      I love the 20" bass drum- really resonant but not too big that it holds a long tone.
      Lovely sizes and satin rosewoods a really beautiful finish! Killer sounding setup for sure!

    Hi Jesse, nice kit. I'm preparing an order for USA custom 2/14/18 kit. I'm left handed like you. How did you go about indicating this to Gretsch for the tom mounts? And do you think having the rack mount drilled for a lefty could affect resale value? Planning to keep this kit for life but just wondering.

    • @JesseShortis
      @JesseShortis  Před 2 lety

      Hi Jules! Nice I've been wanting an 18" kick like that!
      With my USA Custom order I didn't indicate that I was left handed to them- they actually seem to put 2 air vents on toms now, one on either side of your tom mount. But they only do this on rack toms, my floor toms, snare, and kick drum all have 1 airvent still.
      Either way I don't think it would hurt the resale value at all. In fact I'd argue adding tom Mounts, bass drum mounts, any other accessories adds significant value to your kit.
      Do you plan on adding a snare to your kit? And what finish are you thinking of getting?
      This is all the fun stuff of ordering a custom- and no answer is wrong!

      Hi Jesse, I didn't know they did that (2 vents on tom tom). Cool. My Fibes kit (Austin jasper shell) has the badge on only one side. I haven't decided on the Gretsch finish yet. I like dark walnut (a classic), natural (like Charlies Watts), or piano black with natural wood /inlays hoops on the bass drum. Looking for something timeless. I like wraps too, I think Art Blakey had the same as yours (looks dark in black and white photos). I like mounted toms on the bass drum too, however If I decide to sit lower, then having the 12" on a snare stand might be better. Cheers

    • @JesseShortis
      @JesseShortis  Před 2 lety

      I love the dark walnut! I've been wanting to get a gloss dark walnut jazz kit for myself sometime in the future. The natural satin finish is very nice, I have a USA Custom in that finish and it is quite stunning. Yeah, the Red Glass Nitron finish was very popular in Art Blakey's era and I believe he had the same finish on his kit too.
      Personally I'd suggest going for the bass drum mount for your toms. If you use it then that's great, and with an 18" bass drum you should have alot of room to adjust the height of your rack tom without needing to consider a snare stand for it. Besides, even if you do the bass drum mount won't hurt resale value if you're worried about that- and I can say with 100% confidence it does NOT affect the bass drum sound if there's a mount or not. All of my kits have bass drum mounts and they sound fantastic, so don't let anyone saying it "chokes the drum" fool you.

      @@JesseShortis I agree with you and not concerned about mount affecting sound. It's probably better for me to have the tom tom plate installed than the rail consolette (because of left hand configuration). Strongly leaning to dark walnut gloss....

    • @JesseShortis
      @JesseShortis  Před 2 lety

      I'd strongly recommend the plate over the rail- the rail is great but you get a much larger range of control with the bass drum plate. And incase you ever switch hardware (a Yamaha mount or DW mount that you can put a Gretsch tom arm on) you get the freedom of being able to still mount that from your bass drum- which is super handy

    How do i order a custom kit myself?

    • @JesseShortis
      @JesseShortis  Před 3 lety

      You’d have to order through either a local music store licensed to order them, Gretsch have a list of registered stores you can check on, if that doesn’t have you country just ask around different stores, they’ll generally know a store who can sell to you.

      The intro wasn't actually my doing- the start is a clip from Gretsch drums USA CZcams account for Mike Johnstons first USA Custom.
      I added that clip because Mike said it better than I could ever hope to- but not my mixing in the start🤷
