  • Today I got the 2, 5-ton service ramps I ordered from Home Depot.
    Needless to say as usual there were some missing parts but nothing to prevent using the ramps. Word of caution to those that may be thinking of buying these ramps.... DON'T. I should have paid attention to the 3 star rating of the ramps on the website. The video has a surprise to it. Enjoy.

    First you were against them before you even tried them, why didn't you just stop and send them back then? You said parts were missing and you did not like them. This design is used by many other manufacturers and it works as designed, as for the gauge of metal just eyeball a plastic ramp they sell these days about the same thickness and it works. Second, you can blame the ramp all you want but they held as they were designed to, the driver is responsible for putting them on the ramp safely and not driving past the end, If you look at all the styles you will find many with less of a stop than those, it's almost nonexistent on plastic ones, which are what about an 1/8 of an inch thick too and hold up the cars with no issues except being too low. I miss the old ramps they were more robust and a lot taller than they offer now, only way to get one of those is to make it yourself, they just don't sell them anymore. The damage to your truck was self inflicted by not using the ramps properly, sad but true. Maybe you should consider scissors lift? As for missing parts etc., that's from the shipping process not home depot, trust me I know about our crappy shipping these days I get boxes every day and lazy ups, FedEx, etc. workers would rather drop the box to the ground and slide it than to carry it and place it correctly, just how bad our American work force has become, no pride in a job well done anymore. I have gotten many items from Home Depot and never had an issue. Find the kind you like but they are all about the same.

      I have used many ramps in my life ( 74 years ) and the last ramps I used were from Pep Boys. Although that was quite a few years ago, the concept is the same. I have always owned either a van (not mini van) or a pickup truck. I have never had a problem driving onto any of the ramps I've owned. For some reason getting up these ramps were difficult for my truck. You could actually smell the clutch getting hot. One thing you never want to do is take a running charge going up ramps. The main problem was that the wheel plate was too short for my truck tire size. Although the ramps now may not have stop points on them, you should still be able to feel when the tire settles into the tire bed/plate. The missing parts are a moot point, the screws/bolts could have been replaced. The ramps had a bad tipping point as well as short tire bed/plate. Overall a bad design for truck use. Lesson learned the hard way. Next time I will make my own.

    One tip for using ramps on your own ,have a large mirror angled at the side so you can see when to stop.

      That's a good idea. I had my drivers side door open and was looking out and down at the tire pan of the ramp. The problem was that the truck tire was too large and the ramp rolled forward dumping the front tires off the ramp. The ramps were not made to handle truck tires. I have used many ramps in my 73 years and never experienced any problems using them until I used these. Another problem was my truck had a hard time going up the ramps,the clutch was getting hot trying to carefully go up them.

    Watched a video of these in action , and the ramp actually lifted off the ground when the car was going up . Bad accident waiting to happen ! Hope you were able to get the damage repaired , and thank God you weren’t injured !

      These ramps are dangerous. Over the years (a lot of them ) I have use ramps to work on my vehicles,and by far these are the worst.
      Thanks again for your comment, be safe. God Bless

      Safety is most important while working on any vehicle and these ramps are far from being safe.

    Got an ad for these ramps, im like no way this will work 🤣🤣 thanks gramps, no trucks would be used on this, maybe like a small honda

    • @nmsidewinder
      @nmsidewinder  Před 2 lety +1

      These ramps are junk. The tire pan the tires would fit in are too short for truck tires, thus you run off the end of them without warning.
      Also when you read the poor instructions that comes with them it has a warning that the ramps are only rated at 1.5 tons, not 5 tons as advertised. Thanks for the comment.

    need to weld extensions on the bottom front of ramps so the ramps won't tilt/flip up when tires hit the front lip of lift/stop, But you are right, they are pretty chintzy out of the box, made in China no doubt

    • @nmsidewinder
      @nmsidewinder  Před rokem

      The biggest problem is the tire pan size is much too small for truck tires.
      Of course the tipping problem is just as bad.

  • @jerrydeyirmendjian7294

    In these days of imports, a 5 ton automotive rating is more like 2 max. If you're lucky. I bought an engine stand and it bent to the floor like a pretzel the minute l put a motor on it. The design looked correct, but that was its only virtue.

    I don’t like the ramps either, but that surface is too smooth. Best if you used a rubber mats under those. That truck to powerful for those wimpy Ramps. Also no need the included jacks since the truck is high up already.😳

    • @nmsidewinder
      @nmsidewinder  Před 2 lety

      The ramps moving while I was driving up on them wasn't the problem in this case. The problem was that the tire pan or plate the tire was supposed to stop on was to small or short. By the time you could see the tire entering the tire plate the tire was already pushing the ramp, tilting it and allowing the tire to come off the ramp. The ramps were never made for a pickup or any vehicle with large tires.

      The ramps offer more height than that shown in the video. They have a built in bottle jack which elevates the flat pad an additional foot (I'm guessing, maybe more). Numerous easy ways to keep the ramps stationary with a little forethought.

  • @joracer1
    @joracer1 Před rokem +1

    They were made for someone that's careful not reckless, those look very similar to normal ramps, one you need to go easy, two you need to have someone watching. Those have larger stops than lesser ramps. Could they be build better? I'd say yes, are they ok? I'd say yes. Why not use regular ramps. Imo those are way over priced, and there's no need for the jack.

      The whole idea was to use them to raise the front of my Tacoma up high enough to get under it to do an oil change. I am not careless and have used ramps in the past many times. The design was not made for using on pickups because the tire plate was much too small for truck size tires.
      Over all a bad design. I have worked on every car/truck that I owned, and in my 74 years I have worked on a lot of them using ramps.

  • @roseymalino9855

    Some people shouldn't be using ramps. Using ramps requires some common sense and good judgement such as easy does it on first use to get the feel of them.

    • @nmsidewinder
      @nmsidewinder  Před rokem +1

      In my past 73 years, 40 years of that working on my cars and trucks, I can say that I have used many different types of car ramps and know how to use them. However, using the ramps in the video is the first time I have had any problems. The tire crib or plate the tire is supposed to stop on to hold the vehicle up was to short for the tire size of my pickup. Add to that the stop bar was to low. Normally you can feel the tire hitting or touching the stop bar and stop the vehicle on the tire crib plate. The design of these ramps allow the ramp to roll forward tipping the ramp over easily. These are the worst ramps I had ever used, and dangerous.

      @@nmsidewinder My beginnings of working on cars 62 years ago, I used cinder blocks and tree sections for jack stands. My first ramps were a luxury but a major safety improvement. However, I was aware of what to expect when the vehicle moved forward 6" or 1 ft. I didn't rely on some little edge to stop. I relied on my ability to tell when I moved the vehicle the 8" length of the ramp platform. I didn't rely on 25 ib ramps to stay stationary when pushed by a 3000 ib vehicle.

  • @learningfishwithsephirajus1574

    Why didn't you video going the ramp so we can see what happens 🤔 did you just happen to have a bad experience I watched 4 different videos on CZcams with the same Jack being used and there was no issues Just wondering I've had a bad experience with things and was p***** because nobody didn't think about it and everybody I know had nothing but good things to say about it Not saying you're lying or anything but Just a thought

    • @nmsidewinder
      @nmsidewinder  Před rokem

      I was using my handheld Vado pocket camera and on top of that my pickup was having issues with making it up the ramps. The clutch was starting to over heat. It took me 2 tries to get the truck up the ramps. The ramps weren't sliding it was I was being very careful not to over shoot the tire pan. These ramps are not made for truck tires, the tire pan is too short and the ramps kick forward too easy. I don't know what videos you watched but I'd be willing to bet they use cars in the videos. If I had a car with smaller size tires perhaps it would be a different story.

    These things are Mickey Mouse quality I hope you get all your money back plus the damage to your truck! Id talk to the store manager tell him he needs to stop selling junk which are safety hazards as well!

      I wasn't able to take them back for a refund because they were damaged while trying to use them. And trying to get HD to pay for the damage to my truck would have cost me more money to hire a lawyer , money that I couldn't afford on my very limited income.
      So, this is just another hard lesson in life. Look before you leap, or beware of junk made in China.

      Hi Adam, thanks for the comment.
      They really are junk. After re-reading the Product Instruction page that came with the ramps I found this:
      1. For safely, (they meant safety), this product is limited to use for vehicles of less than 2 tons..
      So the bottom line is: The ramp(s) aren't even rated at 2 tons per ramp. What a rip off.
      I posted a review with Home Depot about the ramps and they " declined " my review stating that it " violates community guidelines ". What a hoot. And I can not take the ramps back for a refund because they are considered " 3rd party " seller.
      Of course they don't mention any of that when they sell them to you. What a rip off.
      Thanks again for the comment.
