    I believe the larger issue is the franchises that won't quote over the phone, offer to show up for free, and make fortunes over-quoting people who are too shy to say: "No thanks I'll get some more bids first.". Applies to large scope renovations, and to in-and-out service work.

    You're absolutely on the right side bro. This happens all the time with certain people that only see it as a favour. But if the table was turned they would not appreciate it..

    You are being perfectly reasonable. Welcome to service plumbing. I've been threatened to be sued by a customer/lawyer because I installed a backwater valve for them in Toronto and he freaked out when he had poop all over his basement a year or so later. 1) backwater valves stop most sewage from the street coming up into your home but it doesn't stop you from flooding your own basement. 2) if the valve doesn't close 100% because a piece of solid waste holds the flap opens, sewage can still back into the building drain 3) backwater valves should be inspected/cleaned every year to make sure it has a decent chance of working when it needs to. (Yes, it's a Single family dwelling). As far as cost, it never ceases to amaze me how a wealthy customer has no problem dropping a few thousand Cdn$ to fly two ways to a vacation destination but freak out when you quote them $2,500 To break concrete in a basement, rough in the ABS for drains and PEX water pipe, mix and reinstall fresh concrete after back filling, and install the fixtures that they want when the bathroom is ready for finishing. This was another potential customer. I wasn't afraid to turn down cheapskates if they didn't like my quotes.

    Hey thanks for the video and putting this out there. I think you were right in what you did. The thing is with sales, you put out your clear intention out there to see how the customer reacts. It's impossible for us to guess what the other person is thinking but we can only reasonably make decisions based on what the other person does. You should not feel responsible for what another person feels, we can't cater to everyone because everyone does different things in the same situation. You can only focus on what you want the other person to feel. In this case you did your best to show you're a plumber who sets your standards on your pricing and assure the customer doesn't feel the surprised when you get there. Don't worry about a rant, every sane person needs to rant.

    Wow this is the reason I stay working new construction so I don't have to deal with people like that.. Mad respect to you for having to put up with that.

      Same story with me. But even housing construction up here in Ontario is dead/dying now. We hit the housing real estate price ceiling and only condos in Toronto are still in demand. Housing construction is going on with rich builders for customers who bought them two years ago but nobody is walking into sales office for new houses that aren't built yet now. In fact, customers are backing out of their contracts for completed houses because the prices were $70,000 higher two years ago than the same house would be sold for today. Looks like I'm going to have to go back to service work if I don't find commercial/industrial plumbing new construction work.

    I find the cheapest people are the richest people. They’re tight man! They play the sympathy card all the time.
    It’s your bread and butter my friend, charge them 100% . You did nothing wrong, it’s good to hear reactions like that over the phone because people like that I stay away from

    • @Kennymolotov
      @Kennymolotov  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yeah we have to filter through potential customers like this on the phone. It would have been a waste of time and an uncomfortable situation.

    • @emerald_pollex01
      @emerald_pollex01 Před 3 měsíci

      Better to dodge a bullet over the phone then to waste time with people like that. As a rule, I don't like judging people based on their financial status but some people out there who are VERY well off tend to have some hair trigger reflex where the unspoken thought in their mind is "don't think that just because I'm rich that I'm just going to quickly spend it on you like its no big deal to me! I'm still pretending to be poor so that I don't "waste" money."

    The customers are out of line and like you said they’ve likely never dealt with a service tradesperson before. They probably imagine plumbers are like some of those driveway pavers who go door-to-door offering free quotes

    • @Kennymolotov

    • @emerald_pollex01

      Even after politely and reassuringly telling a customer that I wasn't going to charge for driving to the supplier to get special parts (not just standard plumbing materials) so that I could fix his complex plumbing issue, he arrogantly exclaimed "Good! Because I wouldn't have paid you for it!" As a rule, we usually did charge for travel time and time at the supplier for special items but my boss wanted me to be nice to him because he gave us lots of business before. It just bothers me when customers act entitled and make passive-aggressive remarks like that to my face when we weren't even obligated to respond to his service call in the first place. Last time I checked, being a plumber didnt make someone obligated to show up and help anyone with a problem.

  • @ifixditpd6391
    @ifixditpd6391 Před 3 měsíci +1

    I let all potential customers know, I charge a $90 destination/diagnostic fee, which is waived with service authorization...with all fees starting at $300. Don't call me to come turn off a faucet or jiggle a toilet handle. If they are in agreement with my initial correspondence, then I'll schedule a visit.

    • @Kennymolotov
      @Kennymolotov  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Wow, do you every worry customers will get scared away at your prices?

    • @ifixditpd6391
      @ifixditpd6391 Před 3 měsíci +1

      No, it separates the buyers from the window shoppers...I'm not a handyman and most handymen(unlicensed) charge upwards of what a licensed plumber may charge. If it's a true plumbing problem and they need/want a licensed professional, they'll have no problem with the fee(s).

      @ifixditpd6391 if they do call you in, and it turns out to be just opening a shutoff valve that got closed by accident, do you just charge them the $90 trip charge, or you still charge them $300?

    • @ifixditpd6391
      @ifixditpd6391 Před 3 měsíci

      @@realSamAndrew I'd likely decline the job and tell them to hire a handyman...or do it themselves.

      You know how acquaintances who are lawyers always act weird when you ask them legal questions at get-togethers or parties because they give legal advice and charge for it for a living when they are at the office? It should be that way for us plumbers. You want me to look at your plumbing and give you advice? You pay for it.
