  • (mrtrailer.com/genysale.htm) Continuing testing of my 2018 Ford F150 XLT project truck. Max towing is 12,800 lbs trailer, 1677 lbs payload. Testing with our new test trailer, Iron Bull deck-over dump trailer. Even deducting as it says in the owner's manual for 2% per thousand feet less gross combined weight.

Great job on this video sir! I've been looking for quite a while for someone to do a "Max Tow" test on this specific truck (I have the exact same) . You nailed it. Best towing 1/2 ton I have ever owned. Be safe and thanks for your incredibly informative videos and work!

I now have a F150 3.5L 4x4 EcoBoost 6.5’ bed with the Max Tow pkg. I will be towing a 7000 lb travel trailer through the Rockies to Vancouver BC. Towing with my 2017 F150, 3.5, 10 speed in June 2020 from Moab through the mountains to Colorado Springs towing 6000 lb travel trailer I always had the power but the heat gauge would occasionally start showing numbers at 224 degrees F and above but never overheated. I liked that it gave me this indication and I would avoid over throttling it when it appeared. The transmission is as impressive as the motor. Never once felt like i was nearing the edge of the control envelope. Did a similar trip towing with 2009 F150 with 5.4, 6 speed and creeped up a few mountains and nearly overheated it. I will say though, towing with the 5.4 the mileage was better by about 2 mpg.

@@boostedsiggy1175 Take into consideration that a travel trailer is a big box. There is a lot of air resistance. My opinion on trailers is reduce the weight (if approaching max weight) if you have a box trailer. Open trailers are more aerodynamic. The air resistance is no joke at speed. Watch out with cross winds, too. They will challenge the best of us. Maybe someone good with math could calculate it out.

I have a 2018 Eco boost with 2.7 turbo. Book says 11300, talked with dealer and they recommended hold at 9000. I tow a 35 foot @ 8154 lbs, up and down Cajon Pass in Socal, up the coast pulling 7% grades and not had any issues with it. Sway control works great, and on heavy pulls up the mountain, 9 to 11 MPG. In rolling hills at highway speed 12-14 MPG. Without trailer, 17-20 with my best MPG at 25.3. My partner has a Dodge 1500 with an Outback travel trailer, 9230 lbs, has no problem but has got the v-8 in it.

    • @ciphercode2298
      @ciphercode2298 Před 3 lety +1

Maximum tow capacity for the 2.7 for that year is 9k#,and that has to be a very particular setup. Turbos pull better at higher elevations because naturally aspirated engines struggle at high altitudes. Turbos dont suffer that kind of problem. That dodge will certainly pull that load, but I bet if he ever pulled that same load with a 3.5 EcoBoost he'd be ready to trade up. If you pull that big boat regularly consider getting some sumo springs to help mitigate bouncing and sagging. Mr Truck did a video on them too.

Great Video! Please be safe Mr. Truck. Take note the 12,800 pound tow rating is for the 2wd model with the 5.5ft bed. The 4x4 model has that weight reduced by additional 400 lbs making the max tow weight on a short bed 4x4 SCrew 12,400 pounds. Plus that reduction for altitude that I don't need to worry about on the east coast.
That truck pulls like a bull. I have to say I am amazed by the capability of my MaxTow/FX4 F150 and the fact that it does not even feel half ton of weight in the bed during acceleration (it does impact braking and handling) or when I am pulling less than 5K pounds.

Drop an aftermarket intercooler on there to keep the IAT's down. The turbos have to spin faster and work harder to get to the commanded boost. This will bring them out of their efficiency range and start making the charged air hotter in higher altitude. An aftermarket I/C will keep in the IAT's cooler especially during longer hard runs at altitude.

They look very handy and a good deal for the money. I live in West Virginia and though we dont have the long grades you do,we do have quite a few 7 and 8% grades and it's mostly 2 lane back country roads. Kent, it isn’t 2% of your altitude you need to lose, its 2% of your GCW! If your trailer is #12800, and your truck is about #5500 with you and fuel, that’s #18,300 pounds combined. 2% of that is #366 pounds per 1000 feet starting at 1000 feet. 8000 feet is 7000 feet above 1000 feet, so, you need to reduce your gross combined weight 7 x 366, or #2562 pounds. Not #160 pounds. That’s nothing. That’s not going to compensate for the lack of air density at 8000 feet. You should talk to Jason at engineering explained before making videos like these.

Show me the studies proving Ford estimations? I would love to see the actual data comparing the temperature gradient in controlled environment studies. The general rule of thumb is loss of 3.5% power every 1000 feet w/ respect to variables. Your statement felt like electrons will actually freeze if electricity is passed through absolute zero and can be captured. It sounds very realistic, but we need data to prove it.

The truck compensates for altitude. I don't see any reason capacity would be reduced. Horsepower is not reduced. Braking power is not reduced. There is some turbo lag, but that's it. The amount of oxygen in the engine is the same at sea level up to around 10,000 feet, when the turbos run out of headroom.

Not sure about that particular engine, but a turbocharged direct and indirect injected engine should start off in DIRECT injection and supplement it with INDIRECT. Direct injection is good for efficiency but the phase change from indirect further cools the intake charge, reducing detonation, as well as providing better mixtures and power under boost.
Also I wouldn't be surprised if the reduced GCW has to do more with BRAKING, thinner air potentially cools the brakes less effectively. Negligible power difference when under boost in a turbocharged application such as this. Just my .02, good video.

Good Video, but here is something when people are towing that needs to be considered. Wind Resistance. on the flat bed, you have significantly less wind resistance than if you were towing a travel trailer. I would like you to consider showing the difference of pulling say a 11,000 pound flat bed and a 11,000 pound travel trailer. Would like to have you discuss the difference in feel. I hate seeing people pull the very large travel trailer going down the road with this 1/2 series trucks in windy conditions and seeing them fight the truck. See, the effects of the air on the trailers is something you guys never discuss and I feel it is something that needs to be addressed since so many travel trailer accidents are caused by wind or air coming off a semi.

I would love to see what you come up with. The side and head winds on a travel trailer being towed with an F150 or other 1/2 ton series trucks does need to be discussed. I would think the decease on GCVWR would be for safety, i.e. to be able to keep up with traffic and merging. The frame and transmission aft capacity obviously can't change. The air is thinner so may not cool transmission as well, however the higher altitude is cooler by the adiabatic lapse rate so an even trade. Engine power will definitely decrease hence the safety concern. But then an engine producing less power is obviously not under as much stress as one at full power.

I think you've made a big math error? 2% is 0.02... Multiply the derating factor times the GCVWR times the peak elevation in thousands. That reduces the GCVWR by 0.02 * 18,200 * 8 = 2912 lbs. The new max GCVWR is 18200 - 2912 = 15288 lbs.
People grouse about the GCVWR elevation adjustment approach Ford is applying... But if they didn't do that you'd have less capability when at lower elevation. So, you have to think about it a bit, but you get to haul more if you aren't going over any high country.

Great video. I just subscribed. I pull an 8,000 pound TT in the Colorado mountains with my 2001 GMC Sierra 5.3L. It does surprisingly well until I get up near those 11,000 ft passes. Then I am maxed out in 1st gear (4 speed). I have been trying to decide whether to get a 3/4 ton but the emissions aren't very dependable on the Duramax and the 6.0 just won't be much better than my old GMC at 11,000.feet. I feel I need a turbo in the mountains, so I am considering the 3.5 Eco. or putting a turbo on a 6.0L 2500. This video has been very helpful because I really wanted an exhaust brake, but it sounds like your grade braking is pretty good. I also love that you can get a 10 speed about 2 years earlier in the Ford than in a GMC. The 36-gallon tank is also a plus. Anybody tried adding an aftermarket turbo on a 6.0L?
Also, I have the Sumo springs and I love them. Ride feels much more secure when pulling my trailer. Squat is reduced considerably and has a great feel when towing. They are trouble free. Mine don't come into effect until squat is about 3/4 of an inch, so my ride is still good when empty. Highly recommend.

I'm looking to tow a 37' fifth wheel that's around 10,500 lbs loaded. According to my calculations, I should be within payload and just slightly under max for fifth wheel towing. I've got roadmaster active suspension on the rear and will likely run an Andersen goosneck hitch on e rated tires. Won't be towing with any liquids in the rig.
In your opinion, do you think my 2021 F150 with 6.5' bed handle the length and weight ok? 3.5L with 3.55 gears.
We're going to be full timing, but in 3 to 4 month increments. So not towing every week.

Would you tow a 40' gooseneck at 12k lbs 2000 miles

How a longer heavier bed allows more towing for the same setup is beyond my comprehension. It’s should be the opposite.

It's about expanding the trailer tongue weight or a larger weight

Would you feel confident in that truck towing that much weight coast to coast..

Having driven fuel oil trucks for a good portion of my life I am used to carrying liquids. Oil trucks have baffles to slow the sloshing down. (Some tank mfg are better than others) So with the absence of baffles why wouldn't you fill the forward 2 tanks to the brim. (no space). Then use the last tank to get the desired weight. Instead of having all the tanks sloshing you only have one!!

I was thinking the rear tank at half empty would slosh too much.

@@MrTruckTV could try it. Sounds better in words than 3 sloshing.

🤔 maybe just reach the desired weight with some Stone in the dump trailer?

What if fore and aft totes were maxed out and middle was the one sloshing? Maybe the two full ones bookending the middle would mitigate some of the effect?

  • @totallynotawerewolf2936

The 2 % thing a little more research should not be applied to the turbo or max tow package it’s from the old rating not the new one it’s a ford ploy to optimize performance numbers gm and ram don’t do this
