Redbubble FEES (Zen Rant) - Audio Only

  • Redbubble kicked up a firestorm this week by announcing NEW FEES! Yes, they broke the internet by telling artists that there would be fixed fees and tier structures to their stores. In this audio-only podcast, I discuss at length why we are angry and what the are alternatives in a seemingly depressing print-on-demand world.

    I got an email from them, so annoyed at this stupid decision. BUT it made me realize that I rely on RB too much and need to expand to other sites, so maybe it was good to get that push.

    Very nice to hear a less emotional response to this RB PR disaster. I view the whole thing as knee-jerk from them. I decided a few days prior to open an Etsy linked to Printful store which turned out to be very foresightful as yesterday whilst uploading to RB I was suspended for all the incorrect reasons in the standard email they push out. I have appealed but don't hold out much hope. My biggest bugbear is that I have not hit the current payout level and they owe me money that I would like to see in my account. Even if they do reinstate my account I am not sure how much I would do there anymore as I have spent many hours optimizing designs to fit each product to make sure it looks good. You hit the nail on the head with the bots doing the work and they are not very good bots at that. I did fill in the feedback survey in which I gave a very negative response but was not rude, just matter of fact and did not give my username though being logged in my guess is they knew it was me, about 1 hour later I was booted off.

    Thanks for the eloquent and thoughtful response. As an additional thought, I wonder if a move like this will solve the problem of a lot of low-rate designs over the long term. And by long term I mean 2 - 5 years. Regardless, I'm not going to change my practice. I make designs, put them up on mulitple platforms, and will be building an independent site in the near future. If I make $100 or $5 from Redbubble is not a huge concern from me any more. Maybe Redbubble will go out of business. Maybe it will rebuild itself in the next few years to be a better site for everyone. Whatever the outcome, my actions or inactions will not make a difference. For me it is business as usual.

    Hi Zen! For Standard Sellers, the fee is almost 50% . I think RB should find a way to incentivate sales where RB & Sellers and benefited both, not only them, even worse when Standard Sellers are already discouraged due to low or no sales.

Also an excellent point about something for nothing i.e. wanting to make a grand a month when one possesses none of the skills necessary to be a designer/artist. Nice work, thank you for giving us strength.

    Redbubble asked for us to do fan art in a way that their partners license, so I did that last night. I woke up this morning to a ban because of that. All artwork was my own and high quality. Each picture was tagged in the way that the companies asked for. I've never seen a bigger joke of a company 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

    I had a design with the word "Gilead" and they took it down, assuming it had something to do with the Hulu show Handmaids Tale. I tried to explain it did not and Gilead is in the Bible and my design had nothing to do with the show, took several months and they finally put it back up, well after The Holiday Season.

    I listened to this audio from start to finish. It is so refreshing to actually hear someone explain what they feel has taken place and then offer suggestions on what to do about it. No ranting or raving, no name calling, no threats, just good down to earth suggestions. I was about to look into posting some of my art on RB, but between what I have heard on other sites and on yours I have a feeling I really do not need to go there. Why add to one’s already growing headache? I will subscribe to your CZcams channel as I do plan on returning to this particular presentation in order to get the names of some of the places you suggest I go. I also want to think about some other options you presented before making a possible move in that direction. Thanks for making this particular audio presentation. It has sparked an interest in your other works if for no other reason than to see what sells and what might not. I have a feeling I may have a lot of read time ahead of me. Thanks again for it all.

    The reason artist are so up in arms about this is only the Standard Tier is laying the fees, and not only are they the only ones laying the fees, but we also get privileges like the Fan Art program taken away from us. The other thing is the amount they are taking. They already take a huge chunk from the sale of each of our designs. And previously we all understood that, they printed the product, shipped it and dealt with the customers. So we were all happy t o give up that burden for less return. But now they are carving out almost 40% in some cases! But the worst part....the very worst part....is that the tier system as they have laid it out as to what qualifies to this and that tier is complete BS! And this is where Redbubble made the assumption they we artists don’t communicate with each other. Of course we do! We are in FB groups together, we watch CZcams videos and make comments. I make decent sales in RB. It enough to live on but consistent sales. I got stuck in the standard bottom tier. I have a friend who does POD for a living, has been for years and years. She has a shop that makes her $10k a year, she got placed into the standard tier. I talked to several new sellers...6-7 that just opened their shops. Have very few designs and NO sales....none...and got placed in the premium tier. They have out no work into the platform thus far and have no fee. Others have been on for years but their sales are minimum, almost making nothing-premium tier. But yet I know some that doing very well that got Pro tier....that’s the only one that makes sense. So this is what’s passing people off. For me, I will have to double my commission to be able to keep making what I’ve been making on there with this system in place. So how many sales will I make having to do that? Well...I never raise my commission over the standard 20% except on stickers. So we will see. In the end, I. Else I’ve Redbubble slit their own throat on this one.

    Great view on the Redbubble situation. I think they are cutting their own throat but considering their stock price has fallen so much, the alternative might be that Redbubble goes bankrupt in the next 90 days. If RB goes bankrupt then what will the artists have? It feels like a punch in the stomach considering the work to get a store open but it is their playground look what Twitter is trying to charge now. Every year Azon Merch raises prices but if it's profitable you have to just adjust your prices and hope sales continue. Your statement of go to other platforms and keep moving forward is the best advice I've seen out of all the videos posted on the Redbubble fees issue. We all have a choice, piss, bitch and moan or go forward to someplace new. Thanks for the good advice.

    This is such solid advice. As a fine artist growing up, I was always interested in fashion & music. When it came time to provide a living wage for myself I never wanted art to leave the picture- so I began doing screen-print jobs for local bands and graphic design work for small businesses. “How can you serve others with your talents” is always the question I ask myself. PS- I am against all of these megalithic platforms taking the power out of artists hands by convincing them it is the only option. To the contrary- YOU are your only option

    They already reduced artist margins once with a fee increase causing me to adjust prices about a year ago and the day I received this same email 4/19/23 about two hours later right after an upload my account gets suspended/banned with no explanation.
    It was my third year and I had just over 4000 designs and sold as many items as I did the first two years combined that third year and was steadily growing but then the algorithm ( I assume ) suspended my account for unknown reasons and after an appeal there isn't much I can do to get it reinstated so I will never see a return on all my hard work not to mention the time it will take to scrub my social media and videos of any Redbubble links or content. What a nightmare.

    Hey Zen, really appreciated this. I watch a handful of people when it comes to Print on Demand, but I always find myself coming back to your videos here and on Crafty Stax. Speaking of Crafty Stax, I just watched an older video from that channel where you showed examples of what you would do with images from rawpixel. I don't see many videos similar to that where you show examples, unless I haven't seen most of them, but I thought that would be a cool idea for a video series if that's something you'd be open to doing. I know you're all about helping people and sharing your expertise. I know one thing I would like to see examples of is how to use patterns from sites like Creative Fabrica, cause there's only so much you can do with them as they are. Like how would you go about altering them enough to be unique?

    Society6 is starting fees next month too. And they're start up % is half of RBs start up % to begin with I guess but now they will charge you a partial shipping fee. Their PR about this was a lot less bad that RBs because Society6 just said "to avoid lifting the cost of buyers were going to have artists take a cut for shipping" and they made it a small percent based on how big the product is so if you sell a huge heavy product you might have to pay $2 on the shipping and have that deducted whereas if you sell a sicker you have to pay 15 cents of the shipping........ whereas Redbubble has straight up LIED and INSULTED and said "if you are someone who sucks and don't put in effort we're putting you in the worst tier and charging you fees, so that you'll work harder :-) BUT BUT BUT...........when everyone talked the people on the good tier are only people who have had an account for a loooooooong time and made less than $40 and all the people on the bad tier have made hundreds or thousands of dollars because WE'RE the ones that are actually making money to take 37-50% off. So sneaky and deceptive! This is a fact I've seen so many people on Twitter and CZcams saying they have had an account for years and only put up 12 designs and sold one and are in the preium tier and CZcamsrs who made thousands are on the standard tier and myself who made a few thousand in the horrible tier.

  • @FedSher
    @FedSher Před rokem +1

    I'll share my opinion on RB fees, making it clear that I'm pissed off as well about this stupid decision, BUT... I think it still needs a bit of a ''testing time'' to really confirm if this is as stupid as it seems.The point is that... those HUMANS running these huge POD companies, aren't exactly STUPID PEOPLE at all, otherwise they wouldn't have been making millions for more than 15 years. What I'm trying to point out is that whoever is behind this move is willing to make MORE PROFIT, and that can't just LEAVE THE ARTISTS OUT of the process, it really makes no sense. So, if this new decision was made with the idea of using the MONEY that they will make out of these FEES to invest it in a real improvement of the Algorithm and SEO of those stores making sales already taking them to a BOOST... then we could confirm that this was a WISE DECISION, and... you woudn't even have to care about the fee they will take since you'll still make MORE PROFIT THAN BEFORE THE FEES WERE INTRODUCED, so it would be a WIN-WIN situation meaning GROWTH for everyone.
    However, if this is not the case... I can assure that RB would only follow a downhill path from now on, since more and more artists would stop uploading for REAL and that will eventually drive them into BANKRUPTCY (which I kinda hesitate about that being the current situation behind this desperate move as well... but HOPE its all about market grow, as it also makes sense.)
    Basically, be aware of how your STORE behaves in the next 2 or 3 months and this question is going to be ANSWERED. 🤔

    All in all, POD business model is not the best option for an artist. There are other ways to make a living from your artistic activity, maybe not the easiest ways, but if you are truly an artist, it's worth it.
    I understand the people who are making money through POD by making the less effort and not being artists at all will be frustrated, but I think it's not smart enough to rely on the long terms on such business models that favourites the lazy and the parasites.

    After reading the parent company’s minutes or report for their last shareholders’ meeting: profits are down especially in US. Two contradictory statements on these new fees. Put in to a list of how they are addressing the shortfall includes this new fee structure. Further in the doc, states that these new fees on the Standard tier will likely have no significant impact on future profits. They may have panicked and used this to cull thousands of designers who’ll leave. Estimates are a usurious fee of between 17% to 50% off the top of the very modest market-driven commissions. I’m leaving mine as us and spending my 8 to 10 hours a day on my other platforms. Plus joining others And more time on my oil and acrylic paintings and marketing those. Heads up. I have been on RB since 2017 in the heady days of a copyright free for all and made up to 900 a month. Later when they were sued and I cleaned up their trash and I went 90% original since then, my sales have dropped to 200 per month and I taught myself AI and PS and pay an 85.00 a month sub for that. They outsourced their help desk to Mexico and rely on auto BOTS to reply to emails and to run the site. Have you ever tried providing feedback to RB? They only have that tiny box to type in and never ever ever reply. They say their new idiotic tier system is 'data driven' quote by what data? Cloud cookoo land? I pay tax on all sales and these new fees are just NUTS. Many are NOT 'artist' but teens in Asia and Egypt uploading utter garbage to the site. RB created a monster and they now want to back track and become a nuns convent. They got rich and but won't give it up and probably paid some carpet salesman business guru to help them save their site. You will get banned if their BOT sniffs out a key word that it has been told is a copyright. The site is on auto pilot with little human management.

    I appreciate your insights. I was terminated from KDP three times. I appealed each time and was reinstated, until this third time. All related to the same book that was a low content book published the first time and removed - never republished again, but permanently in the KDP system, thus getting flagged again and again. I put MLB in a title, not thinking about its copyright with Major League Baseball. A mistake to be sure, and after acknowledging that and moving on never to sin again, I was very surprised to have the next two years spent building back - making good money at it, only to have it suddenly taken away. (I had been on KDP since 2014 and started with a non-fiction book, later going into low and medium content books.) Through the termination process there was heartbreak, but I did learn things. Continuous effort, diversification, and learning new skills seems to be key to moving forward. I'm now on TeePublic, Creative Fabrica, Etsy, Barnes & Noble Press, and Adobe Stock, doing the best on Etsy and Creative Fabrica . I was terminated the same day I was accepted to Redbubble (very weird) , and not accepted to Amazon Merch, maybe because of the KDP thing? Creative Fabrica is by far the nicest group of folks I've ever delt with as a seller, and I always get a real person when I need customer service help. They are growing quickly and that may change, but for now, it's great. They also allow for any AI CF Spark assets you create to be used for ANY purpose. If you create it (and have a subscription to CF) you can sell it. I especially like using CF Spark for seamless patterns. Fingers crossed for everyone, and thanks again for all your great content. It's very helpful.

      Not sure if it's allowed, but I have a CF account and there's been an explosion of 100s of AI image bundles. Most are very low quality, so if you can upload high quality designs you'll have better luck.

    Hopefully these fees will get rid of the small accounts that blatantly do printscreens of my designs and sell them as their own!

      Accounts that don't sell a lot are on premium and those that do make sales are on standard it's the opposite of what they pretended but they want those that actually work for them to feel bad and work harder while they take 50% it seems

    Why can't you get banned? If someone decides you've infringed their copyright, they can just hit your host with a takedown notice, and your host can take action against your site. I've done it to an online shop using my artwork, after they refused to take my artwork down.

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  Před rokem

      We might have a different definition of getting banned. When you own the domain name, the worst that can happen is your POD supplier can refuse to work with you (rare). More common is they just won’t print that specific design. There is no ultimate internet police that will shut down your website. You can get sued, but no one can legally take away your own webite.

    Not really connected in any way to the fees issue but one remark that you made here made me feel sad. The t-shirts you design for redbubble are not high end products (fair enough) but what's more, you anticipate that many of them will be worn once (for an event or suchlike) then "thrown in the trash". What an utterly depressing and colossal waste of resources! Sadly, I think this approach of constantly chasing calendar / event based niches promoted by most POD gurus (Hogue et al) for views only exacerbates this situation and, ultimately, results in marketplaces such as redbubble being choked with thousands of absolute garbage, 'throwaway' designs a consequence of which is that the quality designs which people might actually want to keep and wear for years are buried under the mass of novelty crap. Then people wonder why POD companies such as redbubble are struggling and desperately scrambling for ways to claw back more profit!

    • @zenwatercooler
      @zenwatercooler  Před rokem

      Yes I definitely appreciate your feedback - I am really speaking only from my experience based on the stuff I sell. I definitely don't think a RB shirt is the same quality as say a higher-end Gelato or Printful shirt. The RB shirt is less expensive and the quality is reflective. So there is something for everyone I guess.

  • @gurutruecrimeguru1405

    FIFTY PERCENT of your current TWENTY PERCENT....it's around 37-50% depending on how much you make a month Watercooler! If you manage to make what would have been $500 a month you will only have to pay 25% but any less you're paying up to 50% of previous commissions in fees. You CAN voice your complaints by how it offers you an option to say each day that you are extremely angry. There also is a thing somewhere on the website where you can give an opinion on this once. I was waiting for you to say something. I don't think it should be contentious at all it is purely terrible for everyone. But yes you're right the only thing that is could be setting up your own shop or changing to another option. I was making a lot for teepublic and they permanently banned me and my 750 designs. My fault for not checking that "Albert Einstein" was trademarked I didn't think that would be a thing. Mea Culpa but it sucks. They know my devices and IP they wont let me have a new store where I show up in search.

  • @gurutruecrimeguru1405

    I enjoy no video, audio only on CZcams because I like to listen while getting tasks done. :-) You haven't looked into how BAD this is though. It's not just 25% of our current commission it's up to 50% it's only as little as 25% if you make $500 a month on Redbubble and I was happily making $60 a month which I thought was pretty good but Redbubble said "no you suck so we're putting you on worst tier, please make your shop nice promote elsewhere and optimise every product." I DO OPTIMISE every single product for every single design. The only thing I don't do is promote because YOU wouldn't fix the Pinintrst button for last five years and sent me an email that basically said "lol not happening ever" when I wrote to you (Redbubble) about it AND posting stuff on twitter didn't do anything and I was doing nicely from organic but I did all the other things that Redbubble said us losers weren't doing. Plus they are liars because even that guy RYAN what's his name that everyone in POD knows..... was put in "fuck you tier" and other CZcamsrs that have made thousands and thousands were also put in "FU tier". Hell even I've made $3000 from Redbubble and Teepublic together before TP banned me too. But I'm in "fuck you" "tier".
