I live in Georgia, US. I was run over by a car. Not hit by, run over by. Police response was fast (only about 4 blocks from station). Got one witness statement from someone who wasn’t sure what direction I had been traveling. A woman offered to make a statement- and she was one of the first people to reach me - but they declined. The one witness statement they got disappeared. She was cited for hitting a pedestrian in a crosswalk. It cost her $155 for nearly killing me. Without my helmet, I would have been dead. 10 days in ICU, 3 days in acute care. 4 surgeries. My wife and I met with the police chief to find out why there was no significant penalty. Since the police did not witness the crash they could not cite her for running a red light. They could not cite her for reckless driving. We are working with the mayor to implement a “vulnerable rod users act” so that the first incident would have a significant penalty
I commuted for almost 10 years in Madison WI on my bike. 28 miles a day. The stuff I saw and experienced over those years has put my bike in the shed. I now ride on an indoor trainer or on a mountain bike away from cars. There are so many people in cars and trucks who are mean and hateful, doing things on purpose to scare or possibly hurt cyclists. Then there are the hordes of aloof texters who do not look at the road, and beyond that you have to survive those who feel they own the road and cyclists should just go back to where they came from. Coal rolling, screaming out of the passenger window while cutting into your bike lane at 50mph to make you crash, hitting you in the face while jogging past you on the bike path (ok, no cars, but what an asshole anyway), jumping out of a truck at a red light where I insisted on my right of way to beat me up, jumping out of a truck with a knife pulled because they just "didn't kill me" when they ran a stop sign, so why am I upset? - that is the reality in a "liberal" US city on a bike. I was at the point of getting a concealed carry license and the only reason I didn't is that there's no way to take it into the place I worked at. So then came covid, layoff, and now screw the whole city. I am moving away into the country, I will get me a big truck and a big dog, a gun, and prep for the big apocalypse when rednecks will want to take it all back, because those cyclists are the devil. It is all connected ;)
@@simonkevnorris Just goes to show that bad drivers are bad drivers, no matter what vehicle they use. There is one important distinction, though: A car driver hitting a pedestrian is so much more likely to seriously injure or even kill them than a cyclist is. That is especially true for SUVs, which are so popular in the USA
I moved from South Africa to London for a supposed safer life. I’ve been attacked and on a separate occasion threatened after witnessing a car break in London. This never happened to me in South Africa. I’m just waiting to be targeted while out on my bike.
I drive a van and a car. Every single day I see dangerous, negligent, incompetent, aggressive, impatient and distracted drivers, but here's the thing: I NEVER, EVER worry that I will be blamed for their behaviour. The world seems to recognise (correctly) that we are individuals and don't have collective responsibility. Why would I be held accountable for the actions of some other guy, just because I'm using the same type of transport? So why on earth do you lump all cyclists together? Quite apart from that, the impacts of poor cycling are way, way less than the impacts of poor drivers. 90% of drivers break speed limits, but does anyone say "I HATE DRIVERS" ? My insurance premiums are ridiculous thanks to the thousands of people killed by drivers, the millions of uninsured drivers and the billions in damage caused by bad drivers. All the risk, the congestion, the costs, the noise, the space, the injuries - 99% of it is from drivers. Leave cyclists alone, they're part of the solution.
In the US, what a lot of us cyclists have started doing is carrying a mid-caliber firearm while out on rides. It's sad I have to resort to carrying a gun because I hate guns, but I love my life and my children's lives more.
I was sitting in my velomobile one day taking a break. Two men came up in a truck, they jump out and start to pick my velomobile up to steal it with me in it. I had the race hood one. I yelled at them saying someone was in here and they ran back to the truck and sped off.
its a shame the one thing that brings us love (cycling) turns us into targets for theft. its a shame, and shame the people who attacked this woman for her bike
Whoever is in charge of the UK police force needs to be sacked for endorsing ignorant statements like “the vast majority of bike trips take place without incident“!!!
Retired Cat 2 cyclist here. Get off the roads. the days of cycling on public roads are over. its just too dangerous these days. Get a MTN bike or ride rail trails.
The advent of angle grinder resistant u-locks has probably had a hand in this increase of attacks/thefts as it's 'easier' to steal a bike that's being ridden than one that is locked up with one or more of these new locks.
@@jstoner9029further funding the police won't do jackshit if you don't start implementing policies which stop getting people into gangs to begin with.
Having a good quality, but extremely ugly looking, bike frame goes a long way. I found one that looks like absolute hell but can still ride good with the right parts.
Riding a road bike on the roadways is way, way more dangerous than riding a motorcycle IMO. I had SO MANY close calls on my road bike I sold it, bought a hybrid, and ride exclusively bike paths now. It's much more boring riding mostly the same thing all the time, but I'm not worried the whole time about a car careening into me and then blaming me for being on the road. People also weirdly are much more accepting of a flat-bar bike riding on the sidewalk (when necessary) than a bike with drops, I still don't really understand that.
We have a tory government, who designed, normalised and still, even now, boast about their 'hostile environment' (who was it really aimed at as immigration has only gone up under tory rule, despite so much more of our money being spent on it?). They reduced Police numbers by tens of thousands and they stoke division through their culture wars, silly social media posts etc.. We now have an incredibly wide divide between the 'haves' and 'have nots' (this latter group is still expanding) and this also breeds hatred, anger and of course incidents of theft. I cannot wait for the general election.
I was staying in Central London and I went for a morning run and I ran through that park. I think it was like five or six in the morning and I got attacked. And to be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever went back outside for a jog when I travel since then not sure if that is from Covid or if I was affected by that instant more than I think
my bike was stolen twice this year. first time it was violent, 4 guys came and pushed me off, retrieved it without the help of police, as they did nothing since theyre useless. second time though, it got stolen when my mum rode it to work, literally a police station next to the workplace, they didnt even bother getting the security footage. seriously, if any of you think that the police will help, you need to wake up. you should be scared to ride your bike. you need to be alert at all times. ride through back streets, avoid main roads. i stay far away from main roads, i ride through routes that pretty much nobody could think of.
Police do nothing about it for decades. I had three very expensive bikes stolen in 1 year, they tried to tell me that there was no CCTV on KIlburn HIgh Road , complete lies!
this is where riding ratty cheap looking 90s gravel bikes and fixies comes in handy, wearing lycra and having big brand names all over your bike obviously attracts attention
Wow! I'll add this to the long list of reasons why I would hate to live anywhere near London. I live a small provincial city more than an hour's drive from the M25. I can ride for 20 mins and I'm in the middle of nowhere with a very low population density - just tiny little rural backroads, forests for miles and a car every ten minutes or so. The kind of place where you say hello to other people that you pass because it's so unusual to see anyone else out there. The idea of living in a place where gangsters will drag you off your bike ... why would anyone want to live in a place like that? I do go up to London sometimes and I can't wait to get out of it again. It's madness. Pure madness. So many people, so fast, all pushing past each other, and the constant relentless noise. It makes your head spin.
Agree that London is bad and there are safer places. But my understanding was that the first lady interviewed had been attacked on country roads outside of London, so it seems that being somewhere else in the southeast doesn't necessarily make you safe from this kind of crime.
There are some creative solutions to put airtags on bike and those batteries last ~1 year. Downside is they are a little big, make noise occasionally (can be modded to not) and you need an iphone
yes there ware various options, one can fit in the handle bar, one can go on the bottle cage mounts with security screws, one can go in the seat post. I have a galaxy tag inside my frame.
The Met - "the vast majority of bike journeys happen without incident" but if you call prince Andrew a nonce you'll spend a night in the cells. Do we really need them to make a public statement that they really don't give a fuck or is that too a waste of Police resources?
I have cycled enthusiastically all my life and the most I have ever paid for a bike is £500 and I ride about 120 miles per week, currently riding a 1980s steel framed Dawes Super Galaxy for which I paid £150, and my other bike wouldnt fetch £100 on E-bay, and I stress I am a keen cyclist, you can do it on an inexpensive quality bike, loads used on the second hand market, I have never understood quite why people insist on riding bikes costing £10,000 or more, a bike of that value would always have been a target, this is not new, its just that there are far more of these bikes around now aand cars are far harder to steal, I would be amazed if anybody stole my bikes, and 30 years ago I would have been wary about riding a top end bike in London or Birmingham or Manchester too, just dont be so stupid and ride a cheaper less flashy bike, its unecessary in any case, its no different to how its always been, and quite why anybody would want to ride a super expensive bike round and round in circles in Hyde Park I dont know PS I have never had a bike stolen and I am not particularly careful even when riding in Birmingham, and even if my bike was nicked, it would be merely inconvenient and annoying because I am fond of them but they are not worth enough to get too upset about
Yep, beards love their £8k Felts, so do the yoof. My London bikes a tatty Genesis one twenty, reliable, quality, but the yoof isn’t interested in a bike that’s probably worth £200 tops now. There’s absolutely no way I’d be riding a £3k electric Brompton through Hackney or Lambeth.
@@greigs9384 "There’s absolutely no way I’d be riding a £3k electric Brompton through Hackney or Lambeth." You've been lucky, that's all (or perhaps don't live in a big city) - I've had 6 bikes nicked through a lifetime of riding cheapish bikes. It's so off-putting as you inevitably get attached to your bike. I'm very wary of leaving a bike anywhere now which seems so unnecessarily restrictive. I blame other people!!
@@sroberts605 Yep maybe lucky then, but the way I see it now is that wheras my Dawes Super Galaxy would have been a massive target in the 1980s as it was state of the art back then, ironically its upgraded now so better than ever, however it is way low down on the criminals hit list, they are after carbon roadbikes, ebikes, Cannondales, Specialized etc. not 1980s steel framed bikes like mine, so I now feel safer than ever to leave my lovely bike, and if I use a lock that is quite a bit of hassle to break through, nobody is likely to be bothered to make the effort to steal a bike that might fetch £50-£80 down at the pub if they were lucky, they will make the effort for a bike that is worth £thousands, easy to sell, in high demand but not mine anymore, and its not like I am getting less enjoyment for riding an old, it school bike, I have actually uncharecteristically just bought (collect today) a Specialized Creo e-roadbike, its the most I have ever paid for a bike and I certainly wont be riding it around in circles in Hyde park!!, I will stick to my cheapo old school bikes for that I can then enjoy a kind of inverted snobery maybe ?
The problem is bikes costing £5,000 to £10,000 (and more). Only Pro level bike are subject to this sort of attack. If you ride a cheap bike you are pretty safe. Lessons learned: forget about expensive pro bikes and buy and ride a cheap bike. Ridiculous that the video article did not explain this properly. I've been cycling all my life, four bikes in the garage, and the "most expensive" was £500. Do yourself a favor, nobody except professionals needs a bike costing as much as a car. You become a target.
Shocking crimes like this in big cities.Years ago whilst running in San Francisco a guy tried to mug me and demanded money, but I was too quick for him and ran away, I do not carry money when out running anyway, so a waste of time tackling me.
i don't think any of the thieves hate cyclists. they see them as a great opportunity to make profit. think about it: you can steal an expensive vehicle without registration, gps or ensurance that you can sell quickly.
@@ketle369 nonsense; the best weapons are ordinary things, like a pen, torch or rubber hammer. Even a rolling pin. Rope is also good, or a large bolt or nut on the end of string. There's nothing illegal about these things.
I came close being 'bikejacked' in Orpington last year. I have also survived 3 acts of thuggery where they tried to make me crash. A few months ago I witnessed a motorcyclist tried to kick a cyclist into a line of parked cars. I have stopped road cycling and I am in the process of moving away from London. Can we have confirmation on the nationality of those performing these robberies? And I mean countries of origin - not the fact they may have a British passport.
This is not good. Here In Cambridge, most people ride around ideally on rather beat-up, dirty, scratched bikes that aren't worth nicking. For us, it's the only way. I don't really know whether it's possible to have a large number of people cycling around, solo, on expensive, light bikes. They are a target, that's inevitable. Maybe some sort of private insurance is the answer? It sounds awful, but overall wealth has a cost that can't necessarily be borne by the state. Although I think the manufacturers need to take the situation seriously and provide basic tracking integral to any up-market bike, tho salvage would have to be funded privately.
Theres that london cyclist who finds car drivers with fogged windows and on their phone when stopped at the light and turns them into police. I wonder if hes still alive.
Why do I get the impression the description of the criminals is deliberately absent in this report? Who are you afraid of offending, BBC? Similar crimes are happening here, in the U.S. A cyclist was hit by a car in New Jersey, then the driver got out of and beat the bicyclist to death. I'm very reluctant to ride a bike anyplace other than designated bike paths. Unfortunately people (usually women) are still harassed on them.
They are teenagers, so children and a sensitive subject. The sad truth is Google, Apple and Facebook know who these criminals are and have enough data to prevent crimes from occurring, but that wouldn't be good business for them.
Cyclists and pedestrians need to have the right of way revoked. Wholesale. It has caused a culture of entitlement and general asshole attitude when they're on the road. I've been yelled at, cursed at, delayed, almost forced to hit, etc from bike riders and pedestrians. So all I can think of when they get his is "it's most likely their fault" And I don't like being calous towards them. But they caused me to feel this way. I didn't cause it.
Air tag your bike, if you can. A friend haf done this, and his bike was taken from him by thugs. Thieves are usually pretty apologetic when they are caught, red handed.
It's kinda insane that so many people from my country emigrate to England / London, yet I am so grateful to be staying in my home country - feels so, so much safer.
I got ran over 5 times. Never my fault. The cars never guess my speed right and don’t look over their shoulders cause it’s to exhausting. First accident was when I was 10. the dude ran me over and ran off. Says a lot about drivers when they hit a ten year old and scoot off
Its been happening with motorbikes for years i guess they just moved on to cycles if police wont do shit about a motorbike they are not going to bother over a push bike
You have to protect yourselves and your property, the Police won’t do it. Go on your bike but learn to defend yourself with what you can carry and do. Defend yourself first and ask questions later. The Police have lost the streets and the public. Take care out there.
Just think for a bit where this leads. Maybe we would all be safer driving around in tanks? Guns are not the solution. You cannot restore safety with more guns. What percentage of population are in jail in the US again? And which country has the most liberal gun laws? I mean make it make sense, don't make it about your personal beliefs for once.
Don't feel bad guys. Our cops over here in the states aren't worth a shit anymore either. The difference is many cyclists over here carry now like myself.

Sorry to hear this happened to you, I won't ride on road any more just because people are to distracted, and care not for anyone's safety.
As a pedestrian I've been hit by several cyclists that failed to stop at a red light or for a pedestrian crossing.
It is all connected ;)
lol the rednecks aren't you're enemy. @@therealpeterburke
"They followed me from my home address"... "Do you think you were targeted?" What a stupid question
it's called a leading question to give the interview more gravitas
Once a few people take care of business themselves, perhaps the authorities pay attention to the matter,.
What is police doing ?
Again the Met doing nothing!
Arresting Golliwogs!
They said they know the area, so it would be easy for the police to set up a sting and catch them, except its the MET.
I was sitting in my velomobile one day taking a break. Two men came up in a truck, they jump out and start to pick my velomobile up to steal it with me in it. I had the race hood one. I yelled at them saying someone was in here and they ran back to the truck and sped off.

One of the benefits of mass migration. Didn't happen in the 80s.

its a shame the one thing that brings us love (cycling) turns us into targets for theft. its a shame, and shame the people who attacked this woman for her bike
Well when a bike is worth well over $5000 I understand why, cops need to treat the crimes as a robbery and start doing somethin.

Retired Cat 2 cyclist here. Get off the roads. the days of cycling on public roads are over. its just too dangerous these days. Get a MTN bike or ride rail trails.
The advent of angle grinder resistant u-locks has probably had a hand in this increase of attacks/thefts as it's 'easier' to steal a bike that's being ridden than one that is locked up with one or more of these new locks.
probably, also more secure indoor locking offered around cities like London/Liverpool/Dublin/Paris etc.
Best to ride a cheap bike when you’re out and about. And then the expensive one when you’re in a group.
Or vote for a political party that will fund the police rather than making cuts to public services all the time. 🤔
Better still, change the culture of the country...or is that too late now.
Or when your out on trails or know your roads. Even in the states where I live it’s very uncommon, I try to be vigilant .

You need to make that cycle look cheaper! I bought stickers in Poundland to cover up the logos and name and my cycle is only a pinnacle.
Having a good quality, but extremely ugly looking, bike frame goes a long way. I found one that looks like absolute hell but can still ride good with the right parts.
Just like here in Brazil, we have almost one robbery notice per week on our riders grup

That's why I carry😢
In England you can,t, what is happening to the human race?
Wow I just assumed this was about motorists. Now gangs are coming after us too?!? Sad times
Britain is broke. Inequality breeds this kind of crime.
my bike was stolen twice this year. first time it was violent, 4 guys came and pushed me off, retrieved it without the help of police, as they did nothing since theyre useless. second time though, it got stolen when my mum rode it to work, literally a police station next to the workplace, they didnt even bother getting the security footage. seriously, if any of you think that the police will help, you need to wake up. you should be scared to ride your bike. you need to be alert at all times. ride through back streets, avoid main roads. i stay far away from main roads, i ride through routes that pretty much nobody could think of.
Police do nothing about it for decades.
I had three very expensive bikes stolen in 1 year, they tried to tell me that there was no CCTV on KIlburn HIgh Road , complete lies!
you got jacked or did they break the lock?
this is where riding ratty cheap looking 90s gravel bikes and fixies comes in handy, wearing lycra and having big brand names all over your bike obviously attracts attention
Most of us are forced to seek employment in densely populated areas as there is very little in rural areas.
I’m in USA and we have issues here but this degree of violent bike theft isn’t one of them.
That’s why I never ride on the roads. Always stay on dedicated bike paths separated from the road. Too many psychopaths in tin boxes on wheels.
Interesting nothing about who the gangs are. Wonder why?
we all know they aren't English
Bikers should consider carrying bear spray .
But just think of the amazing array of restaurants diversity brings.
Can you put a covert GPS chip on your bike? If yes, are there any on the market, and do they need regular charging etc?
I'm sure the Tories will blame the EU for this as well
I have cycled enthusiastically all my life and the most I have ever paid for a bike is £500 and I ride about 120 miles per week, currently riding a 1980s steel framed Dawes Super Galaxy for which I paid £150, and my other bike wouldnt fetch £100 on E-bay, and I stress I am a keen cyclist, you can do it on an inexpensive quality bike, loads used on the second hand market, I have never understood quite why people insist on riding bikes costing £10,000 or more, a bike of that value would always have been a target, this is not new, its just that there are far more of these bikes around now aand cars are far harder to steal, I would be amazed if anybody stole my bikes, and 30 years ago I would have been wary about riding a top end bike in London or Birmingham or Manchester too, just dont be so stupid and ride a cheaper less flashy bike, its unecessary in any case, its no different to how its always been, and quite why anybody would want to ride a super expensive bike round and round in circles in Hyde Park I dont know PS I have never had a bike stolen and I am not particularly careful even when riding in Birmingham, and even if my bike was nicked, it would be merely inconvenient and annoying because I am fond of them but they are not worth enough to get too upset about
Yep, beards love their £8k Felts, so do the yoof. My London bikes a tatty Genesis one twenty, reliable, quality, but the yoof isn’t interested in a bike that’s probably worth £200 tops now. There’s absolutely no way I’d be riding a £3k electric Brompton through Hackney or Lambeth.

You've been lucky, that's all (or perhaps don't live in a big city) - I've had 6 bikes nicked through a lifetime of riding cheapish bikes.

Ridiculous that the video article did not explain this properly.

BTW does Riz remember the video I posted to her in 2009 - "...just another road in Suburbia" ?
Hmmm.... What else is going up that could be driving this general increase in violent crime?
Theres that london cyclist who finds car drivers with fogged windows and on their phone when stopped at the light and turns them into police. I wonder if hes still alive.

Why do I get the impression the description of the criminals is deliberately absent in this report? Who are you afraid of offending, BBC? Similar crimes are happening here, in the U.S. A cyclist was hit by a car in New Jersey, then the driver got out of and beat the bicyclist to death. I'm very reluctant to ride a bike anyplace other than designated bike paths. Unfortunately people (usually women) are still harassed on them.
They were male's dark clothes dark hair .
Offending anybody? Lol people that get angry, get road rage and screech at cyclists to “get a car!” look like you.
They are teenagers, so children and a sensitive subject. The sad truth is Google, Apple and Facebook know who these criminals are and have enough data to prevent crimes from occurring, but that wouldn't be good business for them.
This is segment on increasing bike robbery, not crimestoppers. Some of the robbers had already been convicted.
Cyclists and pedestrians need to have the right of way revoked. Wholesale. It has caused a culture of entitlement and general asshole attitude when they're on the road.
I've been yelled at, cursed at, delayed, almost forced to hit, etc from bike riders and pedestrians. So all I can think of when they get his is "it's most likely their fault"
And I don't like being calous towards them. But they caused me to feel this way. I didn't cause it.
