The shoes were legitimately better leather and better PU midsoles back then. Wish I could have been there and into shoes at the time and felt og fresh PU jordans but time is a vicious mistress
That rear tab digging in didn't happen on the originals because they had slightly higher collar and the original materials were much softer and made the shoe way more comfortable...retros are just not made to play in

They’re’s a reason why i wear jordan 4s since they weigh your feet down its kinda a good weight restriction for weight workout during the day but no in sports like basketball
Most retros use a very hard polyurethane foam in the midsole. It's meant to keep its shape without the creasing lines you see on softer midsoles that are actually comfortable. This is what happens when fashion concerns overtake function.
mj used to play in converses in college and said he prefers flat footed shoes, hence the AJ1 and AJ4 specifically, i guess the AJ3 too even though the 3s are comfortable. i love 4s and 1s but damn they’re just not good basketball shoes, were defs ahead of their time in the 80s tho

But aren't the modern retros not really made with the same materials, so it would be difficult to compare. Jordan retros are more for fashion (and made very cheaply)

I would ball in a 3 before I would ever ball in a 4. I would probably choose a 12 or 13 or 14 over both those tho but 3's definitely basketball better than 4's
It's just newer jordan retros that have horrible cushion. You dont even gotta go back to the ogs to feel the difference. Had plenty of jordans from the face box era & the cushion dont compare to anything from 2010ish onwards, the 4s especially. 4 heeltabs are awful either way tho, anyone hellbent on playing in these should get a prodominately leather pair

I play in them and just wear thicker socks, the heel tab does kinda dig in tho
Try the PSG or the SB ones, their back tab is floppy so they don't dig into your Achilles.
