Understanding neurotransmission (antidepressants)

  • Neurons communicate with the adjacent neuron using a neurotransmitter that excites or inhibits the next neuron. But we need to get that neurotransmitter back out of the area very quickly by a number of methods, so that there is not constant excitation or inhibition at the next neuron. Our medications that affect neurotransmission can target the receptors on the neurons, they can mimic the neurotransmitter, or they can target the ways in which we get the neurotransmitters out of the synaptic cleft. We use the antidepressants and antiemetics as the examples.
