    Minty, I'm shocked! You completely missed that this was the first of two movies in which James Earl Jones and Madge Sinclair portrayed African royalty. The second, of course, was when they voiced Mufasa and Sarabi in The Lion King!

    I was in high school when they were shooting this. They changed our local Wendy's into the fast food joint and built a fence around it so people couldn't get too close. We even got a quick glimpse of Eddie Murphy going from his car into the building one day!

      @@ngalahansel6066 They were intimating that horrendous things happened to the dog in the apartment. Unspeakable things. In other words, the true crime in that apartment happened to the dog, not the humans. At least, that is how I always interpreted the line.

      @@ngalahansel6066 It's a sight gag, because the image of an outline in the shape of a dog is not a familiar sight at a crime scene the way an outline of a human would be. This scene had an outline of each, so the poor dog was a victim, too.

    I went to see this with my cousin. If I live to be a thousand I will never forget the way she nearly hurt herself laughing when Akeem's birthday song was performed--"...and she's free of disease!" I think my cousin missed the next five minutes of the movie because she couldn't recover from hysterics. I just love this movie to death.

      @@CandieP It's very funny, but there's a difference between actually working your way up to success and just simply being born to it by virtue of being a member of royalty. McDowell's house may have been modest by the standards of Prince Akeem's palace, but at least he earned it. So maybe he had a right to brag a little..lol. I know it's just a movie but that's another way of looking at it. Take care.

    One of my favorite movies! I watched it with someone a few years back who'd never seen it before and they had an interesting point. He said There's not really an antagonist or a "bad guy". And when I thought about it, he's right! Eric LeSalle's character Darryl is the closest, but still not a villain - type. It's strange, I can't think of another movie offhand with no bad guy.

    Even now,
    every time I hear or see something completely messed up,

    The bath scene serves as the first time that I had ever seen a pair of breasts on screen. And for that, this movie will always hold a special place in my heart.
    But that aside, this movie is pure comedic brilliance. I love Coming to America.

    Of Eddie Murphy's films, this is probably my all-time favorite. I never grow tired of watching this film whenever it comes on TV, or if I watch it on DVD. I can't wait for the sequel, out this Christmas.

      Simba's mother has two lines in the entire Lion King so it's very forgettable it was Madge Sinclair at all.
      Much like monkey being voiced by Jackie Chan in Kung Foo Panda.

    Yup, my aunt worked at that McDowalls back in 1988 until about 1990. It was originally a Wendys. She went to school at the St. John's campus just down the street from there on Queens Blvd and Atlantic. I remember my dad used to take me there to visit her and get free happy meals (I was born in 85) and she told me way later that she didn't start working there until right after filming ended and it got switched back to Wendys. This movie is one of our favorites, yes partially because of that.

    I have to admit this is another one of any Murphy's best films ever cause it is funny and romantic and murphy played the Prince amazingly well and I heard there's gonna be coming to America 2 and it's got this same cast.       Bet you anything it's gonna be a soft reboot with the son of the prince. It's gonna have every popular modern black actor like Kevin Heart and Craig Robinson. They will modernize it of course and Hakeem's son will be a hipster nerd of some kind just trying to find a girl that would like him. Being a millennial and Hakeem's son, he will have grown up without the same privileges he had and has never interacted with a girl before.
