  • KTM Freeride E-XC Rear Brake Pedal Kit Parts list. These are all the parts I used to install my rear brake brake pedal kit on my Freeride E-XC using all quality Original OEM KTM parts from a 2016 Freeride 250R.
    The brake pedal kit install is fairly straight forward for a proficient mechanic. You will need to come up with a return spring bracket solution. This is very simple and could be done a number of ways. You may not technically need the return spring, but it’s a good idea, especially since the Formula master cylinder is not as quality as the Brembo units and a little stickier.
    Consider shopping your local dealer. The prices may be as good or better if you’re a good regular customer and you wont have to pay shipping!

    You will need to use your banjo bolt from the hand brake master cylinder unless you want to purchase another one. You will also need to purchase a bottle of DOT 4 or 5.1 brake fluid. The orings on the banjos are easily damaged.
    Use gloves (and possibly glasses) when handling brake fluid. Keep a water source close for contact with skin and eyes. Brake fluid is very caustic. Rinse anything thats exposed to the brake fluid. It can eat paint etc...
    - - - - Additional Options to try at your own risk - - - - -
    You can cobble together a cheaper solution to get this built. I purchased a used master cylinder on ebay which with the rebuild, cost about $75 instead of about $150 retail.
    The Freeride master cylinder is from any Freeride Gas model 2014-20 or 65SX 2016-20. There were some more avail on ebay when I looked. Many fast mini racers upgrade the brakes. You could also gamble on ordering a Chinese master cylinder, but I DESPISE most Chinese parts and wouldn’t trust my brakes to Chinese produced junk. If it doesn’t fit, you just wasted your money.
    There are also aftermarket brake lines avail for the Freeride gas models. These may be a good option as they are “upgrade” steel lines. Just make sure they have 8mm fittings for the Formula brakes. The Banjos/master cylinder/calipers are 8mm fittings. Standard KTM Brembo stuff is 10mm and won’t fit. The 4-stoke line appears to be longer, but I imagine it still works, but I do not know. The 250R line is 638mm.
    When the brake pedal was on backorder for 3 months because of COVID, I was going to try and cobble on a KTM big bike lever. We couldn’t find my friend’s take-off in his garage. If you have a friend who’s upgraded his brake lever (or downgraded to Chinese garbage bling) see if you can have or buy his old stock lever for cheap to try 🤣 It likely wont fit without some heavy modification.
    You can also spend even more money and convert the rear Formula brake caliper to a Brembo caliper by purchasing a new rear brake carrier. I believe Nihilo and maybe MotoMaster make them for the 85SX which is the same as the Freeride. They may require a rotor purchase as well. You could then order Brembo master cylinder, calipers, a brake line and 10mm banjo bolts. If you are a heavy rear brake user, it may be worth investing. Personally I’ve never had the stock brakes fade, even grabbing as hard as I could from wide open for 20min motos on the motocross track. If you have crappy bike maint maybe upgrade.
    You could also buy Chinese knock off Brembo master cylinders and calipers if you dare! I do not recommend this at all, but it is an option. Chinese parts are dangerous a lot of the time! They practice dishonest intellectual property theft, are usually made with very poor tolerances, poor materials and universal generic fits that require modification. Chinese care nothing about quality, because they cannot be sued when their garbage parts fail and injure or kill you. If you don’t value your life, buy Chinese parts.

      No option to install one from the factory. The hand brake is actually really cool but it messes with me when I switch back to the big bike. I ride a scooter and bicycle with hand brakes all the time, but my brain goes back to muscle memory when I’m on a “motorcycle.”
      It’s a great bike, but won’t replace a gas bike in wide open spaces. It’s fantastic in slow moving or tight spaces. If you have a giant backyard or very tight gnarly trails and only cover about 30km a day, it’s a great bike. I have lots of videos (a playlist) where you can see the kinds of places I ride it. I expected some shortcomings the bike would have when I purchased it. It’s been probably the most fun bike purchase of my life. Realistically weigh it’s strengths and weaknesses and you will purchase in the right frame of mind and love it!

    I also had trouble bleeding Formula brakes, to be honest that's the nr1 thing I hate on this bike. I also had to rebuild front as it faded out in trafic...
    I had exact question about doubble brake on rear, i think good example and a lot of experience is in stunt bikes - they aimply have doubble everything.
    I ride more than a year, and I got uaed to the handlebar rear brake, it actually saved me many times in looping a wheelie, while with regular foot brake I would have crashed.

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 3 lety +2

      This rear master cylinder has a little pedal pressure delay when bleeding. Once I noticed it it bled fine. I may not have even needed to rebuild it in hindsight. The main problem with this experiment was every time I tried something new I had re-bleed the air out of two long brake lines. Doing that manually takes a while. I went through two full bottles of fluid.
      If I had any time and a place to work I’d be cranking out videos about this stuff like crazy. I enjoy getting the info out there. Unfortunately every video is pretty much a total pain in the ass to make. Mostly because I’m nearly always in a rush and have constant interruptions.
      I like the hand brake. I have to have the foot brake. Too much jumping around between bikes. As soon as I have any time I’ll probably set up a double brake. As of right now who knows when that’ll be! I have a backlog of videos of at least six months that I want to make. This stupid f-ing virus is doubling down on the pain in the assness of everything and has delayed them all. How do the supermoto guys do it? The ones that do all the cool tricks seem to often have a left handed brake lever and a rear brake foot pedal that both work together. Are they special levers that closes a valve on the left handed brake when it's not used so it wont back up into the reservoir when you use the foot pedal? I'm just asking as I don't know myself.

      Christian Williams not 100% sure on that. There are gadgets that are cable actuated from the rear master cylinder and there are LHRBs from Clake and Rekluse that use their own master cylinders so maybe there is some trick they use. Hi John,
    Say, I just installed a rear foot brake on my 2022 E-XC. It's a little different than your setup because the 2022 rear caliper banjo hole points forward and not to the right like yours. That means the pre-fab KTM brake line you mention has the banjos at the wrong angle. I had to use a 30" line with 90 deg fittings on each end.
    But my problem is getting the fluid into the line and bleeding it. I do know how to bleed lines (at least, I thought I did), but I'm stuggling with this set up. Can you give me a few pointers on getting the fluid into the line and caliper, then bleeding the system?
    Thanks!!

    • @JohnHowerton137
      @JohnHowerton137  Před 2 lety

      It is a little tricky, so it’s not just you. You can take off the line (for ease) from the master cylinder, open the bleeder at the caliper and push fluid up the line with a syringe to get the majority bled out. Reconnect the line to the master and push more through.
      The tricky part is the master cylinder. It’s been a little too long to remember exactly, but it has a sweet spot when pumping the pedal to get it to move in more fluid. It was either small pumps, giant complete pumps, or really slow pumps. Sorry I can’t remember exactly. One of those three should move much larger amounts of fluid than the other. I’ve bled a lot of brake systems and never dealt with one that was so sensitive/finicky, but once you figure it out the trick, it’s easy.

      Not sure if the new battery will work or not. My guess is the chassis changed to accommodate the bigger and heavier case.
      I think the future upgrade will be better cell technology and a battery technician rebuilds them into the original case. I think that's what they're doing with the mediocre Surron batteries.

Not sure if you could ever compete against dirt bikes with a clutch like that on a 450 ?
      I’ve been using my rear hand brake like a clutch at stop n go tight rock n root filled southern Maine single track .

      Yeah I was joking. I just bought a 2021, tires, security, etc. I'll save up and do this set up soon. Having a normal foot brake is necessary IMO. Id love to see a left bar "motor power cut" lever which would give a similar effect as pulling in the clutch on a gas bike. It would stop motor regen braking effect as well as cutting power which I guess would be same as simply letting off of the throttle, but with no drag from motor braking (regen drag)
