Update on Ava and Pearl, two rescued Belgian Draft horses after their surgeries to remove eye tumors

If you haven't been following our story, we rescued two horses recently that both had tumors in their eyes. Our foundation has experience with these types of tumors/conditions because of the first horses we ever rescued as a foundation. Lucky our first rescue, had squamous cell carcinoma which is a type of cancerous tumor. His previous owners let a small tumor that could have been treated with surgery, grow to a point that his eye ruptured and caused him horrible pain. While taking care of Lucky we found out that these tumors can be treated and a horse can have a happy life if taken care of early. Ava and Pearl were taken to the vet shortly after arriving to the farm to have their tumors removed. We plan to do chemotherapy eye ointment in addition to the surgery to help shrink any remaining tumor that was not removed during the surgery.
This video is an update on how Ava and Pearl are doing after their surgeries and how they are integrating into the herd. Also, this is an update on the new horses we rescued back a few weeks ago and a name reveal for the little black horse that stole our hearts and snuck onto the freedom ride home. We appreciate all the suggestions on names and it was a tough decision. We did leave the final decision to Tarin our intern because the little guy is bonded to her.

As a growing horse rescue group, we rely on monetary donations to keep the organization moving forward. The Big Hoof Foundation will always be transparent with how your donations are used. 100% of the money we raise goes directly to the rescued horses' bail fees, transport, feed, hay, medical bills, medications, alternative medical treatments, supplements, surgeries, etc. Every dollar raised is for the horses!
Our ability to help these horses is only because of the generous donations from our subscribers and followers! Please consider making a tax deductible donation to the Big Hoof Foundation to help us save more of these precious lives from shipping to slaughter and provide them with the care they deserve. Thank you everyone for your continued support in saving these gentle giants! We could not be saving these lives without you!

Another way to support us is with feed...the one item WE always need is FEED! If you would like to send a gift/donation of feed (Alfa Pro or beardless wheat) you can send that through our local feed store, HF & C Amarillo. When you call, tell them you are sending a gift to Fletcher Farms Amarillo/Big Hoof Foundation and they will add the gifts to our account.
Alfa-Pro is a complete pelleted alfalfa mixed with vitamins and minerals. Alfa-Pro is $17.45 per bag. They do offer a discount if you purchase by the pallet (40 - 50 pound bags) $16.95 per bag if purchased by the pallet.
We are also feeding round bales of beardless wheat and the horses go through about 2 bales every few days. A round bale of beardless wheat is $140. We also use square bales of beardless wheat and can be purchased through HF&C Amarillo.

Big Hoof gets it!! Double enucleation is not the best answer for most horses when sight remains. Many do not adjust well and their quality of life is poor. It is often done to make it easier for the rescue. If all treatments fail after extensive efforts, I would be more understanding, but even then a horse under constant stress is not a happy horse! Please donate to this rescue/SANCTUARY! They put quality of life, regardless of the amount of work/expense needed, above all else. I am incredibly impressed!

So joyful to see all the Belgians, Stanley and the donkeys enjoying the best life ever at Fletcher Farms. My Appy mare developed squamous cell carcinoma when she was 25 years old around her rectum or butt area. Had a great vet that did chemo therapy with needles around the site and it totally disappeared and she was cancer free for a year but it came back with a vengance and so she had to be put to sleep after a couple of months with the second squamous cell carciconma at age 27.

Julie some people with YT channels have what is called a super thanks. So when someone goes to make a reply here like I am right now, there is a small heart with a $ sign inside the heart. People can then hit it and make a donation of their choice. I am not sure if you already have this or not but I dont see it so I thought I would mention it just in case. Many people may really love your site and want to make a contribution and this is the easiest way to do it. Some people may be retired and having trouble making ends meet but still want to contribute a dollar or two toward your mission to save lives of horses at the end of the line with no hope. Every dollar will help you. Thanks! ❤️

Belgian horses are genetically predisposed to developing ocular squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), the most common cancer of the equine eye. Horses with two copies of the DDB2 genetic variant are four times more likely to develop SCC than those with one or no copies. The Veterinary Genetics Laboratory (VGL) offers a genetic risk test for SCC in Belgian horses.
    British Equine Veterinary Association

Mar 23, 2019 - Belgian horses are commonly affected with ocular squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)
SCC can cause visual impairment or blindness and can be life threatening. Early detection of tumors may lead to a more successful outcome. Treatment options include surgery, radiation therapy, and topical chemotherapy. Limiting exposure to ultraviolet radiation may also help prevent SCC, especially in horses with white or partially white coats. This can be done by providing face shades, shade in pastures, or keeping the horse stabled during peak sunlight hours. Routine ophthalmological exams are also advised.

Back in the 1980s and 90s I was professionally involved in a couple of small collaborative medical/veterinary oncology research projects, and having been involved with horses my entire life (I come from a long line of farriers), I found it all simply fascinating. The advances in the knowledge of the genome in the first part of the 21stC are teaching us even more than the advances in medical imaging did in the latter part of the 20thC.

@suzanne9622. Very good information. My horse doesn't go out on pasture without a fly mask. She puts her head down voluntary what is pretty cool. Greetings from Germany. 😊

I believe Friesian horses also are more prone to this as well. As both breeds originate from North Western Europe, which is more prone to grey skies and rain much of the time, this might be a factor. The USA seems to have much more sunshine, except in the far north. I am from the UK. Alot of grey skies and rain.

Panus an eye disease that occurs at low levels in GSD that we do not yet know causation for has been linked to hi levels of sunshine & hi altitudes were there is less protection from strong sunshine. Have had Shepherds for 60+ years never saw disease until moved to CA. New England were I came from has plenty of tree cover, 4 seasons & lots of grey. Very Northern European in climate tho a bit colder generally.

Hi, my dog had a mushroom tumor on her front leg. Due to her lean body type, it could not be operated on. I gave her Natures sunshines products. It's called cellular detox. The vet saw her almost a year later, and the tumor was gone. She asked me what i did, and I told her she just blew it off. Debbie Jay

Oh wow! I will absolutely check into that! I am a firm believer in natural remedies...however it's difficult to find a vet or doctor to believe in the same. I have been doing research on my own to find other treatments just like we did for some of the horses arthritis. I love hearing other peoples success stories! Thank you for the info!

@@FletcherFarmsAmarilloDont know how expensive SAM-e is for horses but in humans & dogs super good for joint & bone pain. It kept me up & walking for 10 years w 2 bone on bone knees. Have also uses on my dogs w Hip Dysplasia.
For cancer look into the use of various mushrooms like Turkey Tail.
Also off label use of generic drugs ( ie no big profit 4 pharma so research ignores) includes Tagamet, ivermectin & panacur.

Keep your personal life private. People do not need to know or care that much. Just a quick we're sick, on vacation, etc. ,so the that gossips don't get cranked up and worry people unnecessarily. Keep the parts of your life separate, so that the problems of one section dont ruin your whole life. Family, work, friends, marriage, ? Your work with these horses is outstanding and I commend you!

Back in the 1980's we had a pony who lost an eye, we don't know what from, he was healthy one day n the next he has his eye taken by a mobile vet, I always felt bad for him cause he was the only pony or horse we had at our house, he lived to be almost 30 before having to be put to sleep, but I loved him like a brother, he was there for me after my mom was killed in a bad accident.

I know how hard it is to put drops in the eyes of cats and dogs, so I imagine it's hundreds of times harder to treat big strong wiggly horses' eyes -// and to avoid accidental injury to yourself'

Hey Julie, That is all very good news and wonderful to hear the to joy in your voice once again. That was an awful streak of distressing bad fortune that you and Corrie endured. Did you accidentally on purpose not let us know how your head is feeling? Of course we are concerned about the horses, but it is not at all conceited for you to give us a status report. You work very hard, with no time off in which to rest your head. How are you feeling? Concussion wise? We do care. ❤
