From the garrison to PhD, Economist Dr Andre Haughton gives mind-blowing insight into his life!

  • Dr Andre Haughton is an Economist, University lecturer and political representative who comes from a very rough garrison community in Montego Bay. Despite going on a wayward path as a youngster, his ability to refocus, and channel his energy towards his education, leading him to a path polar opposite from what many of his teachers assumed, Andre's story is a true Beauty In The Ashes tale. He offers mind blowing insight into the economic changes Jamaica could implement to advance the nation and offers solid advice to the youth about choosing the path of education verses the gangs and crime!

    The greatest resource that any country has will be its people. This is one of observations that I take from this discussion. Dr. Haughton’s eloquence, decisiveness and practical delivery of solutions to uplift our country are refreshing insights. If only this would be the colossal pool of thought among the populous. It takes a change of mindset and that’s what we lack as a nation. With all our talent and greatness within us, I often wonder the global impact we would have as Jamaicans beyond the recognition that we currently have. If only more of us became aware and intentional about the solutions proffered by Dr. Haughton. Thanks Doc, this is one that makes me feel proud to be a Jamaican.

    This is one of the best interviews you have had. The sad thing is some 'black' people think education and hard work is for other races not the black race. We need more people like this gentleman in the world. It's not were you are coming from, it's where you are going. His mother taught him well. Kudos to all the single/divorce mothers who have raise their children well and teach them that education and hard work does pay off.

    • @dawnb.1127
      @dawnb.1127 Před 2 lety +6

      What race have to do with this and who told you that black people don't invest in education?, Jamaica literacy is over 80%, if you know anything about the crime in Jamaica, you would know that it is committed by a minority of the population and some of those young people that are involved in crime are educated, many Jamaicans are unable to further their education because of their financial situation, but at least they got the basic, so please stop this nonsense about black people are not interested in education.

    • @godlovesnaxtess4698
      @godlovesnaxtess4698 Před 2 lety +3

      @@dawnb.1127 I dont think you got the points made by Dr Haughton. If you think think the crime is committed by the minority, think again. What do you think corruption is? Even former Senior Superintentdent of Police Renito Adams spoke of it and everyone was up in arms. Dr Haughton went to lengths to mention how the youths view "Discilpine" for this very same reason. And the good Dr was very clear in pointing out where the youths get the idea/thoughts/example of stealing/quick money now... mentality from. It has nothing to do with education per se but everthing to do with the examples that they see infront of them, where the majority of the population is caught up in this mad race to get money at all cost and is very selfish ans unscrupulous in obtaining it. It is happening at ALL LEVELS of the society. And of course RACE... especially the BLACK race... has alot to do with it because the black youths, who are the majority DO NOT HAVE ENOUGH BLACK ROLE MODEL AND MENTORS lke Dr Haughton with the positive morals, values and attitude that they can EMULATE. His mother with her humble beginnings was able to convince him of the importance of education and because of the positive values and attitudes that she inculcated in him, he in turn did not want to disappoint her out of RESPECT of her value system. Perhaps you should relisten the interview with an open, non judgemental mind.

    Another great interview Yendi, and quite informative. Professor Haughton seems knowledgeable,and gives excellent advise to our youths.
    Odyssey with Yendi has become my Sunday ritual, and I so love those quotes. 👏👏

    I really really enjoy this. If everyone was selfless and know their purpose this country would be a better place. Dr.Haughton did great in this interview. He simplies his reasoning so that everyone can understand.

    Wow!! What a man!! If only Jamaica had about a dozen with his foresight & thinking! I could listen to him all evening. Such depth & cognition. Hope he is able to bring some of this to realization. Find some like-minded persons Dr. Haughton & make it happen. Yes, I understand the populace & the ignorance of some & satisfaction of status quo of the others who nuh want nuhbody fi come 'rock di boat'. Jamaica, when will we learn🤔.

    Why can't Jamaica have people like this man running the country. He reminds me of the Hon. Michael Manley who truly had the best interest of Jamaica at heart. This is not a PNP or JLP comment so don't come at me with that. I'm neither JLP nor PNP, I'm a Jamaican, who loves Jamaica, living abroad, wishing I could feel safe enough to return home to live. I could listen to this gentleman reason all day.

    This is an interview that everyone should hear. The young can learn how to create a positive path for themselves and the Elders could learn to change their thinking and work to rectify their legacy. I applaud the Dr. Haughton for being so grounded, down to earth and so relatable. I pray he will stay in Jamaica and the people will listen, learn and change their thinking to improve the sustainability of the country. Thank you Yendi for this powerful interview.

    I really appreciate this conversation. Real people not stuck in their head but able to discuss the realities of our lives. Our society is like a tree. All the parts are important. If you cut off the branches that holds the buds that give the fruits, thee trunk become useless. The branches need the trunks and trunk need the branches. Some branches need pruning, but pruning make them produce much better.
