Homer in the Iliad and the Odyssey speaks only of Danaans, Achaeans, Argians and not of Greeks. The Hellenes (tribe of Southern Thessaly also called Argos Pelasgians), at his time, did not constitute yet a people or a Nation (Thucydides I,3). He affirms in the Iliad that "Zeus is Pelasgians and dodonean" (XVI,234). Precisely these Pelasgians (🇦🇱) were considered by all the ancient Greek authors as "the first inhabitants of Greece" before "The arrival of the Hellenes (🇬🇷)"! Another word that was misunderstood or glossed over. Indeed the Greeks arrived from somewhere because they were not indigenous. As they did not come from the North ( one wanted to make us believe the opposite), they could only be foreigners coming from elsewhere. It is this elsewhere which is difficult to define very precisely. But the legends, which are only embellished, idealized or metaphorized historical facts, give us some precious indications on the first foreign ethnic groups having occupied the country of the Pelasgians: the Danaans (Egyptians from whom the Dorians descend), the Cadmeans (Phoenicians) and the Pelopides (Assyrians). Among the peoples of archaic Greece the Ionians, Aeolians and Arcadians were descendants of the Pelasgians, indigenous populations conquered by the Hellenic invaders: they could claim to be indigenous populations. Now Herodotus explains very well that the Ionians were Pelasgians who, after having rubbed shoulders with the Greeks and learned their language, became full-fledged Hellenes... The Ionians were thus a fraction of the Pelasgians people (🇦🇱) having adopted the civilization of the Hellenic invaders (🇬🇷), assimilated their culture and integrated their ethnicity ( Herodotus I,56,57,58/VIII,44 ). The crazy thing is that Achilles almost definitely knew it was Hector leading the charge, yet deliberately targeted his lieutenant, instead. Achilles could have effectively ended the war (or at least dealt a huge blow to the Trojans) right there and then, yet chose not to just to play head games with Hector. Pretty insane.
@Emperor Ssraeshza True but the Greeks even in the books could not get to the walls without defeating it's defender, Hector. The Greeks needed Achilles to get them to the wall and Odysseus to get inside the walls.
No glory to be had. If he killed hector with a throw no one would have seen it. Achilles wanted it to happen in front of all the people of Troy and before the Greeks as well. Maximize his glory.
Every time I watch this scene, I always think that even though Achilles pulls off an icredible kill, Eudorus' contribution cannot be ommited; he gives the spear in such a perfect way, that all Achilles has to do is simply rotate the spear aim and throw. He doesn't to change his grip, he doesn't have to point the tip to the right direction... nothing.
This scene is amazing, it shows the difference in strength between the two. Hector tries to get him back at a shorter distance but still doesn’t put the same amount of strength, speed and accuracy Achilles did. Showing that even tho Hector is a great warrior he isn’t on Achilles level.
Well to be fair. Achilles was on leveled ground and was significantly stronger than Hector. So he could put more power, strength, speed and accuracy into his throw. Hector was on a horse, constantly bouncing up and down. So throwing his spear was never gonna have the same strength, power, or speed behind it as Achilles did
His ability to throw the spear, is beyond comprehension. Indeed, a true well prepared warrior. Hours of training, he then has the ability to do almost impossible things, that an average could do. Nonetheless, he wanted glory, so he worked to get it.
I don't know about you, but I'd turn around and run like hell if I saw him make that throw. Dude can chuck a spear like that, no way am I getting involved.
Late comment, but Achilles would have known that the man in front wasn't Hector. He wasn't aiming to kill Hector, he was intentionally aiming to kill his 'right hand man'. Ernesto Gastelum He knew Hector was in front because he's the prince of Troy and leads most of their battles. So essentially he did know which one was Hector.
One of the best ancient movies of all the time. Achilles make the full use of gravity while throwing results gaining more speed as he throwing from upper side to lower side,whereas hector throws against the gravity viz;
