Thank you so much for this great reaction! Dan has spoken about how he takes care of his voice. He warms up his voice the day before, sings the song, the next day he doesn't talk, to rest his voice.
Dan always gives his other singers credit in the video descrlptions. If he doesn't mention anyone else singing then it's just all him layered. You should listen to him do quite a respectful rendition of the Halelujah Chorus from Handel's Messiah!!! He IS the whole choir singing it! His Dan choir is all in little boxes singing it.

I drive from coastal MS to Vegas twice a year to see my son and his family (really my grandchildren 😂) and this summer after hearing this version i FELT these verses driving through the mountains and had to Bluetooth this song 50 times and belt it out as i drove thru the plains and mountains!! He has a well tuned diaphragm which allows him to finish the ending in one breath. Breathing through your diaphragm allows one to do the long breath parts.

Hello Again Ken! You always have unique reactions to Dan Vasc but, I think we all do because Dan is a completely unique artist!! His success speaks for itself. Sidenote, I love your tie-- all signs of Christmas are welcome on my phone! Love that you are so concerned about Dan's voice. I however, have every confidence that he has that completely under control. He has an E Book you would enjoy on the best ways for singers to care for their voices. His voice is his passion and livelihood and he is smarter than most in understanding all aspects of his craft. My money is on Dan to still be singing in 30 years!! It must be such a pleasure for a vocal expert like you to watch and analyze a guy like Dan with the voice he has.
About the tension, what i see is yes, he uses tension in his body to carry the power through to his voice, but when you then watch his vocal apparatus where it really matters, espacially the muscles in the throatarea, the larynx and jaws, there is very very rarely any tension no matter what he's doing with his voice, even though it's evident that he is actually singing, and not just lipsynching.
And as you say, Dan is not in trouble at all putting this kind of power out - he takes extremely good care of his voice and knows exactly what he's doing.
And yes, pretty much everything he does gesturewise is for show, due to the fact that he's a performer as much as he's a singer.

Dan has done a great deal of vocal training, so don’t worry too much. Even in relaxed videos, his posture is outstanding; I think it’s mostly just his natural stance.

I don't think (fingers crossed) that we need to worry about Dan's posture. Did you know that he used to give voice lessons himself? I think he's very self-aware on that score. BYW, he's meticulous about giving credit to anyone who works with him - a relic of his days as an exploited and uncredited session singer, I suspect. From the description on this video:

(Gabriel is the guitarist of Dan's band Fearless, and Gio is the drummer. The fourth member is Dan's brother Davi on bass. They're all terrific musicians. I think you reacted to their epic (😊) performance of "Dawn of Victory," with Fabio Leone, in Dan's garage. All the vocal arrangements are always his, and you're right, he often lets certain accompanists create their own parts. Looking forward to more Dan in 2024! About your comment towards the end, I’m also a singer myself and I’ve seen a few videos of Dan singing when he’s not in “performance mode”. In all of those videos, he was totally relaxed and there was no tension whatsoever. What he’s doing in his main videos is mainly for performance and I think he’s concentrating on grounding his breath support to the floor. Sometimes I’ll do a similar thing once in a while when I’m performing, but it’s particularly when my adrenaline gets going and I need extra breath support. I’m also a big stickler when it comes to technique and I take extremely good care of my voice.
Dan is not just a singer, he's a performer. His whole body is his instrument, not just his voice. He takes very good care of both.

Victor the Guitar Nerd takes care of any instrumental arrangements, mixing, etc specifically for the instruments that he’s playing, but the rest is Dan unless otherwise credited. All his most recent videos, he’s hired a professional to do the final polish of mixing or mastering or whatever for sound quality.
I believe Gabriel (friend and band ate from Fearless does the guitar work on this song. He was actually in 2022 Christmas video and I hope he is in this year’s video also.

Hi, Ken! Yes, I am watching this reaction video in late April. I don't care much about the ones who say "keep the Xmas songs in December," bc this music makes me happy no matter the season.
Anyway, you said that you didn't know how the "excelsis" was supposed to be pronounced. My late father, a musician, minister and stickler for correct pronunciation of liturgical Latin impressed on me, and any choristers he led, that the word "excelsis" is **never** pronounced as "egg-shell-sis", but rather "ex-cel-sees."
To help peeps remember this, think about the word "excelsior." Same Latin root and pronunciation of the "ex-cel" part, just different ending. Tbf, I'm sort of a stickler myself, being a musician and language nerd. 😅
Also, if you want more unique language-music experience, would love to see you react to Tommy Johanssen. He's from Sweden, is an amazing metal guitarist and singer, and has recorded tracks in his native Swedish and English. Like Dan, he's just plain phenomenal! His Swedish cover of "O Holy Night" ("O Helga Nått") is unreal, and his cover of Schubert's "Ave Maria" will have you reaching for the tissues. Well, at least I did, anyway. 😅 He's got other mind blowing covers as well. Do check him out if you haven't already -- and I love that tie! 😁
