  • "Hail, Columbia" is a US patriotic song used as a counter-march for the Vice President of the United States of America.
    The piece was used, along with the My Country song, 'Tis of Thee, as the de facto American anthem until 1931. Columbia is a poetic name for the United States used in the 18th century. The anthem was written by Philip Phile in 1789 for the inauguration of George Washington, entitled "The President's March", with lyrics by Joseph Hopkinson in 1798. This national anthem was used in the United States for most of the 19th century, but fell out of favor after World War I when the "Star-Spangled Banner" was officially adopted. This song should not be confused with the song Columbia, Gem of the Ocean.
    ▬▬▬▬ WORDS ▬▬▬▬
    Hail Columbia, happy land!
    Hail, ye heroes, heav’n-born band,
    Who fought and bled in freedom’s cause,
    Who fought and bled in freedom’s cause,
    And when the storm of war was gone
    Enjoy’d the peace your valor won.
    Let independence be our boast,
    Ever mindful what it cost;
    Ever grateful for the prize,
    Let its altar reach the skies.
    Firm, united let us be,
    Rallying round our liberty,
    As a band of brothers joined,
    Peace and safety we shall find.
