AM2R: The Fandom's Defiance | GEEK CRITIQUE

  • On Metroid's 30th anniversary, Nintendo left it up to the fans to commemorate the occasion. And when that fandom produced something the Big N wouldn't, the company responded... poorly.
    HUGE thanks to Milton Guasti himself for being so willing to answer my questions. If you'd like to see our full exchange, here it is, but you should DEFINITELY watch the video first as the text spoils a lot: pastebin.com/qAaMVFA0
    Almost all of the music in this video is from the Metroid tracks from Smash Bros, the Metroid series, or AM2R itself. The "Sweet Dreams" remix at the beginning is from this INCREDIBLE Sonic fan short. It seemed appropriate: • Sweet Dream - Short Film

    You certainly earned your 25000 subscribers with quality contents, not just this video. For that, congratulations.
    I really appreciate the honesty and hard work put into this video. It's disheartening not being able to update the game anymore, but it's awesome to see people enjoying it.
    Hearing these kind words from Metroid fans makes me forget about the Nintendo situation. After all, fans are the intended audience, and their approval makes all of our sacrifice worth it.
    Thank you for taking the time to play, enjoy and share your thoughts about AM2R.

      Steven Gates Nintendo should make a remake in my opinion. Not because it’s a bad game, or anything like that, but to let a new audience find it and access it more easier. Should also add a tutorial and an option to turn it off. They shouldn’t change the graphics much, and explain stuff easier, and maybe add a new game + or something.
      Edit: also fix the wall jump and space jump because it’ll take time to get used to it, and also probably add in the power grip or something.

    There's something I just noticed about the tester boss in the tower. The tower in the original Metroid 2 had a room where it held every beam in the game, letting you choose what beam you wanted to progress with, but that room isnt in AM2R. Instead it was replaced intelligently with this biss, and this boss directly references the original beams by its 4 different beam attack patterns representing the ice, plasma, wave and spazer beams. Very well done replacement and reference to the original game since the beam upgrades function very differently in this game.

  • @KelvinShadewing
    @KelvinShadewing Před 6 lety +288

    That first escape sequence with the overloaded core was pretty fun for me. The thing about the door losing power as you enter the room and the only way out being to blast your way out just filled me with such an overwhelming sense of dread. It was like being in a Saw movie, where the only way out is to do something dangerous, painful, and otherwise very stupid, but you gotta do it or else you're trapped forever. The only way out is something that may well kill you anyway, and I experienced a similar sensation in Metroid Fusion when I knew the SA-X was ahead of me, but it was also in the way of my only route to the next area, and I knew it would chase me, and I knew if it got me, I was done for. That's why I love that moment. That sense of dreadful tension knowing I stepped in something bad, and I'm not gonna like my only way out.

      @Egalitariat-likesecretariat Před 3 lety +7

      Personally, I think it would be better to more clearly show the player what's going on - if the room, for instance, lost the ambient noise after the door closed, and had the lights dim or go completely off, that would communicate that there really aren't any more convenient options to get out. Have the door lose its glow, blah blah blah. Have a codex entry update spell it out, if you need that too.
      My point is, communicating that Samus has no clear way out helps put you in her shoes, and might make the moment feel more desperate and claustrophobic ... Until the countdown starts.

    15:00 So, I've been playing a lot of AM2R since Samus Returns came out and I noticed something as you reach the end of the game. I'm not sure if this is in either the 1.0 or 1.1 version of the game, but after defeating the final Omega Metroid, during the quake that lowers the acid, you can faintly hear an angry, high-pitched roar in the distance. I can't say for certain, but I think this is meant to imply that the tremors that continually lower the acid are somehow caused by the Queen Metroid's rage as you slaughter her children. How that would be possible I can't say, but it brings up a note that your favorite comment mentions: in the Game Boy version of Metroid II, the Chozo statue in the Breeding Facility is smashed and destroyed, hinting at a greater intellect at work. If the Queen has high intellect, perhaps she has deep emotions as well? The idea of Samus committing genocide is a lot more terrifying when you realize (at least one of) those creatures is self-aware.

    • @AustinOnSugar
      @AustinOnSugar Před 6 lety +116

      I think that was always the implication; that killing a flock (school? gaggle? cornucopia?) of metroid causes the mother to thrash about, and being so large and practically embedded in the walls of the planet depths, she causes the acid to rise and fall. You can actually hear her roars as early as the Distribution Center, as I recall, though far more faintly. A lot of fans would claim this was the intent in the original game as well, though AM2R certainly makes that fact more.... visceral.

    "Sega does what Nintendon't." Sega has always attempted to set themselves apart from the competition.
    1. Nintendo tried to block any game enhancing devices (i.e., Game Genie, Action Replay, Game Shark) from its consoles through legal action while Sega embraced them. Nintendo fought back by redesigning their consoles. I can't help but think this legal win for the gamer may have saved the SNES.
    2. Nintendo tried to block the rental of its games at rental stores, yet Sega embraced that, too. This included a test where Sega would give re-programmable Genesis/Mega Drive cartridges to rental stores so they could download a copy of a game so they wouldn't quickly run out of their 5 copies of the newest AAA title. However, this never went beyond the test market.
    3. Nintendo removed all blood and fatalities from the SNES version of "Mortal Kombat" while Sega allowed the inclusion of blood through a code. "Mortal Kombat" sells better on the Genesis/Mega Drive. Nintendo has a change of heart, and produces the better version of "Mortal Kombat II."

    To whomever it may concern, as of July 30th, 2019, AM2R has been updated and improved between it's release and now, and has even been made into an Android mobile port that you can download, and it's all thanks to the fans of both Metroid and this remake. As of now, the game has had a few tweaks to the Metroid fights, and includes the following content as of now: Fusion mode- a new difficultly mode (which works similarly to Samus Return's version), New Game + (which lowers the lava of the game dramatically to allow for more exploration at the start), and Random Game + (which is about what you'd expect). If you haven't tried this game out yet, now is the best time

    • @killeraven
      @killeraven Před 7 lety +6

      Well Is kinda difficult that Nintendo hire them, and not because is STUPID not to hire them but making games for consoles is not the same as making games for PC. Only PRO's make console for games, and by pro's I mean, people with a REALLY REALLY REALLY technical background in computer science. WHY? Consoles, are less powered than PC's and the people that make the game have to manage the resources they have in the best way. There's commercial game engines out there to help indies, but Nintendo is not the kind of company that relies on game engines made by other people, and is easy to understand that because most of their games run at 60 fps in a shitty hardware.
      Of course there's other indie games that are on 3DS and Wii U made with Game Maker and Unity. But those are CUSTOM BUILDS made by the companies that made the engines, and to request that they need MONEY, so that's why those games appear first on PC, and then on CONSOLES.
      Christian Whitehead did not made PORTS of the SONIC GAMES, he actually coded them all and using reverse engineering ended up with a GAME so exact that looks like a port. He used his own engine made in 3 years called RETRO ENGINE and using reverse engineering of the SONIC roms, he took the sprites, and analized the variables of the games such as SPEED and PHYSICS to use on his engine writeen on C++. I remember reading something about it back in 2009, and luckily I found his interview, so if you want to check it out.
      toucharcade.com/2009/07/29/christian-whitehead-on-sonic-cd-and-his-retro-engine/
      Nintendo is very picky with indie developers, SONY takes 2nd and the least one is Microsoft (Of course they encouraged and practically started the INDIE WAVE along with VALVE and NEWGROUNDS back in 2006)

      That self-destruction sequence was the best part of the game for me. I had assumed I'd be able to get away from it once I reached the elevator (for whatever reason I assumed that lol) so I took my time going back because I thought I'd be just fine.
      Then I reached the elevator and as it was going up I realized... "Wait... IT'S NOT STOPPING?!!" That made me go so damn fast through the rest of the sequence I thought I had totally f*cked up. The temperature was almost full, I was reaching the last room and thought "Ok good I'm gonna make it." to enter the last room and to see those two gates sloooooowly opening and tear my heart apart. I really thought I had f*cked up that sequence and was gonna die.
      Then the explosion and to my surprise Samus was laying on the ground with 5 hp left. It hit me that it was a scripted sequence. The way it happened to me was just so soooo good. Those 5 hp left getting you by surprise is an absolute joy of a moment. Seriously, if you ever watch a friend play this game trick them into thinking the explosion stops at the elevator or something. Make them desperate to get away because it makes the experience so much better.

    Upon revisiting this video, it strikes me that something should be pointed out about the difference between Taxman and Milton: Taxman put together his version of Sonic CD and then *showed it* to SEGA, offering to make the game for them. He essentially applied for a job in a very unorthodox way. Milton, while he did fantastic work and is a wonderful person, did not approach Nintendo with AM2R (at least, not that has ever been said about it).
    I can't say if Nintendo would have done the same thing as SEGA given the circumstances, but the point is that Taxman applied for a job, Milton made a full game of someone's IP behind their back and released it to a titanic audience. What the other minor differences are, legal or otherwise, is up to other people to talk about.

    It's hilarious how Nintendo could have espoused AM2R as a monumental marketing opportunity and pay tribute to all Metroid fans in capitalizing on the wealth this game would have brought them had they sold it digitally via partnership with Milton and his cohorts. But alas, NO, it didn't happen, but then we were all bestowed the revelation that a remake, Samus Returns, was in full development by Mercury Steam for the 3DS, which is a commendable remake, don't get me wrong, but Nintendo's wrath to quash AM2R stands as a testament and ultimately a blemish to Nintendo's continued demeanor in being a less than fan-friendly company, even though they market themselves as under the paradigm of being "family friendly". But, Nintendo could still make amends and allow for AM2R to come digitally to their Switch game store, so hopefully the new NOA, Doug Bowser, is paying attention to marketing potential of such a prospect.

    As a lifelong Nintendo fan, 2015 and 2016 were the low points for me. It felt like the company had lost its way. Many of Nintendo's titles during the Wii U years were either pedestrian and lacking ambition, or just plain bad and flawed in their design (I'm looking at you Star Fox Zero and Paper Mario: Color Splash). It was during this climate that AM2R released, a fantastic game in its design and reverence to the series. Nintendo's last two Metroids had been horrific, and this was everything most of the fans wanted. Fast forward to December 2018, I'm glad Nintendo is back on its feet. They've released some fantastic titles in the last couple years, announced 2 new Metroid games, and their own Metroid 2 Remake was pretty good. Anyway, thank you for the excellent breakdown and critique. I just wanted to emphasize the climate in which AM2R was released, not just for the Metroid franchise, but the company in general and the fanbase.

    With the recent news of Metroid: Samus Returns, the DMCA makes sense. Here's the main thing, since they were making their own remake of Metroid 2, we now know that AM2R would have been DIRECT competition for Nintendo with their own IP. Why buy Nintendo's official one when there's a fantastic fan remake out? Luckily it seems S:SR and AM2R will play off each other nicely. The fan game is an evolution of the GBA game style brought to Metroid II. The official is Metroid II brought up to a modern idea of what it would be on 3DS, complete with modern touches like free aiming. I was irked that Nintendo shut the project down, but seeing this e3 and that announcement makes it fully understood why. I really hope Samus Returns does well, if it does, more official 2d style Metroid games could be in the future.

    • @KingAmazon
      @KingAmazon Před 7 lety +46

      AM2R would have (and will have, as it is still around despite Nintendo's questionable efforts to suppress it) had zero effect on Nintendo's official release's sales. If anything, as Geek Critique himself mentioned, AM2R just enhanced the Metroid fanbase and created more potential customers for Nintendo's official release. Instead of embracing and applauding the efforts of the fan community and the response of the fan base to AM2R, Nintendo shit all over themselves in fear because they can't make anything close to the quality of AM2R and made themselves look terrible in the process. Samus Returns is not a "2D style" Metroid game in my book, it looks nothing like the games that fans have known and loved over the years.

    • @revenile
      @revenile Před 7 lety +32

      You move left and right and jump around, sure sounds like a 2d style Metroid to me. Sure the trailer showed other angles, but the graphics are 3d, not the gameplay. Nintendo also can't let a dev team work for a DECADE on a game to make something as polished as AM2R, one has to take the circumstances of each game into consideration, both games don't exist in a vacuum here. I also seriously doubt they shut it down in fear, I call bull on that. AM2R was out in the open for at least 7 years (I followed it for that long), and not only have there been multiple demos that were left alone, but the game was covered MANY times by gaming sites, it was no secret and it was impossible that Nintendo didn't know about it for a while. But to each his own. The gameplay I've seen of Samus Returns looks great, the people who played it at e3 had positive reactions from what I've read and watched, so I think it will be just fine. Even DoctorM64, the GUY WHO MADE AM2R is excited for it. AM2R is still around, I have it and love it myself, and I hope Samus returns does well, after the flops of Other M and Federation Force, it (and Prime 4), I don't know if the Metroid series can survive another flop. Of course that's not saying buy the game if it's bad, but I have seen nothing that indicates it will be.

      @KingAmazon Před 7 lety +10

      Time will tell. AM2R was better than all of the existing Metroid games other than MAYBE Super Metroid, and the Nintendo that made those games has long since passed. Their last two Metroid games have been garbage. The developer of Samus Returns is MercurySteam, the same company that made the pretty mediocre Castlevania Lords of Shadow series that was criticized for being very different from the classic Castlevania games. Samus Returns may technically be a "2D" Metroid game, but it doesn't look anything like the existing 2D series when it features things like the gimmicky melee attacks/counters and 360 degree free aiming. I may be wrong and Samus Returns may be better than AM2R, but I highly doubt it at this point. The way that you assume that it will be just shows that you are a blind fanboy. I think it is you who is salty, because Nintendo is afraid to allow something like AM2R to exist because they know they can't live up to the standard it set. Unfortunately for them, AM2R is still alive and well, and is still receiving updates by fans even if it isn't being updated by the original developer.

If they don't defend it at that point they essentially sacrifice their franchise name. They had a game in the works, and likely didn't know about this game until close to if not after release. But really, Nintendo DID let it release at the very least, knowing it wasn't going anywhere, wanna know why? Just 3 weeks ago I was able to download the game on and specifically made FOR my Android phone. You go created a massive game franchise and let someone else make a popular free game out of it so you lose your franchise if you think shit like that is cool, and tell me it's still ok.

      Philip Parsons That's something I hated in AM2R. How optional and missable a lot of stuff are, like the Varia Suit, and how much missing them impacts in the gameplay.

    • @hyperx72
      @hyperx72 Před 7 lety +5

      Those are the kinds of upgrades that really expresses metroid's exploratory aspects. You're never forced to be handed an upgrade, you can get through the game without finding half the stuff in it, and the fact that it works without those upgrades and the fact that you can find them on new runs is just fantastic. I can easily recall the time I found the Wave Beam or an energy tank out of sheer, lucky back-tracking and how satisfying it was to be rewarded for my natural curiosity.

    • @Maldito011316
      @Maldito011316 Před 7 lety

      @hyperx72 Now those are a close but unfair comparison. Super Metroid had a ton of energy tanks, so missing one was fine. Playing without some CORE upgrades just makes the game a worst experience, like playing without the Spazer or Wave Beam. Have in mind that they were not quite missable in Super Metroid as upgrades were in AM2R.

      I had a similar experience with the spring ball. Eventually I found out I had missed it and I decided to do one last thing before going there, which was the speed booster challenge in the golden temple...which is the only place in the game that requires the spring ball, because you need it to shinespark down the morph ball tunnel. Then, I played the randomizer, and the spring ball required the gravity suit to access, and when I finally found the gravity suit I was already ready to end the game.

    for the record... federation force isnt a BAD game.
    but why we all hate it is due to it being the only metroid game in 6 years
    and the ONLY acknowlegement of metroids *30* goddamn years.
    thats where the insult is. were starved for a game like prime, or a game like zero mission.....
    heartbreaking to know nintendo wont listen to fans her.
    i will always love nintendo. but.... in recent years they have made mistakes.
    keep in mind... when you love something... you HAVE to be willing to admit when they are wrong.
    and in nintendos case, they were VERY wrong to piss on the metroid fanbase like this. i expected KONAMI to do something like this. not nintendo.

      Honestly, I've actually thought that exploring the Metroid universe as Federation troopers would be cool since they were showcased so heavily in Prime 2. Federation Force could have been a cool spinoff had they actually taken it seriously; I'm generally not one to put much thought towards a game's graphics if it plays well, but I sincerely believe that the art style ruined FF.

      Federation Force wasn't originally supposed to be a Metroid game. The developer just wanted to make a fun little co-op shooter. It wasn't really supposed to be anything special. Nintendo forced them to add the Metroid elements to a game where they blatantly didn't fit. It failed and cost Nintendo a lot of money, and for that I'm glad. I do feel sorry for the actual developer though, who didn't want to do any of that.
