MIAMI VICE (2006) - THE BEST MOVIE YOU NEVER SAW

  • Welcome back to another edition of The Best Movie You Never Saw. This week, we are taking a look at a more recent film, 2006’s MIAMI VICE. For those of you who know anything about me, you know my love for Michael Mann’s classic 1980s television series runs deep. The saga of Crockett and Tubbs is an instantly recognizable archive of a decade of excess, fluorescent clothing, rolled up sport coats, and amazing hair. Running for five seasons on NBC, MIAMI VICE drew heavily on New Wave culture and has remained a syndication stalwart for thirty years. Having influenced everything from video games like Grand Theft Auto: Vice City to the storytelling format of police procedurals like Law & Order, Miami Vice returned to the mainstream in the early 2000s with series creator Michael Mann behind the camera. Only, this big screen MIAMI VICE is virtually nothing like the television series it was based on - or so it would seem.
Since the lackluster box office of $63.5 million domestically (plus another $100 million internationally) and divisive critical reception, Miami Vice faded pretty quickly but the stories of the troublesome production have abounded. But how is the film itself, fifteen years after the fact? Join us as we examine this much maligned but awesome Michael Mann, Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx classic.

Easily one of my favourite films ever. I am consistently so bitter that it doesn't get more recognition/praise for the unbelievable mood piece that it is. Farrell and Fox actually work so well together it is joyous, I also fully believe this to be one of Farrell's best showings.

Same. People that complain about "plot holes" or "inconsistencies" are probably the type that want everything laid out and explained to them. If you pay attention, you can follow the film flawlessly. I saw this film for the first time when it came out (I was 10 at the time) and it has become one of my favorite "vibe movies" of all time. Hopefully once its 20th anniversary comes around, people will finally look back on it and realize what an underappreciated gem it truly is.

In my 20s I revisited the series and fell in love all over again. People forget how dark the TV show was. With that said, The movie was just as good. You nailed it when you mentioned "thinking persons action movie". It really is. You have to follow the plot quite closely otherwise you’ll get confused very quickly. I know I did when I first saw it in the theatre. It’s a beautiful looking film, well acted, good cast, good music (should’ve been some Jan Hammer in there though) but it just needed maybe a little more humor and some tweaking of the story as the pace tends to slow down towards the end. A shame it didn’t do well as I reckon a sequel may have been on the cards (probably with a different director maybe). On the plus side, thank heavens we had this version rather than a Starsky and Hutch style reboot that was made!

Way to go, Jo! I've been waiting for a review like this since "Vice" came out almost 16 years ago. I'm a huge admirer of Mann, and there's no doubt he's an over-the-top prick perfectionist on the set, but you can't argue with what you get. Sure, "Manhunter" and "Last of the Mohicans" and "The Insider" are fun--and important---fllms, but "Heat" and "Miami Vice" are the jewels in His Lordship's crown. Again, thank you Jo.

Fantastic movie and really under appreciated. Reminds me of Drive in that it was advertised as a straight up action movie when in reality it was more of a slow-burn. Michael Mann never disappoints.

I've never seen the TV show version but saw this film in theater back in the summer of 2006 and loved it. I'm not a fan of the early digital cinematography, I thought the movie looked like it's shot on consumer camcorders. I agree that the soundtrack's awesome, I think it's the last CD that I bought. I feel so old. Lol!

I found it boring in some parts but I was young then and had a different perspective. I might have to watch this one again. One thing that stuck with me though, even when it was still in posters, is the casting. However, I do find Barry Henley as Castillo drastically different from Edgar James Olmos (who is just tremendous in the show).

You're so right, everyone thinks of the bright colours and 80's cheese when they think of Miami Vice, but the subject matter was much darker and serious. Same can be said about Starsky & Hutch in the 70's. The episodes themes had a much more serious and grounded subject matter.

Not sure what everyone was expecting, but it did feel like an updated take on Miami Vice for the big screen. There were a few slow spots that could be edited or left out, but most of the movie was enjoyable.

Well I love this movie, watched it on the big screen and on DVD later. I know it´s a flawed movie, but it´s Michael Mann, the guy likes to take a lot of chances. The digital look was a shock back then, but it helped with the realism of the story. It´s not Mann´s best film ("Heat" is a masterpiece) but it´s really cool.

So many people I've talked to about this movie, said they expected the movie to be something else. They thought it was going to be 'Miami Vice' but then it turned out to be something else. There was no moral victory for the good guy and the bad guy wasn't punished at the end. (other than Yero, but he wasn't the real villain. Arcángel de Jesús Montoya was) It wasn't a clean movie for people who wanted a clean ending to tie off the story. This movie was ambiguous and vague, wasn't interested in "Justice Served" which was usually what people looked for in Cop-centric drama. The ending scene explained it the best. It was Sonny, headed into the hospital where Trudy was just waking up, with couple of nurses having smokes. It was about as non-event ending as you can ask for, and people were kind of shocked by that, with many people even reportedly having said 'that's it?' when the credit started rolling.

For all the ground covered in this video, I can't believe he didn't give more props to John Ortiz as Yero. A fantastic villain. And if you follow the plot and dialogue carefully, Yero gets off a truly chilling line at the end, but it's easy to overlook: "Jesus gave her to me to ask questions, and find out interesting things."

I absolutely enjoyed this movie when it was released... Micheal Mann's gritty style was perfect in this... Collateral is probably one of my all-time favorite movies and for him to adopt a similar style as that really made me really like MV... Not to mention Public Enemies which released like 4 years after this. My only real complaint about MV is that it's a bit too long but as I've gotten older I've learned to appreciate him not cutting it down so much (like most of his movies) ..

Word has it that both Foxx and Farrell loved making this movie and were keen to make a sequel but for box office receipts this has never really happened.
Farrell has since calmed down a lot and has been receiving bigger move roles as a result.
He always knew he had an issue with the drink but it seems that being a father has really made him sit up and start taking life much more seriously.
One of the things I did really like about the 2006 film is the soundtrack and the cast.

Miami Vice is one of the few movies I'm genuinely bothered didn't get the admiration it deserves. I saw it in the theater and it's one of my favorites. It's on the short list of movies I'll still watch every year or two, just because it still holds up no matter how much time has past, and every now and then I'll get in that mood where I just need to watch a solid, genuinely good, one-off movie. The kind that didn't get a sequel and shouldn't, because it's too good to be cheapened by a franchise.
