- Midwives are healthcare professionals who provide primary medical care and support to pregnant women and their newborn babies. Doulas, on the other hand, are also an incredible asset to your birth team, however they do not have any medical professional role in your birth.

I'm a doula-in-training, but I want to also be a lactation consultant, a birth educator and midwife's assistant.
Curious what kind of training you need to be a midwifes assistant? I just finished doula training with When Push Comes to Shove and would love to work as a midwives assistant. Considering school for a birth Attendant as well.
I just started school to become a birth doula! My heart has been set on that career ever since I had my homebirth 2 years ago!
Been doula-ing for 3 years now and I ALWAYS have to explain this to people 🤣😂 I don’t mind doing it, and my explanation has evolved over time … but now I’m just going to send them this video!! To the point and easy to understand!
Thanks!!
I just met my midwife today. I love her!!
That’s awesome!! What state do you live in?
@@CajunStork California
How do you hire one(CNM)? I’m in Canada ..
Thank you! Please keep your channel going!
So happy I found your channel! Ty
Are OBGYN’s necessary? I’m interested in a midwife and doula only for a possible home birth.
You don’t need both. Midwives become your primary care provider during pregnancy. OB would be necessary if you became high risk
Brilliant! Thank you !
Awesome advice
Can you do a video on belly wrapping after pregnancy and how it can help postpartum. I'm currently 38 weeks .
Oh good idea!!! Sadly, I won’t be able to get to it before you deliver though but I’ll add it to my list!!
@@CajunStork ty i also want to be a midwife
Hey, so after having two kids which are nw 1 & 3, Im pretty sure that I know I want to become a midwife now. However as my children are still young and I do intend on trying for at least 2 more children it is not the right time for me to become one as it is a medical field and will take some time to actually become one however as a Doula is along the lines of what I am looking to become I thought for now this could be a great option and wanted to know your thoughts? I am 34 atm so very aware of my age and body clock in regards to hvn children. I feel stuck cz I need to find a balance ya know.
As a doula in training myself, I say go for it! Doula training can help you decide if you want to move on to midwifery or not. Personally I don't think I'll be moving on to midwifery, but most of the girls in my class are and we had 2 midwives speak at our class. You have plenty of options.
Maybe you're like me amd just want to do birth and post partum doula in combination with lactation consultant and midwife's assistant (that's where your client is the midwife, not the mother). I also think doing birth educator is interesting, too.
Also, there are plenty of doulas who work during their own pregnancy and have discounted birthing prices for other doulas. You get into the birthing community and it also gives you an insiders look for support for your own births.
Imagine having your instructor, or one of your classmates or colleagues offering support for your next pregnancy. It's a great community of women supporting each other.
Where do midwives help deliver?
What if you can’t afford to hire both? Do you recommend to base your decision o on whether you want to give birth at a hospital or home
Believe it or not, there are doulas looking to do volunteer births to meet birthing hour requirements. Focus on getting a midwife if you can only afford one because a midwife is trained medically. As for the doula, ask your midwife if they know of any doulas looking to volunteer or who have an affordable rate. Ask around at your local birth center, too.
Love this explanation! ❤️
You should do podcasts.
BIIIIG difference! For our next birth, we’re using BOTH
Do it!! Midwives and doulas make a great team!!!
Can you be both? I would love to be there for the emotional support and everything but also help deliver the baby.
How would I become a CPM rather than a CNM? Ive done so much research yet i cannot find anything on how to become a CPM and can only find CNM. Do i have to become a nurse to become a midwife?
Shooting a video on this really soon! In the mean time check out NARM.org
Well midwives ARE nurses they're just highly trained nurses that can do a lot more than a typical nurse. So you kind of do need to become a nurse to be a midwife, just like if you wanted to be a surgeon then you would have to become a doctor first.
CPMs & LMs are actually not required to be nurses first. Similar to how a dr doesn’t become a nurse before they deliver babies. We are trained in very specific ways though and do not have prescription privileges (although we can provide medications for hemorrhage, GBS prophylaxis, IV fluids therapy, etc...). The requirements largely depend on the state. CNMs here very rarely practice out of the hospital. I believe only 2-3 in the state
Can you hire both? Also does both help first time moms and throughout the pregnancy?
Yes! You may hire both. Most doulas start care appointment around 34-36 weeks to start birth planning. Midwives you will see through your whole pregnancy.
😂! I was thinking that too
@@CajunStork I've been a doula for 20 years and typically begin working with my clients in the 2nd trimester, sometimes earlier.
Heidi Duncan so would a week before delivery probably be too late to hire a doula?
@@expectingnewlife do u like it?
I am finally able to do my first home birth and have found an amazing midwife, this is my 3rd pregnancy. I really want to hire a doula but don't know what to fully look for in a doula to make sure i make the right choice. Any advice?
Interview them for a personality click. You’ll know you have the right one almost right away. See if your area hosts a meet the doula night or something similar?
I'll have to see if they offer something like that where I'm at. Thank you so much! Your videos have really helped me and have been preparing me!!!
My daughter's friend just died 3 days ago after a home birth with a doula went wrong
4 children left now with no mother
As an aspiring midwife, do you feel it’s important and essential to become a doula first?
I definitely think it’s helpful before you spend money, time and energy pursuing midwifery to realize you can’t handle the on-call life. It’s a great way to test the waters
So we have to find a doula n midwife 😩 .. I feel stressed already😭🤣 I’m just learning about how to find a midwife now I have to search doulas 🤦🏽♀️
Your midwife can probably recommend a doula for you. They often work together and run in the same circles.
@@ElanaVital83 ok thank you 😊
If there’s a doula is oblongata lol I’m thinking about becoming a midwife
LOL
can you be both
No offense but this left me with more questions then answers
Lay them on me! What kinds of questions do you have?
"Birth person" is kind of and objectifying term. It's sounds offensive. Just say mother
Stop walking closer to the camera. It scares me
CPM midwife = lay midwife. They have a high perinatal mortality rate. Instead, get a nurse-midwife if you want good care; they have a master's degree and lots of experience and training.
Where are you getting this info?
She pulled it out of her butt. Competition too for the CNMs cause they have a ton of student loan debt to pay off. Hospitals/Big Pharma don't want their customers seeking other alternatives.
Cite your sources please.
Correct
I completely disagree with this statement and like others have asked, please cite your sources.
You should consider gender-neutral language. I was thrown off within the first minute when you kept referring to the non-birthing parent as the "husband". Not everyone is married, not all non-birthing partners are men, and not all couples are straight. This video also contained some misinformation as well.
With respect, I do realize that not all couples are married and not all couples are straight. However, my clientele is largely a christian-based, married (not all) and straight (not all) practice as I live in South Louisiana. In my culture, it’s actually offensive to call the husband “partner” (similarly, my married lesbian couples want their spouse called their wife, not their “partner”) and many long term committed couples in this area will refer to their partners as “husband” even though they aren’t married. I also have served singled moms where there is no partner or husband involved at all and we can adjust for that too, but I know they still get useful information from my videos despite the husband references. I know I’m going off on a tangent here but I’m not a CZcams star, I’m a real life practicing midwife working with my own cultural norms and just trying to share information that helps people. As a midwife, I connect with my clients on an individual bases basis and adjust my language for their personal situation, but on a public stage I desire to maintain my cultural norms and refer to their partners as spouses.
@@CajunStork everyone’s so triggered these days it’s impossible to not offend someone.
Lmao even in a birthing video this. Like it’s not insane to say pregnant person or chest feeding there’s also this 😅 exhausting
Uh-oh, someone wants to show off how progressive they are 🙄 Quit speech-policing. This woman knows more about how her clients wish to be addressed than you would. Stop looking for controversy for attention.
@@CajunStork Thank you for standing up for what you believe in!! You've earned the respect of many!
All of this midwife and doula stuff just sounds like a hoax so they can get my money... as if my life isn’t already on the line and my condition and potential child won’t consume most of my money as well my time.
Quit opposite actually. One of the biggest advantages of have a doula as stated in the video is the reduce unnecessary procedures for clients.
