    Have both the 'Ace Pro' and the 'Osmo Action 4' and have to say that I prefer the image all-round from the Osmo. When it gets dark I usually film with a small spot light for the content that I create anyway. However I have found that when I do not use any of the HDR settings on the Ace Pro I get bad pulsing in the corners and weird glowing effects. Also feel the Osmo has far better colours more so with the new 10bit Natural setting update. The Ace also seems to have too much artificial compensation going on and maybe can be removed or toned down in a firmware update. Have sent it back as for myself I wasn't that impressed with the footage it produces. Oh and yes I do pixel peep :). Atb for Xmas and 2024.

    Interesting take on the Ace Pro. As a long-time user of the OA 4(i've also tried the ace pro), I've been particularly impressed with its quick response time and efficient battery management. These features have been a beneficial for me on long shoots. Looking forward to your long-term review of Ace Pro to see what else you discover, thanks!

    I got the ace pro as well. I haven’t played with it too much but when I have it has been a much more enjoyable experience. Hand gestures with the flip up screen is pretty great. And that clarity zoom is awesome. The app seems great. Wish it didn’t use cellular data to make the AI videos, because currently im in a spot that has no cellphone service and with wifi that’s not an option. Overall I’m happy with it.
    Great review Stewart!

      I watched many reviews of the ace pro and thinking if I should buy it but someone reviewed it and said it has terrible delay when filming with stability sensor on. How does the camera feel? I would probably use it for daily tasks but also biking snowboarding etc.

      @@33.Aspectthe delay is just in the flip-up monitor. There isn’t any delay in the actual recorded file. In other words, if you quickly raise your hand, the monitor has a slight lag. We’re talking about a very slight lag.

    So you mentioned the ace pro isn't log footage and yet a flat color profile , so how would I color grade ace pro footage in Final Cut ect? Should I apply luts as the standard version of the lut or log version of the lut? Is there an initial step before adding luts to flat ace pro footage ? Or should I just shoot in standard or vivid and add luts with that footage opposed to using flat? Which gives the best quality color profile on the camera for me to later color grade/ correct and add luts ? Loving your content lately especially the ace pro goods!

    Many people are straight up comparing the Ace Pro with other cameras versus taking it for what it is. As you said, I'd rather see something a bit different and innovative than just another choice of the same thing. The low light capabilities are what I'd get this for. Having to use a gimbal is a pain in many situations.

  • @JRBjornsonVideos
    @JRBjornsonVideos Před 5 měsíci +27

    I'm really impressed with the Insta360 Ace Pro action camera, especially its low-light capabilities, which are making me seriously consider purchasing it. Currently, I'm using the DJI Action 3, and while it meets most of my needs, its performance in low-light environments like bars or stand-up comedy venues isn't ideal for recording my comedy sets. I'm hoping the Insta360 Ace Pro will be the perfect upgrade and become my go-to camera for daily use and recording my stand-up performances at various local venues. Thanks so much for this informative video - you've definitely convinced me about the Insta360 Ace Pro's potential. Now, I just need to start saving up for it. Fingers crossed, maybe the price will drop by the time I've saved enough, perhaps in a year's time!

    I like that Insta360 re-thought what an Action should be and gave us something a little different from the likes of GoPro and DJI. But I'm not much a low-light or night shooter, so this cameras biggest selling point is way down on my priority list. The DLOG-M profile and 10 bit color features of Action 4 are much more important to me. And with the recent firmware upgrade to allow the use of the wireless Mic 2 this really has become my goto action cam. Great review Stewart, you really covered everything. Thanks for sharing, and Happy Holidays.

    I'm looking to get a camera for some adventures on holiday while also film volleyball matches indoor. Those matches can last up to 2/2,5 hours. I have read that the Ace Pro will film longer in 4k30fps. But I am not sure as other sites say otherwise. I can understand that filming in 4k doesn't allow 2 hours recording anyways. But maybe 2.7k does? Is the Ace Pro better for indoor filming anyways? You also said cropping/zooming on ace pro at 4k doesn't lose the quality. Can you also do that on 2.7k?

    I’m hovering on the fence between the DJI and the Ace Pro at the moment. I have two GoPro’s (9 and 10 )which I have a love hate relationship with, the App is next to useless and the amount of issues with lost broken files, just creates so much extra work for me. I was wondering how dependant the Ace Pro and DJI Action are on the app software, in my head I would prefer that files can be directly uploaded from the SD card to my editing software, without adding an extra process with a bespoke app This causes too many issues with time and date sequences not matching the original footage, after an eight day cycling trip that causes chaos.

    Thanks for the review. What about pulsating background in low light scenarios? Did you experience any of that? Another reviewer mentioned that as a huge downside in his video titled "Discover the Truth About Insta360 Ace Pro: Brutally Honest Review". I love this camera's low light performance premise, but that gave me some doubts.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  Před 5 měsíci +3

      Interesting. Just looked at the video you mentioned. I didn't experience any of that and the reason could be that 99.9% of the footage was shot with manual camera settings. Even if I switched the shutter to auto from time to time, I would lock the ISO and WB. I also didn't actually use PureVideo that much because whilst it is good for beginners, you can get equal results shooting full manual. This camera's 'trick' at the end of the day is the light gathering capability of the sensor. PureVideo is just a neat way of packaging that up into an auto mode. It's tough getting a clear sense of what's going on from YT videos because you need to know EXACTLY what settings are being used. If that clip was PureVideo with auto exposure and auto WB, that might explain it. Doesn't justify it though because these cameras still need to be easy to use for newcomers. All that being said, I wouldn't read too much into that. If it's a 'glitch' I'm sure it would be sorted with a firmware update but like I say, manual settings is the way to go for these cameras - especially in low light.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  Před 5 měsíci

      Hey! No sign of it in the 'held for review' list I'm afraid. Another possible cause could be the face metering in auto exposure. With this setting on, the camera prioritises getting the correct exposure on the face and as a consequence, the rest of the image will inevitably be adjusted to make this happen.

    • @PaulVoorberg
      @PaulVoorberg Před 5 měsíci

      @@DroneFilmGuide Ah I see, yeah that would make sense. To elaborate again on my situation: I do street interviews. When someone agrees to an interview I do it right away on the spot, often not even adjusting to find the best lighting position (though I probably should). But my point is: every shot is taken in a different location, with a different lighting situation. So I have to rely on auto. I may just buy the camera and try it at some point, to see if it works out for that scenario. I do like the low light premise a lot, as with my GoPro even during cloudy dark days or dusk it can sometimes be noisy, and I can totally forget about shooting when it's dark with it.

      @DroneFilmGuide  Před 5 měsíci

      From past tests looking at mechanical stabilisation (gimbal) vs electronic stabilisation (action cameras), electronic stabilisation cannot be beaten for extreme vibration and shake. For moderate scenarios a gimbal does amazingly so it depends on your use case. The advantage of mechanical stabilisation is you can use ND filters to get motion blur where as EIS requires no motion blur so the software can realign the frames.

    Nice video, with interesting comparisons. Well done! @timestamp 7:40 you say that the low light gathering quality remains the same between 1x and 2x. That's absolutely not true. If you crop a sensor (physically) the ISO value in number, say ISO 100, stays the same but it gets noisier because of it's decreased pixel size. Compare micro-four-thirds to full-frame from a logical point of view. ISO 6400 becomes be pretty bad on mft compared to full frame.

      Hey! Think you misheard. I said the light gathering capability of the Ace Pro on 2x is similar to that of the Action 4 on 1x. When you compare the Ace Pro's 1x and 2x, you're absolutely right, you need a much slower shutter to compensate for it being a single pixel mode.

    I think you made a mistake in your review at 7:00 . You said the "Ace gets a ton more light than Action 4" but the higher shutter speed means the light exposure is lower, not higher. Actually the Ace Pro at 1/1250 takes almost half as light as the Action 4 at 1/640. Now the question is how come the image is equally bright at those settings, and the answer can be either lower aperture, higher ISO (which wasn't the case, both were at ISO 100) or it could be a in-camera applied gain ie. a value multiplier, or both of those.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Possible. I did side-by-side 4K 50 (non-HDR) and 4K 25 (HDR) and the results were pretty similar. In fairness, I do have quite pink/red skin so any skin tone 'issues' are accentuated with me.

      @@DroneFilmGuide i tried one in the store. There was something off but the 8bit file was not hard to correct. I felt though that it would be a hassle to correct and then fade in-out adjustment layers to get changing scenarios right.
      I have an osmo action 4. I felt that the wb sucked but I was covering the color sensor in the front with a filter thread I stuck on with a rubber band 😅. Once i let go of the nd filter and removed the rubber band filter thread, the auto WB became so reliable. There's a little bit of weirdness for a short amount of time when scenes change but it adapts QUICK.

    • @DroneFilmGuide
      @DroneFilmGuide  Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yes. It depends entirely on how dark the shot it. All cameras produce noise in low light scenarios so much as the Ace Pro is better than other action cameras, there's still a limit on what it can achive.

    No competition. The Ace Pro's low-light performance is on another level! It picks up details like a pro, leaving my Hero 12 in the dust. The colors are vibrant and true to life. If you're serious about your footage, the Ace Pro is the way to go.

  • @GrumpyGoat
    @GrumpyGoat Před 2 měsíci

    Excellent commentary and review of the Ace Pro.
    I like how the apparently popular commentary regarding close-up sharpness is put into perspective, and how you remind the viewer of the intended mission of this camera. If one is a photographer, it is common knowledge that there is no one lens that will deliver sharpness at all distances from the lens - that is why there are interchangeable lens "real cameras" in existence. The common users these days apparently have insufficient appreciation of optics hence the comments.
    I just got mine as an everyday carry / primarily motovlogging camera. My other everyday carry is my iPhone 13 Pro which suits my photo / video needs, and which is a better close-up / face focused camera than the Action Pro - I know that at the outset. On the other hand, the Action Pro works better on my helmet and as an action camera - go figure. Better yet, it doesn't appear to freeze as my Hero 11 Black occasionally does, and thanks to the quick-release mount I should not have any drama to change batteries when needed as I do with my helmet-mounted Hero 11 Black in its Media Mod! These 2 issues are primary reasons for the likely switch!
    Thanks again for the balanced vid.

    That motion blur does look nice. And, thanks for the review, I find it different from other channels 👍 As a travel blogger, I'd still stick to my Action 4, so far I've found the size is more compact and the rugged design are just perfect for on-the-go filming. It's been reliable so far, survived quite a few drops in my experience, which is dope for clumsy ppl like me.

    "If" I had to buy an action cam right now, this would be the one I'd buy. Once we have this form factor with a real true 1" then I'll be all aboard. But GoPro will never be an option for me since I don't enjoy the pain from banging my head against a wall every time the thing locks up! GoPro has been permanently BANNED from my existence! We still need at least 60 fps in 8K, otherwise it's not usable as an action cam for me. I see at the speed of sight, I need a camera that can truly keep up, 120 would be better but 60 is a minimum. But I do like where this thing is headed, just waiting on my minimum requirements to be met, then I'll 'smash' that buy button.
    I have not looked because I'm not buying, but is there a real Windows desktop program available for this or only gimmicky Android/Apple smart phone programs? Those little baby screens I can't see let alone work on! I do all my work on a Windows desktop, so naturally I need a program that works were I do. I really liked your multi-part review on this, and I would love to just sit down to get into a 45 min+ full length version of everything in one shot. But maybe that's just me. Cheers 🍻

    Sound is _still_ terrible. I certainly don't see a need to upgrade or charge over from my GoPro. While I use my Insta360 360 cam all of the time, Insta360 regular cams simply can't complete. Kudos for trying but there sound is just horrible. Battery and quick access cases are far better then GoPro but it's the sound that just kills the whole deal. External mic you say? Should not be needed to fix the sound and also, Insta360 has a _terrible_ history of not supporting an external mics.

    Finally a review that mentions the true short comings of the DJI Action4. I own a DJI Action 4 & one of the reasons I rarely use this camera is the amount of cropping needed to get images that are a more ‘real’ FOV. I find the action4 is too wide and subjects too far. Such a shame as the camera is a great device and easy to use.

    Please don`t spread misinformation, electronic stabilization doesn`t need high shutter speed, it doesn`t care about shutter speed at all, because it uses accelerometer data to stabilize video. The problem is with optical motion blur, witch will make fast moving video look blurry. Manufacturers, like GoPro, choses to lover stabilization amount and at some point disables it completely in these situations, but it doesn`t mean the video can`t be electronically stabilized. You can take the shakiest GoPro footage taken using 1/30 shutter and perfectly stabilize it in post production (using video embedded accelerometer data ), another question will be, will you like the result..
