The emerald night is such a beautiful train. I just tore apart my city to redo the lay out. I wanted to add some levels and try a train. I was never into the trains before. The emerald night is the only one I ever purchased and it been sitting in my closet boxed for years. Goes so well with the modulars. I think I'll add it.
I agree with the horrible sound PF has.. but I still prefer my loco to have direct power from the motor to pistons. Check out my flying scotsman MOC of the emerald night. both IR receiver and battery box are in the tender! :)
Bravo, Yet Another Good Video from you. I have always preferred to use 9-Volt but being on a tight budget, i can only use power functions. Also, a recommendation, you should move the Bike Shop and cafe closer to your residential area, it seems like it might fit better there.
Alex Nunes Thank you for responding, i make that recomendation because in my own city, i have spot reserved for that and the Lego City House right out side my residential area, facing Downtown.
Thanks a lot! I really wanted to see your Emerald Night running on your tracks. I also got a Emerald Night but I was wondering if it was wise to add the power functions to the trains. sadly I don't have the 9 volt tracks so do you think it's wise to buy the power functions for the train?
I had the same issue with the pistons when going backwards. To fix it I replaced the 5 studs long plate with one that's 7 studs long, and moved the dark grey axle 2 studs back on the rod that connects to the wheels. I hope this made any sense. Love the videos!
Even with that second part the piston and connecting rods still lock up. The issue really that both sets of flanged wheels aren't powered along with the length in between the piston and lead drive wheels being too long.
For the Pistons/ siderods and it still gets jammed going backwards. Nice video by the way. Other than that little nuisance with the piston, I love the set.
If you're talking about the 88002 Power Function Train Motor. I've just tried that this morning. The cords are long enough and there are two instead of one connecting to the tender. But the problem I had was that the motor didn't have enough torque to push the whole locomotive and kept wheeling into place (I did take off the gear on the locomotive's axis). This may also have been because my train track are laying on the carpet instead of a flat hard surface. I'm still trying to make it work with the 88002 motor though so it can go a lot faster.
Question what is the power thing using I don't know what that is I'm sorry but I don't know what it is used for because I never I can't find it on any website
If anyone is reading my comment, I know how to make your Emerald Night go faster and not have the issue of pistons locking up! I do not have videos of how to do it but I can explain it to you!
I think because when you go backwards I think Lego wants you to make it realistic so like instead of going so fast backwards bumping in to the coaches I think that that's for a lock to go slow backwards for more realistic touch.
Sean Aba, not at all, it was an engineering fail. A real steam engine is actually made to go backwards smoothly. If a real life steam engine piston fails, the entire rod would actually crack and break. Good thing it can be fixed by 6 pieces.
I was wondering about the power functions and 9v train motor. Could you attach the power functions battery box or other 9v battery boxes to the 9v motor so it'll take battery power once it drives over a piece of non electric track? Just wondering because I know the 9v motor accepts battery power instead of rail power.
Hi Alex, have you tried Electric, Wire with Brick 2 x 2 x 2/3 Pair and Electric, Light Brick 1 x 2 with Single Side Light to your 9v trains? It would bring them to life!
Build your own, that's what I did. But make sure you read over the instruction manual for any pieces you do not have. I can also tell you how to make the train go even faster than ordinary
You're going to need a PF XL motor, then the gear alignment will have to be the 16 piece gear, the 24 piece gear and then the 8 piece gear instead of usually being 16, 20, 12
You're going to need a PF XL motor, then the gear alignment will have to be the 16 piece gear, the 24 piece gear and then the 8 piece gear instead of usually being 16, 20, 12. I can also teach you how to increase pulling power (torque) Greg De Ligne
Is that set of wheels you added to the tender already made with a remote control? Or do you have to like build it? Cause this seems a LOT easier than fully adding everything to the train, (im kinda dumb when it comes to this stuff) And if those wheels are 1 piece with a control whats it called?
superstarwarsfan67 Undecided on that right now. I am leaning on not getting them as I already have the Metro Liner and Horizon Express as speed trains. The Freight train is nice, but a bit pricey. I may pick it up if I can find a good deal.
Those cylinders aren't hard to extend. Also, if you haven't already, remove the gears in the bottom. I like mine on PF as it has a lot more power, but I can see why you want 9v.
MrRailroadrunner I noticed that PF had a lot more power as well. It also seemed to withstand a higher work load. I may go back to PF, but for now I'm happy with it.
How's that motor wheel part/ the 9v controlled? What is the controller? I wanna do this to my emerald night but Idk what stuff to get. I looked on Amazon when I search 9v Lego motor I just find this but different versions with wiring and stuff. I wanna get the one you have but I can't find it.

@@alexnunes for the help I just had one more question. What does that last link one do? The train track contacts with wire. Is it supposed to help with charging something?
@@koltarus3561 This is all assuming you have 9v track. That last part connects the speed regulator to the tracks. The electric current needs to run in the tracks to power the motor in the train. Hope that helps.
I'd say yes, but only because I think buying 9v track would likely be more expensive. I actually don't like PW. They have their place, but anything that is battery based is just a pain to deal with. Having it run from electricity from your home via the 9v speed regulator is just so much better than dealing with dead batteries.
You should replace the IR spot with the 1x1 slopes and 1x4 tiles for the 2x4 sloped with stripes. To me, it completes the engine's roundness instead of a random bulge in the engine.
Are you talking about the protrusion atop the middle of the boiler? That's not a "random bulge", that's the steam dome. Those are a thing that many real steam engines - including the LNER A3, the basis for the Emerald Night loco - have. Although it could be more accurately shaped. A 2x2 round plate, a 2x2 round tile, a couple of jumper plates, and a 1x2 tile might do the job.
Great Video Alex. I Made a Custom Coach car to add Power Functions to my Toy Story Train. It has the same problem. The front of the engine has wheel slippage. How could I add weight to it to prevent that. Any Ideas, I would apperciate it. Mardigrasman23 Lego #7597 Toy Story 3 Western Train Chase Set Review
Why didnt you make a fake emerald night carriage with 9v the axles and power the emerald night with it instead of ruining the look of the wheels on the tender.
TeamEmeraldElements yes.. the good old ones :) I prefer them a lot. Being able to use a remote control has its advantages, too, however, I don't like to depend on batteries. The 9V tracks also look better because of the metal on them.
+MrCM.Bricks Sorry, I realised that my little brother has figured out my pc password so I changed it. He dosen't know about the good old 9 volts so, sorry my emails also stopped working 9 months ago and they only just started working again. Sorry for any inconvenience!

Great work man! Absolutely stunning how you got that city build up.
best greets from germany!
great video. love the POV around the city
I see we think alike when it comes to this: it's a simple matter of putting the tender on the 9V motor bogie.
I agree with the horrible sound PF has.. but I still prefer my loco to have direct power from the motor to pistons. Check out my flying scotsman MOC of the emerald night. both IR receiver and battery box are in the tender! :)

The removing of the Pistons didn't upset me it just reminded me of the restoration of up 4014
Nice job. Wheel slippage is a common problem on real trains too. Especially large steamers
I tried doing this with my Emerald Night. It struggles though when I added 3 more cars (4 in total) behind it. I had to add an additional 9v motor
great video
I love your videos :)
You did what I did! But I'll try pennies instead of metal weights because I noticed it wore out my 9V motor after awhile.

Alex Nunes No problem :)
Great vid
I had this problem too with the piston getting the wheels jammed while I had this thing still put together.
I put a longer bar in the pistons and put it on the middle wheel and works fine backwards and looks WAY better
Dang that Lego train goes fast
Good idea with the pennies in the tender. I use a weight brick from another train ;)
Great very good video
Looking at the top right corner, HOLY SHARTS IS THAT GODZILLA IN 2:15
For the axle: use some silicon spray. Makes the plastic smooth.
Even with that second part the piston and connecting rods still lock up. The issue really that both sets of flanged wheels aren't powered along with the length in between the piston and lead drive wheels being too long.
That’s not the issue lol. The Piston is too short. Extend it and it runs smoothly
For the Pistons/ siderods and it still gets jammed going backwards. Nice video by the way. Other than that little nuisance with the piston, I love the set.
same, I hope LEGO brings out another similar model.
Normal LEGO trians can run on 9v tracks right?
Yes, they can.
yes but try running you will bllowl the train
sean star, powerfunction trains won't blow up 9V.... They only guide along the rail.
it can be either pf or 9v but for 12v i has a plan
Awesome thnks!

You can also use some small round black bricks for coals on top of those Pennies.
i seriously want the emerald night
So, could you use the placement of the 9V Motor under the tender, to run a PF Train Motor there? Or would the cords not be long enough?

When I get the emerald night I’m going to motorize it with 9 V same as the crocodile locomotive
I had to remove the Pistons on my emrald night bit I push it. I put them back on but to me it looks more real of it going backwards slowly.
I doubled the mod up too, but it still gets jammed
now can I transform a Emerald Night set into a full set.
