- Mr. Qi is a creepy blue dude that seems to always have an eye on you. Also, is he Bo Burnham? And why does he care so much about the farmer? How did he know Grandpa? Did he have something to do with Joja? The colors do match...

What’s hilarious about me and the Skull Cavern challenge was that I didn’t use any staircases. I just didn’t see the point in them so I waited until the luckiest possible day with the rabbit foot token and ate the magic rock candy. Barely mined anything and only used bombs and went down ladders or holes. It was my first save file and I didn’t even know Mr. Qi said anything different until my brother told me about it. So yeah finding that room with this dude I’ve never seen before was a shock.
the mark of a chad.
This comment radiates sigma male energy
Does rabbits foot actually increase your luck?? I didn’t know that
@@dreamer_drmr I think they were refering to the charm you get that increases your luck by following the directions in the secret note (20 I believe) and giving them a rabbits foot
When I finally beat the caverns I didn’t use staircases on the last 5 or so floors. I made it to 100 with the good dialogue and only found out later that there was an alternate lol
My theories about Qi finally come in handy woohooo
My main theory is that Qi reached ultimate perfection in his life and now just spies on everyone and looks for a successor of his work. That's when the player come in ( I guess as a grandchild of a deceased friend ). I think Qi sees you as his successor also because you have the power to know everything too. Like everyone scheduels, favourite gifts, what to do in every season, what to grow to gain lots of money. That's the "spark" he talks about. Even if you're just reading the wiki, you're still kind of spying on everyone with scheduels and everything.
I think I would tell like way more if I knew how to describe my thoughts haha
Nice! He likes you because you're also a very creepy voyeur lol.
Dude that’s exactly what I was thinking 😳 you are awesome
Both Mr. Qi and the farmer are very voyeuristic, it makes a lot of sense!
so reading the wiki is canon?
@@axelfirekirby extradimensional influence perhaps is cannon as magic spirits or something share knowledge to the farmer, so kinda.
You salute the flag of capitalism as you exit your billion dollar estate
Me who gives all my crops away to make the village like me: "you guys are getting paid?"
haha me 😂
I did some thinking in the shower but another possible theory is he is a physical incarnation of yoba just messing around.
Yoba is a cruel god then!
2 year old comment but i agree on this
The Yoba Symbol is straight referred up as "The Vessel", maybe Mr.QI is like Jesus, but instead of being both father and child, Yoba would "possess" someone they find worthy, or perhaps someone they prepare? Like Mr.Qi does
You started talking about how we always wanna please Mr.Qi and i legit went "c'mon man! I have daddy issues!"
No shame! Live your best life. Tell the man to get lost!
Now we need someone in the game for my mommy issues

Is Mister Qi the player’s dad at this point?
To me I always saw Mr. Qi as someone who had started as a farmer the same way the player did, played through the entirety of the game “stardew valley” and has now sorta transcended it to help other farmers.
This is actualy what i think too
I like to think it’s a bit Matrix-y and Mr Qi is directly communicating with us- the player- rather than our character. Like I think the perspective that we watch our player in is what he sees on the screen in his walnut room and that’s how he knows about EVERYTHING we do. He seems almost like a God? Maybe Mr Qi is supposed to represent ConcernedApe lmao, like he’s the “creator” of this little world. Like I mean all the odd fantastical things in the valley such as the junimos and the wizard and the enchanted tools and obliesks, it’s all extremely out of place in an otherwise normal world. He very much seems to break the 4th wall lol
My point is that the entire game is exactly that- but in the game itself. It’s fun to think about
Wake up, Farmer? I dig it!
So Mr. Qi is Yoba?
@@sofiacardozo4146 I guess you can look at it that way yeah
Like Monika from ddlc?
"he knows what you and your cousin alex has been getting up to and he is.. *disappointed*" damn near killed me with 1 line
The “you made spreadsheets” part….hit a little too close to home. Have a sub.
We've all been there! No shame!
Oh, how I miss being 7. I just didn't see the point in trying to do such. And I had a lot of fun. Google existed, but I didn't use it.
I love how they both go "we are proud of you!". Makes it feel weirdly like a couple, makes me happy.
😳🤔
Wait, is Mr. Qi is the player’s father???
He is my favorite sugar daddy. He brings in the big cash 🤣.
Anything you say, Mr. "Sugar Daddy" Qi!
I'm glad someone finally addressed how weird the farmer and Qi's relationship actually is... Also sorry for the rant I've invested way to much time in thinking about Qi...
I mean I like Qi, he's one of my favorite NPCs and I'm always down to hear him tell me how good of a job I did, but I always got this feeling when reading his dialogue that while he was helping the farmer in a sense, I mean he did give them money and the ability to get really good items, he very much looked down on them and was more just kind of pushing them to do whatever he wanted either for his own amusement, to test how far they were willing to go just because he told them to or or to influence them into becoming someone more like him with his values on life and especially reaching and striving for perfection.
Like how he constantly called them "kid" rather than their name and specified not to eat the gems they got from him. Might be nothing but I always took it as him pushing the farmer down a notch, you're the kid, he's the adult, you listen to him and do what he says.
Or how no matter how many times the farmer spoke to him at his casino, met him in weird places or even in the ending he never really revealed anything important about himself, why he did what he or how he did it. Which could be interpreted a lot of way from him not thinking you were worth knowing, him not even considering telling or him or even him using the whole mysterious thing to keep bringing them back to him and his casino.
Or the random tasks he has the farmer do in the beginning just to talk to him. The others after made more sense in a way, he gave you money to get to level 25 of the skull caverns, a health boost for getting to level 100 and you get Qi gems and items for completing his quests but what was up with putting a rainbow shell in box or radishes in the Mayor's fridge? Just to meet him? Why? Was it a test, was he just being odd, did he just want to see how ridiculous he could get with his request and have the farmer will do them?
Or his constant hammering in of perfection and striving to reach ridiculous goals. Motivational yes, but why? The only thing I can guess is because he wants to lead the farmer down the path he's taken even if it is from a bit of a distance. He even says if you keep doing what you're doing you might just end up like him some day... Or who knows maybe he was just friends with your Grandpa and wants to see you succeed and all this is just speculation.
Also can we talk about the entire iridium snake milk scene for a second? The farmer is clearly nervous when they find him down there to the point he has to actually tell them to come closer and even then they stand a good distance back from him. Then he just tells them to drink some random purple liquid in a jug he made for them, no explanation for what it does and they just... Go along with it after a second of hesitation. Sure it boosts health but they didn't know that and he sure wasn't planning on telling them from the look of it. This who scene basically sums up their entire relationship to me.
Also yeah you're right I just went to the 100th floor because I knew he'd complement my character. Guilty as charged.
Mr. Qi is so interesting! Some good info in here. The milk scene really is unnerving....
I always assumed Qi was a wizard. But a wizard who was pretty much the opposite of Rasmodius. Maybe they're brothers? Dum Dum DUM!
Like Rasmodius comes off like the classic "I'm a magical being, that makes me superior to humans, but that superiority comes with responsibility so I have to watch out for the lesser beings, but still, I must keep my distance from them less something horrible happen".
Qi on the other hand fulling embraces human life by making a casino and brushing shoulders with "normies" all the time. Even going so far as to use his magic to dote on humans he thinks are especially neat, like the player.
Mr.Qi introduce you to the power of iridium and radioactive ore. Isn't that two things are very dangerous? And we are watering our farm with that. It's in every food we sold and people are eating it.
For real! I'm watering my crops with nuclear powered sprinklers!
I think your theory is not that farfetched. Linus has plenty of money if you take into consideration the many requests on the town board and the fact that those are some of the better payments. Grandpa keeping watch over your progress on the farm is a weird thing for a spirit to care about in the afterlife. And Qi's watch over literally everything you do (even how many steps you take), is a pretty obvious telling sign (ignoring the part where we all want to please him anyways - Stardew Valley is good therapy, y'all) of his end-goal.
Well he has to count your steps so he can set the weather and you luck for the next day correctly :D
Yeah, my theories tend toward Qi being a more powerful wizard that keeps everyone in the valley immortal, but let his friend leave and pass because Grandpa asked. I've got reasons... mostly because of the cavern writings, but it's mostly just because I think it's the most fun thing to think
The player’s relationships with Qi is something like a little kid telling their father the contest they’ve won at school and gets really happy when they got praised and want to achieve more to make him proud.
6:55 - there's something funny about this line after you've heard of the phrase "magic is just science we haven't discovered."
maybe Mr. Qi is magic.
Pretty much! I was going for Clarke's third law. "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
Bruh the Alex part oml.
Gotta explain that to our children soon.
I feel like Mr. Qi isn't as bad as your theory suggests. He's definitely weird and can be creepy at times (the fact that hes always watching bothers me the most) but I feel like he is akin to Linus in the sense that he discovered the world had things to show him. Unlike Linus, who seeks to understand the world and to be at one with it, Mr. Qi seeks the thrills of life and needs a constant fix. His resources probably come from his casino (we see many important clients, such as the fortune teller and the governor), and he singles the player out because of all the initiative the player takes. Additionally, in a world where fortune tellers are known to be able to predict luck, magical creatures are theorized to exist, some even are proven to exist, and where the average joe can craft a totem that WARPS THEM around the place, it makes sense that Mr. Qi just has access to some simple magic that lets him commune with the dead. It may also be Grandpa who is the one communicating rather than Mr. Qi reaching out, as Grandpa does this with the player.
You said we always want to please Qi and I remembered how the first thing I bought in the walnut room was his hat
I demand more tinfoil
I'd also like to see more on what the playerbase thinks of each character, like with marnie
Oh, there's tinfoil. I just think we might need to balance it!
When I hit 1000, which should be soon(!) I should be able to involve some polls. Or did you mean more like the Google searches? Because I'll admit, that definitely made me chuckle!
I always figured mr. Qi was named after the 'Master Key System' (book) a kind of early 'The Secret'.
i’ve been loving these videos! the lewis one was SO good
Thanks for letting me know! It's hard to top that Lewis one because his stuff is just so juicy!
It's a good theory! I'm pretty sure that Linus once mentioned something about living in a city when he was younger and probably that he was quite wealthy, but he decided to escape from that life. That's very interesting, it fits perfectly.
Just found this series and binged it. It's great! Can't believe you dont have more subs.
Glad you're enjoying it! I'm hoping we'll continue to pick up speed!
4:55 In my first and only play through I didn't know he existed; I just got the quest after beating the Mine and just did it fully normally cus I didn't wanna use all my stone lol
and I'd probably do the same again cus' screw Qi and his walnuts
Hilariously, in my perfection game I never automated petting my cows and rabbits. I just enjoyed walking over to the pasture every morning and giving each of them a pat on the head for being such good girls.
I also kept a little patch of soil for me to water each morning and grow extra crops that weren't my automated Ancient Fruit farm. You know, for when I wanted to grow some parsnips or maybe a batch of wheat. Honestly I'm probably a little bit odd in that I enjoyed having the little chores each morning before I made my rounds around town or the island.
I would feel like I was abandoning my animals if I didn’t pet them myself every day and I’d worry about the nutrition and survival of others if I just made an ancient fruit winery. I also just enjoy it! So no you’re not the only one with those sentiments :)
Must pet every rabbit every single day!
Seeing as Qi looks young, he could known gramps as a mentor and gave him that push to do stuff. Qi could have had rich distant parents, and after he did something bad to get their attention, was sent to a little farm in stardew as punishment. He also met some friends there, Linus and Rasmodius, and watched over us as an ode to someone he looked up to. As for the money? I’m not sure. I dont think he owns Joja, doesn’t have that vibe, but might own a tech giant like Microsoft, in which he covers his identity like a lot of millionaires.
I love the mini rant making fun of “self made entrepreneurs” and those that claim that they “pulled themselves up by their bootstraps”.
By the way the phrase is meant to signify that it’s impossible to do things by yourself (as it is impossible to LITERALLY pull yourself up). It is not meant to signify that working hard by yourself is some kind of accomplishment, it’s meant to signify that you are a fool.
Pulled myself up so hard my bootstraps broke and now I need new ones. Not only did I not succeed, I'm worse off for not seeking help.
Not that I'm here to make social commentary or anything.
i like your theory of Mr. Qi but idk I've always had this theory that Mr. Qi and grandpa were like childhood friends and then meet the others in your theory later on in life so because I think they were childhood friends who were still in touch until his death grandpa probably asked Mr. Qi to over his offspring and probably guide them to think outside the box like he did in the mine as for how Mr. Qi was there when we get to all perfect ending I think it was probably magic done by the wizard but anyway I really enjoyed the vid can't wait to see who you dive into next
I wouldn't be surprised if they were just friends! It would make a lot more sense and honestly life usually isn't as ridiculous as my theory. But mines fun lol! Glad you enjoyed it.
@@Leapalot nah i don't think your theory ridiculous like you said it fun and though it probably not true it still interesting to hear about and your reasoning for it
You’re quickly becoming one of my favorite SDV youtubers, keep up the good work!
Thanks so much! Glad to hear it!
My first play through I did things “the right way”. My second play through I used SO MANY mods. One mod I use is adding an elevator to the Skull Caverns, just like the one in the starter mine. You still get the good cutscene with Mr Qi if you use the elevator and I think that’s funny
i've had many theories about mr. qi, but at least two tie to the chance that mr. qi met grandpa when he was a very small child, and that grandpa, with a thriving farm that he sadly had to leave soon due to growing old and sick, inspired mr. qi to achieve something similar ("i made a decision early in life that i would become extraordinary")
one of the theories was that maybe grandpa is related to mr. qi in some way. perhaps qi is a distant cousin of the farmer or whatever, and when he heard that his cousin was coming to grandpa's farm, he decided to pay close attention since the farm meant a lot for him too when he was a kid. and obviously it didn't take long for him to realize the farmer not only was slowly bringing grandpa's farm back to its former glory, but that they also are the literal backbone of stardew valley (only the farmer completes billboard requests and they're the one to restore the broken bus, clear off the boulder close to the mines, give people access to ginger island so they can relax there for hours doing nothing while the farmer is likely still working their ass off...... i really could go on)
the farmer is the succesor of the man that made qi decide to achieve perfection in his own life, and the farmer is quite literally the only person in the valley that's really "worth it", so to say, so of course mr. qi would grow very curious about the farmer's every action, and push them to keep being great because he knows in his own experience that excellence is possible if you try hard enough...
i theorize that he first learned that the farmer was coming to stardew valley through the wizard (like you said, mr. qi seems to be acquaintanced with magic in some way), through welwick who probably heard it from the wizard, or through grandpa's ghost himself? not sure exactly how that would work, but at this point its possible i guess
To me he just seems to be one of those types of people who have their ways of knowing things all around. He has his hands in so many things that he has more money than he knows what to do with so he uses it to entertain himself by making sure those around him have more interesting lives. Could he be a joja CEO? Possibly, but it seems that would likely be a very small part of his life, like how you know he owns the club in the desert but you only see him standing there, watching as others he deems interesting enough go about playing games, buying items and likely losing tons of money at the slots. At this point in his life he's just there to make sure stuff stays interesting around Stardew valley in little ways
There's a theory that resmodius, Linus and Mona AKA m.Jasper for adventures together. I'd be so curious if this theory could somehow work into the one from your video.
I've seen that. Like the iceberg stuff? I think it would fit pretty easily into my weird little headcanon.
A minor alteration to this theory I think could be possible given the blue skin, Qi could be a conduit for some spell/technology to bind the grandfather's soul to the valley. You as the offspring can see them because the familial similarities mean the technology affects you slightly, and Qi can interact with him because he is the conduit. In theory the grandfather could be there to spy on the competition between Pierre and Joja and report back anything that could help Qi and the player.
I did use ladders, simply because I knew he wanted me to do it without ladders.
i love these videos! your channel is super underrated and it’s clear you put a lot of work into it and i’m excited to see what you put out next:) keep up the good work
Thank you!!
Mr. Qi when he's not running Joja: Hey baby, wanna drink my "milk?"
lol I literally brought 99 staircases to the Skull Cavern and used about 87 of them
love the series!!!
Good for you! I've done both, and yeah... It's cool to say you've done it. But you really don't get anything extra and who cares how Mr. Qi feels about using staircases!
This is a great series! Can’t wait to see more. Definitely subbed so I don’t miss them!
Glad to hear it!
He see’s great potential for us to take over his legacy
Love your channel, Can’t believe you only have 700+ subscribers you deserve way more
Maybe one day! I only had about 120 at the beginning of September, so we're definitely climbing! Thanks for checking things out!
No shot is the direct descendant of one of the founders working behind a computer desk. They'd have a managerial position at least
"He knows what you and your cousin have been getting up to"
Uh huh, divorce
I was confused by the desert map for a moment until I remembered I've been playing expanded for the last few weeks
i realy like this series!! awesome job :D
Loving this series dude, keep it up, you deserve way more subs than you've got
Thanks! I think we're picking up speed so that's exciting!
I always thought that mr Qi is just concerned ape
That's a real possibility! Probably more likely, but maybe not as fun for me.
I cannot WAIT for more!!!! I love these!!!
Should have another one this week!
Lowkey onto something there with that theory.
Wait a minute... Did Mr qi kill grandpa by giving him too much anaconda milk? The plot thickens.
mr qi is daddy, if he wants me to join joja he could have said so at the beginning and i'd do it, why does he love to make everything more complicated? 🙄
He's just letting you run free for a few years. Gotta get all that pesky friendship out of your head before you can settle in and take control of the world!
Daddies just love making everything harder for us, typical 🙄
I know this video isn't about that, but I too loved the challenge of Qi's Fruit. When the quest first spawned for me, I had 7 days left to do it (and failed), but the 2nd time it spawned, I had 14 days and it was such a fun challenge to complete. I think I barely made it to 500, but the process was awesome.
Anywho, watching to the end! I know it helps feeds the algorithm :)
Just subbed bro.
Love your channel
Thanks!
i think Qi is just a guy wich is a business man that owns multiple casinos across the world of stardew valley and it also bieng a mega corporation
Theories I have: Mr Qi is a ghost himself just like grandpa. It's prety obvious to me he isn't exactly real or corporeal (anymore), popping up in the most weird places. Having items you're not supposed to have, or him, him being able to watch the entire town from the comfort of his coconut room, it just screams magical.
And it's very much possible that grandpa and mr qi had a friendship. But to throw linus in there is a bit of stretch.
Could also be that he is the personification of your own ambition. Grandpa wanted you to make something out of the farm and yourself, mr qi challenges you to be your best, that's why they show up side by side when you reach perfection.
Haha oof, definitely called out by the 100 floor challenge. I always do it without ladders just to get the dialogue, man, what a sucker I've been.
Player using 10 ladders: good job being so skilled!
Player using literally one more: you cheated.
Another theory that I think why Mr.Qi cares about us is that he is actually our father. We don't really know much about our past only that we have a Grandfather who gave us the farm, we worked at a Joja office building, and we have a Mom that occasionally writes to us. But we never hear anything about our father no letters from him and our Mom never mentions him. That could also explain the close connection Mr.Qi and Grandfather has.
The parent who sends you letters is based on your gender selection nat character creation. If you're a man you get letters from mom. If you're a woman you get letters from dad. (and he sends cash instead of food lol)
@@Leapalot I mostly play the male character so I didn't know it changed.
I saw a 100% playthrough here on CZcams before I’d gotten very far in my own save files, and acquired a strong distaste for Mr. Qi and his “spark” thing. Although there are also other reasons that 100% hasn’t thus far interested me personally, I’ve never chosen to put a battery in that lockbox.
Uggghhhh!! Why do I watch these theory videos!?! I know I'm really gullible when something seems to makes a lot of sense! And your videos make a lot of sense!! Good job, man.
See you tomorrow for Clint. 👀
I hope 1.6 will give us a lot more lore about him.
That would be really neat, but it doesn't sound like there will be another huge overarching update. It's more likely that we just get more quality of life stuff.
I feel like Qi is the farmers grandma
I seriously expected you to have more subscribers, well here's another one! It's not much but I hope it helps!
Much appreciated!
he's obviously Grandpa's husband and after they reached perfection and grandpa died he ascended to become a deity of some sort to see if anyone else could reach perfection like he and your grandpa did together. Silly walnut man in his gay little hat
I like to think Mr Qi is God.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
He’s a previous farmer who had another previous farmer to help him and the last time you log off your farmer becomes the new Mr Qi of that world. Reaching Mr qi status allows your character to figure out his entire world is a game and he can manipulate it to make life for the next farmer easier
This is my favorite Qi / Joja theory!
Haha! This was so good, I'll have to watch it a second time! (Mostly cus some of it went over my head 🤣)
My personal Mr Qi theory is that he's just some dude who really freakin' likes to screw up my end-game plans.
But, damn, some of those rewards are sweet.
that video was a masterpiece, god damn. I'm doubtful this was the creator's intention, but I think this just speaks to the ingenuity and artistic mindfulness that it takes to interpret media on this level - drawing such a beautiful story from mostly nothing. Good CZcams Vido,
i was so mad that Mr. Qi called me out with the staircases
This is my 1st time hearing about this theory and I’m so confused.
That's fair. These are conclusions I've come to but I haven't ever posted about them. Plus, most people are probably like.... This is dumb. Lol
Before i thought mr qi was yoba in disguise or something now i just think he is a ghostly being
But that's just a theory
A game theory, truly
I love this series 🥳🎉
Thanks Emily!
Awesome and cool! ^_^
i mean
i always jsut assumed mr qi was a sorta representation of concernedape. a sort of... magical guy that makes sense for concernedape to do stuff through
But Mr Qi is in the chat when you do /qi
And when you change your name at the wizards place on PC to an item id theirs a chance for the chat to show Mr qi being dissatisfied that you didn't play fairly
I was sooooo close to getting to floor 100 the hard way I only used bombs, and got to floor 85+ but had to quit because it was 1.50 and i used the return scepter 😭
the first time i did it without ladders because i thought if i used ladders the quest would not be complete xd
7:50 is grandpa flipping me off?
I’ve always thought of Mr Qi as a magical god like figure, more in the power sense than anything else. It makes sense to me why a curious deity would take interest in a farmer who literally gave up almost guaranteed financial stability. It makes sense as to why he’d test how far the player would go even if it meant they’d take a few risks along the way.
And no, I did not get to level 100 the traditional way to hear him praise us. I read the wiki on how to do it, saw he was a bit disappointed when we did it the easy way and promptly said “fuck it, you had me wait 10 years while I tried to figure out your last quest, you can be a little disappointed in me for not wanting to fight shit every 2 seconds”
I've never been to level 100 of the skull cavern but I've had 1 million gold coins before and that will get you the stone needed for 100 staircases. I mean you might say it's dishonourable to use staircases but you probably just used bombs instead.
4:48 that’s me
I think lots of us have been there!
I love these videos. Just found you and subbed
Thanks so much!
I hope the algorithm bless you
Thank you! It seems to have acknowledged, if not blessed me.
Technology can viewed as 'magic' that's it.
A fun little theory is that grandpa's Evulation is him preparing you for mr qi perfection tracker. Hence why he so hard on you when you don't pass it. He might have evaluated grandpa but he failed.
I heard a theory that your grandfather and Mr. Qi fell in love and were significant others and I very much like that theory.
Anyway. Its weird how so many people choose to play this game. They optimise their farms, make millions of dollars selling starfruit wine and truffles, enslave junimos, just so they can afford fancy gold clocks and lord about the town with their top hats and horses, and yet they give Pierre and Joja shit for wanting to do the same thIng. Its this punching down thing they're so quick to accuse others of doing
👉👈 What kind of monster would do that.... 😳
@@Leapalot I know right
pauses video and looks to see when mobile gets the 1.5 update :(
I'm so sorry...
Wait that would actually make sense as to why when you pay Joja like 30 million gold for perfection waivers Mr. Qi is like “cool nice I’m proud”
I’m loving these vids and lost it with the Bo Burnham reference. When I saw and heard Welcome to the Internet for the first time it just gave me Mr.Qi vibes. Like not all the lyrics, but the whole look and environment and I just can’t unsee it.
I'm not over 'are we the baddies?'
That was actually fun to watch. Eh. I think people love reading too deep into the game but I am here for it :)
So, is Linus not our character's uncle? Saw it on a wiki that he is. But... it wasn't the official stardew wiki. I'm so confused @_@
Definitely not as far as the vanilla game is concerned. Might be from a mod!
Mr. Qi used to be mayor of Stardew Valley before Lewis. 20 years ago, Lewis gets serious dirt on him so he disappears while on the run from the ABC police. He assumes a new identity, Mr. Qi.
