Inspired by the New York Times best-selling memoir, Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will to Survive by Stephanie Land, MAID follows the story of Alex, a single mother who turns to housecleaning to - barely - make ends meet as she escapes an abusive relationship and overcomes homelessness to create a better life for her daughter, Maddy. Seen through the emotional yet humorous lens of a desperate but determined woman, this series is a raw and inspiring exploration of a mother’s resilience.

Binged the whole thing, I'm telling ya'll this is best show on Netflix since maybe Ozark. Margaret Qualley is excellent, she better win some sort of award for this, best acting I've seen in a TV show in years. I highly recommend this, it's not just some sad sappy show. There's no corny dialogue, the pacing of the show is great, it's not too slow. There's a lot of suspense, intrigue, and if you've ever been in some of these types of situations, they make it very relatable. And honestly felt like I learned a lot in this show. Very well written, great cast, some predictable parts here and there. But the entire point is how predictable a lot of these scenarios in the show are. Good job, Netflix.

one major thing the show did a tremendous job of was showing how the cycle of abuse and trauma happens with alex and her mom, the parallel between the scene when maddy hid in the cupboard when sean threw a vase at alex and the scene when alex hid in the cupboard when her mom got hit... HIT ME LIKE A TRAIN such an insane parallel that was done so well

  • @TheOtherGuy021
    @TheOtherGuy021 Před 2 lety +32

    Really great performances on this
It’s very realistic, no huge events, a slow paced series
    No real villain, just life
Even Sean who is clearly abusing emotionally his wife has a reason behind on why he is drinking, and you can see he really loves his daughter
    Very well written show
Could have been a 4-5 episodes mini series or a movie but not complaining here
    It’s TV at its finest

I’m not a maid, I’m not a parent, I’m not a woman, I’m not a white woman, but I felt so much empathy and shed tears of sadness for Alex and Maddie. I tried to binge it but I had to take breaks because while it was never violent, the sense of hopelessness in some of the episodes was triggering. I did finally get through it and by the end I was shedding tears of joy. I was glad that not everyone was depicted as one-dimensional character; Alex, the mom, the dad, Sean, Regina, Nate, all were flawed and there were bright lights in each of their own stories. Sean, specially was wonderfully acted, his emotional abuse was very frustrating and you can see that he himself was caught up in a cycle of his own abuse and trauma. While his actions were monstrous, there is a deeply flawed human being in there. I don’t know that I felt sorry for Sean but I felt frustrated, too, by his own imprisonment in a cycle of poverty and abuse. But ultimately this is Alex’s story and whomever this actress was, she was just right. Brilliantly performed and made you want to root for her. I had realized that in the earlier parts of the series, much of the response from Alex was this shell shocked type of reaction. The second time Alex ended up in the shelter, when she cried, it was like all that weight was lifted. The damn had broken and let loose a new direction. I was worried that we were going to get a not-so-happy ending perhaps the abuse taking a fatal take but thank goodness that we were treated to a healthier take. Although, it wasn’t the ending I wanted for the mom, I am relieved that Alex, and maybe even Sean, parted towards light and healing.

I can't say I exactly binged the series. I'd watch 2 episodes and take a break. It was just too heavy and emotional to watch more at a time. Watched 2 or 3 a day and just finished it and this is the best Show I have seen all year. And, I have watched a ton of stuff!! It's difficult for me to put a rating on something that had me so emotionally invested but if

I found this show at a real great time. Yes, it's very heavy and can be emotionally draining, I found it more cathartic than anything. While I'm not in the same situation, I'm still dealing with having recently losing my job and subsequently my apartment and having to move back home to my mom. And in the week that I've been there, I've learned so much through family that I'd estranged myself from all the lies, manipulations, and mistreatment my mother put my brothers and I through. A couple months before I lost my apartment, I finally broke up with m boyfriend after he tried to force himself on me while he was drunk. For over a year, I put up with it because, while i wasn't financially dependent on him, he did help me out of a couple monetary pits I found myself in and I was scared to figure out how to do it alone.
Idk I can talk about this show all day. What I can say is it reignited a fire in me I thought was long dead. I still have some pretty hard times ahead of me. I'm very much in the thick of it. But this show has helped me recognize the shortcomings of not only others, but myself. And that doesn't mean anything but we're all human with the capacity to change, grow, and forgive.
    Yall have a blessed one

I left my abuser a few times, with new born preemie twins. We lived in Pensacola, I had zero family there. My mom lives in Kansas she has ms. My dad was headed to prison after stealing from the museum he was a curator at. Went to the regular shelter once, then the women's shelter. Ended up living in the project's. He came back, if I let him stay my kids would get taken. When I try to make him leave I get a black eye. Finally left on a plane to Nebraska (home). He soon followed . Beat me up in my grandmother's basement, she put me out. Went to the women's shelter in Omaha. They said I would have to go back to the project's. So I left to the shelter in Lincoln with another baby on the way. Been here struggling ever since. Went to college, got my bachelor's. But living with PTSD is hard. People knock on my office door and I jump! If I make too much money my kids lose daycare and Medicaid.

Not in a bad way as far as writing or acting, just the subject matter. Keeping 12 step programs in mind there were so many places where kept thinking ..."no don't believe him/her, don't do it". Overall I thought it was very well cast and acted.
On a side note: I had no idea that was Billy Burke. I knew he looked familiar, but couldn't think of the actor's name. I didn't want to scour IMDB while watching the series. = ) Great review. My first time watching your channel. ♥

The acting is really good and the story itself intriguing, the flashbacks and her little daydreaming is incorporated beautifully buuuuuuut some of Alex's behaviour and decisions make me dislike her character multiple times during the show!!! Like leaving her daughter with her unstable mom,not answering her phone so many times, sleeping outside/in a mold infested apartment with her daughter and not accepting help she's offered, inviting that tinder dude into the house she was cleaning...
Overall i enjoy it a lot,the acting is amazing,it's just some aspects in the story I find lacking.

I’m like on episode 5 or 6 and this show is driving me a little crazy. Some things are very exaggerated maybe some is for humor and even though the main character is a good mom to a extent, I think she is too prideful and I’m sorry when you have a child all pride should be thrown out the window. she would only let people help her if they asked multiple times. I’m not even a mother but if I was one I would let myself be embarrassed before having my child sleep in a car or on the floor when there was someone I knew that if asked would help me out even if temporarily. I know I’m supposed to be rooting for the main character but I’m not feeling her. So far this show has been painting Alex as if she’s this star mom and poor victim of everything. she could have made better voices to protect her daughter then her pride.

I like this series a lot, personally I find the Mother to be just as if not more emotionally abusive as someone as her boyfriend or father is portrayed to be.
This is assuming he didn’t actually hit her mother, they make it seem in the flashback that he was aggressive and angry although she says “hit you” when recalling the memory. The mother doesn’t confirm nor deny. This character has shown in many scenes to be incoherent in dialogue . I wouldn’t say you can sum up no real response to a confirmation.
I don’t understand how someone who behaves like the mom can be summed up as misdiagnosed bipolar, eccentric and whacky but ultimately forgivable. As opposed to someone whose mental struggle is aggressive and angry is just lumped in w/ the physically abusive individuals. As someone who grew up with one of each my “eccentric, misdiagnosed bipolar” parent has left scars far deeper than the loud aggressive parent who was actually capable of having concern for someone other than themselves ever did.
This incredible young woman has no problem with attempting over and over to redeem her mother with no evidence of change or growth from her. Somehow it’s safer to keep contact with her and stay in the same house with albeit temporarily. While someone aggressive in nature such as her father, who has shown massive amounts of sustained growth is just forever irredeemable.
If emotional abuse is truly abuse “it is” and we would like it to be treated as such. I think we should be careful not to pick and choose what forms of it qualify and are ultimately worthy of eventual forgiveness. We should be cognizant of all forms while showing equal willingness to show forgiveness after proven mental progress, healing and growth is displayed.

God doesn’t want anybody in hell because He loves us, but you must understand why we deserve hell and why those who refuse to live under His authority will go there. He gave us the law (Ten Commandments) not to make us righteous, but rather to show us our sin (Romans 3:20). We’re not sinners because we sin, but rather we sin because we’re sinners. Sin is the nature of our flesh that we are born with due to the sin of Adam in the garden. For someone to be justified before God they have to be sinless. We’ve all sinned (Romans 3:23), and the the law demands death for those who sin (Romans 6:23). God is righteous, so He must punish our sin, which is what He did through His Son Jesus Christ on the cross. Jesus is Holy and sinless, yet He received our sin when He died on the cross, so that we can be righteous before God (2 Corinthians 5:21). When He died on the cross, He said “It is finished” (John 19:30), which means He paid the full price for all of your sins (past, present, and future) to be forgiven. He was buried and rose again from the dead. God will forgive anybody who puts their full trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation. We aren’t saved based on our good deeds, but only by the grace of God (Ephesians 2:8-9). His precious blood that He shed is the only reason why we can be forgiven of our sins (Hebrews 9:22). If you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe that God raised Him from the dead, then you’ll be saved (Romans 10:9). You are born-again with the Spirit of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17), and are not only legally justified before God, but also are accredited His righteous (Romans 4:24). Believers live for Christ now, so get to know Him through His Word. I recommend reading the book of Romans and the gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), and watching Pastor Joseph Prince’s online videos!

Not a fan. Not happy with the empathy card everyone pulls on this mom who put her daughter in multiple dangerous situations. That black mold thing pissed me off! I’ve been homeless been threw things with my kids. The day I saw black mold and my daughter having a bad reaction you best believe I would go stay with my father even if I did not like him it’s better then my daughter possibly dying. Then bringing a stranger into that women’s house. She drank alcohol knowing she could be Tested and kicked out. I don’t understand why she didn’t get in the restaraunt industry. I mean her character was made out to seem like she is innocent but she was not, she was ignorant and constantly had this deer in the headlights look. This was not realistic at all.

Like you're telling me the same doll you put your daughter in danger searching for, you could have just bought at the store down the road in the first place?!
