- Michael Mann's Miami Vice (Collin Farrell / Jaimie Foxx) is a film adaptation made from the popular 80s tv series following two cops as they journey into the gritty underbelly of Miami Florida's criminal underworld. The movie features top notch performances, wonderfully nostalgic needle drops, a very vibe-heavy musical score and not to mention an artistic visual language that allows you to see much more than you hear in this dark crime drama. The question today is- how does it hold up? Let's find out today!

The boat scene where they go to Cuba is just incredible
I’m glad this movie is finally getting the credit and recognition it deserves. Absolute gem of a film.
Miami Vice was a network television series, not cable. That said, I felt like Mann did a killer job bringing it to the big screen. I think it was a great move that he went modern instead of period piecing it.
This movie is a Michael Mann masterpiece. Seen it at least 15x.
We love it too!
This and Collateral are a great double bill for movie night.
Wrong... that honour belongs to HEAT
@@coinopanimator Collateral maybe the Mann movie i've Seen even more.
@@JestersDeadUK I would put Heat in a Double bill with Manhunter.
One of the last, and one of the best from the era before mega-budget-films became fast food. Masterpiece.
Movie sucked. What are you talking about?
Underrated in the extreme. Love the atmosphere and vibe it gives off. It will be appreciated in time.
You all got me now. Never watched it, but now i´ll give it a chance.
Michael Mann does the best shoot out scenes. You know where everyone is, you know why they're in that position, you know exactly whats going on at every moment.
Agreed the only shooting out that was better was Heat.
The movie did get us a good cover of "In the Air Tonight"
Probably one of the best covers in my opinion, plus they had audioslave in the soundtrack
Nonpoint actually did it in 2004 for their album Recoil. It was only used in the end credits and the Unrated directors cut.
Such a great movie, great atmosphere and great sound track.
The shoot outs and action sequences in this film are some of my favorites in cinema. The cinematography was beautiful.
Absolute Classic. Love the cinematography of this and Collateral.
I think that you hit the nail on the head - the chemistry between Collin Farrell and Jaimie Foxx was flat and there we traces of hostility between them that leaked through from time to time. I think that this had the bones to be a great movie, but it still a good watch and is better to me with every re-watch.
Foxx is such an arse
Such a good Movie.. a true Classic.. Stands on its own indeed.
Michael Man Is the Mann. 👍😎👌😎👊😎✊🍁
I love this movie. The PSP version of the game was amazing. If you had a friend with the same game you could play co-op as Crockett and Tubbs. It was fun as hell.
I bought a PSP back in the day just to play Miami Vice. It was a sleeper title! Wish it would've made the transition to the PS2 like other PSP games did.
The Director's Cut is a masterpiece. Bluray
The intro to Miami Vice the TV show always reminds me of the 80s and for me still one of the best shows of its time. The film was very good and not a rip off of the show and is a stand alone film
Totally. I brush my teeth to that theme song every summer during re-run season 😂
@@JoBloOriginals Bonkers
This film holds a special place in my memory. My best friend and I had gone to see Pulse. After being utterly letdown by that poor excuse for a horror movie, I offered the idea to hop over to the screen next to Pulse cause we didn’t feel we got our money’s worth and the other movie was about to start. We ended up in the late showing of Miami Vice with maybe 3 or 4 other people. Needless to say Miami Vice was incredible compared to the lameness we had just sat through. My only regret from that night was that my ticket money went to the wrong film. I did buy the movie when it came out to make up for it.
Hated this movie when I saw it in theaters because I had "expectations".
Second time I watch it, it became one of my favorite films of all time.
Dude, same. I remember leaving the theater thinking it was boring. But I wasn’t paying close enough attention. Once I saw it at home, I fell in love with it.
The film was decent in IMAX but if you were in FL 2005 2006 era, it does not hold up in spots.
One of my favorites
I saw this in the theater and loved it from day one. I recommend that steel book... if you can find it.
A much underrated effort
BIG Vice fan..this was a much grittier look into that show..loved that.
I’m glad to see this film finally get the love it deserves. I will admit I think it would have done better in the theaters had they released the Director’s Cut. One of my all time favorites.
I like this movie a lot, ... I've watched it dozens of times. I think it's one of Michael Mann's masterpieces. And regarding comparison to the TV series which I watched as a kid, this "Miami Vice" flick stands rightfully by itself (meaning I really don't care about the TV series when watching this film). Colin Farrell's performance I found to be excellent as well as most of the cast. John Ortiz is great and so is Gong Li, and I'm glad I was introduced to Luis Tosar (great actor also in many of his other films) in this film.
The locations and scenery for each shot, the style (from clothing to cars, real estate--homes to powerboats), the mood in each scene, as well the attention to detail (like the choice of airplanes and weapons ... it helps to hear Michael Mann's commentary on the DVD/Blu-Ray... it's really good and insightful) are all top quality.
And then there's a truly excellent soundtrack with the contemporary version of "In the Air tonight" by Nonpoint and Manzanita's "Arranca" (with an engaging dance scene between Farrell and Li set in "Havana" in the film) and "New World in my view" (King Britt's remake of Sister Gertrude Morgan's classic), and "Pennies in my pocket" (Emilio Estefan), to India.Arie's "Ready for Love" ... just one song after another contribute to the mood. BTW, the lighting is just top-notch.
The film is good with a good ending and what looks like a bit of "glorification" of crime during the movie, then in the end it shows the dark side of crime with death and that crime just doesn't pay. Dialogue is okay, nothing too intellectual of course, but more surface stuff, but like most viewers I think we enjoy mostly the style, the mood/ambience, the overall thrill, etc. as Michael Mann has the gift to draw us into the location for each shot as if we were right there watching it all right in front of our eyes.
Really liked this movie but I’m just a huge Michael Mann fan ..plus it’s the last movie I watched with my father before he passed. He was also a Mann fan …way better than the ratings it received and the colors and layered cinematography were incredible
A great movie version of the show! It was done right and Mann hit it outta the park!
Glad this film is finally getting some love
I listen to this soundtrack every day
Gong Li is so incredibly beautiful, and she is 10+ years older than Colin Farrell--time is luck I tell ya
I thought this movie was awesome. I was totally immersed in the world. Gritty and visceral.
It was ok but flawed. I lived in central FL and saw a few casting parts for it. A woman I knew in Boca Raton FL considered auditioning for the woman/meth head in the trailer scene.
I loved it.
I do agree about Farrell and Foxx’s lack of chemistry. It’s partly due to Foxx’s ego trip and Farrell being so coked out of his head, he did say later in life that he barely has any recollection filming the movie.
They should re do this. Jamie had his near death and is humbled Colin sober now Mann is never making Heat 2 and in his early 80’s they should all come together and try to make this again.
As someone who was in their 20’s when Miami Vice came out (and loved seasons 1 & 2 I think they lost their way after) and 40’s when the movie came out, I liked the both because, to me, they stand on their own. You could not recreate the vibe of the 80’s. You really had to be there.
Anyway, when I saw the ending of the movie, it reminded me of the probably the greatest episode of MV “Evan” (did a great job of handling homophobia and what was going on with AIDS in 1985).
Mann loves himself some Audioslave. Love it in Collateral.
Being a huge fan of the show, I love this film. It's good to have two different flavors of that franchise. I'd say, Miami Vice is my second favorite 2000s Michael Mann film after Collateral
It’s not my favorite. And probably Mann’s worst. But it definitely has a charm about it. Has all the good Michael Mann staples: nice visuals, good soundtrack, cool characters.
Miami Vice is a great. It has a tight story, characters and directing. Severely underated. I think people were thinking it was going to be exactly like the show. I've seen it half a dozen times and enjoy it every time.
The opening scene is one of film’s best.
Underrated film. Being a Miami native, MV really captures the feel of the city and the “style over substance” nature of Miami. And the new Tokyo Vice series in HBO max is fantastic too.
Just like Holloween 3, you call this movie something else and it wouldve been appreciated more
Truuuuue
I think if the series didn't exist this would be praised more. But like everything else it gets compared to the og.
NBC was/is a broadcast station
I was not a fan of the film when I first saw it in theaters, but it has since grown on me quite a bit and holds up very well. Mann's choice to make it more neo noir type thriller was an interesting one. Part of me thought it should have had more neon like the show did but it still works just fine the way it is.
Miami Vice hit network TV, not cable.
This movie is a masterpiece. It has layers and maybe you don't understand the story on first watch. I like to rewatch this movie. So many messages and feelings there. The loss of your loved one, the cost of the war on drugs and drug abuse in the world, the integrity of law enforcement and how much one willing to sacrifice for his job or his loved one.
So many people missing the point and handle this as an action movie. This is an atmospheric trip. (Like Spring Breakers)
Do yourself a favor and watch it!
"I'm a fiend for mojitos" was when I knew the film was a bummer
Miami Vice wasn’t a cable show. It was in network television. I don’t mean to be a shit but you starting off jacked up.
Yeah and it was a rare kind of network show, that we really hadn't seen before.
Let's hope we get Heat 2. I really like the novel.
I really liked it when it came out so am glad it has now developed a much better reputation. I do agree about the lack of any chemistry between Farrell and Foxx tho.
Love this movie
I love this movie. I'm that guy that loves movies that most people loathe. I don't love them bc others hate them, I'm just apparently broken.
nice audio wiki article
A24 wouldn’t exist without this movie
I’ve come to really like it. With age and more viewings. I like more than when I first saw it . But yes I agree your take for the most part. But I do feel to some degree the lack chemistry does hamstring the movie some . A big part of the original was was the chemistry with its two leads . If you just enjoy the movie for what it is and not just a Miami Vice movie . There’s a lot there to watch and enjoy.
Vice 🔥🔥🔥
I've never seen it. I've been a Mann fan ever since I watched Manhunter as a 10 year old.
The only thing missing was Crockett's theme in the soundtrack.
"hit cable" haha no it aired on NBC Friday Nights. Huge part of my childhood and we didn't get cable until I was 12 in 86 :D
Seems odd that MIAMI Vice was at one point intended to have the finale set in Paraguay.
I think it was 🇵🇦 but .....
Love love this movie. What is the original ending that Foxx walked out on??
I remember thoroughly disliking this when I watched it after its home video release. Though it did stick with me. Over the years, I've come to associate it with the era and HDDVD/Bluray format war, as the marketing was everywhere, and so many DVDs of the time had ads for it. I remember seeing so many copies and displays in Best buy and smaller family run stores. Maybe it was the nostalgia factor, but I gave it a rewatch last year and my opinion changed. Even if I necessarily don't like the plot or characters, its just got a feel to it that's hard to put to words.
Absolutely loved this movie but I had to go back and watch a second time before I truly appreciated it. That being said I’ve probably watched it a dozen times since and it gets better each time. Ferrell was perfect casting and Foxx was good too
Not the best Michael Mann but I enjoyed it
I saw the movie many years ago, around 2010. From what I remember it came with spectacular cinematography, but as I recall it was not very thrilling to watch.
For those who remember or seen the TV show the movie is a mixture of a couple different episodes from the first season with elements of the 2000’s. I enjoyed the movie would’ve loved to seen a 2nd movie but the public was not ready for that kind of movie. The unrated director cut was better than the theatrical version.
I love this movie. I wont hear a bad thing about it
I guess my favorite part of this movie is that Mann is very confused by the retroactive praise for it.
Director's Cut is better TBH
The opening boat race is gorgeous.
I love the theatrical cut's "In medias res" opening. Really sets the tone and wastes no time.
I’ve only ever seen the Director’s Cut since I only have the DVD. So, only watched that cut. I liked it a lot. I might want to upgrade to the Blu-ray
Still waiting for the 4k UHD release
great job reciting the wiki article
It is one of the better film adaptations of a TV show, others such as Baywatch, The A-Team, Get Smart, and The Dukes Of Hazzard didn't do so well.
You read that wikipedia page pretty well XD
BTW. EUROTRIP needs a review!!!!
They should have released the DVD with a bonus copy of the 1st 5 episodes of the 80's TV show & a video catalog to order the TV show seasons or box set for people like me that have never watched the show.
They really should do that for all the remade movies of old TV shows, like what's a disc cost them verses advertisement costs, and this way it's direct marketing not wasting money on useless eyeballs.
Why does it feels like we’re fifteen blocks out?
I love the TV series. Was too young to watch it live, but loved rewatching it later on. Everything from the show is better than the movie.
I was excited for the movie. But it was simply not a good movie, even if you remove the specter of the TV show from the room.
Glad some people like though.
I'll have to retry this. My friends and I couldn't finish this when it released. My god it was boring.
Love the film
RJW JC
But the series is the business
👍👍👍🎥
I was young I couldn’t give the movie a chance bc of its low budget feel with no charm to it but I was so used to the brainless Michael Bay type action at that time. I’m older now and can’t stand films like that 😅 so I definitely have to go back and watch this
the pacing is way GD off in this movie, but I liked it.
Narrated by Mordecai apparently 🤌🏾🐦
I'll have to give it a rewatch b/c I didn't like it at the time. It was a lot noise and steely looks and that was about it (b/c I don't remember a thing about the story but I still remember the TV pilot episode). I do agree that Farrell and Fox had no chemistry and their line readings at times are dry. I have the same feeling when it comes to this film and Blackhat that neither have any soul. We are supposed to care but the story is so thinly drawn that we don't. Miami Vice does feel like a missed opportunity for a great action flick.
Great movie but the critics hated it.
Love the vibe of the film 100%, I don't particularly care for Colin Ferrel in 'this' movie. I think the issue is the criminals had passion but the cops came off as cold and uninteresting.
The ppl who didn't like this movie seem to be boomers who grew up watching the original show.
This movie fucks hard
Some people might get pissed off at me for saying this, but whatever...
I think the Miami Vice movie is a good Michael Mann film but not a good adaptation to the show. It has a good story and is well shot and edited, but it just kind of lacks the charm the original show had.
It is a better film than the Dukes of Hazzard movie, I'll give it that.
This was a phenomenal movie. Highly underrated.
The time to make a Miami Vice movie was 30 years ago where you could have used Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas and made a 2-hour Miami Vice episode that could take advantage of all the blood and violence and sex and swearing that a TV show was sorely missing. This movie could have been named anything but Miami Vice and it would have still stood by itself. This was not Miami Vice.
Look, if you like this film, I'm happy for you. But for me, this film was ugh. But that 430 was chefs kiss
If they make a Miami Vice revival, I’d love to be apart of it. I wouldn’t mind playing a new character that teams up with Crockett and Tubbs or Switek and even Castillo, Gina and Trudy. An up and coming Vice cop name Johnson that works at Miami Vice old OCB building.
Jamie Foxx, you got some esplaining to do...
If you've never seen it before, Theatrical >>> Director's Cut.
Could have become a franchise, missed opportunity.
Gong Li doesn’t speak English and had to sound out her lines
This is one of my favorite movies of 2006. My only gripe, the ugly cinematography. I'm not a fan of the early days of digital cameras, the film looks like it was shot with cheap consumer camcorder.
This movie took story elements from original episodes and did not do them justice. My recommendation, watch the original pilot episode and be done with it.
it didn't have anything that we liked in the tv show and Mike mann is known for excellent sound in his movies. not with this one
It's a great film for fans of the original series, but as a stand alone film is quite empty. You never get to know this characters, who they are, their motivations, who is the team, anything.
Very true
I kind of appreciate that, in a weird way. It’s interesting that the viewer just “drops in” on what’s happening. No exposition, no character intros… just straight into Crockett and Tubbs world.
Not a great recreation of classic Vice or modern day reimagination, but still an interesting movie nonetheless.
