as a platform its not worth it IMO.
Well that's interesting and a bit unfortunate. So Canon ditched the ef-m for rf-m? There's probably an adapter but who wants to buy that kind of thing?
I'm trying to find cameras that would be big upgrades (for cheap-ish) for new creators and, well I see these m100s can be quite affordable.... I also found a Sigma 16mm for ef-m which I picked up for $360 CAD (about $260USD)... together with the body it cost me about $640 CAD ($465 USD). I am very curious how this will look. My old setup was the Sony a6400 with the Sigma 16mm, but that costs about $1400 CAD ($1020 USD). The only real difference is 4k and a mic input.. and I have a feeling this will be of similar quality once I upscale the footage to 4k.

@@thesahdstudio Unfortunately the itty bitty flange distance on the EF-m mount means that there isn't a single system that you can adapt the native glass to. To be honest, had I not found a SPECTACULAR deal on my M6 MkII, I was planning on selling both my M50 and all of my native glass to move to either Sony or Panasonic.
Now I'm happy enough with the M6 to keep it as my main camera until I can upgrade to full frame, when it will become a travel cam.
But had I known from the start that Papa Canon would leave for cigarettes and never come home I probably would have either gotten a DSLR, gone Micro 4/3 or saved more for a Sony APSC. But you know what they say about hindsight.
@@LunarGlowMedia You got a laugh out of me there at the end. And yeah, it's always annoying when you buy a camera and they release a new one or stop making lenses for it etc... it always seems to happen.
is there any heating while recording the videos?
I never noticed any heat but to be honest I never really pushed it for very long when I had it.
The video quality is fine, but the audio is absolute garbage. That Canon hiss drives me crazy!
I agree. I think this is an awesome little value camera otherwise but that's a pretty big problem (bad audio). I didn't play around in post with this but I should... Resolve has pretty robust audio editing, I wonder if it's easy to fix.

@Discoveredme yeah! Decent autofocus too. It's one of those, if you can snatch it for a great deal it's a decent to have kind of cameras. I wouldn't say go out of your way and get it though.... I'd rather have something with a few more options.like 4k and the ability to add external audio.

Nice! I did a couple videos on it comparing it to something in a completely different league and it did pretty dang good! I ultimately sold it because having Sony and Canon was a tad bit annoying. Part of me wishes I was in the Canon ecosystem instead but I'm happy with where I'm at with my gear. Enjoy the camera and hopefully the videos help!
