- Ultra-rare WWII bombers take to the skies together on Saturday at the 2022 Spirit of St. Louis Airshow in Chesterfield, Missouri. Enjoy low flybys from the Boeing B-29 Superfortress "Doc" (one of two flying), Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress "Yankee Lady" (one of about nine flying), and the world's only flying P4BY Privateer, developed from the B-24 Liberator.

I was there! The St.Louis County Air Show 2022. That was a fantastic air show. B-29's are always very impressive to see. The B-17 Flying Fortress and P4BY Privateer are just as impressive. On top of those old WWII U.S. warbirds, we had a DeHaviland Mosquite, a Hawker Huricane, and a Supermarine Spitfire in D-Day markings. That was only about half of the legacy airshow. Then the icing on top of the cake was the U.S.Navy Blue Angels flying F/A-18's produced right here in St. Louis. Can't Wait For Next Year!!!!! 😜😝🤗😀
I absolutely love the airplanes...but wow
Nothing more beautiful than classic aircraft in bare metal color!
Those are the sounds of FREEDOMS. May God bless our military and this great nation.
Just 12-13 short years ago Doc was in many pieces. They didn't know if and when it would return to the air where it belongs. But perseverance paid off. So nice it has joined the legendary Fifi to be the second flying B-29. I've ridden on a B-17 and it's an experience any old airplane buff would love. I think in the 1960s thru the 1980s there were several of the P4BY Liberators flying as firefighter bombers (one crashed in Arizona in 1974) They are a sight to see fly.
Awesome sight. And the sound gave me goosebumps. Big Like!
The B-29 looks so incredibly sleek.
☮
I saw this in person, Doc always gets me 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Second bomber is a pb4y2
I thought the tail looked a little funny for a B-24! The front, yes. The back . . . something else!
I like the heavy sound of multi-engine reciprocating engines.
Thank the Lord that these old ladies can still fly and aren't scrapped
These first three four-prop planes sound like little two seaters. I was lucky enough and honored to fly in the Collings Foundation’s Nine-O-Nine B-17. RIP
Actually that is a PB4Y Privateer a Navy derivative of the B-24
I’ve been inside of doc!! What an amazing plane!!!
I'm no expert. But none of those planes were B-24s
Exactly they need a different announcer the planes name is pb4y privateer
@@Kanyeyeplamondon yes
He made the misidentification earlier, but later does name it correctly at 3:25
Maybe he was talking about it being derived from the Liberator, because as the engines begin to drown him out, I'm sure I heard PB4Y @ 0:47. So maybe he was talking about the development of the PB4Y. We didn't quite hear all he said.
@LMG Bunker Nope sorry. Coast guard is written on the side, and it has the side viewing windows, the B-32 did not. Also 6302 is the only flying PB4Y left. Both are based on the B-24 though.
The cool thing is that when you listen to the video with the Bass turn on it actually sound like you are there
We have a PBY4 parked currently in what remains of Henry Fords Willow Run plant. He did make the distinction during his description of the aircraft and the two variants.
That B17 is in our collection also, Yankee Lady. We are lucky to be so close to history, with allot of work from dedicated folks who mostly volunteer.
What an impressive flight of nostalgia. Too bad Collings Foundation couldn't have brought their B-24 to complete the program. I haven't seen the PB4Y flying before.... As usual your videography is great. Nice posting.
That so called b-24 is a privateer
Impressive sight of the B-29. I likely saw the same beast flying by where I work after I got off. I saw the familiar profile in the distance, dark against the clouds.
Semper Paratus! Great to see some Coast Guard representation. I once worked with a gentleman who was aircrew on a Coast Guard B-17!
Yankee Lady (the B-17 in this video) previously served with the USCG too!
likes them all but the B-17 always puts a big smile on my face, you think that B-29 is something you should see the B-36 Peacemaker !
Music to my ears❤❤❤❤❤
Thank heaven the "That's all folks" commentator either shut up just in time or was drowned out by the engines
I love these old birds.
If only airshow organizers would realize that people don't want to hear announcers yammering on about whatever comes into their heads, but would much rather just hear the airplanes! Future airshow people: Shut off your loudspeakers! You're not going to improve on the sounds that the airplanes are making!
Thank you! You are speaking my RANT for so many airshows! Also, often there'll be someone filming from a phone and right next to him, people in the audience will be chattering loudly as a plane flies by. Shut up, I need to hear the pistons and props!
Until watching your excellent video, I’d never heard of a Privateer, much less seen one. Some wonderful aircraft as usual, really enjoy your videos.
Fantastic footage, Thanks for filming.
It’s a PB4Y2 Privateer!
Great video!! Thank you very much by not placing hokey music over the sounds of the aircraft engines!!
I'm probably not the first to comment this, but the plane at 0:54 is a B-32 Dominator, or a PB4Y-2. The B-24 Liberator has twin tails, while the B-32/PB4Y-2 has a single tail.
It’s a PB4Y-2 Privateer. The Privateer and Dominator were two different aircraft, the B32 was a fair bit bigger and very much heavier sadly no B32 Dominators escaped being scrapped so none survive today
I love the ironic wobble from the b17
Hello. Awesome warbirds! 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
The sound of those Twin Wasp!
Love it !!!!
B-24 liberators had twin tails. You’d think airshow announcers would at least know that they are talking about
Airshow announcers are almost universally terrible. Kinda just the rule with them 💀
Most current airshow announcers are obnoxious and only care about their ego.
PB4Y-2 🗿
they probably looked up PB4Y and saw the PB4Y-1 which is literally a B-24 they renamed
Exactly!!!!! I didn't think that was a B-24
@@Bimmerguy88 The last true B-24 (that isn't a conversion into the standard B-24) is the Collings Foundation B-24J Witchcraft.
I'm surprised that there is even a single privateer still flying today
RIP Texas Raiders.💔🙏💔🙏
Those were some Magnificent Airplanes and some Magnificent Men who Crewed them as well !!! That B-24 Liberator was one Mean Looking Airframe , Just Absolutely Beautiful !!!! It's a Shame that Hundreds of these WW2 Airplanes , the Bombers and Fighters , were not Saved and Restored for their Historical Significance !!! We will be Sorry for that Foolish Blunder , in so many ways !!
That is a PB4Y-2G Privateer, not a B-24 Liberator. The B-24 is a twin tailed bomber powered by four Pratt&Whitney R-1830 Twin Wasp 14 Cylinder Radials, this aircraft was designed to be a low, to medium altitude Patrol Bomber, with non turbo-supercharged Wasp-14's, but, during its time as a Fire Bomber, stocks of the non turbo-supercharged engines dried up, so the plane was reengined with the same engine that powers the B-25: The Wright R-2600 Twin Cyclone, which also powers the Avenger, and Helldiver bombers.
@@johnosbourn4312 OK !! I Stand Corrected !!! But it's Close Enough to a B-24 for me !!! 👍😄 I think they're all just amazing machines !!! I saw 6 to 8 of them fly by our Home when I was a small boy back in the 50's , they were so low that I could plainly make out the Nicknames Painted on the Fuselage below the Pilots Cockpits !!!! My knees were trembling like crazy as they Roared by !!! That was a Sight I will Never Forget as long as I live !!
was a great airshow, I was a few rows of people behind you
Nice video 👍 🎥
Cor blimey, some lovely lovely flying, something to see for real would be nicer.
Clicked on the video to see that Privateer. Only to hear it called B24.
Naizzz!
That one bomber looked like a b-32 dominator I did not know any of those were still in existence
I wish my father in law had lived to see that Privateer fly again. He trained as a gunner and bomb-aimer (no Norden bombsight. He said they trained far too low for it to be of any use.) He used to drop dummy bombs on whales off Florida. Then the atomic bombs were dropped and they were all spared the invasion of Japan for which they were trained.
B 24 with a B 17 tail?
THATS A PRIVATEER BY CONSOLADATED
They should open the bomb bay doors on the flyby.
No B 24 s but a Navy version of it , a PB 4Y2
Funny looking b24....
Despite being a war plane, the B-29 is one of the finest aircraft ever built. Is that at 4:44 the polished 'FiFi'?
Nope! That one is Doc
Good Video/Beautiful Vintage Aircraft !!!!!!.....I WAS'NT HAPPY ABOUT THE B-24 MISSING ALL OF ITS GUNS !!!!!....IT ALSO LOOKED LIKE THE B-29 WAS MISSING ITS LOWER BALL TURRENT!!!!!!.....STILL THEY WERE BEAUTIFUL,SOMEWHAT FULLY RESTORED AIRCRAFT !!!!!!!
B-29 didn't have *any* ball turrets; all turrets were remotely-operated twin-axis turrets. That said, this one has *none* of it's turrets installed; only the gunner's sighting bubbles. The aircraft probably served as a cargo, fueler (KB-29), or long range recon aircraft (RB-29 or WB-29) postwar and/or served SAC postwar, when the turrets were largely removed to improve range, speed, and altitude, as they were determined to be of limited use against jet aircraft. There were also B-29s produced in WW2 that had only the tail guns and no turrets, but those aircraft did not include the gunner's sighting stations or the bubble windows at the gunner stations. These were known as B-29B.
The silverplate B-29s (the ones that were modified to carry early nuclear bombs) also had their turrets removed.
This aircraft, "Doc", was produced too late to see combat in WW2 and was converted for use as a radar target aircraft and training bomber, for which there was no need of turrets).
I'm just here for all the comments about how TWICE during takeoff the Privateer was called a B24 😂
For the record, WE know it's a Privateer :)
You are only hearing bits and pieces of the announcers narration. He was describing the lineage of the Privateer in detail, and never once calls this particular plane a B-24. Airshow Stuff was right there.. you'd think they would correct all the announcer bashing.

Thanks for muting blabber mouth when ya could. Do these motor mouths not realize nobody really needs to hear their gums flappin when the flyings happening?
was the privateer a firebomber?
Yes
The bombers are faster than you might think.
B-24 engines sound like their having a hard time.
No b24 there
@@mickkidder6451 You know what I meant Ass. PB4Y-1.
Why weren't any B-29 sent to Europe during the war?
Every one of them were needed in the Pacific Theater because they were the only plane with the range to bomb Japan.
Also, by the time it reached operational service in mid 44, Germany was well on the decline and there were more than enough American and British bombers available to finish the job.
@@mikearmstrong8483 thank you. 👍🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Great show and excellent video work. But in behalf of all airshow fans everywhere to those announcers who apparently are paid by the word: SHUT THE HECK UP!!!! You don't have to talk nonstop; people would like to hear the sounds of these aircraft without your metallic echoing voice droning on and on!
Fairly egregious error with the ID of the PB4Y Privateer. Not your doing but a nice video, though.
Not a B-24! a Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer!
A post war Consolidated PB 4Y2!
Jeeze!

Why do announcers keep yammering DURING the flybys? I appreciate a good narrative but I go to see and hear these birds for what they are, not to listen to some guy
First
The plane after the B-29 , might be the B-32 Dominator
Privateer wings and forward fuselage is the B-24 and the tail came from the B-32 Dominator.
There aren't any surviving examples of the B-32 unfortunately.
That's a Consolidated PB4Y-2 Privateer. The number on the tail is "6302", which I think means the aircraft is 66302 based out of Casa Grande, Arizona.
Still cool looking… I wonder how long before the millennials don’t care… like old steam trains, will they go away?
