  • Review description for materials used in today’s video. Today I will be using Vaqueta Leather from Montana Leather to build a custom leather handbag. I would rate this handbag as a beginner leather project. While I tooled the accent leather on this project you could skip tooling the leather if you were not ready to tackle leather tooling. Yet, I would say that it’s the perfect tooling project to get your start. While you will notice that the leather today is dyed I did not dye the leather. There are several things that I like about this line of leather. First is the range of colors. The leather dye line that I use does not have the vibrant colors that is available in the Vaqueta leather. It is also nice to decide on a project and not need to wait for dye to dry as part of the time needed to complete your project l. Also it’s nice to have the same colors available in two thicknesses. The 3.5 - 5 ounce and 8-9 ounce leather covers needs for a wide range of projects.
Check out the leather from today’s video. You can find it and other leather craft items at

In today’s video I used two colors of leather they were Vaqueta in Fuchsia and Vaqueta in Brown. Both were in 3.5 - 5 ounce weights.

I also used Fiebing’s Resolene to coat and protect the custom leather handbag.

Cut gusset a little longer than needed. Mark centers of bag and gusset. Match center marks and glue together. Trim excess. Easiest way to get right first time.

Always start in the middle and work your way around. Make your gusset a little long and trim to fit.

Could you have used your new knife for those ends ?

Very nice project Robert. Can you reuse the sponge applicator you use to apply the Resoline? If so, is there anything special you need to do to the applicator so it can be reused the next time? Thanks much.

Great question. The container that I use has a raised section in the middle bottom. I only put enough in the container to go in the lower area of the tub. So when done I just set it inside and put the lid back on. It stays fresh. The sponge I’m using is one a year old. Occasionally I run the Resolene out and wash them both out with tall water and go again. Have been using the tub for about two years.

Thanks, Robert. Sounds like a good system. I'll need to give that a try.

So you used the chisel on the main piece of the bag but used a punch to place the hole in the gusset once it was adhered to the bag during stirxhing ?

I ended up deciding to only stitch the gusset in. I think it turned out great.

Where did you get the cutting board for your round/head knife

Great question. I purchased cutting boards from Buyplastics.com. That includes that new black one. The black one is a Acetal Copolymer
