You can tell how hurt and offended by his mistrust of her. In our culture, asking for someone to undergo STD testing is insinuating they’re sleeping around. So to Rose it is exceptionally painful because she is just a young single mom trying to raise her child in a dire situation.
I am from France, married to a Nigerian woman. She suggested we both take a test for HIV before having any kind of intamacy without protection, she wasn't insulting about either of our past as we'd both had partners before meeting or as some trust issue thing, it was discussed respectfully between us over time. It's a completely rational and normal thing to want to discuss fully and respectfully, not just pull on someone out of the blue. We have been married 11 years since then.
I think it is because a difference in culture. I’m a healthcare worker in the US. I am aware STD testing is very normal and responsible thing to do. It’s not a big deal but for a young Filipino mom, who isn’t sleeping around, I understand if she felt offended. Some Filipino women are still very conservative.

@Nikki Mori i think that's one of the other major things I find very insulting tbh. I'm from a third world country as well, and we have some great healthcare services. You can just go to a large private hospital, and the cost won't even be that much comparatively if converted to USD even if you get expensive treatments, let alone a simple STD test. I understand he's out of his comfort zone, but I doubt he even bothered to look up the healthcare in Philippines to find out what his options are and how the system works before making baseless assumptions just because it's a poorer country. And tbh I highly doubt he'd do it in America. A man like him seems to be someone who'd happily keep dodging the question until it never comes up again.

@@anee7558 I agree. here in mexico, an ambulance ride costs you $500 pesos which converts to $25 USD, a visit to the doctor costs around the same, and an STD test ranges from free to $100 pesos/$5 USD. medical procedures are so cheap compared to USA, and they get done professionally and cleanly. i hate it when people think that because it's a third world country, nurses are going to be taking your bloods with a used needle they found in a trashcan or doctor's are going to perform surgery on you on their basement with a butcher's knife.

From the way he said he’d take a test in America, I kind of got three theories from it. 1) He has some kind of disease and wants to wait until Rose is fully trapped before confessing. 2) He wants time to fake the results. 3) He believes everything in her country is on a level far lower than America and he doesn’t trust their medical procedures to not give him some kind of infection or something. To be honest, I’m kind of banking on the third option because that seems to be his general opinion throughout his stay.

Ed should know that poor 3rd World Countries do not always have indoor plumbing and flush toilets. People sleep on the floor. Houses do not always have doors or windows and are open to the street. Crime is prevalent. Starving animals wander through looking for food and many including dogs are killed for food. Life is very hard there. Who would not want a better life than that?
