I was once at baseball camp in SF and Puig was shooting a commercial near by while the Dodgers where in town. In the middle of the day he came over and hopped into a game in the older group and began playing third base. Puig reminds me of a kid (maybe me back in my youth) who spends his days playing every single chance he can on a vacant lot somewhere with cut out pieces of cardboard or carpet remnants for bases. There are always going to be haters but I find his youthful exuberance for the game to be refreshing. I remember when I "got to play" baseball everyday...pretty sure I did a cartwheel rounding the bases once. I seem to recall the exalted Ozzie Smith cartwheeling off the field after turning amazing double or triple plays. No one complained about him.

When I was a kid growing up, I had a group of about 10 friends, and I was one of the youngest. We would play baseball all day every day all summer long. Since it was five on five, we had some modified rules and a modified field, but that field taught me to hit line drives up the middle and to the gaps. (Basically, instead of a 90 degree angle at the plate, it was about a 45 degree angle.) One of the older guys we played with was drafted by the Blue Jays and played with their minor league system for awhile before going back to college, winning the Heisman, and playing in the NFL.

Could he have worked harder? Absolutely. Could he have been a better teammate? Definitely. But this man is the perfect example of misunderstood;despite having enormous problems behind the scenes, he still managed to be one of the best ball players the Dodgers had in the past decade. I remember seeing him hitting a home run in the World Series…ONE HANDED. I remember seeing him hit an inside the park home run… TO WALK OFF AND WIN.
