Building the Lego Emerald Night

- After being destroyed by the Minecraft creeper, it was time to rebuild the Lego Emerald Night and the perfect opportunity to kit out the locomotive with lights and a motor. The instructions certainly left a lot to be desired but I persevered and the end result really is quite special. Enjoy.

"It reminds me of the Polar Express"
*slowly turns away and cries in corner*
the emerald night looks like the flying scotsman
Ioan Martin It was a piece of reference for the designers I think
Patience of a saint Will!
This train was inspired by flying scotsman
It reminds me of the Flying Scotsman with the German smoke deflectors lol
This is awesome Will mate! So smooth and a lovely loco! Look forward to more OO and N Gauge vids!
love it
I watch your videos all the time
Wow Will, now im off to the store to buy this haha. It looks like a fun build! Nice Vid! keep the minecraft vids coming too!
Loving the Lego videos. Keep up the good work.
Another brilliant Video in the IC82 The LEGO Collection Series of Videos InterCity82 .. Well done. I loved seeing you build the Emerald Night Locomotive, and you showing us all your problems with the Locomotive when you go through the building stage of Locomotive. I guess it does warn people of problems you will encounter when building the Set if you actually have the LEGO Set or get it in the future or though it is now a discontinued LEGO Set seeing that the LEGO Emerald Night Set was released back in 2009. You did say though somewhere at the beginning of the Video that you have had the Set since 2009 or 2010. However, I am not sure when you have had but there is a possibility that you bought it in 2009, because it is a 2009 LEGO Set. The LEGO Set was released in 2009. Anyway, enough of me going through a few technical stuff of when the LEGO Set was released and other things, but I would just like to say "well done" to you once again for Uploading such a good Video. Also, before I post this Comment, I would have also liked to have seen you build the Coach again as well. I would really loved to see how you put the Coach together if it is easy to build the Coach as well. It would have been nice to see if you get problems building Coach like you do with the Locomotive. I also enjoyed you filming the Locomotive being ran on the IC82 LEGO Test Layout too, using LEGO +Power Functions. Anyway, that's enough of me talking and posting such a long Comment on this Video. It's a good job you don't have a only a certain number of characters you can use in one Comment any more, is it! Otherwise, I would have to post this Comment over probably about 10 or more different Comment's!
I am not colorblind and I have the same problem. I agree with you!! Someone finally gets it!
Well, technically, there was a British locomotive with a large electric headlight up on top of the boiler, Midland Railway Lickey Banker 2290, otherwise known as Big Bertha, which I think was by far one of the grandest British steam locomotives ever built...
I hope you hit 💯k subs soon ☺️
if you haven't found out yet, your emerald night is getting stuck on the part that holds where the piston would be. if you get another piece like it and attach it behind the first one, your train will go backwards perfectly
Great vid but there was actually a British steam loco with a top mounted headlight, the lickey banker or big Bertha
Well, I'd say you were "Partly Right" about the lamps at the start of the video. British steam engines didn't have big headlamps like American engines, true, but it was a common sight to see "a" headlamp on the smokebox of a steam engine, depending on lamp codes.
Note: stage 5 to 17 strip-down and rebuild. We call that "all part of the fun of model railroading".
Actually, two British steam locos (Flying Scotsman and the Coronation Scot) were fitted with headlamps and bells to fit American standards.
Looks very nice I always wanted a Lego train set
Great videos like always
Great video will! The lamp on the front does happen in England, it stands for stopping passenger :)
Excellent! :)
Technically Big Bertha on the Lickey Incline had a big American style headlamp, got passed on to one of the engines that replaced it in banking service as I recall.
i love the emerald night butt i hate theres only 1 wagon so i bought 2 more emerald night just to get 2 more wagons and i gave the extra 2 locomotives to my nephews
Less money on Lego, more money on new trousers:P
IC82, most american steam locos have head lights mounted in the center of the boiler. A few would have it up high, but the Emerald Night doesn't replicate that. Don't mean to be a rivet counter, just wanted to let you know. :)
EDIT: Also, the reverse sticking was solved on mine by making the cylinder longer. I may be able to upload a vid of it if it would help.
I like your videos
I'm not colour blind but even I have problems identifying the different Lego shades. Two of my grandsons don't seem to have any problem as I found out when I 'helped' them build the Lego Star Wars Millennium Falcon!!!
WOOOW!!! This is, without a doubt, one of the coolest LEGO sets ever made! I hope they'll make more steam locomotive sets in the future! How long did it take to build her?
TheLegend 27 oh crap your that player from the game if war advert how cool!
mr chuff chuff
I'm sorry?
TheLegend 27 watch the game of ear advert and you'll see what I mean
I hate to disappoint you, sir, but I haven't been in any advertisements, I'm not even famous, trust me, I'm not the player in the advertisement.
Oh no probs nice meeting you though well happy modeling
(And CZcamsing)
Most enjoyable even when you rant!
You, my good sir deserve another subscriber :)
I've been watching your video's for the past few days :D
Have you ever considering trying to fit this engine with a smoke generator?
it's something I've always wanted to try with my Emerald Night, but never got the chance to. :)
and sound ;)
i think the flexi track is built to only go forward as the joiners are a facing forward and the wheels are getting stuck you may find it derail aswell if you go to fast
The pistons get locked up in reverse. So what you need to do is move them back one wheel in Order to remove jamming.
It may sound like a washing machine, but it still looks good! :)
Hi will! I just wanted to say i love every single one of your videos! I had to do this before everyone starts commenting on this video lol
You get used to the unusual colours in the instruction manuals after a while :)
The coupling rods on either side are offset 90 degrees to allow for an even torque delivery over a 360 degree turn of the wheels, with each power stroke beginning at every 90 degree turn of the wheels. If there were to be no offset, the torque would be delivered to the wheels once every 180 degree turn of the wheels and it would be twice the amount as that of the 90 degree offset, thereby resulting in jerky travel and considerable wheel slip during the power stroke.
I think you had those instructions booklet troubles because it is old LEGO. I have new LEGO and it is perfectly clear. Still, I do agree that it doesn't look like black. I'll compare it with my old LEGO to see a difference. P.S I've always watched you're videos ever since I found out about it.
Wow! :-D
I had this model, along with many other Lego planes and trains that I was going to make a display with, but I had put all of my Lego models into a large black plastic trash bag so I could re arrange my room, and my brother thought it was garbage and put the bags in our trashcan :( I was so sad, I didn't realize until after the trash man came by, I thought my mom had moved the bags but Nope:(
he has owes you alot now and if he doesnt make him
The emerald night looks very similar to the br flying scotsman with german smoke deflectors and the coach looks like a pullman coach.
I got that Lego set but the motor it ran on was sold out , so you are lucky.
awesome I just started doing lego vids as well! I just got the Lego lone ranger constitution train chase set
Not to nitpick, but you might want to stick an annotation in at 43:43
You said "Hornby's instructions" when obviously you meant "Lego's instructions"
It's an impressive model. Handled the tight curves with almost no slow-down. I think the flexi-track is more the blame than the model for the issues in reverse. I suspect it was the trailing truck causing the loco to stick. The pony truck, driving wheels and tender have more than two wheels the help keep them running true, whilst in reverse the trailing truck does not. At least when going forwards the driving bogey is pulling it along parallel to the track so it just follows.
I think most of my viewers realise it was a slip of the tongue.
My guess is that the rods connecting the drive wheels to the pistons is too short; in reverse, the short rod pushes up on the top of the cylinder, jamming the whole mechanism.
I've had this challenge before, and made my own rods; they work more realistically than LEGO's original design, if it isn't colored properly.
Edward Tear
I would love to buy one and do things to it like make it more like a proper a1, buy custom coaches from eBay that match the engine, and lay track around my house and make it so I could send it from my kitchen to my lounge so I could take my food without dropping it for once.
I see Knee! And a pair of Max?
I wonder what the words on the tender stands for
Always loved this set but never got to own one :( Hoping to get one someday
I'm sure you will! There are plenty around, still.
I am hoping to get one also, but the plenty that are around are too expensive :(
I wonder if anyone ever installed sound in one of these?
Nice video Will, well done ! How much did it cost when you bought it ?
It is not just lego other construction toys are like that and that they show light grey when it is actually dark grey
YAY
Her axcels jam at times, as mine does too, even with out the motor
+ic82 i think the head codes for british railways had required the lamps to be on a lamp iron on the top of the locomotive for some specific head codes for specific types of trains like goods or passengers or empty passenger stock
☻🚂🚃🚃🤔
that is a lego technic motor and battery back. I should know because I have those for my lego technic V12 car engine.
1:38 except Big Bertha whose headlamp was the given to a 9f
It looks like the flying Scotsman in British railways
It might also be based on the "The flying scotsman on the American tour
Plus the engine was not gracefully going backwards because of the connection rods getting stuck as they aren't the best.
You should get the Wolverhampton wolf/wonder class 66
The Emerald Night Looks Like A German Locomotive.
DalepigWithWingz its in LNER apple green so nahhh
If you get two of them you can get two coaches
whats the original video with it in?
I hope you do get a next coach
Hey IC82, is the set physically hard to assemble? I am fond of lego's but some sets look simple but there a "train wreck" in a box. I still havent assembled mine to see if it has possible collectors value because they are hard to find, but they are still available and I don't want to wait any longer...
have you done the the horizon express
You should get a euro star set
you could of just slid the rod out, put the block in, and then slide the rod back in :P
At 43.42 did you blame hornby for the instructions?
Those the set bring power function?
I just left out that bit in number 5. Don't know what the point of it was. Not a decoration though because it's underneath the loco
Its a change Lego made to the instructions after discovering that without it, the gear on the axle parallel to the locomotive length can slide off the end of the axle when running.
+InterCity82. It's based on the flying scots man when she was on tour in America.
then wheres the bell
Someone told me it’s an americanized flying Scotsman but in the book that LEGO made it said it was a class a3 super pacific so I just don’t know if you know pls reply
It's a Lego model of the flying Scotman did I say that right? I am American
I built this when I was 7 an it was easy
Minearia62 ok people that’s my old brothers account and I hate minecraft
Will, don't worry it's happened to me before mate.
Did you have this problem the first time you built this set?
A cream cog!!!
You should get a Hornby Live Steam Set
Another lego train video please
Me and my friend love your videos by the way i am building quite a large model railway any tips??? i am colour blind too i know how you feel
What happened to the uploading of the following video, that was worded on the screen at 44:57 - 45:02, where it says "Next Time: Kitting out the Horizon Express", where you fit a motor and lights to the LEGO Horizon Express (TGV) train?
Jacob Wilson c
Uh, the Polar Express is pulled by a Berkshire, modeled after the Pere Marquette 1225, so not really sure how this remindes you of the movie.
do you have a creeper?
where did you get the set
43:42 I didn't know Hornby did Lego
its not hornby
EMERALD NIGHT
Have you seen the Lego ice train
What creeper doing on this video?
Also, is that a paper creeper? :D
why dont you get the lego maersk train
I watched this video ages ago
Well if my mum lets me buy it off eBay I will make sure that I don’t put that piece in that area
good luck finding an affordable one
I hope to see other LEGO steamies. They are much better than those ugly foreign HST trains.
POLAR EXPRESS, I though that too....
That turn is on flexi track isn't it that is why stopped
When will the next n gauge project be?
The funnel can cause problems
i think the music was a bit off
