    The "a" might be further confusing because you use it with other words like "a little." So if you see an "a" or "an" alone or directly before, it would be used with countable nouns but paired with another word it may be used with uncountable nouns, e.g., "a little bit of" or "a lot of."

"I have 2 tips for you"? Or "I have two pieces of advice for you"? O_o PS: Thank you very much for your lessons, Rebecca!

  • @ysh50hk
    @ysh50hk Před 5 lety

    what if countable and uncountable nouns comes together as subjective on a sentence, what's the form of the verb would be like?
    for example,
    A book and furniture (is / are) he's favourite things.
    or
    Ham and cheese (is / are) good for making a sandwich.

    • @Mia-hc3ob
      @Mia-hc3ob Před 4 lety

      So an example would be; ''I had a burger and some juice for lunch.'' (Burgers being a countable and juice being uncountable.)
      It is possible but you have to use them in the right context.
      Hope this helps, stay safe, happy learning!

  • @christoff1499
    @christoff1499 Před 4 lety +1

    Except you can't always use 'some' or 'any' in any context. You would say "There is some information." or "There isn't any information."
    You **wouldn't** say "There is any information." or "There isn't some information".

    • @Mia-hc3ob
      @Mia-hc3ob Před 4 lety

      Yes the same as you wouldn't say ''I don't have any table.''. ''I don't have any table-s.'' would be correct or ''I don't have a table.'' 4:19
      Most of the time we use grammar according to what sounds right, we learn what sounds right through talking with people who speak the English language well. Grammar can be naturally picked up without realising it but for someone who is learning a language for the first time, learning something incorrect can be hard to correct later as it becomes a habit to say it like that.
      My advice: make sure you use several resources when trying to learn something correctly and whichever is used the most will most likely be correct.
      Stay safe, happy learning everyone. :)

    Is it correct to say "There is a lot of water" and "There are a lot of apples" or both sentences should go with There is? I get this doubt because I'm not sure what's stronger, the singularity of the word "lot" or the plurality of the word apples.

    • @micael1000ful
      @micael1000ful Před 9 lety +2

      PhantomRVM, You're right. In the second sentence "there are a lot of apples" you can't say "there is" because the verb refers to the noun "apples" and he is in plural. So, you can say "there are a lot of apples" or "there is a lot of apple". Keep practicing! Best, regards.

    • @ElprincipeHamlet
      @ElprincipeHamlet Před 8 lety +1

      +micael gonçalves you can't say "there is a lot of apple". you say: "There is an apple or there are a lot of apples"
      +PhantomRVM, you use "there is" with singular nouns and Uncountables nouns.
      "Water" is uncountable so you have to say "There is a lot of water" or "There isn't many ink" INK is uncountable, so that's why you have to use "there is" even you are saying there is a big amount of it. =D
