- Emma Watson is the CEO and Founder of South Coast Villas based in White House Jamaica. I had the pleasure of sitting down with Emma to discuss how she started her business in the middle of a global pandemic and how she was able to find early success. Emma is a young, smart, driven young woman that shared a lot of value and insight on her entrepreneurial luxury real estate venture. Her properties are absolutely gorgeous. I had the pleasure of experiencing one of her villas when I stayed at Turtle's Nest Villa located in Treasure Beach which is where we did this interview. I hope you enjoy this convo as much as I did. For all the Jamaicans living in Jamaica. The statement made at 12:44 needs to be understood in the context that this is a woman that had capital to start her business. So, that statement is a good pitch for the audience that this channel is attending to. For those of us that understand the struggles that we go through, this statement needs to be tempered. Real Estate business is easier when you own the properties but owning properties for a Jamaican earning a Jamaican salary is not easy.
I think she also missed the point of the question when he asked her if she’d experienced any resistance being a woman starting a business in Ja. I think she overlooked so many things probably because she doesn’t understand her privilege as a light-skinned American woman and the clout/capital that comes with that in a country like Jamaica. I feel like we can pretend colorism isn’t a thing there and we can pretend that being American or being perceived as American means nothing. I feel like that is also important to talk about when starting a business there. Also, she doesn’t own any of these properties. She manages them. And to be honest, this is something I’ve considered doing in Jamaica with my sister (which is neither here nor there, lol). Owning developed property/real estate in Jamaica is expensive/difficult and definitely even more difficult as a Jamaican earning Jamaican dollars in Jamaica. Thank you for seeing that and expressing it.

Throp, I like the video a lot & Ms. Watson's success story is truly inspiring but I feel one very important ingredient is missing, especially for those who desire similar success. We need to hear details about startup capital for such businesses. We are aware that maybe the details may be too personal. But potential business owners would love all the advice they can get when it comes to actually FUNDING their dreams. Still a nice interview though. South Coast Villas is now on MY radar. Greetings. Thank you for asking for clarification Ranaldo. I felt as though I was in high school trying to solve advanced calculus. Sorry I'm having a good laugh at myself for trying to fathom where on earth this young lady amassed so much wealth to be able to go snatching up what looks like US$1M properties in Jamaica!!
Nice, I just watched this on your live a few hours ago. I will be coming back in the near future too to run Airbnb with one of my houses.
I have a 3 bedroom one that's rented right now and building a duplex behind it. When I move back I'll run Airbnb with the 2 bedroom side and stay in the studio side. Eventually I'll make the duplex into a 2 floor house and I might turn the 3 bedroom rented one into Airbnb also.
My property is on the north coast in St. Mary, close to Golden Eye and not far from Ocho Rios as well. So you see, Airbnb is doable there because I'm righr in the tourist area. So you're in Treasure Beach, St. Elizabeth, Throp, and that young lady's properties are in Westmoreland?
Sounds like you have a solid plan. Seems super smart how you're setting up your properties.

@@lisamariechinking6079 it helps when you already own the property while you are abroad. It could be a bit more challenging when you move back without owning anything there and then decide to buy land and build a house on it. Not impossible, but a bit more challenging because then you have to find a place to stay while you go through the hassle of looking for land to buy and then the another hassle of building a structure on it.
My advice is, if you're overseas, make some trips home to buy and build and don't go home until everything is completed, or almost completed.
@@Throp yes Throp, Airbnb will pick back up when this pandemic subsides.
I like what Emma said, that you're better off in Jamaica earning USD than in America earning USD. I already knew that, that is why I'm considering Airbnb with the new duplex and even converting the existing rented house to Airbnb after a while, when I move back. That way I can earn in USD from all of them.
I'm living in Florida right now, but will come home when I get everything ready.
