    Is it actually safe to disassemble an x-ray machine?

      I would say absolutely safe. There was no power going to the unit. It hadn't been used in months, so it would have lost all residual charge, and the x-ray head itself wasn't with the unit when I collected it.

      Aside from the danger of dropping heavy bits onto your toes there is not any additional risk because it was used to produce X-rays.
      The biggest risk from any old 'oil' filled transformer, X-ray head or capacitor is the possibility of PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyl) containing insulating 'oil' from equipment made before 2001. Since 1976 it has been rare to use it but was still found in some countries but may have a label to indicate if it contains PCB or not. Check local disposal guidelines for mineral transformer oil or PCB containing 'oil'.
      The risks from the actual X-ray tubes (which was not included in this haul) is the danger of vacuum implosion from impact and from low energy/dental tubes the danger of particulates if grinding the beryllium X-ray exit window.
      There is no radiation danger at all from X-ray tubes when they are switched off and radiation treatment machines that use radio isotopes have lots of radiation trefoil warning labels and typically have to be returned to the manufacturer for disposal.
