You might remember that I've ditched my d-pads for KEYBOARD KEYS. Well, I finally took my favorite arcade stick, the 8bitdo Arcade Stick, and thanks to the help of OMNI Arcade, I was able to jam some keyboard keys in there with ease.

I like how Bob is talking like every beginner keyboard enthusiast. “This is the perfect...” three years from now it will be a crazy mess with custom printed ergonomic plates inserts and hot swappable switches.
And in my opinion low profile keys are not my cup of tea. Full fledged keys and thunderous clicky switches for me!!
i already ordered sanwa buttons 😬
@@WulffDen Where are you able to order from so fast? My usual place focus attack has been out of stock for what feels like months. Ive got sanwa buttons on back order at another place. Damn this pandemic! Shortages everywhere
It's 2077, mechanicals keyboards are being adored so much by humanity that any type of entertainment has mechanical inputs, even consoles, your TV remote and your phone's touchscreen is now a single clicky Cherry MX Blue switch.
Can you imagine? A true utopia

Instead of blues you should use Kailh box jades
Fight Sticks being easy to modify is very much the fun of owning them if you go to fighting game tournaments all the people with their custom fight sticks with like new buttons and a ball topper and art for the top panel is very nice to see

As somebody who is fairly involved in the fight stick community and modeling sticks, I can 100% attest that the Oden is the easiest, coolest, and most simple way of getting this approach. Great review, and I hope that it’ll give Omni some more publicity because the guys involved with it are super cool
You were killing it using that last night, also good choice on the name of the video 👍🏻
This was the best ad for Honey I’ve ever seen, I’m convinced
I finally downloaded a few months ago after seeing one of his Honey sponsored videos and it really is great. I've gotten a few coupons I never would've known about otherwise.
Unfortunately, it kinda sucks if you're not in the US. I'm in Germany and it's extremely rare that I save any money with it. Still, it's free :)
What’s Their incentive if it’s free? What do they get from it? I wouldn’t trust their word... “if you’re not paying, you’re the product”
@@ciggy_ Easy, it's the stores offering coupons and the like that are the ones paying. A percentage of your purchase amount goes to Honey. Stores get exposure and more sales, you get rebates. It's that simple.
Dont do it is malware
Awesome video!! Super happy you like the ODIN! I'm a huge fan of it too. It's such a highly innovative yet crazy simple product.
after a year of watching your videos about switches i finally bought one and it’s almost here!!

I've had the Odin for months now, it changed the way I play fighting games. The creators of the Odin are always on discord and super helpful. Amazing product.
From a guy who already has multiple fight sticks and plays a lot of 2D games on roms and has always loved fighters, you actually got me considering trying this keyboard key mod because it looks so easy. I dunno tho, I feel a lot of the magic of using a proper arcade stick will be lost
I'm still trying to wrap my head around the fact that this controller just kinda came out and is one of the most versatile fight sticks at a fraction of the cost of most entry level options. Sure, it's not perfect for everyone, but MAN the things you can do with this feel criminal.
I almost want to make a mini arcade machine with this thing lol.
do it
I was planning to make an arcade machine with just a cheap computer in side of a nice wooden shell using an emulator the part that was the most expensive was an arcade stick/buttons but the 8-bit do one would work great for it time to continue that dream
For anyone who doesn’t know- the way honey works is it gets a kick back from the website for helping someone buy something from their store.
they get money essentially for incentiving you to buy something.
Sort of like how an ad work, no?
@@Ironpecker Yep, it's affiliate marketing. Wether they make all their money from that we'll probably never know.
And it’s also likely that they sell your shopping data to various companies
@@miabryan7986 Yeah it's very likely, but then again amazon and lots of shopping sites also sell your data, they don't even gice you discounts.

now the fighting game players are never going to get an Omni pad huh
edit: nevermind, sharing the waiting list is a king move. God bless you Bob
Now change the main board inside the stick, the 8bitdo has a little over 100 ms input delay in switchmode (only switch mode, pc mode is fine with 30ms). I would suggest a brook universal fight board to mod into it and you'll be superfine (and super easy to do).
Is 30ms even acceptable? isn't wired like, 0? This is preventing me from bothering with wireless stuff.
BRO, I've been trying to get an Odin for over a year, of course they magically have one ready for a content creator...

Love it. I was already on the wait list. Got the email that I could order, was sent a paypal invoice, paid, already have a tracking number. This odin looks awesome, gonna pick up the Loki too.
How much are they?
@@matchesmalone79 think about 50 dollars? Honestly not bad since mixboxes are hella expensive generally
Holy cow, this is literally exactly my ideal one too. I need it.
If someone wants to buy this fight stick, the 30$ modification with an original Sanwa lever (adding cables it is around that) is really a worthwhile one. The original stick is too loose and will backfire every other time.
Other than that, the fight stick is one of the best for the Nintendo Switch, and the single best if you are interested in a wireless fight stick. Including this modification, at about 120$, it is still great.
its nice to see someone who was "the dpad makes or breaks the controller" allow their minds to open up to alternative possibilities.
I myself prefer the "touch dpad" of the steam controller ; customizeable deadzones and overlap regions allow me to basically set how sensitive the diagonals are to avoid accidental inputs, while still working similarly to a dpad by using the thumb.
It's a mixed blessing that the hitbox layout became so popular. It's an ingenious idea, and it established the idea of alternatives like mixbox. Yet at the same time, the original button layout of hitbox is incredibly cramped for no good reason, forces bad angles on wrists, and often leads to cramped up shoulders. But the popularity of hitbox lead to a bunch of clones or inspired controllers all copying that cramped button layout. I ended up building my own, increasing the distance between direction buttons and action buttons; just separating them by 5cm made a huge difference in posture. Regarding the directions when using hitbox and getting used to them, it pretty much makes no sense outside of classic fighters with up being jump. For me the trick to getting used to the hitbox layout was to think of it as duck and jump, instead of down and up. Some moves require a bit of mental translation, but the fighters I play really do not have many special moves involving the up direction. For using the hitbox on platformers, it would probably make more sense to just swap up and down. Sanwa buttons should allow those swaps, unless the cables are soldered directly instead of using friction fit connectors.
I could swap Up and Down in the ultimate software or in the Switch settings itself, but honestly i rarely ever press UP in Mario. Just to grab a VINE sometimes. It would be totally possible to get used to it, but I'm fine with what I've got
@@WulffDen Oh, sorry, this wasn't meant to be another "just get a hitbox" comment. I think it's great you built your own and customized another controller to work better for you. And made these videos about it, too. On another note, I've noticed increased fatigue in my finger joints after long periods of using arcade buttons compared to my everyday, all-day use of a keyboard with Cherry MX switches. Do you know of the O-ring trick for Cherry MX switches? Putting soft rubber O-rings on the stems in the keycap to reduce the bottom-out noise and impact force? It also ever so slightly reduces the travel and makes Cherry MX feel just a tiny bit more responsive.
before anyone buys this product, the macro functionality does NOT emulate analog movements, but only d-pad movements, so if you're going to use them for a game that doesn't use d-pad movement such as Smash Ultimate, then the macro feature will most likely be useless for said game.
that is my only complaint about the arcade stick. had this not been the issue, I'd be in love. still a solid product though, but it's most likely gonna take a huge amount of time getting used to if you've been using a gamecube-esque controller all your life.
Hey! A tip to make you have more rest area for your wrist. Pop it open, Glue stuck some magnets to the bottom.
Make your own wrist rest attachment as i am assuming no other keyboards wrist rest is high enough for the stick.
And slap in a magnet and there you go. a nice wrist rest.
My Dream controller: Pro style with the following: amiibo support, vibration that I can actually feel, motion control that actually works and, turbo support for all the buttons that allows turbo on more than one button at a time (that I can activate from a dedicated turbo button). Ideally it would wake up the Switch, too, but I can live without that.
I've been modding (moding?) my controllers so they have two switches and two buttons on them. The switches control the joystick press. In one position the joystick press works and the buttons don't, and in the other position the button does the joystick press and the joystick press itself doesn't work. I have one switch for each joystick. I do this because I have a tendency to start squeezing the controller when I get into combat situations, and end up pressing down on the joysticks. So, in Zelda for instance, I end up couching or looking through my slate in the middle of a battle. But with the joystick presses turned to the buttons, that doesn't happen, and when I need to crouch or look through the slate, I can.
Galarian Meowth is just like "come at me bro".
but why is this arcade stick so goddamn handsome
8bitdo makes good looking stuff
Those silver aluminum Joycons with the red body is so f#!$%! FIRE! I CANT TAKE IT, but refuse to spend $270 on a pair...ugh
I don’t know who told you that they cost that much. Mine came out to $127.58 total... I think it may cost that much if you have them assembled by Boxy Pixel themselves. They aren’t very hard to assemble in all honesty. Just time consuming I would say . It took me 1 and a half hours to do the left joycon and 2 hours for the right one. There weren’t any video tutorials available since I got a pair from the first batch. I did it from the text/picture tutorial they provided and they actually skipped over a few things but I figured it out and they work flawlessly and are worth every penny!!! :)
Now go use it finishing the remaining Ross’ levels. That’s gonna be the real test for this thing. As always, outstanding production quality. Keep it up man!
>best way to aim= Mouse
>best way to move in 3D= Left Thumbstick
>best way to play any game= wasd and arcade buttons, obviously
The intro song made me really sad. It's been so long since I've heard that used in a video. IYKYK :-(
I was wondering where I heard it from til the memories came flooding back. Huge F
It sounds like a remake of something but i can't figure it out
@@bland9876 It's a remixed version of the game over music for super mario world. But it was also the outro song for callmecarson, a youtuber I enjoyed who got cancelled and just disappeared from the face of the planet
I have a PDP Versus Wired Controller which has some really awsome microswitches in the D-Stick and the buttons so feels just like mech KB buttons, the d-stick feels just like a proper arcade joystick, so good for obviously fighting games, but also it's amazing for shmups, platformers and tons of arcade games on Mame for example, it's also perfect for Neo Geo games as it is identical to the Neo Geo original gamepad with its microswitches. Would relly love a retro handheld with a d-stick and mech buttons, a Joycon with a mech d-stick would be nice too.
Buying this shit right now for Celeste.
The Golden Strawberries I'm missing are going to be so much easier with Keyboard input.
Hmm, that'd be sweet if 8bitdo makes their own controller like this in the future. I'm ass at trying to take things apart and put things back together. But I would love playing games like this!
For those having problems using thumb for up on hitbox layout think of all the times you were playing on a pc and used... SPACE to jump
Now get some Gamerfinger or Crown/Samducksa 202 buttons so you can use mechanical MX switches in your buttons too!! Perfect upgrade since you haven't changed the buttons yet.
I'd say go for the Crown 202's since they're much easier to get at the moment. (ParadiseArcadeShop has some in stock)
Can't understand the desire to use keyboard keys for Mario and Smash. But hey, you do you.
for some games being able to hold back and forward at the same time. Like it makes it effortless to do forward back motions, pretty sure its less strain on your hand in the long run. honestly I never use it but it presents a competitive advantage in some situations. I know a certain fighting game players hitbox controller was banned for being unfair.
For me: keyboard inputs are not intuitive, take a ton of getting used to, and does not feel natural.
The 2 things that keyboard and mouse controls are severely lacking are analog control for the left stick, and constant rotation for right. Using WASD limits you to Dpad controls, and a mouse can only turn for as wide as your mouse pad is.
Sounds like you should try steams controller setup with the hybrid gyro thing, you just need any supported controller with a gyro .
This is what addiction looks like folks...
And I low key want in...
In regards to Honey, that old adage of "if it's free then you're the product".
Yup.
Also, for the brief time I tried Honey, it sure did waste a bunch of time scanning for codes, but it sure never found anything. I saved $0, wasted a bunch of time, and was their product. Uninstalled it, never again.
This seems like a GREAT tabletop pokemon controller! The switch can be pretty inconvenient when you want to reset or shiny hunt in pokemon while multitasking, so this could def make it easier!
Seimitsu buttons are thockier than Sanwa, but kind of a huge pain in the butt to find in the color-combo you want, or at all. But, if you like a more solid feel and a deeper sound, they are worth seeking out. Everyone loves Sanwa... But after you've used Seimitsu buttons (and sticks, for that matter), Sanwa will feel like cheap plastic mush (especially where the sticks are concerned! (out of the box)). Magnetic sensor analog joysticks though; omg they are cool. Being able to adjust the dead-zone, on the fly (via software), is like living in the future.
The fight pad looks good. The only problem I have with it is I like to use the arrow keys with my right hand.
That ODIN board is dope as fuck and I would support the hell out of that company if I had any need for their products
damn, a hit box conversion. dopest mod ive seen in a while.
With those arrows-directional keys, this is more a Mixbox than a HitBox.
Further info, when I was multimetering my 8bit do stick. It seemed like they were key scanning (the voltage value was floating around even without touching the button). so socd's are gonna have trouble if you try to change to mixbox buttons.
Happy to be proved wrong. Hoping 8BitDo release firm ware that provides compatibility with socd cleaner.
:0 I'm in love with that small "fight pad" at 1:02 what's the name of it!?
The Mayflash F500 is $50 and that has all kinds of compatibility with other systems and easily customizable. Only downside is that it is wired only, but it’s a valid alternative if you want to go the same route.
Alternate title: "16 minute video with a sponsorship ad that shows me unplugging something and plugging something else in its place"
The red top plate looks reminiscent of one of the early models for possible Wii controllers.
I knew he’d get the Odin in eventually
Personally I prefer the T-Spin from omni arcade over the odin. It's cheaper, lets me use full sized cherry switches instead of the low profile ones, and it was a fun soldering project (its mostly DIY, part of why its cheaper).
I never skip Wulff Dens ads. There so funny and they make me laugh every time.
being able to, almost plug'n play like, interchange d pads, joysticks, keyboard keys, opens a bunch of possibilities for accessibility, like feet/breath/chin controllers!
Looks like a t10 as in torx. A TR10 has the same shape but a center post in it preventing a regular torx bit from being used. TR standing for tamper resistant. A t10 screw head you can use a torx bit or a tamper resistant bit but a tr10 you can only use a TR bit and not a torx bit.
Doesn’t really matter but just a terminology correction.
I screamed when I saw the thumbnail! MFW I've been trying to get this for months... Wulff Den finally discovering the magic of fightsticks and mixbox controllers.

Great to see the ODIN getting more coverage! I bought one from their very first batch a couple of years ago, and was apparently the first in Europe to get one. Was near perfect from the get go; they are a talented team. I got a bunch of switches from OMNI and love the jade ones in particular. I always have a plan to replace the stick on my 8bitdo arcade stick with a keyboard pad like this odin in your video but never really do it because I've never seen someone really do it, especially because of the 8 pin connector at the pcb.
Now that I have seen this video, I'm convinced.
Thank you, Maxi-, I mean mr. Wulff!!
As an FGC bro and keyboard enthusiast I highly recommend either Samducksa Crown buttons or GamerFinger buttons since they have keyboard switches in them! Super nice feeling, I take crowns over sanwa any day of the week.
While 2.4 GHz usually is faster than Bluetooth, on switch the dock adds a few extra frames I believe making Bluetooth faster on the system.

Id love to do this at some point when i get the money. Looks like itd be a good controller for tetris too.
To help your wrists get a wrist pad that is close to the length of the keyboard.
I would recommend seimitsu buttons if you're looking for more precision. Sanwa, as great as they are, are much more pressure sensitive.
I could hear the scratch of the blues even without being in a keyboard, my God they’re so bad, how is that even possible

Why dont more companies make their circuit boards part of the art. What an amazing PCB!
