In today’s video, we give you a property update, but more importantly Bill takes a ride down memory lane; as he remembers Hurricane Agnes, and the effect it had on his family and the area he grew up. He was 15 years old when Hurricane Agnes hit Panama City on June 19, 1972. It lost much of its power once it made land and was downgraded to a tropical storm. People paid little attention to it after that. That was until this tropical storm met up with a cold front above Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania and the Southern Tier region of NY, that included, but wasn’t limited to Corning, Gang Mills, Presho, and Elmira. This is the region Bill grew up in. His family and friends all lived here. It was so unexpected. Bill spends time reliving these moments as the 50th anniversary quickly approaches.

I was there. Elmira, Corning, and Keuka. Last days at school were steady rain in June '72. [Nixon -vs- McGovern later that year.] i was in downtown Elmira with water up to my chest near Church St/Railroad Ave with water rising quickly. I wasn't concerned for safety until I learned later that copperhead snakes were in the water.

Great share, guys. While I’ve lived in the south most of my life and through several hurricanes (including Katrina & Harvey), we have been fortunate not to have lost anything more than our electricity and some tree limbs. But we’ve known so many who have and it takes so much time to rebuild. 🥰

Good job documenting the disaster. Having gone through some hurricanes when lived in North Carolina, flooding was the worst. Watching you guys work on your property makes me want to keep flunking retirement. After yard work work on Saturday, Jessica said a condo doesn’t look too bad. But then you’d have to move. NO, staying put! Good job putting the video together. 😀👍

  • @ebikeadventuresinpennsylva4140

I lived in Lock Haven Pa at the time. I just turned 9;years old. Our family escaped the flood waters by fortunately living on one of the highest points of the city. What I remember most was we were somewhat isolated and on my birthday I received a pegboard game that used the golf tees like you see at the Cracker Barrel stores. The reason was all the nearby stores were flooded with the exception of one which didn’t have inventory of Childress toys. I really felt cheated that year 😂. But as an adult I realized just how lucky I was that my family was spared the horrendous damage.

One thing we didn't say was that Bill's brother, Jim, turned 11 the day of the flood. Yes, I do not believe for a minute that you or he really enjoyed that particular birthday. What a crazy time. You were cheated that year, but as a kid you don't stop to look at the bigger picture.

Wow, that flood in 72 was terrible. I can see why Bill gets emotional when he talks about it. That was a nightmare experience to go through but at least it was just property that was damaged and the family were all ok.
We live in a river valley, and we had the worst floods here on record two years ago, but we are up on slightly higher ground here.
I suppose these extreme weather events will get more common going forward.😨

But you never know one of these days they could have a heavy rain and have some really heavy flooding. That's crazy all that devastation, I'm surprised the whole town didn't just fold up😳😳 Lol I was 3 at that time so excuse me for not remembering 😂 Do you remember the thruway collapse ???? Thanks for sharing your part of the story, we love to learn things about people 😀 Have a great week Bill and Deanna 😁👍🏻

We would be real surprised if you remembered it being only 3 at the time. No, Bill says he doesn't remember when that happened. When and where did it collapse? He wants to look it up. He left the area in 79 so he's forgotten some of it. Actually, he's trying to look it up right now.

@@LivingtheSilverLife NYS thruway bridge in between exit 28 and 27 , I can't remember when it was but it was awful, cars and trucks didn't see the bridge gone then eventually right over . I do remember, I go over that bridge everyday 😳

Bill looked it up. It happened in 89. It was awful.

I'm going to say that, luckily, I've not experienced anything destructive like that. I prefer to not have those types of memories. That being said, it's very interesting that Bill does remember that stuff. I really like that you shared all the old pics of the flood. And the historic facts you share with them. I always think it's so crazy how fast flooding can just take over towns. And it's so hard to imagine the height of the water in many floods. I did get to see the flood of 93 here in Missouri. It didn't effect me or my family personally, but I was able to see the water levels reach wild heights and can remember driving near the water as it covered a section of a major highway that was actually quite a distance from the normal banks of the river. It was quite an odd feeling. And it's odd now to see a building that sits in that spot and see how large the building is and to remember only seeing the top part of it because the water was so high. Really doesn't seem like it could be real. Sorry I rambled. Were the little birdies just sleeping? Why were they on the ground? Hope their mama is still taking care of them. You guys could have campfires for ever with all that wood! lol. Hey I like the picnic table covers. Never seen ones that cover the seats too. That's awesome! You guys have done so much in such a short time on that property! Good for you guys!!!

It is crazy how the pictures really show the destructive power of the flood. The flood was bad enough, but then comes the cleanup. He says he'll never forget the smell of the mud. It was terrible. They had to deal with it all summer. I bet that was an odd feeling to go so close to the waters edge where there was normally houses and businesses and just see their roof tops. I personally haven't had any experiences like that, but Bill has told me so much about it over the years.
The birds were sleeping. I don't know why she put them on the ground. It doesn't seem like it would be the safest place for them to be. As a matter of fact, we went by the nest today, and it was empty. Of course, we hope it's because they were old enough to leave the nest, but we are afraid that something got them.
We can definitely have campfires forever. The tablecloth with seat covers came from Amazon. I have bought them two summers in a row. I honestly can't say I'm happy with them though. They fade so quickly. But in fairness, I leave mine out all the time. They are also very thin so they tear easily. I wish I could find some better quality ones.
      Be safe, Bill and DeAnna

@@LivingtheSilverLife oh no. I hope the little birds are ok too. Well that’s too bad about the quality of the table and seat covers. Our winds would probably tear them up fast.

Wow what a story. Flood is such an experience. We had a big one here in 2013. It came down the foothills like a tsunami. It was horrible. If you search our content, search for Galveston. I told the story of the 1900 hurricane there. And how I discovered my family was there. The video is when we use to do paranormal. But I tell the story why it is so haunted. You want the one titled: Hurricane 1900 Destroyed Galveston Island | Texas Haunted Hotels Tremont House

Thanks for sending me to that video. It was really good. I’ve heard so much about the Tremont and all the activity there. But what I really want is on of those blueberry martinis.

I am surprised that that house was built so close to where it flooded but here in California they do the same thing they build where things have been wiped out. There’s lots of places I would love to live but I know that it’s not smart to build there so I don’t

I would be terrified if I had water coming in my home I’ve been very lucky it’s never happened here but you never know what me happen in the future. We don’t need live near any river or lake but California doesn’t get a lot of rain but every 7 to 10 Year we get heavy rain

What sort of wildlife do you have on your property and in the general area? Do you have bears? I live in Central Indiana. No bears here, thankfully.

We do have black bear in the area. We’ve only actually seen one on our property. I know there are more in the area. We also have deer, turkey, raccoon, porcupine, chipmunks, owls, and tons of birds.

Now when you guys start traveling again are you going to store your tractor somewhere else for nobody steals it or do you have a way to secure it there on the property?

    • @LivingtheSilverLife
      @LivingtheSilverLife  Před 2 lety

The tractor actually belongs to Bill's brother, David. He doesn't live far from us so we borrow it, and then we return it when David needs it. So when we leave for the winter, we will just take it down the hill to David.
