very nice! The best place to put sync points are actually where there is some shaking and you can see a lot of distant objects. If it's a really smooth moment it can actually make it harder to sync because the software needs some shaky video to compare to the shaky gyro information. It try's to automatically find the shaky moments of your video which is why it made one when you landed.
Thanks for the tips! I was following Oscar Liang's tutorial about adding sync points during smooth forward motion, but I'll have to reassess that info. Luckily I don't have to worry about sync points for the most part :)
Thanks.. I just got it because I have the session for my smaller quads, but as you said, doesnt really work with it that well... But I am getting a hero black 10 so I will se how that works good video, nice shots, informative, thanks.
Thank you for the tutorial video. I will be using this information to improve my own channel. Doing mainly motocross footage so this will come in handy. Especially with my HERO 5 Session, I won't have to use the built in stabilization anymore which will allow me to increase the resolution of my footage without loosing the stabilization now that I know how to edit it in properly. Thank you again.
The sync points do NOT do what you think they do. The gyro data can get out of sync *temporally* with the video. The sync points are the equivalent of video clappers so sync audio. So if you place a sync point at a smooth place, there's nothing happening in either the video or the gyro data for ReelSteady to recognize. You want a location where there is a sharp isolated jump in both video motion and gyro data. The algorithm will shift the gyro data so that these spikes are aligned. The best place to sync is towards the beginning and the end of the clip, when an external event takes place. Takeoff, landing, or if you crash or hit something are perfect sync locations. The zooming effect is a preemption of a rapid turn in the video. It doesn't happen after you stop moving. It happens before you start moving. It needs to crop in to be able to rotate the image as it leads into a shaky bit or fast pan. If it's too much, turn down the zoom speed in settings.
Hey mate Is there a way to over come the dropping of frames when two reelsteady clips are joined ?? As GoPro splits into 4GB clips so many of my shots fall into this overlap Is there a way to join the clips then render the file together “on Mac “ Any solutions would be appreciated as this is a substantial issue that doesn’t seem to be addressed anywhere Thanks
@@QuickSticks8771 I'm not aware of this problem. But I think it might be unavoidable. If Reelsteady processes two video clips separately, the resulting smoothed videos may not match. For example the end of the first (smoothed) clip may end up (per the smoothing algorithm) rotated or zoomed slightly differently from the beginning of the second clip. So it will look like a suddenly jerk or glitch when joined. If Reelsteady is capable, you should join the videos first before stabilization. This will require the use of the official GoPro app so that the gyro data is maintained. It used to be called GoPro Quick. If you're on Mac OS, both QuickTime Pro and iMovie can stitch videos and re-render them. I personally don't like iMovie, because I think the render quality is horrible. And QuickTime Pro is paid. Otherwise there are some free simple video editing programs, but I would have to Google for them.
gizmoguyar thanks for the quick reply The issue is once you re render in quick time or premier pro it loses the metadata and reelsteady can’t use it There has to be a way of simply re joining two clips from the same video file without re rendering There must be thousands of people with this issue 🤔
@@QuickSticks8771 you can't join two video clips of most video file types without modifying the meta data. That's just how video files work. Otherwise there would be two sets of meta data in a single video file. That meta data needs to be re calculated to represent the full video. And of course most programs can't read the gyro data. But I'm fairly sure that the official GoPro desktop app can re-render split clips into a single video file and keep the gyro data. The gyro data is in a proprietary format. So it's unlikely that you'll find any other program that can do this.
Thanks for the tutorial! Easy to understand! I do have a problem though, GoPro splits files up as it limits file sizes to 4gb. If I apply Reelsteady GO to both images then later merge them in post, they don't match up in frame. Is there a way to join the files with the tracking information?

So if they want you to record without hypersmooth enabled aren't they just applying hypersmooth in post ? Or does hypersmooth look different from reel steady ? Great video Ed
Hey thanks for chiming in man, all good! Yeah there's definitely a different look to Reelsteady, much more smoothed out and "perfect" looking. I'll use it for nature/cinematic stuff for sure, but not for faster freestyle or chase footage.
@@EdRickerVlogs the only thing I am chasing at this time is the pause button hahahahaha. I am having hard time getting used to acro mode lol. It's super exciting though :D

Would it not make more sense to shoot in a ratio of 1:1? This way it would have a square instead of a rectangle and I guess this might remove the odd zooming artefact?
*Pro Tip* : If you use GoPro on the FPV, just know that many people are opening their GoPros to remove much of the inmates, to reduce the weight of the GoPro without destroying it. Then you will have a GoPro that is FPV friendly, and won't drain your battery. *Pro Tip 2* : You can use GyroFlow which is a free software, works for more cameras then just GoPro *BUT* is bit more work. *Pro Tip 3* : If you have made a high quality FPV video, it's best to upload that video to Vimeo over CZcams. Which is a quality over quantity
How does the time lapse feature of ReelSteady Go work? Does it speed up a regular speed video clip? If so, by how much? Or does it merely stabilize a time lapse video clip that's already been speeded up in the GoPro?
If it's still showing progress and working through the clip, then everything should be ok. But if it's frozen and hasn't moved in a while, then probably cancel it and try again from the start.
Can someone help me with realsteedy saved video. I have rendered 2 videos and I couldn't find them in any files. Where can I find the videos. I have demo version.
Thanks so much for this man, best one out there! I keep having an issue with one clip where it stops rendering and freezes on the same spot, any suggestions?

Hi thanks. ABout to try this out. Can I ask you something. When is the best time to use ReelSteady? I edit my videos in Premiere Pro. So should I stablise the "raw" footage first in Reelsteady then import to Premiere and colour grade, add slow motion etc? I just dont want Reelsteady to change the framerate it if its 120 to 60 fps or degrade the data for colour grade etc..
Hi Patrick, In order to preserve the gyro data that Reelsteady works from, processing in Reelsteady must be the first step in your workflow unfortunately. However, no degradation of quality will happen and you'll be able to do all of the grading/slowing you'd like afterward.
It's actually best to turn GoPro 5's normal stabilization off when used on an FPV quad. The high frequency oscillations of the props will mess with GoPro 5's stabilization protocol and create weird jello-y vibrations in the video. It's one of those view situations where it's better to turn stabilization off.
Hey Ed, thanks for the vid! I shot in 5k, 25fps, 16x9, hyper smooth off, Linear and ReelSteady tells me "sorry, this shooting mode is not supported" - I would really need those shots stabilized do you have any idea?! :)
Hi Steve, hmmm that sounds odd. As far as I know, 5k is supported, although when mixed with Linear I'm not sure. Perhaps you can record a quick clip with 5k 16x9 Wide or 4k 16x9 Linear and see if both clips can be processed by Reelsteady. Then you can figure out which of the settings is not working for you. However if Reelsteady can't process a clip, there's generally no workaround besides trying to use Warp Stabilizer in Premiere or something like that. Hope it doesn't come to that!
