Why you should learn "Every Time I Die" riffs on guitar!

- This is a new concept video where I explore why you should learn guitar riffs by the band Every Time I Die. I go into a few songs that I like and show how they are played as well as talking about the band and their music.
What do you think of this kind of video? Which band should I cover if I do more of these videos?
Please consider subscribing :) - Hudba
Every Time I Die has more cool riffs in a single song than most of the bands in their whole carrier.
endless insanely good riffs.. the ideas these guys have in their heads 🤯
Career even!
It helped that jordan had a riff carrier bag
I love how their rhythm sections are basically just layered leads.
I've always felt like that I also like he is legends riffs but older albums. I finally learned a couple Etid songs tho. An I got to saw the timing on a couple others scrambled me a bit
I genuinely feel so bad for anyone who is just now finding out about ETID for the first time and will never get to see them live.
Their concerts were game changing.
RIP.
Moved from Africa to the US because it meant I would get to see them... then shit hit the fan
I was thinking that same thing around when it happened.
I've seen them on almost every tour & just found out from this video that they broke up. Sadness
Don’t remind me! I had tickets to their show to finally see them and they broke up a week before! I was so pissed!
I’m lucky enough to have grown up about an hour from Buffalo, got to see them a few times at home during Christmas in the mid 2000s. Fantastic show every time.
Duuuuude your tone is spot on
Thank you man!!
For real… it’s got an amazing grind to it
Jordan and Andy are riff wizards
Absolutely agree!
Would love a part 2! Especially if you include some songs from Low Teens, which is one of my favorite albums of the past 10 years! Traveled to Germany to see them with Converge, an amazing show!
Working on it ;)
@@geirisk8Some of those Low Teens riffs are pretty hectic.
Suggestion for the second installment - place a metronome behind the riff so those unfamiliar can follow the timing.
Your playing is so on point. The rhythms and picking patterns can get really intricate and confusing and you totally nail it. I’ve been a huge ETIDiot since Hot Damn! and really appreciate when people recognize them as more than just a sick hardcore band and see the absolute riff factory that Andy and Jordan were.
Favorite band of all time. I have tattoos dedicated to them lol. You doing this video was not only a badass throwback, but also a wonderful tribute to the dearly departed. Much love
Great video and format! ETID is one of my favourite bands of all time as well (I couldn't pick a definitive favourite), and I do agree learning their stuff is great for guitarists. Also, I love how you included Revival Mode because the main riff is very "unusual" harmonically speaking and it can really help guitarists open their mind when it comes to writing interesting (yet catchy) riffs.
Awesome man, would love to see a part 2! ETID has had so many legendary riffs that are just incredibly fun and energetic. Gloom and How it Gets That Way, Kill the Music, The Low Road Has No Exits, I Been Gone a Long Time, El Dorado, All This and War, and Holy Book of Dilemma and Business Casualty are probably some of my favorite.
Great video! Would love to see a Part 2, especially for songs where they broadened their use of tunings (Drop A in particular), or if you have thoughts on why a song is in one particular tuning vs another. Also, it would be fun to see you break down/explain a song between Jordan and Andy's parts - showing how they fit together into a cohesive song.
I didn't even know they used drop A ever damn my favs are all in drop d like usual though. What album did they go that low in?
@@El.Sasquatcho69 I guess it's not Drop A in the traditional sense, but AADGBE with the sixth string tuned down an octave. Here is a playlist I have for most of the ETID songs I noted in that tuning, plus a few other artists who have used it (Thrice, etc.): czcams.com/play/PLza_vYSZyd3jvWi3_Ex1c8M3YOdRRq51x.html&si=y-WUHwnEyva2AU-K
Can’t wait to see more videos like this. Your playing is helping me a ton. Idk if you know anything by The Chariot. But that would be sick.
I really like the idea of your videos. And I agree if you want to get to a new level-studying these and other bands riffs will make you better with practice. I spent an entire summer in my 20’s learning EVERYTHING on Norma Jean’s “O’god the Aftermath” by ear and I’ve watched my progress glow from there.
Sorry i took so long to find this channel, but im glad i finally did. Hard sub and notifications for the etid content.
Hot Damn is one of my favourite album of all time. Definitely favourite of that genre.
Didn’t know I needed this video. Great showcase of how skilled jordan and Andy are.. thank. I miss this band dearly.. thank you very much
Yes, they are insanely skilled dudes, both as writers and just as players. Some riffs they've written are genuinely difficult to play!
Love ETID, always struggled with the riffage. Very interesting, unique, and counterintuitive in a cool way.
Great video man! Come on give us part 2
Have been listening to so much ETID lately, have attempted a few songs but didn't get very far, very nice to see a breakdown of their 'style' like this! Thanks!
Thank you for this comment, it makes me happy that I made the video and I've been wanting to make a part 2 because there's so so so much left to cover with their songs!
No We’reWolf? The last riff of that song is hands down one of their best. You’re crazy dude.
Pt. 2 is in the making ;)
You're a beast! Great video! Gonna try some of these!
Thank you! I'm honestly surprised how many people have watched this and for the feedback from people.
Great video! Defo got to agree they are great songs to learn and play, and I learned some things about their techniques I hadn't picked up myself!
I was big into metalcore as a teenager and had such a great time learning these songs and playing along in my bedroom, because of that ETID is pretty much the only metalcore band that I still follow, the creativity and experimentation they brought to the genre was just immense.
Defo do a follow up on "From Parts Unknown", that's my favourite album too, Pelican of Desert, If There's Room To Move, Idiot and El Dorado slap hard!
Also greetings from Seltjarnarnes XD
Really enjoyed this. Solid song choices, clean playing, and great guitar tone.
Thank you so much! Stay tuned for pt. 2!
Re teaching myself guitar after about 10 years and Etid is still one of my favorite bands for atleast 13 years that I can remember listening to them. This is a well done video showcasing some bad ass riffs. I’d love to see a part 2!
Aw yeah, pt. 2 is in the making!
Great video tour of thier discography! really appreciate this .
Thank you! I really wanted to demonstrate different albums since their writing changes a lot between albums, even though the core of their tone and feel is still always there.
Excellent work on this video! Every Time I Die has been my favorite band for the better part of my life. Their music is fun, lively, and as you show, features some incredibly complex and layered riffs that are deeply satisfying to pull off.
I just picked up a guitar for the first time in 10 years and ETID songs are helping me get back into the groove.
🤘🏽🤘🏽
Aw man I'm glad to hear that you've been inspired to play again! ETID are absolutely full of cool riffs and I really recommend diving into them. There's a lot to learn!
This was awesome man, thank you for doing it. I was introduced to ETID in 2002 in high school and they’ve been one of my favorite bands ever since. I’m a drummer and playing along to ETID records back then really helped my chops. Hearing Botch, Refused and ETID changed my life. Good times. 🕺🏼
Oh yeah they're more technical than you'd think. I love Botch and Refused too!
I like every time I Die and it's so good that you make such a video in good quality, thank you
Thank you for watching and listening!
This was a really concise explanation dude. ETID is one of my favourite bands of all time. I just turned 33 so gutter phenomenon i think just came out when i started getting into heavy music in high school :). Think I saw 'Kill The Music' for the first time on kerrang lol. Anyway hope you're well. i just found this vid 2 years on after listening to them.
my friends and i have always been bonded by ETID's music. it's the one band we ALL agree on. We've been to every single Tid' The Season Buffalo show, so sadly.. we saw their last performance without knowing it at the time.
ETID FOREVER .
Oh wow I wish I had been able to go to one of their Tid' The Season events. I bet it was amazing!!
Great video. I am not a guitar player myself (I sing and also play drums) but I found the part where you talk about playing the same riff on different parts of a neck extremely interesting. It is just a little detail that makes a huge difference, super cool! Wish you also did some riffs from From Parts Unknown and Low Teens.
Maybe a weird request, but I would love if you could do Dillinger Escape Plan or Vein.fm (I love how these guys come up with those filthy noises on guitars).
Awesome video, curious about that tele and it’s modifications.
I love ETID. Their riffs are really good and super fun to play. I only know one right now but learning more.
sick concept, keep it going. subbed
Thank you, I'm working on a pt. 2 and also the same idea with other bands too.
Dude.. Great Jordan/Andy tone!! Great picks, especially leatherneck🔥🔥🔥
Ps. Apocalypse now and then would've fit with your examples nicely, you asked at the end lol
Pps. Radical is my new favorite album to play..
Basically the whole album but with a habit of over playing Sly, post boredom, desperate pleasures, ataw and people verses.
I can’t believe we are all getting old! The early 2000s were a great time for music. I miss the ETID, Dillinger Escape Plan, Between the Buried and Me days. At least BTBAM released Colors II. There’s one positive.
This video rips, Good work dude
Thank you!!
ETID’s album was the best album last year.. well, maybe tied with turnstile.. that album was also fantastic. Great info on the riffs. I get the guitar parts, just wish I could match Andy hull and Keith Buckley’s emotional delivery in “thing with feathers”, gets me every time. Also, amazed at the great tone you get out of a squire tele.
Yeah I agree! Yeah I quite like the tone too and that guitar sounds good mostly because of the SD Super Distortion pickup that I put in the bridge. It's a good one!
Great video and playing, man! They are my favorite band as well, and it took me way too long to realize how fun their songs are to play. Definitely agree with what you said about many of their songs being simple, but then a lot get super tricky when it comes to the arrangement and variations. Going to have to finish the video later, because now I have to throw on one of their albums haha.
Also, if you see this, the tone is great and I’m curious what you are using.
Thank you for the comment! Yeah they do have lots of nice and easy to digest riffs that are sometimes accompanied with other really hard ones. Then there's the arrangement which can sometimes throw you off if you don't learn it.
In terms of tone I'm using a JCM800 rig either on the Axe FX Ultra or the Line 6 Helix. Can't remember which one I had at the time. Either way I always base their tone on a JCM800 platform.
Gonna do a video on it soon ;)
Nice playing dude. Super clean.
Thanks, I try my best!
this is a great and very important video!!!
Thank you! I'm glad to see all the responses so I'm doing a pt.2
Loved to see one on He is Legend , their early albums had some awesome guitar work.
I wish I could find some tabs for HIL. I Am Hollywood album is my favorite. Theres so many different guitar layers it’s a bit tricky to learn from ear
I love He Is Legend and their riffs are absolutely nasty and tasty. I'll note this down and dig into them soon!
Excellent video! Some suggestions for part II: The Sweet Life, After One Quarter of a Revolution, Apocalypse Now and Then, Underwater Bimbos From Outer Space, Post-Boredom, Things with Feathers.
I really enjoyed this curated 'way in' to the band (not heard them before) and some of their riffage for me to try out. Without your video I may never have discovered 'Hot Damn!'... Hot Damn! Many thanks!
Awesome, I'm glad I managed to get someone to check them out. There are lots of songs that may not be the most presentable for newcomers but you may ease into them later. Hope you've enjoyed exploring ETID!
Great video 👌
Probably ETID is the band with the most influence on me as an musician even if you don’t hear it that much in the stuff I do. I am still heartbroken about the breakup
Yeah I totally get you. They have influenced me so much too and I wish they could still go on but it is what it is and knowing that Andy, Jordan, Goose and Steve have plans to carry on playing, I'm just pumped to hear what they have in store for us!
Immediate thumbs up when you said etid is your favorite
Hahah thank you!
well done man!!
Thank you so much! I'm currently uploading pt.2 so stay tuned!
Thanks for this video! I think it would also be cool to have an accompanying video that shows how to get that similar tone they use, for ETID and other future bands
Yeah you're right. There's a few people asking about the tone so I'll make a separate video where I go through how I make a tone like this one!
Amazing!
Thank you!
Love etid thanks for the vid man
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
YES PLEASE PART 2 & OTHER BANDS AS WELL
Working on it ;)
They are my favorite band ever as well. This was a great video.
Thank you!!
Everytime I Die songs are great to learn because of the very weird timings and rhythms in their tunes! Hot Damn! is one of my all time favorite albums but it was a HUGE pain in the ass to learn ALL the parts to ALL the songs! ETID riffs, for the most part, aren't very difficult but the fills, breakdowns, and part changes usually take multiple listens to get the timing down!
Another band/album that I always recommend people learn songs from is Between the Buried & Me album "The Silent Circus!" It's a LOT more technical than ETID's stuff but it will absolutely help you with your playing! BTBAM has the same weird fills and rhythms and super technical parts that helped me with speed and stamina BIG TIME
PS: ETID's Romeo A Go Go, Off Broadway, and I've Been Gone A Long Time played in succession is prob the most fun you can have as a guitar player
He is legend is fun too not nearly as technical though some fun riffs
Cool vid. I started guitar in 2020, learned a few Metallica songs, a few Gojira songs, and now I've started to really want to play ETID stuff, but way out of my depth. Way different technique involved than what I learned via Met/Goj. So I wouldn't be upset if you ever did some either some tutorials on ETID songs or just a video about their general play style/skills required to practice to be able to play their songs.
Love them, regret only seeing them once. I thought I’d have more time and their last album was so ridiculously good.
I agree, last album was absolutely amazing. The band kept getting better and better. I was fortunate to have seen them once. I do recommend checking out the two bands that spawned from ETID: Many Eyes (Keith on vocals) and Better Lovers (Jordan, Goose and Steve from ETID along Greg from Dillinger and Will Putney).
Great video, great concept for a series. Earned my sub. I’ll even hit the little bell if you tell me how you got that thick bitey tone
Hahah thank you so much, I really appreciate it! About the tone, it's a Line 6 Stomp patch that I made. I'll probably make a video on it along with a few other presets so if you stay tuned, I'll give away what's going on there. It's really simple to be honest but requires a bit of tuning to get it.
Great insite to Jordan’s genius. Always good to see other like minded fans out there
Aw yeah brotha!
Great vid bud. I loved it. Maybe can you do one on ETIDs guitar tone?
Good idea, noting it down!
Always good to try and learn something that’s about 10% above your ability, you improve a lot whilst learning, whilst avoiding feeling like it’s impossible, and ETID are great for that as the difficulty is quite varied across their catalogue 👏🏻
Absolutely agree with you there. The early stuff is quite difficult, then it gets easier and then it gets harder again. There's all sorts of riffs of various difficulties to learn from them.
This was great. I grew up as a drummer and this band got me into playing guitar for fun, since their riffs were just too good.
I always wanted to try to play Hot Damn with an acoustic but my skill level won't allow it. 😂
Hope to see more by them!
Oh yeah I recommend learning more by them but honestly the Hot Damn album is a bit difficult. Gutter Phenomenon is a bit easier!
We definitely want a followup vid!
Didn't see you as ETID hardcore fan 😮 so cool! 😳🙂❤️👍
Looooove them! Been a fan since Hot Damn came out =D
Awesome jam! Sure love the tone. ETID has been an all time favourite for me, though I'm not a fan of the stuff that came after Hot Damn. To each their own.
This video is incredible. Long time etid fan and pretty terrible guitar player. Thank you for your service.
Haha thank you for the kind words! I recommend trying to learn some of their songs, they're not all too difficult. Gutter Phenomenon is the easiest album I'd say. Lots of really fun riffs all over the album!
This video is amazing and you are a legend for doing this. Where are you from, if you don't mind me asking?
Every time I die riffs? You got me right where you wanted me
(Also better lovers band is members of dillinger escape plan and etid combined if u like that kind of thing)
Aw yeah I really really like Better Lovers since I love Dillinger as well. I'm not as fond of Many Eyes but they have some cool stuff here and there.
Yes! I just wrote a comment about ETID, DEP, and BTBAM! I feel like we there are a lot of us mutual fans.
Good stuff man! Would also be cool to get straight up tutorials on how to play each riff/song. Can’t always make out everything your fingers are doing.
Good point! I'm working on a pt.2 and I'll see if I can somehow efficiently incorporate some more details into how the riffs are played.
One of our biggest influences
RIP ETID!
Same here, I've listened religiously to them since Hot Damn!
Awesome deduction of ETID riffs, so many fun, cool ones. Guess my fave song by them is Logic Of Crocodiles from their Last Night In Town album 👍👍
Thanks! I may do a part two video where I go through more riffs as there's just so so so much left to cover. It was hard to choose these ones to be perfectly honest hah!
@@geirisk8 i know, pretty sick band..they went more for a kinda noisy rock'n roll type of hardcore after Last Night. When did they broke up? Didn't know! Every band breaks up eventually but didn't know...
Do you know The Dillinger Escape Plan? Sick mathcore band, also called it quits after 20 years in 2016
"Last night in town". Theres video of Jordan relearning that song, its pretty great. Definately a classic
Same here, my dude. LoC was the first song I ever heard by them and instantly I was hooked. Then.. on my first go-round of LNIT, hearing the intro-song "Enter Without Knocking and Notify the Police", just sealed the deal. Devastated about the breakup.
@@christopherkatulka4612 oh yeah, incredible and exciting! Shocked when they broke up suddenly...always loved metalcore/ noisy, chaotic metallic hardcore 🙂
From Parts Unknown is the album that inspired me to take guitar more seriously and go into that metalcore-y direction. I owe everything to Jordan and Andy
That is such a brutal album! The tone is so different from what they were doing before. I love it! I’m glad we have Better Lovers now. It’s not quite ETID but it has flavours that I like and a lot of Jordan’s riffmanship is in there that reminds of ETID.
First time i listen ETID while i was in high school 2011, my friend share wanderlust song & info from local brand PeterSaysdenim...
They also appear in AlternativePress magazine...
They Riff so catchy and feels like a band from Guitar Hero games..
its so cowboy, rock & metal...
Then i listen to Samurai band in game Cyberpunk 2077 while 2022, they have song archangel, it reminds me ETID again 😂😂😂
Haha cool mate! I believe that some Guitar Hero or Rock Band game featured one ETID song. I can't remember exactly though.
Yessss I love this video finally my boys etid getting some love 😈🤘
Oh yeah and I'm workgin on a pt. 2 video!
What a great video! Love ETID, saw them at their very last show in Buffalo. I know you posted this a while ago, but I'm hoping you still check the comments. I've been working on a couple of their songs (gonna switch to Wanderlust, thanks!), but can't get my sound right. Could you give me some insight into your setup? Thanks!
New here. Please do more etid riffs! Espesialy newer stuff. I'm gonna try ro lern them all! 😍
Working on it right now!
Very awesome vid and great song selection. Any recommended tabs?
Thank you so much! Honestly I always go to Ultimate Guitar for tabs and in some cases I've picked up ETID songs by ear. I usually go for tabs to save time hah!
As a person from buffalo ETID is a house hold name for people who love such genres of metal and what not. Everyone who loves them in our city has a story about meeting them. I literally saw Andy at the local grocery store the other day it fuckin awesome
Oh man that's so cool!!
Nice tone bro
Thank you!
Loved this band since "The New Black" was on Guitar Hero or whatever. They got better with every album. My favorite song is Nothing Visible/Ocean Empty. Also check out The Damned Things, it's a supergroup with members from Every Time I Die, Fall Out Boy, and Anthrax.
The Damned Things is freaking awesome! Cool to know someone else has heard their stuff!
Yeah I agree, they just kept getting better. I sorta like The Damned Things. They have some cool songs but I feel like Keith needed to be just a tiny bit more aggressive in his vocals there. But I guess that's what they're going for.
I highly recommend Better Lovers which features Greg from Dillinger and Jordan, Steve and Goose from ETID as well as Will Putney. Now that's a supergroup!
Nice! You nailed every riff, also great song choice. what did you use for the tone? Excellent job all around 👏🏻
Thank you! I can't remember if I was using the Axe FX Ultra or the Line 6 Helix but either way, I always use some sort of JCM800 preset that I make.
A+
Thank you!!
LNIT and Hot Damn are lovely records
Riffs for days!
I could've easily made this into an hour long videos. I will do a part two if people like this idea.
@@geirisk8 yes, part two with some really dirty, heavy riffs in there!
I have to admit, I haven't been able to listen to ETID much since the breakup. That one hit too close as they've been a massively important band to me for the last 20 years. Every time I put on one of their albums I would get too bummed out and turn it off. Just want to thank you as I watched your video and finally put them back on and have been blasting it since. I guess I should be happy that we still have such an incredible catalog of music from them. Riff kings forever.
Hey sorry for such a late reply but I'm glad that I inspired you to take a positive spin on it and just keep appreciating what they've done through the years. The breakup was gutting but luckily we have a ton of serisouly good music that will live on forever!
QOTSA has some riffs as well, I agree with this a lot
Oh yeah they have tasty riffs for sure!
One of my favorite bands. From Buffalo, NY. Definitely do some of The Bronx music. They are from LA. Thanks
Yeah I remember The Bronx. You ever listen to One Dead Three Wounded. They are like every time I die mixed with darkest hour.
@@ShootYourRadio No I haven't, I'll check them out. Thanks !! 🤘🤘🤘
@@KevinWalsh-km3bh for sure bro. Cheers from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia.
@@ShootYourRadio from Charlotte
@@KevinWalsh-km3bh if you have any recommendations. I'm down for some.haha.
Awesome playing there! I'm impressed by the guitar, is that a squier Affinity Tele?
Yep it is! I've modified it a bit and done a proper setup so it plays really well and sounds great with that SD Super Distortion pickup ;)
I love your guitar. What type of pickups is in it?
Had an ear worm after work and I had to learn on guitar. It was “kill the music.” Stumbled here. Keep it up!
Kill The Music is such a killer song!
Giving away secrets! 🤘🏼
That band rules. It really bummed me out to see them go.
Agreed! I recommend checking out Many Eyes and Better Lovers that spawned from ETID. It's not the same but at least we get to enjoy some ETID flavours here and there in the music.
Love every time I die a lot
Same!
Love the Butcher
Andy!
Hey man - how do you nail the tone so well?
Came from your vocal cover
Love your tone in this video, whats your signal chain?
Oh man honestly I can't remember 100% but when I made this I believe I had either the Line 6 Helix or the old Fractal Axe FX Ultra. Either way when I go for ETID tones they are always based on a JCM800 type rig.
I am working on a Pt. 2 video and I may go a little into the tone there. If not then, I'll make a video on the ETID tone and demonstrate how I get there. Stay tuned!
Hellow! Play list please...thanks you bro! 👍👋
Yes part 2
Working on it ;)
Do you have a video where you detail this guitar??? What pickups you’re using etc. it sounds great
You know whart, I thought I had made a video before but apparently I never did. I recently sold the guitar so I'm afraid I can't make that video, at least not properly.
It is a squier affinity telecaster where I replaced the hardware in black and added locking tuners and I swapped out the bridge pickup for SD Super Distortion pickups. They are really great!
@@geirisk8 thanks! I might do the same to my tele. Great vid, cheers!
Just wondering, whats your setup? Really like the tone you got, especially interested in the DiMarzio pickup
At the time I had either the Axe FX Ultra or the Line 6 Helix but this tones is definitely based on a TS9 into a JCM800 type rig. I will make a video on this soon!
What distortion pedal are you using in this if any?
Look at the Tele rawk 🙂 I see you have new studio monitors Asgeir, why no more Adams? Damn that Tele just sounds awesome. Must be the none more black vibe ha. Stock bridge pu?
Yeah you know when the Kali LP6 (and LP8) were introduced I was so intrigued by them being more like classic monitors while the Adams are so hifi and crispy. Don't get me wrong, they are really good but I honestly prefer the Kali's.
The tele is quite alright and I spent a lot of time making it better and the best upgrade was to put the Seymour Duncan Super Distortion pickup in the bridge. It's great!
