Personnel:
Armond Morales, Gary McSpadden, Jake Hess, Jim Murray, Henry Slaughter
Note: Jim Murray appears with the quartet, but the vocals were recorded with Sherill Nielsen. - Hudba
That's my cousin, Henry Slaughter, introducing the group and playing piano. He's past 90 and still playing, singing, and composing.
LOVE Henry & Hazel!!
Need to sit down with him and listen to him talk then, the stories he could tell are probably priceless
Thats wonderful,Saw Jake Hess in concert numerous times in his later years,He was great!
WOW, He's past 90, still hitting that piano! O.K. I sit and wonder why Hollywood and Los Angeles carries on about Betty White? In 2021, Betty's still going. Take care of yourself is the key, I guess.
Henry was certainly one of the greatest pianists ever! I will never forget the first time I heard him and his family playing in Maine!
And today is Gary McSpadden's first day in heaven....
For sure...for sure!
Yesterday was my mom's first day in heaven... much as I miss her, glad she's there and not sick anymore.
God bless you sorry for your loss but she is with Jesus now
Jake Hess had and kept this beautiful smile 😊
Jake Hess always so happy to sing his songs
Brother Jake Hess has been enjoying his first day in Heaven and many many more since he Accended up into the eternal heavenly abode singing with all the glorified saints around the magestic tree of Life, bathed in the bright everlasting Light of his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, in whom Jake served so long and so faithfully for so many decades!!
Armand Morales---one of the best gospel quartet bass singers ever. He has smooth low notes that blend with the other voices, not like most of the basses today who produce rumbling sounds that do not blend but instead stand out. Just my preference...
Yes, Armand had a great bass voice. The world lost a great singer yesterday. RIP Armand, his 1st Day In Heaven.
Jake Hess is experiencing heaven now.
Jake looks so young in this one
This clip is from the movie "Sing a Song For Heaven's Sake" and was made in 1966. The VHS version is for sale at Amazon and Ebay for around $300!!
Jake Hess and the Imperials we're awesome.
Give me the Imperials and a whole lot of Kenny Hinson and I'm good.
Jake Hess, my all time favorite.
One word to describe this group. Class. There wasn't a bad singer in this group! Could have been called the All Stars Quartet.
The addition of Jim Murray as Tenor was about the time Jake started having Heart issues. Also about the time Henry Slaughter exited the group as well. Gary Mcspadden came from The Oakridge Boys and Armond Morales from The Weatherford Quartet. This was the early lineup of the group.
Well it's a great, great morning
Your first day in Heaven
When you stroll down the golden avenue.
There are mansions left and right
And you're thrilled at every sight
And the saints are always smiling saying "How do you do?"
Oh it's a great, great morning
You're first day in Heaven
When you realize your worrying day are through.
You'll be glad you were not idol
Took time to read your bible
It's a great morning for you.
I had a dream, I must confess, I hated to awake.
He dreamt he was an angel at the great pearly gates.
Saint Peter said "Well hello there, where have you been?
We've got your mansion ready so come right in."
And then he ranged for an angel to act as a guide.
He spread his wings a time or two and then let me fly.
Well it's a great, great morning
Your first day in Heaven
When you're strolling down the golden avenue.
There are mansions left and right
And you're thrilled at every sight
And the saints are always smiling saying "How do you do?"
Oh it's a great, great morning
You're first day in Heaven
When you realize your worrying day are through.
You'll be glad you were not idol
Took time to read your bible
It's a great morning,
A great morning,
What a happy day
I noticed a young Jim Murray though the vocals weren't his. Armond had such an effortless deep bass voice. RIP Jake, Gary, Henry and Armond.
That Man, Dear Sir, is Gary McSpadden, who would later sing w/The Bill Gaither Family Trio, after Danny Gaither went Solo !
boy, you can sure pick out Jake right away. He was such a unique performer. this was great to see
You can see him on a documentary about Dr. Gene Scott, some very nice takes here on YT called God's Angry Man by Werner Herzog. He always stands out. Also there's a favorite clip pf Scott's - PLAY IT AGAIN! - with a quartette singing I Wanna Know and I don't think it's the Statesmen but that bass singer is smooth!
I can't stop watching this video, it is so deep!! I am sure I will be in heaven with golden avenues
Loved Jake dearly but glad to see the others featured too.
My friends always do a great job.
Thank you for posting this excellent recording of the early days.
OH WOW!!! This was a really neat "OLD" video... Thanks for sharing. And YES Gary McSpadden looked ALOT like Elvis.
Amen. Thanks for sharing
R.I.P. Armond Morales (1932-2022) he passed away at December 5 2022.
I remember seeing them and others on the Gospel Singing Jubilee on channel four out of Oklahoma city on sunday mornings way back in the late sixties early seventies, loved it.
Best singers
Wow! I never thought I would see a video of early Imperials. I have albums from that time but this is great. (even though it's not Jim singing) Thanks for posting.
Jake Hess!!
Look at a young Gary and a young Jim 😁
Imperdible la sonrisa de Jake jajaja, que bueno el video.
jajaj, que jovenes se miran Jim Murray y Gary, sin duda tienen una gran trayectoria.
I c Elvis in him, that is Gary
Great Morning, Great Quartet - Thanks
That'll preach !!! 😇
Gary McSpadden looked a lot like Elvis back then.
Sherrill Neisen recording with Jim Murray video
Jim Murray was with Jake Hess & The Imperials, but the voice on soundtrack was the previous tenor with the Imperials-Sherrill Nielsen.
Times have changed a lot since then. Still cool though.
Gary McSpadden sang with the Gaither Vocal Band along time ago
Jesus waited for Stephen and stood up when he passed from this earth.
Remember, God is in control and has more than just 3 or 4 verses to be dogmatic about. He has a total book that teaches more than we will know on earth.
l-r jim Murray(t), Gary McSpadden(bari), Jake Hess(lead), and Armond Morales(bass). I think the movie was released in '65. Armond sang with the Weatherfords previously as well. Jake with the John Daniel Quartet and the Melody Men(to name a few). Gary spent some time with the Oak Ridge Quartet/Boys and Jim later sang with the Gaither Vocal Band.
@James35031 YOUR RIGHT ABOUT THAT JAMES. JIM HAND JUST JOINED THE GOUP. BOTH THOSE GUYS WERE GREAT TENORS. SHERRILL SANG WITH ELVIS FOR A FEW YEARS. MY FAVORITE IMPERIALS GROUP WAS, JIM MURRAY, TERRY BLACKWOOD ROGER WILES, AND ARMOND MORALES WITH JOE M ON THE PIANO. THOSE WERE THE DAYS
Wish we could find vid's of the Imperials w/ Sherrill Nielsen. They were such a perceived threat to other SG quartet's, thay may not have let them on TV much.
Sherrill does such a dead-on Denver Crumpler-style solo on this one. They say that Jake was actually looking for a Crump-like tenor, and he found Nielsen singing with the Speers. BOOM. Later, when Nielsen sang with the Statesmen, (Nielsen, Jim Hill, Doy, Chief) they almost sounded like the classic Statesmen. from the 50s.
Note: Jim Murray appears with the quartet, but the vocals were recorded with Sherill Nielsen.
Sherill without a doubt
Interesting that Murray and morales backed up Elvis from 1969-72 and Hess and Morales backed him up on two of his gospel albums in 66 and 72. They won Grammys
It is Sherill with out a doubt!
@killingcommando Yo pienso exactamente lo mismo.
What was surprising to me was that, when Jim Murray had his short solo, it was the voice of Sherrill Nielsen, the previous tenor. They are lip syncing an older recording!
the recording is only older by a year if even that. The video was recorded in 1966, the same year that Jim Murray joined.
Woe, did not expect that from Jim, sounds odd.
It's not his voice. It's Sherill Nielsen
This is one of the all-time best quartets. Difficult harmonies, great individual soloists, ahead of it’s time arrangements and instrumentation. I also loved Henry’s piano playing. Also, if you notice, they are singing to a pre-recorded track. That track had their previous tenor, Shaun Nielsen singing. So Jim Murray is lip-synching to Shaun’s voice.
Jim is the tenor(left of Gary)
Live recording apparently wasn't possible when this was made because Jim Murray is singing with Sherril Neilson's voice. lol Really weird to see that. This was the best group in gospel music for a few years until Jake had to leave because of health reasons. Gary left shortly thereafter to pastor with his Dad in Fort Worth, and then joined the Gaither Trio. When Terry Blackwood and Sherman Andrus came on the scene, they were still a great group, but their more "contemporary" music wasn't well received by the old school gospel music fans.

Boy, the Armond Morales Imperials was sure well received by myself. In my young adult years, I had every album, and listened to them daily. I thank God for their group. I'm looking forward to my "first day in heaven," at the rapture, and seeing my beloved mother, Mollie. PRAISE THE LORD, as she always said.
@James35031 I didn't think that was Jim Murray, although the voice is very good. BTW, does anyone know if this movie can be see anywhere online in its entirety?
I thought Gary McSpadden looked like Elvis too - but the didn't seem to be happy to be there...on the close ups. Great old song though.
I love this video lip sync and all. Wonder why Jim Murray had to lip sync Sherrill's part?
Dutchman , no this is NOT my dad's voice on this song! I believe dad had just joined the group and there was no ""recorded" track of First Day in Heaven with dad singing on it yet.
Hey, who's the guy on the left that looks like a young Elvis? I was born in 1964. I remember "sort of" Jake Hess on TV playing Gospel Videos in Nashville at Channel 5 before there was a such thing as MTV, which MTV came around when I was in High School. Did MTV steal the idea of playing music videos on TV from Local Nashville TV? This was back when Southern Gospel was good. I'm getting on 57 in 2021, Southern Gospel has dropped to a point that Contemporary Christian Music has taken over FM Radio. BTW: Didn't Elvis sing with The Imperials in the 70s?
Gary mcspadden.
@mjuniorsc Golden Avenues means golden streets. You walk on them.
You could be right..I know Jim personally but it could just be the recording quality and his voice at that age. Everything else seems like it fits....This is a tough one. Great video though. Thanks
Does anyone know where to find the whole movie: Sing a Song for Heaven's Sake? :)
Great song....Jake and the Imperials. The one singer there looks a bit like Gary McSpadden.
It is Gary McSpadden.
The man second from the first looks like George Clooney lol
@jlejra yah lol Jake Hess is soo young!! sum1 said he looks like mickey rooney !
Is this the beginnings of the Imperials quartet
I like this clip but that is Sherrill Nielsen's voice coming from Jim Murray.
Does anybody know who played guitar on this? Thank you!
the one on the far left
Do you have the NewSong version of this same song (released in 1981)?
www.migliacci.com/music/details/48027.html
These whiteboys killed it. All that Chet Atkins sound in there
What about what Paul was moved to write:
2 Cor 5:6-8 Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord:
(For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
Luke 16 is another example.
Don't confuse the Resurrection of the body at the calling up (rapture) with what happens to the believer after death and before the calling up of the saints.
Oh my! What year was this one??
1966 if I remember correctly
Hello is this movie "Sing a Song For Heaven's Sake" available for purchase either online or in a store somewhere? Thanks - ROB.
No
Who is the bass singer I never seen him before he amazing
I believe that is Armond Morrales.
Yes it is Armond Morales and he is still singing and has the smoothest bass voice I have ever heard.
So is it just me or does the 2nd from left look just like George Clooney?
Armand Christian I can see a resemblance. McSpadden was a good looking man.
+Marci Sorrell Until it zoomed in on them I was thinking he resembled Elivs myself.
I had no idea that McSpadden was anywhere near that old. He looks just about the same today.
Armand Christian Close!
Armand Christian That is Gary McSpadden, who Later went to Bill Gaither Family Trio, after Mc Danny Haither went into A Solo Career !
Did I say Pharisee?
listen and look that's not Jim Murray singing it's Sherrill Nelson. I do like the clip, though.
Can anyone put names on all of these guys?
From left to right on the screen: Jim Murray (tenor), Gary McSpadden (baritone), Jake Hess (lead), Armand Morales (bass). However, an unusual thing is happening. They are singing to a pre-recorded track and the person actually singing the tenor part is Shaun Nielsen, who was the previous tenor. So Jim Murray is lip-synching to someone else’s voice.
@@Djm8520 Thanks for your reply. But there is one thing that doesn't make sense to me or maybe I am missing
something. If the group is singing to a prerecorded music track and the tenor is the voice of someone else that is dubbed
in, wouldn't that mean that in this number all four of them would have to be lip-synching too?
@@Eddie_Schantz Yes they are all lip-synching, but the rest of them are lip-synching to their own voices. If you watch closely you can see it, although the great Jake Hess is a fantastic lip-syncher.
@@Djm8520 Thanks for confirming that. They all sounded great.
@@Eddie_Schantz Cheers!
1967?
Isn’t that Sherill Nielsen’s voice ?
WOW Jim Murray, Gary Mcspadden, Jake Hess, im not familiar with the Bass singer.
wait i do know the bass singer Armond Morales . Took me a minute to recognize him.
"evegpt" I wish there were many more Christians in the Church today like you! May your comment to "chowman007" challenge all of us who profess Jesus Christ as our Lord and Saviour, glory be to His Holy Name!!
those guys are trying soo hard to stay still lol
kd5hms63 ...so brother Hess is singing in heaven?,...wow, it surely is nice to have a faith like yours, but it surely goes against what paul says in 1 Cor.15.51-52;1 Thes.4.13-17. So brother Hess, who I enjoyed very much, has preceeded us?
G
I still have no idea what the bass singer actually says.
tenor - And then he rang for an angel to act as a guide.
bass - He spread his wings a time or two and learned how to fly.
WHY does the quartet LOOK SO STIFF ! Nervous, Perhaps !
William Wiles Because it was 1965
*1966
Good job of lip-syncing. Problem is it's Sherrill Nielsen's voice Jim Murray is syncing to. I have the old vinyl LP this song is on.
I knew something was off with Jim Murray's part
Isn't The Imperials the longest running Christian group of all time?
No. That would be the King's Heralds. They have been active since 1927.
@@daryltracy7949 gospel singers yes, but Contemporary Christian the Imperials are the longest running that have songs that have charted on CCM.
Ok. I recend the use of the word "Wow". I regret using it. Now, I would affirmed that such thinking " JH enjoying his first day...since he Accended." is contrary to what Paul teaches in the verses above. To say something as FACT when is going directly against what Paul thaught and what Jesus says ( John 14.3 ) is not biblical sound. And evegpt, you may want to read 1 kings 18.27 - now, this is sarcasm at it's best something that I did not do!. In Godly love Have a good one. I mean it. God Bless.
Yeah, i also thought Gary McSpadden had movie star good looks too! And Jim Murray sounded like a woman there. His voice has matured a lot thru the decades, though.
Drew Rellim That is Jim Murray.
The point of a tenor is to sound like a woman lol
that was not his voice
That's old skool white christian singers for ya..when they are feeling real frisky one might do a little punch move with one arm..but for the most part, they all stiff...if you really wanna bump with Jesus...black gospel is where its at.
I wouldn't trade that for this in a hot minute. This is gospel music at it's finest.
*dislike* This implies that Heaven is all about us, and that God is all about us...and that simply is not true.
Time has no meaning with God so how do you know he isn't singing right now? Eternity has no beginning and no end so who knows? And stop being so sarcastic to a fellow Christian. This was not said in love and you know it, more a self righteous spirit. than a loving one. If you feel you must correct someone, do it in love not ridicule.
Its good to be white.
Jake looks so young in this one
boy, you can sure pick out Jake right away. He was such a unique performer. this was great to see
