Yes and it is only starting. There are many play to earn games. Imagine playing two or three at the same time. Suddenly you have hundreds more each month.
There is AlienWorlds, the upcoming CryptoBlades, Guild of Guardians, SkyWeaver and much more.
Its not just just money you earn, you can also sell the items you receive, some of them worth hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

As a play-to-earn game, it requires constant growth or equal community representation of pay-to-play players. With a barrier of $150 entry and crypto handling knowledge, I think it will flame out when demand plateaus, like a ponzi.
If a game is fun and accessible for average players, this play-to-earn idea could function. With the barriers to entry, that looks unlikely for Axies.
I only just heard of Play-to-Earn as a concept. It immediately triggered my 'bs-radar', and it seems like you've put my concerns into words quite effectively. Is there more that could be said on this topic? You said 'if a game is fun and accessible, this could function...', but wouldn't the first qualifiers you pointed out still apply? And isn't the pay-to-play to play-to-earn ratio still relevant, even with constant growth? Where else does the money come from?
Finally, is this actually something which a company benefits from to produce, or is it just essentially a virtue signal? Is this really a more effective business model than others, like normal pay-to-play, free-to-play with mtx, etc?
The whole thing reeks of MLM to me...

@@bakers39 Hey bro if you like the game all power to you. If you have no argument against what the original post pointed out, I'm just voicing my skepticism. Feel free to think otherwise. I'm not telling people not to 'take advantage of the opportunity', particularly if you enjoy playing the game. The ONLY reason I'm here is because I've seen suggestions cropping up on the forums for a game which I DO play saying that they should make the game be like Axie Infinity, Play-to-Earn. This is a problem if, as I seem to think, it's a scam and a bad business model. I don't want the players or game to suffer due to this -what I perceive as- predatory tactic.
It's not a ponzi if you can make the game fun enough, such that real players are willing to spend money into the game for the entertainment aspect of it.
For any game to survive, it has to be fun. It'll still take some time for blockchain games to catch up with traditional games in terms of fun, but they'll get there eventually.
