  • Here’s my second attempt at a video essay (and I hope an improvement) in which I discuss the historical influences behind Dr. Ratio and Alhaitham. Also if anyone can explain to me why they both have a sims plumbob on their chests I would be grateful :)

    Notes:
    1) There are a multitude of factors that caused a dislike of Socrates, but, the well known story that is told and the way he has been characterized is what is important to this video.
    2) Something that is worth noting that I did not mention in the video is that when we refer to ancient Greek philosophy, there is dramatic variability in the opinions of these thinkers. These intricacies are not necessarily relevant to this video (as I doubt writers would have a super in depth understanding of these) and would take us down a whole new rabbit hole.
    3) I have been trying to make sense of why his ultimate line (which is so significant) is a reference to George Berkeley. Berkeley was a hardcore empiricist, so much so that he doubted the existence of a mind independent world. For him the only things that existed were ideas and minds. I think it is Berekley’s skepticism about an external world, rather than his empirical attitudes that are present in Dr. Ratio’s character.
Additionally It’s worth mentioning that while ancient Greek philosophy is Greek, it is also so much more. It is Greek because Athens functioned as a cultural hub due to its location on the Mediterranean and between so many different countries. It was a gathering place for ideas and because of this collaboration that the work that came out of it was of note.

THANK YOU im glad someone can see further than the shallow optics of "buff scholar". i mean, the comparison is what got me into star rail in the first place, but i'm glad that discussion is being had. i also wonder, one of ratio's defining characteristics is the fact that he wasn't gazed upon by nous (due, most likely by his belief that knowledge is for everyone and his pursuit to raise the floor and allow access for all), do you think alhaitham _could_ be chosen by nous if he were in star rail? he certainly has the intelligence and self centeredness for it. idk something i've been thinking about

Being tired of the excessive buff scholar comparisons is why I was inspired to make this video! Also that’s a really interesting question about nous, I think I agree that he fits the standard a lot better than ratio. I’ll have to think about that more.

Being chosen by Nous is not about being smart it's about pursuing a science without any care for anything else.

do you think alhaitham could be chosen by nous if he were in star rail?
Alhaitham has no ambition to be something more than he is, and he has no ambition to be recongnized for his intellect. He got his vision, and he kept it in a box, because he literally had no use for it. :) So even if he was chosen by nous, he porobably wouldn't care about it. Just like he didn;t really care when he got his vision, or when he was chosen to be the next Grand Sage.
He also has no ambition for sharing his knowledge. He will do it if specifically was asked by one of the people he considers to be close with (Collei, Paimon) but he doesn't go out of his way to 'spread' knowledge.

Pretty good video. I only wish it were longer. These characters are very interesting. Looking forward to your covering Eastern Philosophy in Genshin.

Thanks! I do see a lot of Eastern philosophy’s influences, but admittedly my knowledge of these philosophies is not as solid yet. I hope to work toward covering that eventually tho, a discussion centric video could work for a topic I’m not quite as familiar with!

Huh. This was actually a very interesting analisis.
Tho Alhaitham does put emphasis on the concept of 'truth' just like Ratio. Alhaitham does not make compromises regarding the 'truth' and he is considered an annoying/rude character because of this. He is not faraid to challenege/offend people to tell the truth, even tho he rarely goes out of his way todo so (regardless it happens very often)
This is why Alhaitham and Kaveh went their separate ways. Alhaitham did offend Kaveh pretty much with the truth.

I loved the analysis of this video between both characters, it was pretty interesting!! learned a lot from it, and I do like Dr. Ratio more, he seems more friendly than Alhaitham

They're not the same even though both are scholars. I prefer Alhaitham's personality much more than Dr. Ratio.
