my clearing tip is to be sneaky with your courses and suggest joint honours if the exact course you wanted isn't on clearing but a similar one is! i had a friend who contacted york about their listing of politics in clearing when she was due to study history. when the woman on the phone said she'd be able to offer her a politics place, she asked whether there was the potential for a joint honours with history, even though history wasn't listed on clearing. she was offered a place for history and politics in the end, just from asking. it might not work out in every situation, but it's really worth asking!

      Hi Ellie
It really depends on the university. If you have booked accommodation and paid the deposit, you will get it back if you don't get the grades. Some universities guarantee accommodation for insurance students, others will group you together with clearing students and accommodation is given on a first come first served basis. Good luck, I am sure it will all work out for you.

I deferred my place the day before A level results 2 years ago. I simply emailed the admissions tutor of my course and had a reply back within a few hours agreeing to the deferral.
If you are in Clearing, it may be easier to make a fresh application to your choice of course/uni with your grades in hand rather than rush the decision this summer.

My advice is to think about what you would like to do as a career in the future and work backwards. What degree would best help you to reach this goal?
Or if you are like me and have no idea about a future career, what A level did you enjoyed doing the most? Put this into Clearing and see what comes up. I applied for politics initially, but enjoyed my Geography A level the most. If you put Geography into Clearing you will find courses on urban planning, geology, climate science, global health, disaster management as well as the usual human/physical geography degrees. Look at the course modules and see what interests you. Good luck!

    • @ImogenWhite
      @ImogenWhite  Před 2 lety +2

If you enter Clearing, you are able to directly contact universities to see if they have a place available on a course you are interested in. This is usually done by phone (although some universities, like Liverpool, do Clearing online). You can search for available vacancies via the UCAS website, make a list of universities you think you may be interested in and then give them a call.
Universities can then make you a verbal offer. Once you have this, you can enter it into your UCAS Track. On Results Day, this can be done from 2pm - this allows you to call several universities and gives you some time to consider your options. Universities will often give you a time period to enter your choice on Track - they don’t want to hold places for people who may not be interested. Once you’ve submitted the choice on Track, the university will then formally accept your place.

You probably will not have to go through clearing so please DO NOT decline your place. You will need to email admissions. Most universities have a 'Change my offer' request form.
This is the one on Reading University's website (half way down the page):

If you don't make your Firm's grades, they will have made the decision already to accept or reject you- universities get your results one week before you do. UCAS track updates at 8am on the 18th August, usually before you get your A level results, so you know if you are in before you open the results envelope. If your Firm choice rejects, you can call the university and see if they will offer you an alternative course with your grades. Good luck!

The universities that are showing in Clearing now will be the only ones. These universities won't be in Clearing:
Bath - We don't expect to have any vacancies
Cambridge: No adjustment or clearing spaces. They do run a special adjustment scheme for rejected applicants meeting certain criteria, but you will have been contacted about this if eligible.
LSE: "We do not envisage being in adjustment or clearing this year."
Imperial: No clear statement as yet. Suggested wording that they won't be advertising Clearing vacancies.
Oxford: Does not participate in clearing, extra, or adjustment.
UCL: No statement yet - occasionally limited adjustment places.
St Andrews: Doesn't usually have clearing spaces.

Clearing opened on 5th July and universities receive A level results a week before 10th August. So it looks like you may have to wait until Tuesday for your email to be answered.
