I never take a treat bag on walks and yet didn’t have to train anything like this for my dogs to walk loose leash. ?! I have learned how to communicate with my dogs and they have learned to listen, which makes quite a bit of difference. No yanking no cranking required.

@@BDTraining my dog is pretty good but he has a tendency to rush up to people that we know. neighbors etc and he stops listening, any tips for this? i try to tell people to not encourage it, but people cant help patting, and it feels like he is getting rewarded for not listening. it can also happen in situations with a lot of free dogs, at beaches etc where suddenly everyone is his new best mate and its hard to get a recall to override his socializing
GREAT VIDEO JOEL AS ALWAYS! My (VERY LIVELY) 3 year old Golden had never been walked on a leash until I re-homed him when he was 8 months, consequently it’s been a challenge although right now he’s much improved, doorway method and on the drive perfect but as we progress on the walk he tends to deteriorate, I guess due to the many different smells etc. I use the ‘leave’ method plus if he starts to pull a bit I stop and he does too, no problem but then when I release him he immediately pulls again….I stop and repeat many times….! Any advice Joel…or anyone else would be welcome. All the best from Cambridge UK 🇬🇧

This video is brilliant - I work in rehoming rescue dogs and I am going to share this video with all the fosters and adopters - they all struggle with loose lead walking and then wonder why the dogs misbehaves in other ways. Thanks Joel - you have improved the dogs' life so much with your advice.
IMO as someone who fosters a lot of dogs, Joel is the best trainer. None of his methods are overly adversive (no prong or ecollars), but he acknowledges issues and corrects behavior, rather than just shaping behavior with treats.

These methods work and now my (formerly reactive) Boston and I have the best relationship. Her life has 10Xed. No more worries about her flying out the door to terrorize the neighborhood. I trust her to be loose in the yard with me and she just watches dogs, pedestrians, cyclists go by. And how nice to not carry treats everywhere 😅 It all starts before you even leave your house!
Although English is not my first language, all your videos on the door method and loose leash walking and simple corrective stops have changed my life and my dog's life. She is a 7 month old girl from a Croatian rescue shelter and she used to pull me like an Idita Rod Champion every time. What can I say... it all went away in an instant! In about 2 days and 3 walks a day. I now have 90% of her focus on me and we just enjoy our walks. It's the method and your clear verbal and body language that both I and my dog understand. Crystall clear communication, no Chi Chi. Thank you Joel, great job! And I don't care if she doesn't want to experience the go get method in 2 months time, because it could be a matter of life and death.

I have moved in with my daughter and assumed most of the care of a 6 year old bully/ pit mix. She is very sweet. I can’t take her to walk because she saw a cat and I was on the ground! I would love to be able to walk this very strong dog.
I got my re-home Boston 7 weeks ago, and I've watched 100's of videos from different trainers (including yourself). This video fits "exactly" what I want.
Just tried this today and HUGE difference! We live in a gated community with dogs barking everywhere so I can't even step outside the door without him getting reactive and riled up. Went back to basics and started right out the door. He was so focused on me walking back and forth and making sure the leash didn't get taut that he had no time to react to the other dogs! Like you said, it's not perfect and he'll have his moments but I can see how to him, he has something else to focus on and I slowly felt the shift of who's leading who. We walked around within the community together for the first time without my hand hurting and him being slightly more relaxed 😭 🙌

Go on lots of walks might seem like obvious advice but most of my clients who have trouble walking their dogs don’t do it very much. Practice makes perfect. For you and the dog!
😂😂 🤣 I am jealous of those clients! I live in a large condo building where the only dogs allowed entrance is literally three blocks away from the door where we exit. Add in the inevitable detour to avoid the inevitable aggressively reactive toy dog and our shortest potty break ends up being 6-8 blocks. Ahh…the joys of urban dog life.
To be honest I wouldn't walk my dog as much if I didn't train him to be off leash from a pup age. He is such a chill dog because his mind and body is mostly free. It freaks a lot of people out though that don't understand he's not going to bolt across the road and attack their dog because their dog wants to do that to him. And not even across the road but on the same side. He knows they want to attack him and he doesn't want a part of it so takes a wide berth.

Idk if you phrased it this exact way in a past video, but my take away was: It’s about tension not leash length. Whenever I’m walking my husky I try to keep that in mind how far/close w want him and how much leash he needs to get there. Whether he can go to the end for a potty break or if I want him in heel position he’s gotta keep the tension loose! He’s pretty good about going through the door, especially on leash. I should probably stop letting him zoom out, with permission, when he’s tethered to his zip line 😅.

I’ve done nearly exactly this for three dogs. Quite literally, they were completely trustworthy in three weeks or so. Two of them wer essentially the same mix as my current dog, “arctic shepherds” as I call them. My current dog not so much. His radar is always on out on walks. Correct gently, and praise when ignoring things, but he’s so exuberant, especially when seeing other dogs. He’s a whole lot better than he was when I got him, but I still have a lot of work to do…. patience, patience, patience.
Yes, I use your doorway method. I also said the word 'wait'. My dog thought that would be a good idea when I tried to let it out for free play off-leash. 'Hmm, I'll sit in the doorway and use it as a disguise in order to ambush squirrels'. That means me holding the door open and letting the cold air in. The only way I can remedy this 'wait' tactic is to throw a small treat out and say, 'go.' With my breed you also have to try to be cheerful with them which is sometimes hard to pull off. Yes, it's important to be 'the boss' but realistically with some breeds it's a detante. Super cute personality with Jeff' you can tell he wants to be a movie-star. Ruff-ruff🐿

This method is very effective and it teaches the dog to make good decisions. I use it with doors, gates and other places because it can safe the dog's life. Treats don't obligate the dog to follow, pressure on the leash and corraction bring obligation, and then a lot of praise and treats. My malinois taught me that. I don't have problems but I like to watch your films. Very good film and explanation :)

2:34. I am one of the people who has been doing this wrong (though my dog is generally pretty OK on a leash). This made so much sense. Great explanation.
Between this and your video coaching the lady with the great dane i must say my 6.5 month pup has improved 10x. Some mistakes i was making: My door method was not working because my apartment exits to the balcony then stairs leading to sidewalk. Doing the doorway method upstairs but the dog would rush the stairs and leave me at the sidewalk. I'm now enforcing calmness in the stairs and on that last step. I was not consistent enough with the leash corrections and the turning away. Sometimes you have to commit to looking like a maniac. I was focussing on the walk and the destination. Big mistake. I did not have high value treats. I'm using ground beef now and my dog is now listening VERY carefully now. All of these combined made my dog ignore previous triggers like kids, squirrels and other dogs. She still gets crazy when she sees friends but she's able to snap out of it and focus on me. Thought i would live with a dog randomly lunging at things all my life. OVER IT!! THANK YOU SIR!
I need to build up to this! Im struggling w the same. doorway kinda ok but almost pulling me down the stairs and at the outside door the last step n flying is really hard. Also when he sees dogs.. itsa nightmare even tho i treat him when he looks away n i correct him. the problem is we have very narrow sidewalks thru the city center n i cant avoid dogs like this -except going on the other side of the street.
Real question for HYPER dogs. My dog is SO into sniffing that I feel like we will NEVER BE able to leave my property without pulling. Literally as soon as we get to the end of the driveway, and I've been working on this for a year. So, how quickly do you see progress with this method with really hyper dogs?
I trained him as a puppy to ask before sniffing gets what he wants. He is required to pass behind me if I allow him to my right. Sniffing IS the treat/positive re enforcement. I ENJOYED (so did he) the process which people forget to do.
Chip has learned over the years that so long as he's moving on a forward-ish tack, he can pretty much sniff and pee and explore as he will but what I absolutely will not accept is scavving, lunging and doing a 180. Even without Joel's training, his first tip is absolutely key: go on a ton of walks with your dog. Eventually, they'll figure it out and you'll figure out how much wiggle room they should have. Chip not only knows I'm lenient. He knows my roommate and my wife are varying degrees of NOT lenient. 99% of dogs are not dumb.
I am not against treats, but I do agree that you just don’t give them to the dog to make them do something - it has to be as a reward for doing the correct thing.

Can I be vulnerable for a moment? I’ve exhausted every method of leash training & keeping my dog’s focus. I feel like I am failing my dog and it’s very upsetting bc I know that I’m doing everything right (at least I believe that I am). Has he gotten better? Definitely! He’s improved a lot in many ways, but the pulling/obsessive sniffing absolutely has not ceased. The stopping, sniffing & pulling almost feels compulsive and my corrections just do not even register as corrections w him. It doesn’t phase him 90% of the time and if they are effective, it has no actual effect on him just doing it 5-10 steps right after. Just about everyday, I take him on an hr-2hr walk and I implement EVERYTHING i’ve learned from this channel and others. I’m 4 months into this and I’m ready to throw my hands up in defeat. I am genuinely worried about his trachea potentially being damaged at this point. How do I properly identify when I am not the issue and I just need to use a different tool such as a prong?
It has been so drilled into my head that “i’m just not doing it right” when I am struggling w training, Im having a hard time accepting that maybe it’s my tool of choice and dog. ):
Far out man, you know this is so true, I had problems getting my dog to focus on the walk with me until 2 weeks ago when I -1: stopped going to the park and walked him directly for a 1 km to the shops instead, then 2: I enforced a no stopping, no marking, no distraction rule, popped the leash over and over patiently , 3: I started using an E collar utilising the vibration button with verbal commands then took away the verbal commands and vibration and enforced my body language As his guide, 4: I used a long leash and rewarded him with the free command every 10 to 15 minutes so he does whatever he wants, 5: I made sure that he always returned to the “heel” command and beside me, and 6: i randomised the order of the walk and threw in different commands and avoided excessive verbal rewards before I completely eliminated them for the free command, this all started with watching your recall video in similar setting to this one, he’s not allowed to run out , and must return on command, this now 1 year old Malinoise is the challenge I never expected, but the reward I absolutely appreciate. And I removed all toy/food rewards a long long time ago as in your many video suggestions for a more naturally obedient dog. I now walk relaxed listening to my podcasts and without stressing and worrying if I see another dog/bike/ cat/ scooter/ poison or crazy kids 😊

I now call doing those turns in seemingly random directions, "crazy walk." It's very effective in getting our 2 year old Corso's attention before a walk, and we find ourselves needing to do it less and less.

Great video. Hope you can show one with a crazy out of control dog like mine. Makes walking almost unbearable. Got the Martendale collar on, zap collar on and gentle lead. My dog looks like Mrs. T! People prob think I’m nutz. My dog is terrible on the leash. Pulls me down the street and gets a little better once we walk for a while. I am going to try the things you put on this video. That was was a dream compared to my dog.
Working on the walk by me or just behind me trying to make her sit before we leave or go back inside. Getting my dog to keep attention on me is just being started

@@robin212212 well as I saw it and I am a dog trainer that dog doesn’t look like it’s the type to overpower its owner I guess unless the owner is 85 pounds and senior citizen with bad hands It’s not a typical Beckman type of dog. He usually trains and that makes me happy because I love seeing very nice, sweet, gentle, kind dogs.
I have a year and a half golden. We rescued him at 6 months. I worked with him a lot but the pulling is so challenging. Living in a city doesn’t help when there’s so much distractions. I will have to try this method. I never seen this and i hope it work. Im open to other suggestions to. Thanks
The Method is excatly how our ancestor made them our best friend. It's not about being cruel to an animal to get them to do what you want. It is about setting boundaries. In a few houndred thousand years dogs will evolve too. I hope we can have a healthy livining together Sorry for my bad english, isnt my native language.

Add in the inevitable detour to avoid the inevitable aggressively reactive toy dog and our shortest potty break ends up being 6-8 blocks. Ahh…the joys of urban dog life.
To be honest I wouldn't walk my dog as much if I didn't train him to be off leash from a pup age. He is such a chill dog because his mind and body is mostly free. It freaks a lot of people out though that don't understand he's not going to bolt across the road and attack their dog because their dog wants to do that to him. And not even across the road but on the same side. He knows they want to attack him and he doesn't want a part of it so takes a wide berth.

This video is really needed for me, i have a 14 year old female dog and she isnt pulling but constantly infront and her attention is every where else but with us when we walk and we walk 5 times a day approx 2-4 hours. thanks for this very educational video Mr. Beckman!

Idk if you phrased it this exact way in a past video, but my take away was: It’s about tension not leash length. Whenever I’m walking my husky I try to keep that in mind how far/close w want him and how much leash he needs to get there. Whether he can go to the end for a potty break or if I want him in heel position he’s gotta keep the tension loose! He’s pretty good about going through the door, especially on leash. I should probably stop letting him zoom out, with permission, when he’s tethered to his zip line 😅.

I’ve done nearly exactly this for three dogs. Quite literally, they were completely trustworthy in three weeks or so. Two of them wer essentially the same mix as my current dog, “arctic shepherds” as I call them.
My current dog not so much. His radar is always on out on walks. Correct gently, and praise when ignoring things, but he’s so exuberant, especially when seeing other dogs.
He’s a whole lot better than he was when I got him, but I still have a lot of work to do…. patience, patience, patience.
Yes, I use your doorway method. I also said the word 'wait'. My dog thought that would be a good idea when I tried to let it out for free play off-leash. 'Hmm, I'll sit in the doorway and use it as a disguise in order to ambush squirrels'. That means me holding the door open and letting the cold air in. The only way I can remedy this 'wait' tactic is to throw a small treat out and say, 'go.' With my breed you also have to try to be cheerful with them which is sometimes hard to pull off. Yes, it's important to be 'the boss' but realistically with some breeds it's a detante. Super cute personality with Jeff' you can tell he wants to be a movie-star. Ruff-ruff🐿

This method is very effective and it teaches the dog to make good decisions. I use it with doors, gates and other places because it can safe the dog's life. Treats don't obligate the dog to follow, pressure on the leash and corraction bring obligation, and then a lot of praise and treats. My malinois taught me that. I don't have problems but I like to watch your films. Very good film and explanation :)

2:34. I am one of the people who has been doing this wrong (though my dog is generally pretty OK on a leash). This made so much sense. Great explanation.
Between this and your video coaching the lady with the great dane i must say my 6.5 month pup has improved 10x. Some mistakes i was making:
My door method was not working because my apartment exits to the balcony then stairs leading to sidewalk. Doing the doorway method upstairs but the dog would rush the stairs and leave me at the sidewalk. I'm now enforcing calmness in the stairs and on that last step.
I was not consistent enough with the leash corrections and the turning away. Sometimes you have to commit to looking like a maniac. I was focussing on the walk and the destination. Big mistake.
I did not have high value treats. I'm using ground beef now and my dog is now listening VERY carefully now.
All of these combined made my dog ignore previous triggers like kids, squirrels and other dogs. She still gets crazy when she sees friends but she's able to snap out of it and focus on me.
Thought i would live with a dog randomly lunging at things all my life. OVER IT!! THANK YOU SIR!
I need to build up to this! Im struggling w the same. doorway kinda ok but almost pulling me down the stairs and at the outside door the last step n flying is really hard.
Also when he sees dogs.. itsa nightmare even tho i treat him when he looks away n i correct him. the problem is we have very narrow sidewalks thru the city center n i cant avoid dogs like this -except going on the other side of the street.
Real question for HYPER dogs. My dog is SO into sniffing that I feel like we will NEVER BE able to leave my property without pulling. Literally as soon as we get to the end of the driveway, and I've been working on this for a year. So, how quickly do you see progress with this method with really hyper dogs?
I trained him as a puppy to ask before sniffing gets what he wants. He is required to pass behind me if I allow him to my right. Sniffing IS the treat/positive re enforcement. I ENJOYED (so did he) the process which people forget to do.
Chip has learned over the years that so long as he's moving on a forward-ish tack, he can pretty much sniff and pee and explore as he will but what I absolutely will not accept is scavving, lunging and doing a 180. Even without Joel's training, his first tip is absolutely key: go on a ton of walks with your dog. Eventually, they'll figure it out and you'll figure out how much wiggle room they should have. Chip not only knows I'm lenient. He knows my roommate and my wife are varying degrees of NOT lenient. 99% of dogs are not dumb.
I am not against treats, but I do agree that you just don’t give them to the dog to make them do something - it has to be as a reward for doing the correct thing.

Can I be vulnerable for a moment? I’ve exhausted every method of leash training & keeping my dog’s focus. I feel like I am failing my dog and it’s very upsetting bc I know that I’m doing everything right (at least I believe that I am). Has he gotten better? Definitely! He’s improved a lot in many ways, but the pulling/obsessive sniffing absolutely has not ceased. The stopping, sniffing & pulling almost feels compulsive and my corrections just do not even register as corrections w him. It doesn’t phase him 90% of the time and if they are effective, it has no actual effect on him just doing it 5-10 steps right after. Just about everyday, I take him on an hr-2hr walk and I implement EVERYTHING i’ve learned from this channel and others. I’m 4 months into this and I’m ready to throw my hands up in defeat. I am genuinely worried about his trachea potentially being damaged at this point. How do I properly identify when I am not the issue and I just need to use a different tool such as a prong?
It has been so drilled into my head that “i’m just not doing it right” when I am struggling w training, Im having a hard time accepting that maybe it’s my tool of choice and dog. ):
Far out man, you know this is so true, I had problems getting my dog to focus on the walk with me until 2 weeks ago when I -1: stopped going to the park and walked him directly for a 1 km to the shops instead, then 2: I enforced a no stopping, no marking, no distraction rule, popped the leash over and over patiently , 3: I started using an E collar utilising the vibration button with verbal commands then took away the verbal commands and vibration and enforced my body language As his guide, 4: I used a long leash and rewarded him with the free command every 10 to 15 minutes so he does whatever he wants, 5: I made sure that he always returned to the “heel” command and beside me, and 6: i randomised the order of the walk and threw in different commands and avoided excessive verbal rewards before I completely eliminated them for the free command, this all started with watching your recall video in similar setting to this one, he’s not allowed to run out , and must return on command, this now 1 year old Malinoise is the challenge I never expected, but the reward I absolutely appreciate.
And I removed all toy/food rewards a long long time ago as in your many video suggestions for a more naturally obedient dog. I now walk relaxed listening to my podcasts and without stressing and worrying if I see another dog/bike/ cat/ scooter/ poison or crazy kids 😊

I now call doing those turns in seemingly random directions, "crazy walk." It's very effective in getting our 2 year old Corso's attention before a walk, and we find ourselves needing to do it less and less.

Great video. Hope you can show one with a crazy out of control dog like mine. Makes walking almost unbearable. Got the Martendale collar on, zap collar on and gentle lead. My dog looks like Mrs. T! People prob think I’m nutz. My dog is terrible on the leash. Pulls me down the street and gets a little better once we walk for a while. I am going to try the things you put on this video. That was was a dream compared to my dog.

We don’t know the needs or situation of this golden’s owner(s) for training, but I agree, this lovely dog is well ahead of many we’ve seen here.
a lot of times dogs can sense the leadership quality of the handler (mostly via body language); the dog could have been a terror when with his owner.
@@topcatwarrior yes most dogs should act like this when totally trained, and some dogs are like this genetically Bread some dogs are really hard and some dogs are very easy and this one is definitely an easy one. What a good boy he is.

It’s not a typical Beckman type of dog. He usually trains and that makes me happy because I love seeing very nice, sweet, gentle, kind dogs.

I have a year and a half golden. We rescued him at 6 months. I worked with him a lot but the pulling is so challenging. Living in a city doesn’t help when there’s so much distractions. I will have to try this method. I never seen this and i hope it work. Im open to other suggestions to. Thanks
The Method is excatly how our ancestor made them our best friend.
It's not about being cruel to an animal to get them to do what you want.
It is about setting boundaries. In a few houndred thousand years dogs will evolve too.
