How Farms Work by Ryan Kuster is a CZcams channel based in rural Potosi, Wisconsin. Our mission is to teach those who didn't grow up on a farm what the farming life is like. These videos show the Kuster family working together raising cattle and crops. We believe everyone who wants to know more about farming should be able to share the farming experience with us and we look to educate the world on many essential agriculture topics.
How Farms Work takes place on ~1,100 acres with around 75-200 cattle at any given time. Four John Deere tractors are currently used on the farm, which are a 4020, 4640, 7600, and 8235R.

The correct time for cutting Alfalfa is well documented, 10% flower is the time you balance yield and quality, post 10% quality falls off before that the yeild of future crops is impaired, just looking at you video I think you were right on the money! thanks for sharing

Flail conditioner's are hard on alfalfa. You almost have to trade off opening up the shield for longer drying time. Great video, I really liked the cutter bar view!

Leaf loss isn’t from being “over ripe” it’s from the whirling blades of death instead of crimpers. Next leaf loss will be the straw maker,,,, or as you call it the tedder 😂
If the hay isn’t as overripe the lower leaves will stay on better due to the increased elasticity in the stalk. Any time you’re handling hay you’ll lose some leaves and a crimper will help but a crimper isn’t as effective at drying the crop.
@@HowFarmsWorkwhen it comes to alfalfa you are dead wrong. When the blooms go to a lighter purple then it’s over ripe. That wasn’t. And you’re also dead wrong on crimpers. When you cut 6 times a year like we do down here you learn what works and what doesn’t. Especially when there no humidity to bale on. Those leaves are where the protein is and so you want to keep them.

There will be a new addition coming to the farm! It's not as big as a tractor but for me its as useful as a grain cart!
Hey Ryan, Yes Sir when years are slow with rain every little bit helps. We never feed Alfalfa hay to our horses we always feed Coastal bermudagrass to them. That and Oat hay. Can you put taller shoes on your machine to prevent digging in the dirt ?
With the conditioner in the mower it’s hard to believe any leaves would be left on the alfalfa,
This mower has a two-speed conditioner that does a great job at preserving the leaves when the alfalfa isn’t so far into flower.

Awesome video but slow mo shows why flail mowers are not always great. Surprised they haven’t developed a sectional mower where they can be swapped from flail-crimper-not conditioned.
First, Thank you for your great Videos! 2nd, i was told to leave 2 or 3 inches of alphalpha to help it recover? 3rd, how often do you have to replant it? The field next to me is 4 years old now getting 3 cuttings a year. I thought you had to replant at 3 years??? Luv ya's from Kentucky!!!!
Recommended height left to stand is 2-3" to help the plant. We will tear it up when yield starts to dwindle after ~6 years and rotate it into corn and beans for a few years.

I thought ideal nutritional value was to take alfalfa at first sign of bloom?
It is, however since first cut's yield was poor I wanted to leave it as long as I could to increase yield.
How did that grass get so overgrown, do the cows not get on that pasture?
There aren't any cows on that pasture anymore, I would like to get them back out there but it needs all new fences.
How much do you lose from the first pass because of the tractor tires knocking plants down?
We go the opposite direction on the next pass. If we’re extended all the way out it gets all of the plants that were knocked down. I’ll drive closer to the edge though so I can see what the mower is up against
@@HowFarmsWorkwould it be beneficial to go clockwise around the field for a couple rounds with the mower swung out, and do the outside round by going counter- clockwise, allowing the mower to stand up and cleanly cut the grass laid down from the tractor tires?

Oh boy very much loss in the alfalfa. I pobably didn´t understand everything you said at the beginning beacause I am not a native English speaker but I think you schould not use a conditioner when you mow the alfalfa. And yea the grass was overgrown by far. It´s not just blooming but already spreading the seeds. 🙄
Why did you choose the GMD 4061 TCD mower with a steel finger conditioner instead of the TCS (Steel Roller Conditioner) or the TCR (Rubber Roller Conditioner) ??
In my opinion, a rubber roller conditioner works better in legumes, like alfalfa. The steel finger conditioners has its advantages in normal grass.
And did you buy this mower or is it still a demonstration model?
Rubber rollers work well on alfalfa but when we tried it on grass it didn't crimp the stalk as well which led to the crop not drying as effectively. Altogether we run more grass than alfalfa right now and the fact this mower has a slower speed for alfalfa makes it work much better versatility wise.

Krone has the nice M-Rolls, which work perfect on grass and legumes. Kuhn also offers a steel roller.
