The dialogue makes no sense... "When YOU look at me what do YOU see? Nothing, the answer is nothing, I have no feelings about YOU one way or the other." Asks him a question about himself them makes the answer about Robert completely disregarding the question. The only way it would make sense is if he was answering for Robert, but then he's just shitting on himself.

Not once did a waiter appear at their table with a puzzled look on his face and a spare salmon pie and ask if Teddy ordered this. Not once did a waiter try to upsell another bottle of wine, and not once did a flower seller come and pester them about buying a bunch to take home. Hollywood, sheesh.

The subtlety of Marton Csokas (Nickolai) at 5:38 to turn that slight grin into a straight face is superb acting. Something so minor, yet conveys to audiences that the character now fully realizes the threat he faces while locked in that intense stare down. Phenomenal scene by both!
Don't forget that he was clenching to his table the whole time. Only when the rival left did he get to release that tension and have a sip of his very expensive drink.
Marton Csokas went toe to toe with Denzel and held his ground. I thought he did an awesome job in this movie. What an awesome villain!
Like they say in sports "There's certain things you can't teach an athlete". I believe the same when it comes to performers. The subtleties in acting, those are natural shits imo

The fact that he knew about Nikolais childhood made Robert instantly intimidate him. I love this scene so much. It shows just how calculating Robert McCalls character really is. I genuinely can't see any other actor playing Robert McCall other than Denzel Washington. He deserved an Oscar for this performance

@@GranPuba That's the impression that I got. I assumed McCall was almost "flexing" and saying "I know who you are and what kind of person you are". For a man who tries to lay low, it would be a bit jarring for this random man to know about your past like that. It just shows how skilled McCall is. Nicolai did the same thing when showing up at McCalls apartment earlier in the movie. I'm not sure but that was just my assumption.

The way he just places the glasses on the table and delivers that line is superb. This could have been a generic action movie but the performances of both these men takes it to a different level.
They grabbed some top notch actors. Absolutely solid performances. Denzel is one of my favorite actors. His Man on Fire movie was damn good too.

The part of "Thank you" and "You're welcome" stood out to me. I think Nikolai's "thank you" is being sarcastic, while John's "thank you" seems like courtesy.
@@brbailey YES! I knew it felt "weird" or kinda "off kilter" to me. I couldn't quite put my finger on it. But you hit it for me. Teddy being sarcastic in contrast to John's courtesy is what I've been sensing. It was quite subtle. The 2 actors pulled it off very well! "Thank you" Lol
For me, it felt impromptu. If that was in the script, my appreciation for that scene jumps even higher than it had been.
The emptiness in Denzel’s eyes when he asked “what do you see when you look at me?” Is perfect, it depicts a calmness much like before the storm. Just like the calmness a calculated killer possesses before taking a life. It speaks volumes to the hopelessness to resist, because death is absolutely certain like the destruction following a storm.
Or he just dozed off straight ahead for a second while thinking of his dead wife,the world may never know.

Denzel’s cold death stare is haunting. seriously one of the greatest if not the greatest actor of all time. No one is even close to his acting skills. All his scenes feel so real as if he isn’t acting.
Teddy's reaction was so subtle and yet so stunning. He realized at that moment who he was dealing with and that this was no ordinary threat
Denzel is always superb. I believe he is one of the all-time greatest actors. He simply delivers greatness and stays the hell out of politics.
Bogat and Cagney are in the same category.

It was in the moment when Nicolai realized that what he saw in Robert's eyes was death that he got genuinely frightened. That made his smirk wane and eclipsed his face with terror.
The genius of their acting in this scene is unmatched.

I still can't believe Denzel doesn't have a case full of Oscars. One of the best actors ever. This scene is so brilliant. Both these actors gave their best performance here. Nicolai knows he's a psychopath and wants to show his detachment and control. Asking him what he sees. Robert just smiles and tells him his own backstory in detail just to show him he knows him all too well. And then turns the tables on him by asking him what he sees. Because he knows that the psychopath in front of him can not read his face at all. Basically saying; you don't know what to expect from me. That's when Nicolai gets flustered. He can't see anything there, because there is nothing there.

I do not think it was that at all, the fact that he admits, that he did bad things in his life, then, telling him, for him, he will become that person again, finished with the exact same question, Nicolai realizes then, that he is the same, a cold, calculated sociopath, something, Nicolai did not expect at all.
The way Denzel transitioned from English to Russian back to English gave the scene alot of depth. Nikolia realized in that moment this dude is different than anything he has dealt with

No one, not another, can capture an audience like Mr. Washington. He brings the truth to the screen, and he brings the truth to the Academy Awards. No body, not one soul, can surpass his performance.

Martin Csokas was amazing in the role of Nikolai. A brutal thug with no conscience,just following orders,doing what comes naturally. He’s a really good actor.

Training Day, Malcom X, Glory, Man on Fire, Flight, American Gangster, Crimson Tide, Fallen, Inside Man, Courage Under Fire, John Q, and the Book of Eil. Just to name a few. Denzel is one of the best.

I'll bet that out of the millions of people throughout the world who have watched this movie, not one person looked at their watch during this scene, no one's mind wandered, no one thought about the work they left unfinished, no one wondered if they left the lights on in their car. Everyone was in the moment, eyes and ears focused on those two actors and nothing else. Watching the movie for the first time, there's no time to savor the scene because Denzel was going to do something else that was riveting. Its why clips like this are great because it gives us a chance to admire everything about the scene.
I love this scene! I love how McCall basically guts Teddy with just his words, just his story. His words become the knife that spills Teddy's guts. Great scene, both actors did such an incredible job.

I love how Denzel took this thug's operation apart just as he promised, "brick by brick, dollar by dollar, body by body".
You’re sitting in your own restaurant, then in walks a man having killed one of your henchmen. In his hands he has his broken, bloody glasses as proof. Said man then proceeds to nonchalantly, go through your life story in third person, telling you about your exact childhood feelings and reasons why you killed your foster parents when nobody else had even thought of the possibility of it. Then the very same man gives you a chance to stop with what you’re doing like you should be grateful that you’re still breathing. That’s what made Nikolai shook. One of Denzel's best ever scenes in my opinion.
The quality of the villain put this film on another level. Every scene between these two is electric

"What do you see when you look at me?" WOW! Denzel nailed the 'look'. His eyes. No emotion. No humanity. They're just eyes. That 'look' that will make your blood run cold. I've seen that in Spec Ops guys. Not a glare you would ever want directed towards you.

Denzel is terrifying and gentle at the same time. His acting and storytelling is unmatched.
My favorite part about this scene is that they made such a seemingly big deal about flying out their top killer to go after McCall, made it seem as though he'd at the very least give him some kind of noticeable trouble...and yet he is reduced off-screen into nothing more than some broken and bloodied glasses. No name, no fight, no threat; pretty much was built up only to be eliminated in insignificance. And I love that subtlety, especially when Teddy immediately tries to segue that into trying to call McCall nothing to him.
Yes, a great scene. Both men acted this out so well that their very subtle facial expressions make the story Denzel tells seem real.

@@mja91352 There was a youtube commentor. Young boy. Couldn't spell correctly. Beaten up by the system, stop me if you've heard this one before. He was illiterate and yet a good man, Mr Anderson, took him in. When the boy made typos, this Micheal Anderson showed understanding and patience. When the boy had bad punctuation, incorrect grammar, Mr Anderson showed him compassion and love. It was a miracle. One week later, two other random commentors broke into a correcting session and destroyed the work this good man had done. Some small snarky comebacks were thrown by them, the type children might use.
I think these two were friends of the boy. they were scared that one day, Mr Anderson, this good man might wake up and see that the young boy would always make typos and throw him away like a piece of lint or a bottlecap.
So they decided not to find out.

I love this scene the most. The calmness of both men on the surface, in contrast clashing emotions on the inner side. Superb acting.
So I'll start this off by saying I love Denzal. He is just an awesome generational actor and is a master of his craft. But We have to give Marton Csokas his due. This was an amazing performance by him and this scene is just awesome how desolate he looks. Amazing job by both actors.

5:22 Notice that twitch on the left side of his lip, this shows his sudden shock or the unexpected statement from McCall which caught him off guard and he's now really scared but tries to hide the best he can and in doing so it comes out as a twitch or a strain in the muscle, this also shows how good of an actor Csokas(Nikolai) really is!

No not scared. A man like that doesn't scare just from words. He's seen the same things The Mccall character has seen if not worse because he continued to thrive in that dark world that Mccall left behind. It was recognition that he underestimated Mccall and now he fully realizes who he's dealing with and he will now deal with threat accordingly. Teddy is a psychopath who has seen and done a lot of evil and violence. That kind of person does not scare from words or a look. Its recognition of a worthy adversary.

Not to many actors can hold their own in a scene with Denzel but Martin Csokas is one of them. I love how the smug smirk look on his face fades ever so slightly , almost imperceptibly when McCall asks him what he sees when he looks at him. Probably the first time in his adult life that he hasn’t been in total control of a situation.
Two true professionals making a conversation about what is at hand.. amazing acting
Back in the 70's I met a man who was just as dangerous as Denzel in this movie. I met this man at a police dept who did undercover work. I saw this man do things that could defy logic. He was literally unbeatable in a fight. He is deceased now, died from COVID so they say. There are real guys out there like the Equalizer. I've seen him in action for real.
That's very easy to believe. I worked with an ex marine or something in a similar field. Was flow to area 51 to drop an unknown package off. Was not aloud to try and look out the windows the whole flight. He taught me a few tricks and how to hold a knife. This man was trained to be a weapon and kill people in very short sudden bursts of time. All the training is there in these fields. Crazy to hear the stories though

This is the most powerful scene in the movie. McCall tells Teddy his real life upbringing (he was orphan Nikolai who killed his adoptive parents because he was afraid the parents would wake up and reject him). Teddy is thrown off balance because he now realizes McCall has the mental edge - McCall knows exactly who Teddy is.
And Nikolai knows nothing about him
The director , scriptwriter, and these 2 gems of actors make my day of the years on earth. Bless them all for the art of acting and expressions. I’ve run out of superlatives.

When I look at him, I see someone who could not care less.
When I look at Denzel, I see determination.
One is going in a direction, the other is floating in the wind.
One of my favorite lines, " I promised someone that I had love a long time ago that I will not go back to that person that used to be, but for you...I will make that exception."
I first saw Denzel Washington in "Glory". He owned that movie from start to finish; other fine actors did the movie justice but Denzel was the center of it. Looks as though not much has changed; if anything he only got much, much better at what he does.
That scene where his character is getting lashed....he doesn't say a work but he speaks volumes.
@@andrewlocke3389 - Agree! My fav scene is where the men gathered around the fire, singing, at night before battle. D's character finally dropped the angry, tough guy act and became just like them: vulnerable, scared; knowing their death was eventual.
@@ShelleyMagner absolutely! That scene was another powerful scene in a movie replete with them. It still brings tears to my eyes.
" stop me if you know this one" cinematic gold
A lengthy joke with a complex setup usually follows that " stop me if you know this one", but in this case he just laid out the story of his life. That's cold-blooded to psychoanalysis someone as a scared little boy while at the same time insinuating that their origin story is a joke.
@@ArgosySpecOps You can tell the slight look of sadness and uncomfortablility on his face. Almost regret. You saw him take multiple sips of his wine.

At....."Whatta' you see when you look at me?".....the ALMOST imperceptible drop of Nikolai's face. Recognition. Excellent.
Obviously Denzel is a legend & brilliant as always but one can't ignore how fantastic Martin Csokas was in this film as well. His Russian accent, demeanour were all flawless👌🏻
What we need right now is a prequel.
Denzel is just the GOAT
