In this course you’ll practise what you learned in this lesson about uncountable nouns with quizzes and worksheets. PLUS, there are 9 more grammar lessons and quizzes to help you practise!
So many of YOUR English mistakes are related to the way that you use nouns! In this free video lesson, we are going to improve your use of English nouns!
There are two types of nouns - countable and uncountable. Knowing the difference between them and how you can use these types of nouns is really important. It affects how you use:
- articles (a/an/the)
- much/many
- some/any
- a little/a few
- so/such
Learning and understanding how countable and uncountable nouns are used differently in English will DRAMATICALLY improve your grammar!
I've made a worksheet that you can download so you can practice what you learn in this lesson.
This video, we’ll focus on uncountable nouns. You can check out my lesson on countable nouns right here: • Countable English Noun...
What you need to know about uncountable nouns:
Uncountable nouns are difficult to count! All of these nouns are uncountable:
- Liquids (water, milk, wine)
- Powders (flour, coffee, sugar)
- gases (air)
- electricity, money, music...
- abstract nouns (like happiness, motivation and luck)
Uncountable nouns have only one form - they cannot be plural.
You can’t use 'a' or 'an' with uncountable nouns because they are used with singular nouns (one) - and uncountable nouns can’t be counted!
You can’t use numbers with uncountable nouns!
You can use ‘some’ with uncountable nouns - because we use it to say there is an amount, but not a specific amount.
But you can also use uncountable nouns WITHOUT ‘some’: Can you get rice from the supermarket? When it’s not important to say how much!
Watch the video lesson to learn how you can quantify uncountable nouns.

Hi Emma! I'm your new student here, yes because I only found your AMAZING channel last week, and I'm not regretting it at all!! What I find a bit tricky sometimes is that some words can be countable in French (or in other languages I guess) and uncountable in English - and vice versa. Like "advice", I can count them in French :)
Thanks Emma!
That's definitely very tricky!
in spanish too, don´worry
Hello Emma , Jacky from France here . What I found amazing when practicing with your method is to realise the amount of air you blow after letters p ,d, t , b , c etc ... When I try to reproduce it , it sounds quite awkward to me , but it sounds like the real thing when you do it.
I had a class about countables and uncountable nouns at school and it was so confusing and frustrating. Thank God for you Emma. Now I understand this subject. Thank you very much. You are awesome!
That makes me so happy to hear Luana! 🙌
Definitely, one of the most professional English courses on CZcams!

Just stay a little close to my daughter! Nara, my older daughter, is a dentist and works there in Melbourne with other Brazilian dentists. And at the moment, I'm retired. I worked for 35 years in the Brazilian Air Force and now I have all the free time to travel around the world. This year, during the three months that I will be staying in Melbourne, I also intend to go to New Zealand and also to know some other cities of the Australian Coast. A big hug for you Emma and thank you so much for your attention.

I've come to know that today that you don't know how to dance but you know how to teach very well.
😂😂
thank you teacher. I'm watching your video right now right here my home.
Thanks for the explanation. In my native language (Brazilian Portuguese), the words "furniture", "information", "advice", "bread", "equipment" are both countable and uncountable. But I noticed you said (9:23): "There's a couple more lessons in this playlist". I've seen a lot of people using "there's + a plural noun". In this specific case, did you use "there's" (NOT, there are) informally, just to make the pronunciation easier?
Hi, I hope your lesson help me with my English, because I am really bad. You have great information. Thanks a lot of.
