    I used some save states in winuae (2-3 each level) to get a "clear run".

    “I was producer on this technology
    showcase. We decided to give the
    sound to future Factor 5 audio and
    video guru Rudolf Stember. He
    used Chris Huelsbeck’s brilliant
    TFMX sound tool but the title
    music for the game still eluded us.
    Then, early in 1990, Chris and I
    had been having nightly jamming
    sessions - Chris on the synth with
    me critiquing the results. Z-Out
    was eventually completed after
    a piece from those sessions fitted
    like a glove. We even had a nerve-
    wrecking switch of graphics artists
    in the middle of the game!”
    -- Julian Eggebrecht (Game designer, director and founder of Factor 5)

    I wonder about some of the commets here. If you had played the games back when they came out, you would knew that X-Out is a couple of years older than Z-Out. X-Out suffered from serious slowdown if played on an A500; the game also froze quite often and you could not play no more - Z-Out on the other hand did not have these issues; the only real issue being the game slightly too difficult. By the way, totally differen programming teams. Apydia used the improved X-Engine. Still slowdrown probs.

    I never played X-Out, but I played Z-Out on my A500 back in the day. Had hours of fun, especially in multiplayer. It was an incredibly hard side-scrolling shooter. Do you remember the cheat? Press J+K simultaneously at the beginning of the first level for invulnerability!

      Like most of the horizontal SHMUPs. In my oppinion there were too many R-Type clones out there that weren't adding anything new to the gameplay, but they were popular on the arcades and consoles, so gamemakers flooded Amiga with them too.

    Entertaining longplay, but saddly the game is pretty mediocre much like 70% of the amiga's library, which I'm really trying hard to like. The amiga is populated by knock-offs that really don't offer much of anything compared to the inspiration( like R-Type in this case). There are a few notable titles that I actually like for example Cannon Fodder, Turrican & Speedball, Hunter, Zeewolf & Virus but other than it's the biggest MEH ever.

    • @andy6576
      @andy6576 Před 9 lety +5

      You really need to expand your horizons and try more stuff. INCREDIBLE that you didn't mention Sensi Soccer/SWOS, for example (basically the best footy game ever). Other superb Amiga games: "Chaos Engine", "Datastorm", "Leander", "D-Generation", "Lemmings II", "Naughty Ones", "Flashback", "Second Samurai", "Populous II", "Ruff 'n' Tumble", "Slam Tilt", "Super Stardust", "Switchblade II", "Settlers", "Putty", "Apidya", "Crazy Cars III", "F1", "Dune II", and loads more.
      There are also some great arcade conversions ("Pac-Mania" and "Rodland" are both BETTER than the arcade originals) and tons of great PD stuff. "Llamatron" by Jeff Minter is incredible. So yeah, the biggest 'meh' ever, huh?

    • @ripoutyourprejudice
      @ripoutyourprejudice Před 9 lety +1

      Jamie Williamson My horizons stretch far and wide friend, trust me. Those were mere examples of some of the games I enjoyed.
      Some of the examples you gave are questionable though. Sensi Soccer is good I will give you that. But Chaos Engine, Leander, Ruff 'n' Tumble, Switchblade 2 and Super Stardust are plain playable average-"ness".
      Dune 2 on the amiga was also inferior to PC original. The Settlers got ported and was better there also, Apidya was incredibly mediocre I don't know why you think that's a game worth mentioning. Really ? Llamatron ?
      Jeff minter is subjectively speaking the most awesome or pathetic individual in the game's industry. Flashback, sorry I'm not a big fan of linear trial and error gameplay, great style, lame game.

    • @andy6576
      @andy6576 Před 9 lety +2

      Hmm...your opinions on what constitutes 'average' are - as far as I'M concerned at least - without merit. Also, are you confusing "Flashback" with its prequel, "Another World"? Because NONE of the adjectives you used apply to "Flashback", but they definitely do to its prequel.
      In fairness, ALL opinions, including mine, are irrelevant. It's like arguing that red is a far superior colour to green. Either way, probably best not to pass off your personal opinions as quantifiable fact. Ah...the internet...

    • @ripoutyourprejudice
      @ripoutyourprejudice Před 9 lety

      Jamie Williamson I'll leave you with your happy ignorant thoughts of grandeur about a platform that was happily left behind.

    • @andy6576
      @andy6576 Před 9 lety +1

      Oh DO please give examples of ANYTHING I said that was grandiose. Either that or buy a dictionary.
      Also, please feel free to keep trying to outwit me, it'll help build your character no end. (Hint: THAT wasn't an example of grandeur either, that was an example of patronising). Hey, I was happy to keep this civil and objective, I really was, but you clearly can't handle anyone disagreeing with you. If you're determined to act like a dick...
