I'm shocked! At around 12:05, referring to the Pocket 3, you uttered the words "the zoom is fine" and said something about no compression - I'm a huge fan of my Pocket 3, but the zoom is not for use unless it's an emergency! It is a simple crop - the choice of sensor was large pixels but no spares, in order to get that low light performance. The Pocket 2 on the other hand used a quad beyer sensor with plenty of spare pixels to enable 4K digital zoom up to a point - but the low light performance suffers. If you have to use digital zoom with the Pocket 3, then do it when editing (assuming you can) where you can change your mind - don't risk degrading the image irrevocably by using the in-camera zoom. Other than that lengthy quibble - great discussion, as usual from your excellent channel!
This channel is my favorite for the Pocket 3! I bought one and look forward to using it on my upcoming Caribbean cruise.

As an ex P2 owner the P3 is exactly what I need....because it's exactly what I personally need !
The people forget, that every camera is created for different reasons and purposes.
I have a small chanel here in CZcams based on my travels around the world.
I don't NEED an action cam because the only thing I do is to walk around the cities where I am.
I don't do action activities or whatsoever.
A traditional camera on a gimbal will literally scare the people on the streets.
Probably is hard to imagine, but in many countries the people are not particularly ,,friendly" when they see you filming on the streets with a huge equipment and a camera on a separate gimbal = everyone can see you from kilometers.
So the Pocket series is THE BEST....for what I AM doing !

Very interesting vlog, VIc. Really enjoyed it. I've got all of these cameras except the iPhone 15 (iPhone 11Pro Max, myself). I was so in love with the ZV-E1, and then I got the Pocket 3. Now I don't know what to do...LOL. I can tell you I used just the Pocket 3 for this week's CZcams vlog shot a night and was totally blown away by the quality of the video it captured. Totally amazing! I'll likely use both the Pocket 3 and ZV-E1 about the same now. We'll have to see. Really enjoyed this video; thanks for posting.
Thanks for the video. Between the Osmo Pocket 3 and the ZV-E1 I have most all of my video needs met. I pair the E1 with the 16-35 f/4 and I'm set. I take lots of bird photography and for that I use the Sony a6700 (great camera for photos and a great value) and the Sony 200-600mm lens. Agreed the Pocket 3 really checks a lot of the boxes and it is my main vlogging camera. Paired with Action 4 for underwater / Rain / Biking, etc they compliment each other well and the footage looks great. Going with something like the ZV-E1 is a little bit better quality, but the larger size, weight as well as being obvious you are filming makes it less desirable. Plus the crop for stabilization and it is still not as good as a gimbal at four time the price takes that out of the running for me.

Vic, How long can the Pocket 3 record on 4k without overheating?
I'm starting a podcast and could really do with another camera and am wondering what the run time is on 4k 10 bit?

what import settings, codecs & color profiles do you use? I bought a Pocket 3 and I love it, but when I try to take advantage of its 10bit capabilities, & import footage into finalcut, it gets complicated...
Hey. I use premiere pro and in most cases ik shooting dlog color profile and I correct it and grade it myself. And everything is shot in 4k
Really like the pocket 3, it ticks a lot of boxes in my personal way of creating content. I will buy it for sure
Relevant in 2024 and beyond most likely based on Pocket 2 history. I'd like to add that DJI did another right by adding timecode support for both the Pocket 3 and Action 4. That sets up the possibility for a quick and efficient multicam shoot easily synced by timecode without having to have a huge kit. That is my favorite feature(I wish that they would add this to their drones). Also important to note the built in support for dual DJI Mic 2 support and DJI Mic 2 support for Action 4 cams too. Very versatile. Can go from "normal" conditions using the Pocket 3 to "extreme" conditions with the Action 4 and use the same mic, again keeping a minimal kit out in the field. The other manufacturers will have to keep up and compete with DJI by implementing built in wireless mic support and timecode support as far as I'm concerned. And as a standalone minimalist video camera for everyday use especially for VLOGs and capturing moments it really is in a class by itself. I have big cameras: Zcam F6, Sony A7R series, Fuji, and small Instago 2, but my everyday carry is the Pocket 3 bc of its versatility/quality. I can choose my larger cameras for paid/planned projects, but rely on just the Pocket 3 to keep things compact without sacrificing quality. Also, I agree with a point you made in the comments about how being able to tell a story isn't dependent on bigger/larger cameras either.

The DJI looks great. It seems to be a blend of a GoPro and ZVE1. Small cameras are so discreet in public. GoPro 11 is ok, but DJI seems like a nicer image.
Hey April. Personally I prefer the pocket 3 image over the GoPro. But the GoPro is a tank in comparison 😅
I disagree with you on the Creator Combo. It's $150 more, but you get the Mic 2, the $49 Wide Angle lens, the $35 bag, the $69 battery handle, and the $16 mini tripod. Not even counting the Mic 2, you get more than you pay for. It's a good deal, especially if you're just starting out.
Then they went and made the Mic 2 work with the Action 4 and your iPhone. Not too shabby in my opinion.
And your Android phone. Well, mine anyway.
You are running into the same issue as me, all the cameras you displayed have different use cases in my opinion. Sadly we all have to have all four IMO. But yes a phone, should reamain a phone, lol. Sadly I can't get ride of action cameras, but I refuse to use them outside of action sports. I would add, if you don't have a mic I think the creative combo is actually a good deal personally. 100% agree the Pocket, in regards to vlogging, a run and gun, easy simple, small, nothing better right now. But boy is it delicate, and scary for someone like me with ham hands. Not really fair to compair it to ZV-E1, that is a beast of a camera! But overall agree with you. Well done!

Hey. Usually on a local marketplace or one of the online secondhand sites on this side of the pond. You do get more for it than the Apple trade in by selling it elsewhere but obviously it’s a bit of a pain to do it at times and there’s always tyre kickers 🤣

@@VicBarry I am currently assessing the Pocket 3 V Hero 11/12 for vlogging when making my vids but seems fab. The A7CR is not for videos but for photography where it is blowing my mind with performance, low light noise much better than my A7R4 despite the same 61mp sensor. And as I like railway photography the Train recognition autofocus is a nice touch. And of course very very small.

Pocket 3 is just too fragile and for that reason alone, I’ll take even the Action 4 over it. As you state, it isn’t about the camera anyway. Some of the best things I’ve seen have been shot on what most here would consider not a “real” camera. I don’t care what you shoot on. Just make a good video.

Ha. Interesting comment. Out of curiosity what do you define a real camera as?
@@VicBarry any camera with a removable lens, a removable battery, and a real mic jack. Anything else is just a compromise camera. Don’t get me wrong, I got plenty of compromise cameras myself. But a real camera, at a minimum, should have the three things I mentioned.
@Panotaker technically you’re not wrong. Totally take the point. But whatever tells the story. Cameras are only tools. Having a “real” camera doesn’t mean for one second you can tell a better story than someone who hasn’t.
The Pocket 3 is a great addition to any kit. If you do run and gun videography like I do, the ability to just whip out a mechanical gimbal that shoots real 4k is a game changer. It’s not a competition.
I disagree… I own a C70, 1 R7, 2 - pocket 6k pros and 1 - fx30, all “real cameras” and I still bought 2 osmo pocket 3’s…
I believe MANY people that are buying it, probably also own “REAL CAMERAS”
I see it as a great addition to whatever set up I’m using for that project… I know it’s gonna allow me to get a lot more BTS…
GoPros suck I'm my opinion. So many issue on my 11.
What issues did you have with the 11?
@@VicBarry overheating super easily and very wonky stabilization in anything that wasn't super bright outdoor sunlight. The menu and mounting system is also old fashioned and clunky. I'm not a fan of that camera.
No. It's not even the best vlogging camera of 2023. It's got a tiny sensor and a 20mm focal length which can't be changed. It really needs a telephoto option of some sort. I dont want to hear its too small, smartphones use telescoping zoom lenses in small cameras. Best camera of 2023 IMO is the Panasonic S5II, especially at its sale price now under $1,700.
First define the use case, then start using the word "best" - otherwise it's meaningless. To understand the lack of zoom, you need to take into consideration the delicate nature of the gimbal motors, and have a look at the design of filters for the Pocket 3 and its wide angle adapter - very, very light and thin, as is required by the physics.
@@Ozpeterwell pretty much any of the Sony ZV cameras would be a better option for vlogging and content creation. Much larger sensor and ability to switch lenses alone give them a huge advantage over the Pocket 3 and for right around the same price on sale right now.
Have the pocket 3 and GoPro 12. Pocket 3 is great but not for mountain biking, rough hiking and strenuous activities you can't beat the GoPro, the pocket 3 would never last as rough as I am with the GoPro, but for everything else love the pocket 3.
Yeah. It's the best portable video camera that's not a smartphone. I'd say it's worth a buy if you're primarily gonna be filming around but not be too professional about it. It's literally a point and shoot video camera will less frills. Not saying it's fragile but more like less durable. Otherwise, for what it is, it's awesome.
