I Bought a PlayStation TV from EBAY in 2021... (waste of money??)

- When the PlayStation TV was released in stores in 2015, I was intrigued and wanted to buy one, but I ended up never buying one; until recently when I decided to buy one from eBay! This is such an interesting little device, so I knew I had to make a video about it. Let me know down in the comments if you have a PS TV!

So I'm hearing that this thing is an emulation powerhouse... Even with a modded PS TV, do you think it's worth $200?
Questionable... But let's hear what the viewers have to say!
So its like a mini xbox series s it can emulate things too lol 😆
Persona 4 golden makes it worth it
@@Scbalq im comparing the size cause the series s is smaller
I got mine for $27 at a local retro gaming store. They sell vitas for $150 but had this priced for $27 which was an absolute steal.
I remember when they were selling them new for $40. I should have bought one so I could sell it to a CZcamsr in 2021.
Lol
i got one for $40 in target a few years back.
i dont even want to look at the price some people are scalping them for these days edit: oh wow i seen they sell for £60 in uk thats day light robbery.. lmao still cheaper then buying a vita though i bet these was about £30 back in the day
@@mccalejk2 If you still have it you might want to sell it.
@@mccalejk2 have you hooked it up with the jailbreak? Its just a vita in a box, so you can play all psp, most vita without touch controls, homebrew and emulators, along with native ps1 support
I remember when walmart was getting rid of them for 10 bucks just to clean out inventory
Did you get any? I would've bought 2, one for bedroom and one for living room and I'm an Xbox guy 😂
That would be cool if I got 3 of those
Honestly, if they did a new Playstation TV with actual apps (Netflix, Hulu, HBO, etc.), PS4/PS5 remote play support, and PS Now, and sell it for like $50, It'd probably sell well. It'd be a decent Roku competitor. Hell, they can sell TVs with the software installed, and people would buy it just for the Playstation functionality
I sure as hell would
heres the thing. it wouldnt, well maybe except for people who would buy it to use it to watch netflix or hulu or any of the other apps. but if only gamers bought it, it wouldnt have, memory cards.
@@lithuanianballer3859 it doesn’t need memory cards. It’d use the internet to do either PS Now or Remote play
@@lithuanianballer3859 they would just make it take regular SD cards
@@ocsjc13 the point
The only thing I know about this device is that it's apparently the fastest way to speedrun "a bug's Life" for the ps1
Haha what
Or the fastest way to waste money ...
Makes sense. The stock ps1 emulator in it has a setting to eliminate loading screens from games that were originally on a disc.
PSTV (+ Vita but controls aren't as good compared to DS3/DS4) is usually the fastest way to play a majority of PS1 games due to the Fast Disc Speed emulation setting, which gets the added benefit of being digital as opposed to the PS2's FDS setting which can be susceptible to more issues related to aging mechanical hardware and disc quality
This is actually the first playstation console i ever owned. (I was always a Nintendo kid) I bought it to play Persona 4 and Hatsune Miku, it was a great little console for people who liked those types of games the Vita had to offer. I got mine in a bundle with a ds3, 16gb memory card, lego movie game, sly cooper for $70 because they were discontinuing them at the time. I have no regrets in buying it, I beat Persona 4 on it and had lots of fun.
I've had mine for a few months now. Modded with emulators and quite a few ps1 games. I use a ds4 controller with no problems at all. I love it!!
oooo so you can mod this like a ps vita
You're better off getting a Series S for a little bit more and adding emulators on that instead of this.
Duckstation on Series S enhances everything on those old games.

They have been sitting at that price for like four years now.
I mean your phone can probably emulate the same games
@@ZK-ff2ru Probably, playing emulated games on phones are annoying though. Either you're using garbage touchscreen controls or using a Bluetooth controller.
@@MilkWasABadChoice17 Agree on the annoying part but you can get a cheap bluetooth controller
Man I remember seeing these go on sale for $20 back in the day and saying "Why would I want this instead of just getting an actual vita?" I REALLY regret that. Thankfully my viewers are amazing and someone loaned one to me so I could make videos. Don't know what I'd do without them.
Lol same. I remember seeing the ps tv when it came out and being interested, but never interested enough to actually buy one. And the price kept going down and down... And I still never bought one... Until the price on ebay doubled what retail was and then I decide that would be a great deal! 😂
Eh the actual Vita is still better 99% of the time
Where are you people getting this information from that these things sold for $20 and $40 and all that these things never sold that low the only way you got it that low is if you got one that was refurbished the actual console brand new cost of $99 so I don't believe you paid $20 for a brand new console
@@OfficialDJTasawennateken they went for that price back in 2014-2016
@@OfficialDJTasawennateken black friday deals and clearance prices exist. If they didn't sell well and stores were trying to get rid of them, I'm sure they dropped below retail price at least once or twice
I bought mine at launch, got the launch edition bundle for $140 and was totally worth the money.
It came with the PSTV (obviously).
A DS3 controller.
An 8GB Vita memory card.
Download voucher for Lego Movie Game.
And all that for only $40 extra, was totally worth it back in the day
Lego movie game? Clearly not that old given how the lego movie... came out... 7... years ago.. ok maybe it is old.
Doesn’t really seem worth it
@@TheProfessor66 again, bought it at launch. $140 then for a $60 game and a brand new DS3 was worth it
@@themoongateofficial it certainly was/still is at the time. Launched in 2014, got a $60 game, a new dualshock 3, and a Vita memory card (which too were also very expensive). Totally worth in my opinion
Sounds like a whole lot of not worth it to me.
Got it new back when it first came out. It sat in a shelf shortly thereafter, through several moves. I then modded it last year, along with my normal Vita 1000. It's a mainstay in my gaming collection from then on. It's easily the best way to play PSP games natively on the big screen, and the only way to do so with Vita games.

I remember buying one of these on launch.
I believe I managed to play everything I wanted to on it except Terraria and Playstation Allstars.
Which Terraria didn't upset me too much but Playstation Allstars did.
This was amazing I have 3 of them, I didn't realise it was short lived. Prior to owning this I had to unplug and carry my PS4 between houses and rooms, after I brought 3 of them. 1 for my bedroom, one for my girlfriends house etc I never had to do this anymore. I could connect to the PS4 from anywhere with little to no latency. Obviously remote play is on many many devices now but I must admit I'm upset that my PSTVs don't work with the latest PS5 as streaming to a laptop, or iPad just isn't the same as streaming it to your TV as if the PlayStation was in the same room as you.
This Vita TV has so much potential. Mod it and you fix everything you complained about. Seriously tho. I have both a OLED Vita and the PSTV and I have it crammed with games. It's surprising how many games on switch have been on the Vita for years already.
I still love mine, I like switching the memory card between the PSTV and my Vita depending on what I’m doing with my day… it’s especially great for playing (digital) PSP and Vita exclusives on a TV
Wait... you can actually switch out the sony memory card between two ps vita systems without having to wipe your data?
@@highgradefilms40 don’t you?

@@highgradefilms40 or is this a problem with swapping between two Vitas instead of a Vita and PSTV?
I bought a used one for like$40 a long while back. I wanted P4 Golden, and wanted to play PSP/Vita games on my TV. The most expensive part was the memory card, which has really shot up in price lately.
Jailbreak it, use a SD2Vita Adapter, use Mini SD cards, yw.
@@ibapreppie do u just slot it in the game slot?
@Hansen Noah Yeah it lets you use up to around 256 GB compared to the 64 max of the proprietary memory cards
Just so you are aware. There is way to unlock close to 90% of PS Vita games to play on your PS TV. Go online, even on CZcams if needed, and look up how to whitelist the PS Vita games to the PS TV. This will mod your existing PS TV so you don't need to buy another molded PS TV. You will need a PC and cables to connect your PS TV to your PC so it can update that whitelist to it. After completing the update you will need to restart your PS TV. The only drawback to this is that games that need the touch screen and the back functions will not work on any PS TV. I hope this helps as your video was very informative and I was dismayed when you ran into problems playing games. Also check each game for any updates as that will make some games not play on your PS TV. I hope this helps.
used to have two of them for awhile, gave one to my cousin and sold mines and got a Nvidia Shield TV instead which honestly is miles better
So far I only remember people getting this back in a day to mod it and use it as a retro little console to save on space while moving traveling etc. If you travel or move a lot you need something small obviously and these come in handy. I personally next to a modded slim PS2 having it since forever, never really needed anything else so this PSTV was another thing I just skipped out on.
I was using my vita the same way but now i need to repair it ( joyestick drift and broken screen) But it was the best console for retrogaming until the steam deck
@@DrNexoQC Yeah Vita and PSP variants were mostly used for emulation and mods then what was I guess originally intended for. Also could watch movies on it so guess far better alternative then carrying a bulky DVD player. But yeah nowadays most people have a smartphone or a tablet which replaced and will keep replacing tons of things so as all this mentioned.
I bought one for like $20 when they were on clearance . Was shocked to see what they are going for now. I bought one in case I ever got some Vita games.
Hilarious how these devices got so expensive. I'm currently in possession of three of them, still at update 3.60. Aside from the first one, which I bought clearance'd at around $140, I bought the other two from Gamestop locations for just 40 bucks a pop! People just didn't want them for some reason, but I've always found the PS Vita (and the PSTV) to be highly underrated.
These days it's kinda pointless to have them at 3.60.
A lot of video game and electronic related items increased price over the past few yesrs
@@Chris-zs5qb Everyone started wanting them. Hard to find some GBA models for decent prices these days too, when only a few years ago, all of them were cheap.
For some reason lol. Because if you dont mod them they're basically trash. I mean its cool and all, but I'll just play emulation games on my PC or a raspberry pie if I really want something small.... which I dont lol. ITX board is just fine hooked up to a TV as well.
I think this should come built in with the PS 3D Display and none of them should be sold seperately. It clearly looks like a PS Vita but bigger. You should also be able to plug in a PS3 or PS4 and a PC as well.
I always thought Sony should have just allowed the PS4 to play vita games somehow, even if it’s just digital titles or through an adaptor. Sort of like the GameCube and the GBA adaptor.
I bought it 3wks ago and I love it, It's really great when you're travelling 👌
How much did you pay?
@@jrob0021 50€ (+10 postage). Although it didnt come with the box, still good deal I think
if you go to setting on a vita and tick the box next to 'control this system with buttons' you can use hold circle to close stuff on there too no need to swipe
The ps4 controller does indeed work, you gotta let the orange charge light come on then tap the ps logo
I did that but It never worked for me. Not sure why but I didn't really troubleshoot it
You should def buy a modded psvita there pretty amazing what u can do with one and the community support still, also u should do a tour of ur game collection so far with the amount of stuff you have bought and collected
Massively overpriced though.
@@packlesswolf1 i bought a used ps vita slim from Japan for $125, modded and it's much much better
I luckily found one for around $80 from a regular seller when the prices were increasing in 2019, wished I got it for 40 when they were in clearance but hey, better than getting it now!
The Playstation TV regularly sells for $140 on ebay. Modding it and using a Dual Shock 4 controller touch allows ability to play all vita games.
you can get around the game blacklist with homebrew so you can play everything. you can also overclock it, and use touchscreen functions on the DS4 touchpad. It's the only official (and reliable) way to play vita games on the big screen. emulation is huge bonus as well. plus flawless native support for PS1 and PSP games.
Been using this for a couple years as a dedicated remote play device to my desk. Works flawlessly IF both devices are on Ethernet and the ps4 controller is connected to the ps4 and not the pstv.
And if you don’t mind 720p
PSTV has it's niche in the PS1 speedrunning scene (Silent Hill, RE, Spyro etc...), because it has faster loading times.
Hmm interesting. How well does it run PS1 games?
@@jrob0021 I would like to answer you, but my comment got deleted. idk why.

I bought one recently as well because it's the best way to play psp games officially on a tv
Nice! I had the Lego version with the PS3 controller and memory card!
Lego version? Interesting
@@drd5455 It just had The Lego Movie game, but it was quite downgraded compared to other versions...
I honestly love mine. I got one recently off of FB market place for $140 and also got a 64gig storage card there for $100 as well cuz I didn’t wanna mod it for now. I’m enjoying a lot of the exclusive games like Muramasa (AMAZING GAME), Final Fantasy Tactics War of Lions and the re-release of earlier Persona games. It really depends on what games you enjoy if this is worth it or not. It’s nice that you can play those handheld games on your TV along with most “classic games released on PS3. It looks like this person had bad luck cuz their games has touch features which sucks for him. The vita store is a bit of a mess cuz it’ll randomly will give you errors for some reason. Don’t know why his PS4 controller isn’t working cuz mine works just fine.
Cool video never even heard of the thing but very interesting
I'd say the only version that was slightly worth the money was the Lego Movie Video Game version, that came with the game, a memory stick, and a PS3 controller.
This is a beast for what I paid for it, 30 dollars and I can play ps1, psp, psvita and a ton of homebrew and emulators. I would 100% recommend buying this if it is less than 100
Nice, I'm sure people can find them a bit cheaper than what I got mine for (since I bought one still with the original box)
The only Vita game I could ever see myself wanting to play on my tv would be Killzone Mercenary but I doubt that game would be supported as the whole main menu is all touch buttons.
You need to use up to date and time on the system it's DRM.
Cool !
I actually forgot about this device PS had 😳
Since you asked, my Vita used to be my primary place to read email and check my calendar up until Sept 2020. My Vita TV, no so much because there is no lock screen. It's primary purpose was to remote play my PS4 in the living room. Now that I have PS5, I sold my Vita TV and my PS4 lives in the living room
I remember seeing one in a store that was on a close out rack for $5 and picked it up. Thought it was neat but didn’t really call to me so I gave it to my nephews.
One of the biggest failures seems to be how complicated it was to setup for the average user.. You do need to update games for them to support the pstv and the dualshock 4 should’ve worked, you probably didn’t put it in pairing mode. Maybe the reason the ps4 remote play didn’t automatically find your ps4 is because one is on wifi? There’s a lot of little quirks with this thing for sure.
So the download speed might have to do with the port on the PSTV. It may not have a Gigabit port, meaning that the device itself may not be capable of Gigabit speeds.
Wow, it even had a contact manager section for any Karens xD
I bought and extra one for $20 when I misplaced the first one I bought for $60 that came with a controller. I was going to say you need to update older games to make them work. Some never got made to work on vita tv
I bought mine a long time ago when they were very cheap.
It is pretty good, I ported most of my PSP games and saves to it and since most of my games were PS1 classics and just a few PSP games it all worked fine. Never bought any VITA games, though.
The PS4 controller does work on PSTV it just has to be a official PS4 controller.
And all PSTVs can be hacked and you can play every PSVita game on it.
Good to know. And weird, I'm not sure why mine wasn't working. It was an official PS4 controller. Honestly I didn't try for very long or troubleshoot at all so it was probably something simple that I was doing wrong
@@jrob0021 Your wasnt official because it didnt work . your controller was posibly a fake controller
Can you make a video on using a soft-modded one? Including any possible pros with memory cards (not having to be linked if possible, and reading it in Windows)?
I wasn't looking for one but just picked a boxed one up on Facebook marketplace in Australia for AU$10 (approx US$6) Knew it was a bargain to find it at that price in 2022 and too good to pass up but now to figure out what the hell I can do with it. Tempting to flip but know I'll never see another for this price so investigating reasons to keep it. Thanks for your video as my starting point.
Such a wasted opportunity
I remember buying this being so hyped to play my psvita library on the tv, but then I realized that I had to buy a PS3 controller + a cable separately & barely any games worked on it so I sold it & got a PS3 console instead
I saw the pstv this year at a pawn shop for 20$
I had 2 in a bin of old gaming stuffs and sold them around the time covid first hit. I think I got almost $300 for one of them. I like the idea but it just didn't support enough games. Then it got annoying either having 2 memory cards or swapping between the vita and having stuff installed you cant play. Or missing touch controls. Its just a half baked device.
Love the way u put it. "200 bucks, not cool"
I turned my pstv into a rhythm arcade machine. I used a converter for my project diva controller which works with a variety of games
Huh sounds cool
On 2016 it was sold 43 USD about on Amazon US .
I purchased that and use till now.
It is good console to enjoy PS1, PSP and Vita game.
I thought when PS classic opened, suspect it could be repacking of PSTV(VITATV).
But it wasn't.
No LAN port, no game store or update and laggy.
I love the show powers that they made for this
you can also mod your PS Vita to where you can play all games the ones that you cannot play on ps tv as for you need the touch screen and with the mod it bypasses that
With how expensive psvita are, this may not be better it may depends on which is cheaper, I do wonder on if I should consider getting one. It be interesting to fall in the rabbit hole of vita games to play and jump into a deep history on not monitor instead of a handheld.
Bought one of these when they were getting reduced down to £50. Wanted it mainly to play PSP games on the TV and ended up getting rid of it as most of the PSP games were blocked from playing.
i think the remote play is cool like if ur in a different room and can't bother or literally can't go to where ur console is then yknow just remote play
PS TV modded is a beast of a mini console. Can pick them up if you shop around for like $90
Jailbreak it and install the white lister and you will be able to install any game on it.
Also it's a great little system to use as an emulsion device.
I like how the ps vita slim imitates the ps tvs game card slot because thats the only part of the console that I like its probably nice for emulation u put all the emulators on it and u can play them on any tv really fast
I still have a PSTV. It also plays digital PSP games natively. From there, you can play PSP games on a TV.
Maybe changing the time to current time might work? idk it works on desktops and laptops
that error isn't to do with touch screen features, so the game doesn't install, it's memory card issues, apparently.
I remember when Gamestop was selling them for $19.99 thought about getting one and then when I was going to get one they were sold out
I remember my cousin sending emails to me for fun on his psvita😂. I miss that time
Will a RasPi 4 8gb fit in there? Or a Ryzen9?
It's actually a bargain considering you can mod it to play retro consoles and send the audio/video out to your HDTV. Native PS1 support as well as all of your Vita games too.
I found the Lego bundle version for $100 on Facebook marketplace. It’s kinda rare now. It’s going for over $300 on eBay.
What games are backwards compatible if the ps vita games don’t work?
Remote Play Inception sounds crazy and I love it
I started making a video on it, but then I tried it and it didn't work... Lol so no video
@@jrob0021 aww but oh well
This had lots of potential. But an inferior specs sheet and lack of support from Sony and developers then it was inevitable it was going to be discontinued
If memory serves Sony put this out during the set top box craze era. The two biggest at the time being Roku and Amazon Fire TV. Sony advertising for it kinda made it seem like it was going to be a Roku type device with Vita capabilities plus PS4 remote play. As you have found out that wasn't the case at all. The thing didn't have CZcams, Hulu, or Netflix (three apps the vita had and the main reasons to owning a set top box at the time) With the PS4 remote play lag and less then half the capabilities of an actual Vita including games it could play but requires the vita expensive SD cards to function. There's a reason it died.

Can you play vids from a USB key ? Can it read mkv ?
To sync you PS4 controller you need to use a USB cable. To make it sync.
Modding the console is the best use. I recently soft modded mine it's totally worth it.
Well that's the weird thing. I did use a USB cable and pressed the PS button. It was trying to connect but never did
I got an issue that the whole system shut down while running the game system:(
i got one fur $35 us and wasn't happy about it. I mod it into an emulation box, but once I got an Raspberry Pi 4 that became my emulation box. My Mac is at home emulation box the pi 4 is more fur on the road.
PS TV had a lot of potential, idk why Sony seemingly dropped that product line.
They definitely could have released a newer model for game streaming on the go like Stadia. Imagine carrying a mini PS3 or PS4 everywhere with you. No more heavy backpacks to your friends house, just bring the little box and a few controllers.
they had the opportunity to make it way better
Is the ps tv compatible with the six axis controller? I only have a ps5 and six axis controller. Was thinking about buying one.
Yes it is
So did it work with ps5
I still use the Email app, Calendar app, Twitter app on my PS Vita.
I bought my PSTV brand new right as the price crashed out, spent maybe $40 on it. Modded it, whitelist corrected, popped in a Vita2SD with a 512GB (started with 64GB and slowly upgraded to the 512, which I just added about 2 months ago) card and I'm off to the races.
Great use of $40
Honestly, if you don't know what to do with it, it's becouse you don't really care. Even big channels have talked about it. It's great. Believe me, I gladly take it of your hands! 😊
